Awesome vid. Question. What type of grease are you using?
Best honda outboard impeller change on UA-cam!
Superb video. All action, no talk. Thanks
Excellent! Nice clear filming with a clean view of each operation. What a boon UA-cam is for young people who want to learn how to work on motors. So much better than user manuals and figure as you go... Thanks.
I agree that this is a great video and just straight work, no chatter. Thank you!
Are you able to show us how to service, and clean the carburetor on a 10 Hp honda outboard?
Thank-you,
Tom
Could you tell me the name of the product you use in spray to clean the parts and the name of your white grease ? Thanks.
i changed to another brand, now i use Yamaha lical grease.
The other grease was Selva outboard grease, but it is not available any more.
You can also use lithium grease, and vasaline fot the impeller.
The spray can is a normal degreaser, you can also use: Loctite 7063, Loctite 7070 and also breake cleaner.
The best impeller video I've ever seen. Great job and nice attention to detail. The mech did a very thorough job. No need for talking in this video!
Thanks! I'm also dutch, me talking is not interesting.
I used this video last time I had to change my impeller and did it by myself at the beach, and I freaking nailed it because of this video. A couple years later, here I am again! I have a 25 HW motor which is done almost exactly the same.
T A great video. Now I knoe how to change my impeller. Thanks!
You are the best It clear ,it ez understanding, thank you
Thank you very much for sharing , I'm gonna changing my 15hp impeller tomorrow.
Shops charge around 100$ to do a job most of us can do with basic tools like wrenches and socket set, as you have demonstrated so well here. Thanks for sharing, now get out there and catch some fish..;-}}
No Thanks, giving information is a part of our service.
And we ask also about 100$ in our workshop to change the impeller.
But most of the time it will be changed together whit the rest in a big maintanance.
This is about 150-200$ for a small 4stroke engine. (in Holland)
And lucky for us not everyone has a basic tool kit, because we need to pay the rent also! ;-)
Good luck with fisching!
I wish you well in your business Sir; your ethics and values will go a long way in keeping your clients happy.. Cheers from Canada!!
Even if I don’t want to tackle this job myself, it is great to see what is involved and understand what the shop charge is for. Now, these honda impellers are known to stick to the housing and the break the blades as soon as the engine is run after a long storage. Any advice?
@@bendrixbailey1430 replace them regularly! Easy job, looks a bit daunting from the outset. I just mine for the first time, simple job.
Also doing it regularly is better that then having a broken fin jammed up inside the engine somewhere. Which is possibly what I have. Hopefully it just got chewed apart and spit out but you never really know. I cannot find one fin. 🙄
$100 is normal, the impeller kit (hard to tell what is broken) is around $60, impeller alone is $15. Their time also isnt free, just like a car shop.
This is a regular care item so I do agree it should be something we all need to know how to do on our own. Its also very critical to the health of the motor, also avoid running it outside of the water for no reason as it causes impeller damage.
I found from my local dealer that if the imepller plates come apart, its best to chec thermostat and lower filter screen for the rubber parts before closing it all up.
Once everything is tightened up is it common to turn a little hard by hand
Excellent video. I bought a 2008 Honda 20HP the previous owner serviced it with a new impeller /termoatst etc he also used it 3 times after service.. I took it home and put water through the Honda by muffs and the telltail had a great stream of water coming out on the top.
When i put it on after 3 days to go fishing the water was less. But i did about 60kms all up in the same day and i did not have any engine trouble . But the water flow on the tell tail still is the same when i got back home to flush. Should i worry about it or I need to check anything. Thanks
Thank you so much! Just changed mine and now she’s running perfectly!
Very instructive and great clarity on the video. I liked just watching the work being done, with good camera work. It beats wordiness!
make sure you get the outlet tube lined up correctly or no water pressure, there is a grommet on top of the rubber connector hose that must fit securely, had it happen, dont rush .
might have done the first step with the motor tilted up , good video
Is this almost the same for the older BF9.9 models, >2004? They internally look the same, only the outside is different, so the internal tail section might be slightly different also. And what kind of lubricant is used for the impeller?
