Cross Stitch #26 - Part 2. Stitching skin 1 over 1

  • In this video I:
    Demonstrate how I stitched the skin tone on my Mirabilia piece using 1 over 1, to create a softer, more subtle look.
    Explain how to create blended stitches using the same technique.
    Demonstrate using a temporary outline and why I found it necessary.
    Compare the 1 over 1 and 2 over 2 stitches within the same area.
    Show the completed stitching on the Mirabilia so you can see the final outcome.
    Mirabilia Mermaid of Atlantis is stitched on 28ct Lugana. Stitching demonstration is shown on 28ct Linen.
    A WORD OF WARNING: This technique is not for everyone, as it is VERY time consuming and tedious.
    I recommend using a magnifier to help you as the stitches are very tiny.
    I hope you enjoy this video and find this tutorial useful. Please comment below with any questions or comments.

    Great idea for the skin tone- very pretty! I agree, the outline is key. Once I created the outline, I just decided to fill in but didn't really bother with matching up the stitch count- almost like staying in the lines in a coloring book. Thank heaven for magnifying lamps!
    Really appreciate your tutorials- I've learned so much from you :)

      Lone Star Stitcher Thanks so much - I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've noticed some of these type of designs their stitch count and outline are a bit off anyway, and I don't like seeing patches of no stitching around outlines - so this way is more accurate. Thanks for watching and happy stitching :) x

      Michelle Collins It's amazing how much we grow as stitchers! My 1 and only UFO is a christmas stocking I started for my daughter many years ago. The reason I put it away was the petite point (which I completely stuffed up). Now I can pull it back out with confidence knowing what I need to do... and that makes me super happy . Nothing worse than having a UFO on your conscience :) Thank you for your very kind words - I'm actually enjoying the tutorials (although they do take a while to organise lol). Happy stitching :) x

    Thank you so much for taking the time to help those of us who are "newbies". I have learned so much from your videos which are very well produced and your explanations are so clearly presented. The one over one skin tone stitches in addition to looking realistic appear to also show depth! I am sure both attributes will come in handy in my projects. Thanks again.

    Hi, I would like to thank you for your videos. I am a quilter and needle pointer but have never really done cross stitch, I came across your videos and decided to give it a try ( how hard can it be). I started with a haed design which is art work from a painter I have always admired, James Christensen. I purchased a PDF chart, threads and fabric, I didn't really know what I was doing but I did it anyway. I found I had a chart that is over 100000 stitches and is absolutely massive, I started it anyway. I unpicked three times after about 100 stitches and nearly went insane. My stitches were all crooked, my thread got tangled and knotted but I kept watching your videos and copied what you did. I have now completed one page, I am parking threads and taking your advice how to work. I am addicted, my stitches have got better and even though I know I may not finish it in the rest of my lifetime I will continue. So thank you again, you are a great teacher and extremely helpful. I live in NZ so I am just over the ditch.

    It has been good to come back to this video for a second time. I started my first 1/1 skin today (on Red - Mirabilia) and thought it looked really messy. So I'm glad you said it does look messy, because I was about to unpick it all and do 2/2! Thanks :D

    I've started a cross stitch where the whole thing is 1 over 1. I came here to make sure I was doing it right, because the stitches are so TINY! It's a 25 count linen piece, and wow. It's going to drive me crazy doing it this small. I only did one other project on linen before, but it was over 4, so it was a bit easier having the stitches bigger. Maybe I should have some kind of magnifier, so my eyes don't feel like they are going to bleed? LOL

    Thank you Carolyn for this tutorial. I had never attempted the petite Stitch until I worked on my Celtic Winter Lavender and Lace, I was going to rip it all out (argh) until you said the magic words, that it would look a little messy and uneven but it all works out in the end. I pulled out my wip and did a comparison to your mermaid (who by the way is beautiful) and voilà I won't have to frog. Thank you so much because my wip was going to be a UFO but, now it will be a finish hopefully by the end of Nov.

