    I believe the cruise ship was called the St. Louis. Hitler filled it with Jews and it sailed to Canada, was refused. It went to the US and was also turned away. Those people were forced - by FDR - to return to Germany.

    My grandmother was a Jew in the US during the time of the Second World War and she said there was major antisemitism in the US during that time. The average American did not want more “foreigners” coming into the country, even back then. Humans are tribal and we automatically distrust anyone who is different.
    However, I don’t think anyone could imagine how horrorful the Nazi concentration camps really were - at that time we had never seen mechanized genocide on that scale before. The German people themselves mostly did not realize how evil their government had become re. the camps. Denial is a powerful self preservation mechanism we all are vulnerable to.

    • @WampusWrangler
      @WampusWrangler 9 місяців тому +1

      To the second part of your comment, you should watch the documentary he is talking about in this video. We did know what was happening in the camps well before we found them. The whole world knew as early as 1941 when the death camps first opened that the nazis were doing mass executions on an unfathomable scale. We knew in 1942 that there were gas chambers involved. The state department initially refused to let the press print the details, but by 42 accounts of the camps from escaped prisoners were being printed in US newspapers.
      If you read first hand accounts of American soldiers and generals though, they all do express their shock. But they were well aware of what was happening before they liberated the first camp. I think the difference is knowing something in theory vs actually seeing and being physically present for the horrors right in your face.
      But the notion that no one knew what was happening until the military was there is simply a myth.

      Indeed, knowing and understanding are different things. Just because one knows how to sound out and say a word doesn't make those words have meaning. Even if one acquires figurative meaning based on context clues, there is limit to understanding without literal and comparable experience.

    To a 1933 Depression Era American who probably knew Germany was recently going through massive political unrest involving Communists vs. Fascists vs. the existing democratic government.
    It's hard to imagine it but Americans saw German Jews as Germans like part of the German speaking diaspora in the U.S. of which German jews were a part.
    1933 was the absolute most closed door time to come here asking for political asylum.

    I don’t disagree with the facts of the message, but is being described with a little bit of a self-righteous tone. To know the Nazis were doing horrible things is one thing, but the commitment and reality of putting a stop to it is another. In hindsight it’s very easy to say it took us too long to react.

    • @TheBatugan77

      Why was it up to us to react? The genocide was horrible and unthinkable. But numerous countries far closer to the events did nothing. German citizens did nothing apparently. If the US 'meddles', we're imperialist. If not, we're responsible?

  • @NGAOPC
    @NGAOPC 17 днів тому

    It wasn’t “The Holocaust” in 1933, with plans and mission statement laid out in detail in every headline news piece from Europe. there was no inevitability to derive from what could be read then, as a widely known “Holocaust” was not embedded in the U.S. consciousness (had genocides happened sure, but not become a global touch point); need it be said we didn’t have the internet. We knew in college in the 90s the government “knew”, and we read popular and academic works on what could/couldnt have be done after 1941 to stop the Holocaust; which is to say this part is 30 yr old news, whatever failings may come from current education from popular films (and documentaries like Burns’). It is a myth there is a singular American myth of a singular form shaped by “parts” like this. To indict “The American People” is to also indict *members of groups and communities all persecuted in The Holocaust*, even those who did know - and as this sliced sampling suggests - because they were “Americans” - were duped by a preference for authoritarianism and tyrants. Conveniently most of the generation who lived then are dead and can’t come to their own defense (would Burns consider Roosevelts progressive Democratic administrations State of Emergency and New Deal government, declared weeks before Hitler’s - tyrannical? His acceptance of eugenics? Continuing federally backed forced sterilization of the mentally ill and “degenerate”, forced repatriation of Mexicans and deportation of Mexican American US citizens by cattle car to Mexico? - all of course examples held up as defining for the regime that began a few weeks later in Europe). Weigh how we are to take the claim that as Americans “WE are sort of wired to accept tyranny and authoritarianism”, a “lesson” to be learned from a Holocaust documentary - coming from a UA-cam channel repping the UN.

    • @NGAOPC
      @NGAOPC 17 днів тому