Thanks in advance, Jan
looks like just dielectric grease or any sort of lubricant. Its just to smooth things over before you assemble it all. Dielectric will be safe on rubber as well.
The odd thing here is that from our North American standards, the BF8, BF9.9 and bf15 all seem to use the same lower unit and drive shaft.
Seems like his part numbers are slightly different for different shaft diameters.
Excellent! No chit-chat necessary! Thank You! 👍
Excellent video ....thanks for creating
Thank you so much ! great job!
Great DYI video for impeller change on small hp Honda's. Doing my 8 hp ASAP as no water from pee hole and little rubber pieces inside the screen.
I have the same motor and same issue. Dude I purchased it from started it dry to demonstrate and I was too ignorant to stop him. I'll look for the rubber pieces now! Thanks
@@TheBiggerDavo running a little dry wont affect it, its a common fail part that goes every 4-5 years according to honda.
Its just a pain on them finding the correct part number, the outboard serial numbers are quite useless in trying to find parts.
In the future, bring those little water years or a 5gal bucket, a lot of these outboards fit into 5gal bucket without any issues for a test start.
Make it look so easy class 👌
Great video dude I changed the oil today a little water in it same last year do you have a video on how to change the seals
Thanks mate Exellent Suberb Video !! i just change impeller on my honda bf 10
Gracias por la información. Supongo que es igual para el 8Hp 4 Stroke?
Hey, just wondering if you had to drain the oil from the lower end to remove that? I have a BACS model BF8 and I'm doing the impeller this weekend, just wondering if I need Oil. I just replaced the lower end oil recently.
Sorry for the late reply!
You don't have to drain the oil from the lower unit if you want to change the impeller.
But if you already busy with maintenance, 10 minutes of work and $10 extra.
The only way of checking for leaks is draining the oil.
And water in our lower gear case will damage all the bearings and gears.
Locomotionbre, I was taking out screws when one of them was broken. Should I buy the original one or is there a different option? What do you recommend me?
By the way, great job! Your video is so clarifying!
Anyone know which brand and model of grease this youttuber is using in the video? Thanks in advance.
Great video. I can tell you've done that job a time or two.
I think they have the same parts nubbers like a BF10
outboard is almost the same, only shaftsize BF15 is bigger size
@4:37
Look up the part nubbers :
peparts.honda.com/marine#/serial
Great video. What is the white grease you are using? I am about to replace my impeller, but have never done this before. Thank you.
Hello, I am from the U.S.A. I just bought a used 2012 20 horsepower manual tilt short shaft tiller handle Honda Outboard and the owner said it was recently serviced with a new impeller oil change and gaskets. I put it on my boat and connected earmuffs and fired her up. She starts up easily. I ran it for just a couple minutes and never saw any water coming out of the Tell Tale hole. I cleaned the hose and outlet for The Tell Tale and there was dirt in there. Still no water coming out of the pisser. What should I do now?
My first thought is that the water pipe is not properly connected in the impeller housing.
Did the previous owner use the engine a while after it is been serviced?
Or did he sell it directly after the maintenance, than is possible that he maid this mistake.
IF THE MOTOR RAN FOR JUST A MINUTE OR MORE WITHOUT WATER THE IMPELLOR IS ALSO GAME OVER!!!!
You can also try to blow CAREFULLY the hose or tell tale with a compressor wen the engine is running an connected to the water supply.
Wen you see just a few drops of water coming out of the tell tale means theres a blockage.
If not, then is the problem at the water pump or the linkage with the water pipe in the midsection.