      +Diane Koski Hmmm that does sound like a lot of work, and very time consuming. Just remember, it will take 4 times as long to do it this way as each regular stitch = 4 miniature stitches. Maybe you can try on a test piece of fabric first? Best of luck Diane, I wish you the best with whichever method you decide to use.

    I grid with sulky sliver so that my needle doesn't pierce the thread as I stitch...perhaps sulky sliver would also be goo for marking the outline before filling it in. Sulky sliver is very easy to remove whether it's been stitched over or not. Just a thought :-)

    Thank you Carolyn, you did an Amazing job showing this video. when I start my red I would of done the skin wrong, I would of done 1 over 1, but not doing 4 boxes to be considered as one box. Thank you. I have been stitching for over 20 yrs or so now and I learn stuff every time watching everyone's tips and tricks. And I think you are amazing. Keep you videos coming. The next thing is I stitch in a hoop and I have several scroll and q snaps and can't figure how to get the just of stitching with them. When you have a millenium frame and done have a stand for it how do you stitch with it. Any ideas you can help? 👍👍👍💐💐💐💐💐💐

    • @TheFlosstubeStitcher
      @TheFlosstubeStitcher  9 років тому

      Deb Alb Thank you for your kind comments Deb. You're not alone... I'm still learning things too! Having done certain things the same way for 20+ years, and then discovering an easier way to do it.... is the best feeling ever! To answer your question: I can't use my Millennium frame without a stand because it's quite heavy (compared to the weight of a hoop). There's no way I can hold it in my hand and stitch, even with the smallest one. I use hoops for small projects, but I do find my hand cramps up after awhile from holding it. I've heard q-snaps are great to use (I don't own one), and I'm temped to try one and compare it to the hoops. Stitching with a stand, in my opinion, is the best way to stitch. It free's up both hands (as long as you have a good one with tight tension) so you can stitch twice as fast. I would suggest asking another stitcher who uses q-snaps if they can offer some advice to you on how to use it properly. Sorry I can't be of more help than that at this time, but it's hard to give advice on something I'm not familiar with :) I hope you find something that can be more comfortable for you, as for me the number 1 rule is to make sure I'm comfortable before I begin stitching. Happy stitching :) x

    So helpful. But for me the fabric is too much of a strain on my eyes. Your work is always so beautiful. Do you still use your floor stand?

      xx courtr5877 Yes it is quite a strain on the eyes, but my skin area was smaller than some others I've seen. I use a Millennium stand which I purchased at the same time as my Millennium frame. I wouldn't be without either of them, they're fantastic!Happy stitching :) x

    Great job! I like this design and yes - it is a great idea to do like this. Thank you for sharing with us. Just one question why you don`t try to make every next row of stitches stitching from empty hole to full? Hope you understand what I mean... It is more easy to make stitch starting from empty space and finishing in hole which already occupied by previous stitch. Please forgive my poor english.

      Irina Bõvalina Do you mean stitching from right to left instead of left to right? Sometimes I do, it just depends on the pattern of the chart. I taught myself how to cross stitch and just used the instructions on the chart at the time. Having stitched for 20+ years it's worked fine for me. Thank you for watching and happy stitching :) x

      Carolyn Mazzeo I mean to stitch rows from up to bottom and first stitch from bottom left to right up and second stitch from, bottom right to up left :) Or... if you stitch rows from bottom to up you make stitches in opposite direction - from up to bottom also. My favorite way to start my design from right up corner and go to left and down. All me stitches I make 1-st from left bottom corner to right up and 2-nd from right bottom to left up. So all my stitches start from empty hole.

