World Humanitarian Day: Nadia Younes 1946–2003
On 19 August 2003, a bomb attack on the Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 humanitarian aid workers, including Nadia Younes, the Chief of Staff for Iraq.
Five years later, in 2008, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August as World Humanitarian Day (WHD).
In her 33-year career with the United Nations, Nadia worked in New York, in Rome, Kosovo, Geneva, and lastly, in Iraq. She contributed to many of the UN’s successes, including the Beijing Women’s Conference in 1995, the Millennium Summit in 2000 and the World Summit for Sustainable Development in 2002.
Nadia Younes moved from work in public information, where she served as Spokeswoman for two former UN Secretaries-General to Chief of Protocol, and then to the World Health Organization, before being assigned to Baghdad as Chief of Staff.
She was about to return to New York, when her life was cruelly cut short in the Canal Hotel bombing.

    So ultimately the western people sold us the brick, steel and cement houses in the name of modernity and now when the people in rural areas destroyed their Kaccha(mud) houses and built a Pucca(cement, steel) house the enlightened environmentalist have woken up that No No the mud house was only best and sustainable. All this because of colonial hangover. People need to decolonialise their mind and see everything with rational thought, everything in west is not good. What may suit for their environment from food to clothing to architecture may not suit for us. India should modernise according to our own Ontology Epistemology and Theology (OET).

    This looks very scripted, full of platitudes. How do u make these out of mud: sump, lintel, staircase, floors? How do u deal with rodents with a ground floor made of mud? First and second and third floors - made of mud? She needs to ask herself, "In the end, what impact did I hav on the environment?" Zero.

    This is fascinating. The amazing and impressive structures in Timbaktu come to my mind with palaces and mosques built with mud and are still there after few centuries. "The buildings in Timbuktu are known for their mud architecture, which uses a combination of hand-pulled soil, cow dung, kaolin, wheat porridge, ash, and sticky leaf juice. The walls are often decorated with geometric patterns and friezes. " Perhaps the world needs more of these and not naked skyscrapers consuming huge amount of energy while destroying the quality of life.

    We loved the video and we think you are doing a great job. We are a Climate Tech startup company based out of Bengaluru. We are developing contingency systems, space, marine and energy systems to combat climate change. As architects you are using environment friendly materials to build homes and that is a step in the right direction. You are doing a fabulous job. Just want to add that, the root cause of climate change is population explosion and over consumption and we are not doing anything about it. We have surpassed China as one of the most populated countries in the world and our numbers are growing by the millions each year. Another cause or rather trend that we have observed is that people are on a property buying spree. The more the merrier. A home for the city, a home to party, a weekend home and so on and so forth. How many homes does a person need to live a peaceful life? If we control these two things, then we have won the war against climate change. Controlling population, means less deforestation, less space required to live and work, more forests and controlled use of agricultural land. Land and natural resources are not commodities period! Land and natural resources are not investments. They are a previlege given to us by our planet and we should start respecting them like so. Regulating property sale and ensuring people dont just go on a buying spree is another positive step we can take towards reducing deforestation and climate change.

    You called us right-wing Cuban simply because we speak the truth. Look at Cuba now-look at the state of its economy. How many Cubans risk their lives to reach a free country? Fidel Castro’s regime devastated Cuba, its people, and its economy. Let me ask you: do you live in Cuba? Where do you live now? If you truly admire Fidel and his system, why not move to Cuba and experience it for yourself? Then you can tell us how you like it. Please, do the world a favor and stop spreading propaganda. I rely on facts, not fantasies.

  • @Mar1ra822
    @Mar1ra822 17 днів тому

    You sound just like a typical apologist for the Cuban regime, twisting facts, deflecting blame, and avoiding the real issues. Don't insult my intelligence by trying to manipulate the situation in Cuba and pin everything on the so-called U.S. "embargo." Cuba has the freedom to trade with many countries that don’t have an embargo with them. There are plenty of nations willing to do business with Cuba. So stop using the embargo as a lame excuse for the country's dire situation. The problem is not the embargo-it’s the regime. The Cuban dictatorship doesn’t allow its own people to work their land. Cuba was once a global leader in producing sugar, tobacco, and coffee, but now the regime prevents the Cuban people from working their fields, leaving them unable to harvest the resources that could support their economy. You can't tell me about Cuba because I lived there. I am Cuban, and I still have family on the island. I’ve seen firsthand what the regime does to its people. They cut off electricity every day. That’s not the embargo-it’s a government that is heartless and indifferent to its citizens’ suffering. It’s easier for communists to blame external factors than to take responsibility for their own failures. That’s a hallmark of totalitarian regimes-they never hold themselves accountable. I’ll be honest-I wish Fidel Castro, and all those who have upheld this Marxist-Leninist nightmare, would rot in hell for destroying so many lives. As for your comment about corporations, let me set the record straight. I work for a corporation where the CEO is a billionaire. Do I resent him for that? No. I don’t care how wealthy he is. What matters is that I have a job, I can provide for my family, and I live comfortably. But my family in Cuba doesn’t have that luxury. They can’t even get access to basic necessities, all because of a regime that prioritizes its own survival over the well-being of its people. You wrote, “Who cares that when Batista was in power the Cuban economy was booming?” Well, the Cuban people cared. Under Batista, Cuba had a functioning economy, access to electricity, food, medicine, and healthcare. People were able to work in agriculture, with the big corporations, and actually have a chance to prosper. Today, the people of Cuba are being starved, oppressed, and denied even the most basic freedoms. You’re quoting what you’ve read about Cuba, but I’ve lived it. I know what the reality is, and it’s far from what you think. And don’t even try to compare Cuba to Northern Ireland. In Northern Ireland, there’s freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and democracy. In Cuba, there is no freedom-no speech, no democracy, no elections. The dictator is not elected by the people-he is imposed. These are facts. So, before you try to lecture me about Cuba, maybe you should take a step back and consider who is really to blame for the suffering of its people.
