Those coffee filters are cheaper for 100 or 200, than the cupcake papers.. Since I'm fairly new at all this, I'm trying to learn all I can about canning and sealing.. I also have seen people in videos put their dry goods in paper lunch bags, then put it in the sealer bag. It works great! You can get 100 or 200 lunch bags at Costco and Smart & Final for a really good price.. They have brown or white.
I bought some flat coffee filter discs because they are round like the jar, BUT as I was putting the paper discs in the jars, I noticed that there's a hole in then, right in the middle! Totally defeats the purpose!
I ended up putting a rounded square of paper towel over it. 😊

@@cookiemama4 I don't waste anything. The stained cotton would be shredded & hung on branches for bird nests or composted. This is what I have on hand. And anywhere it's stained will show if any of the powdered foods have gotten on top before it gets in the vacuum sealer.

I use plain white cupcake liners when vac sealing jars. For flour and such, I use white paper lunch bags. Fill bag about 3/4 full and fold over the top. Insert into a FoodSaver bag, upside down. Folded edge lets air escape from the bag while holding back the powder. The flour "bricks" are then stored in buckets or totes. Recently bought the brake bleeder kit and am looking forward to using that, if/when the grid is down.
Hope this is helpful for someone.

What I do is, when filling up the jar with dry powder goods I fill the jar in steps, I use a wooden mallet to tamper down pack down then fill again tamper down, until below the inch headspace then I put a clean dry coffee filter put the lid and jar sealer adapter and vacuum seal with the Foodsaver and it will not suck in the powder- flour, sugar, etc. Into the hose. It works for me all the time.

I’ve ordered three of the dairy powders you recommended (through your link) and i’m getting a little antsy to get on with sealing things! It’s still impossible to find a regular mouth jar sealer unless you want to spend an exorbitant amount for it. Which i don’t but i did get a large mouth jar sealer so i’ll start with that! I had to chuckle when you talked about sealing the chocolate chips. At our house, my husband eats chocolate every.single.day. I buy so much chocolate that it needs it’s own budget line! Thanks for taking the time to teach us all another new trick! Much appreciated!

Much of the things I want some information on the jar. Sometimes I will use my phone to take a photo of part of the label, put that in my computer and print a label to put on the jar with some packing tape. I don't always remember what the liberals say about mixing it or using it. This gives me the information on the jar I seal.

I am going to try this as it sounds like a good dual purpose idea in that it will absorb any moisture and also stop the powder getting on the rim. I haven't had much problem with powder but am wondering about pumping the brake bleeder slower, if that would help stop powder from being pulled up and getting under the canning lid? Just a thought, thanks Heidi!

Slower may help but hard to say, you are still going to get a vacuum and powders are so light. Even so, knowing me and how I do everything con brio, I probably would never remember to stop and take the time to go slower! haha

I find the reusable lids like Tattler and Harvest Guard work best for pressure canning, and single-use metal lida work best for water bath canning or dry goods vac pac storage. I feel like the reusable gaskets actually need the higher heat and pressure of the pressure canner to set a solid seal.

It take me years to use it up anyway. Organic cane sugar was still the old price. I hope the big bag of baking soda isn't hard as a rock. I can't believe we are preparing for food shortages again. I simply put in a sink of hot soapy water and swished back and forth numerous times to get the water to flow through it back and forth then rinsed well with hot water. Other than that, I have not needed to clean it as the hose only pulls out air, not fluids or powders (if you make sure to put some kind of cover or barrier over the top of the powders before putting on the lid. Plus, nothing in the hose ever touches the food or can contaminate it since the air is coming out of the jar and through the hose, not the other way around

@Spring Barn ... possibly it will work with the attachments...you'll have to try & see. But if you're using the one that goes over the circle on the plastic bag, no I'm sorry but that one won't work because of how it's designed.
As for lids... If you know anyone who cans you want their used lids they throw away. After washing well : hold lid so you can see the edge and look closely. Anywhere there's a bend in it you want to roll that part on a solid metal surface until it evens out & curls back in place. That being said there are 2 lid problems that make them useless: 1. Any punctures in lid will prevent the vacuum from forming. 2. Any part of the rubber gasket inside the lid that's broken all the way across the side to side like if that circle were a ring and someone put a hairline erasure in it. That will also prevent the seal. ( There is 1 way to fix this: if you have any rubber gaskets like is used in bale canning jars or even with tattler lids...1 can be placed on the jar rim before adding the lid. Then it should seal fine. Mine did. Was a bit tricky but with new lids hard to find?)
For new lids check Lehman's catalog, Amish or Mennonite stores, Tractor supply stores or hardware stores. In some cases you may be able to PRE- buy & not be charged until they come in.