      Irina Bõvalina Oh I see what you mean.... It would be easier to start from an empty hole. I've noticed a lot of people that use parking stitch this way. I might give it a go one day and see how it feels. It will probably feel a little strange, seeing as I've done it this way now for so long. :) x

    Great video, really helpful, I wanted to do 1 over 1 for my mirabilia sal as I think it looks really effective but I think it would be a bad strain on my eyes, definitely would like to invest in a magnifier so I could try it out:)

    • @TheFlosstubeStitcher
      @TheFlosstubeStitcher  9 років тому

      Pearlinstitches I cannot recommend a magnifier enough for this process. When I started doing it my eyes were really straining..... then I got my magnifier out, and it was like someone turned the light on! Made it so much easier and I was able to control how neat my stitches looked too, instead of just looking for the hole. Maybe try it out on a scrap of material first to see if you like it, before commiting to your project..... it's not the best to unpick either! Happy stitching :) x

    Love the look of one over one, but being legally blind, I would find it a challenge! Oddly, doing the first leg would be all right. It is when I am trying to complete the second leg that makes it difficult. So my question is.... have you or would you consider doing the delicate skin tones in tent stitch and the rest of the pattern in full cross?

    • @TheFlosstubeStitcher
      @TheFlosstubeStitcher  9 років тому

      Joyce Robertson Actually Joyce I have heard of it! If you wanted to do it in tent stitch then you would just use the 2 strands and complete it that way. If you have to blend 2 colours, then of course it simplifies that process too. I don't think the finished look would be compromised because the stitches are so tiny anyway, and you would have to get up really close to notice. I may consider trying it in future, just to see how it looks - possibly on a design which has a lot of skin tone showing. Thank you for bringing this up, I look forward to giving it a try. Happy stitching :) x

    Hi Carolyn, I was wondering if I am going to stitch 1 over 1 on a 36 count fabric, does one cross stitch on the pattern still represent 4 smaller cross stitches?

  • @BananFelimban

    Great video and I started doing my lady hera by mirabilia skin one over one on 32ct linen. Just one question though. How do you finish off and hide tails. It's so hard to pass needle through these tiny stitches at the back. For now I end from front after some unworked stitches and when I work these stitches I work over the tail like when you use waist knot method. But sometimes I finish with no more stitches so I need to weave ends. I hope you understand and able to help.. Thank you again..

    This doesn't have anything do to with the skin stitching (which I love) but is it ok to stitch the beads on with it on a scroll frame or not?

    • @TheFlosstubeStitcher
      @TheFlosstubeStitcher  9 років тому

      Dezzera Price HI! I was always told no but I was curious... so I tried it on my Mermaid. I didn't tighten the scroll too much, aware that I may crush the beads..... and although they didn't crush they did move and I had to alter their placement slightly. So I would recommend not stitching them on with the scroll frame if you don't want to have to fix them up later. Hope this helps :) x

    Caroyln, what size needles do you use for the 28 ct. I have DMC#28 size needles.

    • @TheFlosstubeStitcher
      @TheFlosstubeStitcher  9 років тому

      +Avis McDaniel Hi Avis, to be honest I'm not sure what size they are. I bought a packet of 50 a couple of years ago to use on one of those multi-needle holders, and I threw away the packet. They are probably a size 26 or 28. I actually use my needles until they tarnish and then I throw them away. Size 28 is the recommended size for 28ct fabric, so you'll be fine :) x

    I just found this video, but I have a question. How did you handle the fractional stitches or does stitching 1 over 1 take care of those because of how the numbers work out with 1 regular stitches being 4 tiny ones?

    • @TheFlosstubeStitcher
      @TheFlosstubeStitcher  9 років тому

      Faith L Hi Faith! You got it right! Where fractional stitches are concerned, only 1 or 2 of the stitches need to be completed, instead of all 4 (depending on exactly where the backstitch line is coming through the stitch). That's the reason why I like to do a faux outline first and then I know exactly which areas of the 1/4 or 3/4 stitch need to be filled in with the tiny little stitches. Hope that makes sense? :)

    • @SALaserKitten
      @SALaserKitten 9 років тому
