After a rough, tiring day at work, I was in the mood for some light, mindless entertainment. Instead, I accidentally clicked on this video, got drawn into it, and found myself saying, "Man, this is really interesting!" several times. Now I feel enriched instead of mindlessly entertained. I knew that Conan had gone to either Harvard or Yale (forgot which)--and here it really shows. And speaking of poetic speech writers and orators, Ken Burns has a natural poetic way of speaking that makes me want to lean in and listen, to digest and understand every word. And now that I've been enlightened, I'm gonna go and watch some Russian dash-cam car crash videos....

I never was a fan of Conan as a comedian, but I have become a real fan of his doing interviews like this one. The reason is that, as an interviewer, he isn't intent on touting himself but rather asks intelligent questions that allows the interviewee to tell their story in their own way. This is a technique that is sadly lacking in today's media, not everyone can do this, and I really appreciate Conan doing it. Looking forward to more interviews! Also, Ken Burns is the best documentarian and speaks to two audiences in his stories. The first is today's audience so we can be entertained but also educated so that history is not forgotten. The second is the audience 50 or 100 years from now who can learn from and build on mistakes and wisdom from the past. I have learned the passion of this from Ken Burns.

A lot of Conan's comedy is misleadingly self-important. He's essentially parodying TV personalities that are full of themselves, not unlike Stephen Colbert on the Colbert Report (though not Colbert's more recent talk show personality.)

We do have people in this country with enormous intellect, courage and integrity who could potentially rise to the level of a Lincoln or a Kennedy. Unfortunately, the political and media landscape of today would likely stop at nothing to reveal and capitalize on such a person's shortcomings. Both Lincoln and Kennedy, however great, were also flawed men. Many of their faults were simply not publicized or used against them at the time, allowing them the space to maneuver more effectively as president. Sadly, the level of scrutiny and zeal for transparency in today's fast-paced media world -- not to mention, the insufferable partisanship -- has made politicians overly-cautious, robotic, scripted, disingenuous and unable to govern effectively when so many in the public are saturated with misinformation.
