    Good video!
Couple things just to clarify for audience:
Bumper structure is beyond aircraft grade strength aluminum, not steel. I am heavily involved in the production of that unit and it’s assembly. It’s tough!
Got your terminology backwards on the filter. It’s a canister not a cartridge. Last tundra used a cartridge. This is a simple spin on canister thankfully.
Exhaust on Toyotas are stainless steel including the hangers.
The previous generation Tundra also had 4 cats.
Skid plates are high impact polyethylene which won’t dent or rust like steel. The Pro would have a heavy aluminum front skid and additional steel skids.

Hi Tim, Thanks a lot for all your videos on your new tundra. I have a 2015 tundra limited and live in central Yukon, Canada. I' ve pushed my truck beyond it's "described" limits on every aspect (working in firewood business, up to 15000lbs loads...-50c temperatures....-30's cold start, every time, all this truck as to say is "that's all you got?") and I have been amazed with it. I am following of course carefully what the 2.0 version of my beloved truck could be. Thanks a lot! You are followed all the way up North....way north. Your insight won't go unnoticed. I might wait a year or so to get all the computer bugs aspects all figured out... but if we ever have a platinum, 6.5ft bed, with trd off road, in hybrid in Canada....yop...i might be in for that! again, tks a lot!

That front bumper looks like structural aluminum and not steel. That's good and bad. The good is that it's as strong as steel on initial impact while being better at dissipating energy in a severe collision. The bad is, those bolts that mount it to the frame appear to be steel... and if salt/brine makes it's way up in there, you'll get some pretty serious galvanic action... i.e. corrosion. Something to keep and eye on.

    • @rebelcitysports1outlook747

Good job on the undercarriage review. Everything looks solid except the plastic protective fuel tank plate and rear bumper. If you do get front end damage it looks like you’ll get major damage to the air dam and it’s motor assembly, oil cooler and other structures before the “massive piece of steel” piece starts to protect what’s behind it. Nitpicking brings me to the single exhaust outlet. Excellent review as always.

    • @lc7192
      @lc7192 2 роки тому +1

I’ve just came to a couple of conclusions about my prior statement. Maybe the hard plastic shield under the fuel tank is designed to take an impact without causing a spark in case there is a leak or seep in the fuel system. The plastic pieces on the sides of the bumper allow the rear backing safety sense to operate properly. The single side exhaust is also a safety feature. It is on the opposite side of the fuel tank. Also where would another exhaust pipe be routed? I would rather have the full sized spare tire so it makes sense what Toyota did in that regard as well. I really can’t find anything that I would do differently than what Toyota did, except keep the reliable V8.

I don't ever hope to use tow hooks for recovery as I don't off road and hopefully stay on the road otherwise, however I do carry canoe's from time to time and being able to tie the front down (and back) is critical especially in windy conditions. A simple pop out piece on either side of the bumper with a recovery screw in hook (like some of the German brands) would even suffice. Attaching a strap down and around that air dam is likely going to be problematic. Keep up the great work.

Tim, your videos are awesome! I think you just talked me "out" of a new Tundra. My 2019 TRD PRO is amazing. I don't think I could deal with that oil filter. I perform my own oil changes, and minor maintenance. My TRD PRO has the access door. A previous Tundra which I owned had the pesky skid plate removal for all oil changes. I ended up cutting a hole in the skid plate for access. I am happy to see that Toyota finally went back to the traditional oil filter, but am highly disappointed in its placement. That bumper issue is horrendous. Also, tow hooks are a must! Keep. em coming, bud. Do we know if the 2022 TRD PRO will have an access panel for the oil filter, as in previous years?

I would look into relocating that oil filter. Put it on the top of the engine, and a spin on conventional filter. Those plastic filter housings can crack when they get over torqued by oil change places or dealerships.

    • @rayrussell6258

It's a metal conventional oil filter, not plastic.
But no to it being relocated on top of engine, where you will get oil dumped on things every oil change. It's ok where it is here, but Toyota should lose the "beauty shield" that so many manufacturers have been adding to engine and underbody areas. They always add inconvenience, but little value.

@@collinhopper7542 Trust me Collin, it has minuscule value as aero, it generally ADDS a bit of weight to the vehicle that partially or wholly offsets the aero. It's another case where just because we CAN do it doesn't mean we SHOULD do it. Wind tunnel aero numbers get fed into the formula used in another test facility where emissions and fuel economy are extrapolated from exhaust gas collected. Sometimes, you need to find a tweek to get 0.1 mpg more out of the formula so the CAFE label goes up a whole mpg in rounding. The car being certified isn't moving, so an aero value is plugged into the formula to simulate movement.
Occasionally something like that shield can deflect heat from catalysts or exhaust pipes from heating up the passenger compartment floor, but that's a rare thing better accomplished other ways that cost less in material expense and assembly labor. IDK why Toyota has that one there, but it's in the way of servicing the oil filter. I say get rid of it.
I spent my career in automotive engineering. We did a lot of things because of how it impacts the government's formulas for measurement of emissions and fuel economy on the dynamometers, where vehicles get certified to meet regulations.
Once, we added an otherwise unnecessary bar of steel next to the transmission, called it a harmonic noise canceler. It did that, but the real reason was so we could group 2 car lines into the same emissions weight class, the bar added enough weight to the lighter car so they could be grouped together, and cut certification cost in half. It was legal, but to customers it made little difference to real-world fuel economy or noise.

Real trucks use metal skid plates though.
Toyota always cuts corners if they can get away with it. Their pickup truck two generations ago had outer sheet metal so thin, it was extremely easy to dent it with just thumb pressure. I saw a display vehicle of theirs at an Auto Show one year that had to be removed and replaced, because it looked like a hail storm had hit it, there were so many dents made by spectators walking past the truck. Word spread like wildfire how cheap the fenders were, so everyone was doing the thumb test all day long that day. But like everything else, Toyota owners ignored that obvious bad quality and continued to rate their vehicle high in quality anyway.

any ways I was going to state Two things every new car owner should do right off the dealer lot.
1.) A 2-8 year ceramic coating for the paint
    2.) fluid film the underside
those two things will save both the paint and the underside from damage and rust for years to come keeping every thing looking new. not only is it not to expensive to have done but you just invested 40k-80k on a vehicle this will protect your investment on resale or for services. nothing like paying a hour of labor for service tech to hate you struggling to get a rusty bolt out or having to buy all new hardware every time you get a aliment since the bolts don't work properly any more.

It's nice to see the underbody on trucks. I don't mind rust on the thick metal of the axles, but you definitely shouldn't see rust on the frame early on. I would be curious to compare some that are a few years old - might be an idea for some videos for you. GM is likely the worst with their waxed frames. Thanks for the video.