Thanks fast end efficient work. Can I use any marine grease? Or maybe it should be a silicone grease for the impeller? Don’t greases hurt rubber items? Also any suggestions for an impeller fin that I cannot find? It’s not stuck in the downward side of the telltale. But the uptake tube that parallels the drive shaft in the housing seems hard to access. my guess is it might be there. I see a bolt way up in there holding that pipe in the place but afraid to take it apart can’t get it back together! Any suggestions? Thx. Ideally I’d like to find the fin……
Hey, just wondering if you had to drain the oil from the lower end to remove that? I have a BACS model BF8 and I'm doing the impeller this weekend, just wondering if I need Oil. I just replaced the lower end oil recently so if I don't need to replace it, then great. I ask because I notice the drain bolt for the oil is on the piece that I'd be removing, therefore I'm assuming the oil will leak out once I remove that whole unit.
The lowerunit with the gearcase is fully closed, and the oil cannot leak out. even if you separate it from the uper unit.
The oil seal sits beneath the impeller housing.
beautiful, thanks for the info!
does anyone know if this video applies to a 2017 8 hp honda short shaft? bf8d BAAJ-1802359
Simple yet Awesome,
Hello Sir, I installed my new impeller kit (BF15D) and re-assembled it using your video. Great video. My question is, now it blows only air out the tube, no water. Prior to replacing, it wouldn’t move air or water. All my other lines are clear. Any ideas are much appreciated.
is tube correctly in the waterpumpoutlet? you see the tube lokking into the midsection of the outboard.
Or your Impeller is seated the wrong flow way.
Cat must have got his tongue!
Is that a 2-4-C grease he is applying everywhere?
I whatched you from Turkey Thank you so muck great job.
One added note, great to have motor up higher like he does here. I missed that front bolt and thought the lower unit was stuck on the power unit.
Anti seize on all bolts, lithium/dielectric grease on rubber parts during assembly.
Great video overall.
Nice vid. But never use an electric drill to open bolts on a outboard😀
I think the motor is spinning anti clockwise. The impeller might be wrongly installed.
Cherreh video when you have a good camera no need to talk but some people can't help but say at least something
can you remove the cover with 4 bolts above the lower gear instead shifting into gear to disconnect the linkage?
@19 sec. = disconnecting the linkage.
Great video! Really helpful for a motor imbesil like Me 😬
I wish all mechanics as thorough as he is. Excellent work.
Perfect! --- It's been many years since I've done this job and your video was very helpful. Thank you.
Perfekt. Dankeschön
My impeller is broken where can remove the rubber pieces
Beste Locomotion Watersportteam!
thanks lads
Agree, no talk needed. Get so put off by all those gabfests, hey? Goodonyamate!
Excellent video!!!
Way to much grease in there. Risk of all that clogging up the veins. Minimal grease for the initial start only. Also you forgot the gasket and seal.
I saw a seal, is there 2, and yeah the kit comes with a gasket for a reason I am assuming.
Cara mengeluarkan air d mesin tempel honda 20 pk gomna pak
De mucha ayuda, gracias!!!
make look easy , thank you for sharing
Very nice. NO vocal needed. Clear instruction.
Is this the same process on a 2006 BF9.9D? The video is a 10hp, but looks almost exactly like my 9.9. I have a new impeller being shipped to me by next week and will be doing exactly this. Also, is it necessary to grease everything like you did?
This is better for the impeller at the first startup
I was wondering what that white lube is you smeared every where? Lithium?
www.locomotionbreda.nl/onderhoud/sierra-olie/sierra-lagervet
Thank you.
So the answer is yes, it's lithium. I used a spray version.
Bedankt!
Thank you! Great vid.
Great video - did you put gear in reverse?
Great video top man👍
Thanks! Usefull video!
What is that white cream?
What's that white grease he's using?
Thank you perfect
Be nice if he talked a bit
Thanks bro
I mention the "o" ring.
OK. new guy here.
What is the white stuff he's applying to most parts?
Grease
hello what is this white fitted them because schmiren to the shaft for the impeller
Lithium grease
Thanks for the Vid. You guys need some shop music.
muy interesante
can you list the honda part numbers for the bf15d and the bf10d and thank you for the vidio
+Gina Maggio You mean the hole part list? Because in the end of the video you see the part number of the waterpump.
awesome video, I have a 15hp honda outboard bf15a and I have to change the impeller, do I have to drain the oil before I take the lower unit out?
No, the oil is in a different part of the lower unit.
There is a oil seal under the base of the waterpump.
So you can change the impeller without loosing oil.
But its always better to also change the oil, because this is the only way the check for leaks.
Wen there is water in the oil you also need to change the seals.(milky oil color)
And water and bearings don't go wel together.
perfect man thank you
Air atau pendingin
No indication whether it was necessary to remove the shift-linkage connecting pin at top of motor in order to remove the lower unit. I just did an older Honda 7.5hp and didn't know about that, ARRGH!
The reason the guy isn't speaking (English) is because he is in the Netherlands, Europe, and to his credit he realizes that speaking Dutch would detract from the universality of the mechanical procedure.
Completely alien concept to fascist-imperialist f'n US xenophobes!
Lately, add Brits...
There are many differences between a BF10/15 D and the older models like a 7.5hp!
Everything what you need to do for changing the impeller is in the video, I didn't let anything out!
You need a different video what is suitable for your model of Honda
@0:26 This is the only connection of the shiftrod between the uper and the lower unit on this type of Honda.
Hi would a 2006 Honda 40hp four stroke would that be the same procedure.as there is no water coming out the pee hole i have unblocked it ,motor had been sitting for over 12 months
Great video.
+Farmer2492 The procedure is almost the same, the only diffirence is the shift rod, on a 40hp model.
The shift rod turns and has a spline were its connects (sorry i dont have any pictures or video's)
Check also the thermostaat
You can also try to blow the peehole carefully with a compressor or bicycle Pump while engine is running.
And check the smal hose going to the peehole, maybe some thing in the hose wat is to big to pass the smale hole.
(sorry about the poor english, didn't had time to check the spelling)
Thank you very much yes i took leg off impeller was very badly worn fins had worn off
Would everything be the same for the 8hp model?
Was wondering that myself.
what was the lubricate he was using?
It is answered in the replies from about 2 years ago or 3 years
Hey I would like to know if that same impeller would work for a 9.9 ?
Honda? 9.9? What brand of engine do you have?
@@LocomotionBreda I was wondering the same thing. My honda four stroke looks identical to the motor in this video, but mine is a 9.9hp. I'm not sure what the exact year is. I'm hoping this fixes my engine, I run it, no water "pisses" out and I get a high pitched sounding alarm and my motor shuts off.
my 40 is counterclock
Excellent video
Great video, thanks
2:42 Hi, I have unscrewed the four screws at the side and the one screw at the back but I can't take off the bottom part. I hit it with a hammer but I can't take it off. I haven't opened it in 3 or 4 years. What else can I do?
There is a groove on the front point where the lower unit meets the motor that you can use to pry
Great ! Helped me .
Hallo
I like your video, but you have forgotten to show how to take care of the "o" under the pump cover.
Hello Pelopincho Cachirulo
@ 5:30 I put the O-ring back in the impeller housing.
Under the plates of the impeller is no O-ring only oil seals and a rubber gasket.
The video is about changing a impeller and not the complete kit.
Correct me if i'm wrong........... gr,
if you could only talk and explain what you're doing and what spray/lubricants you're using, this video is torturous trying to figure out wtf you're doing!! SPEAK MAN
There are many videos on youtube with people explaining everything, talking about how good they are.
The duration of the video wood be ten times longer.
And i need to urn my money to by fixing those outboards, i dont have time to talk al day.
I just make a quick movie inbetween the fixes.
But the biggest problem is I SPEAK DUTCH,
You don't need to explain anything. You have answered every question that has been asked in the comments section. These people just need to scroll down.
Locomotionbreda, your answer is awesome. Actually, you don´t need it. However, there this a question this man ask you that I was also wondering and I was about to post it in a new comment. What is it the spray and lubricants that you use. I have changed mine but I didn´t use any. Best regards
