I've put so many things off because I was scared I'd stuff it up... I've learnt to just give it a try and see what happens. Things are never as bad as you imagine :)
Awesome tutorial. Thank you for sharing. I have always stuffed my pin cushions with sheep fleece. I wash the fleece just enough to get the dirt out but keep some of the lanolin in it. This prevents my pins from rusting. I've been doing this for 30+ years and have never had a rusty pin. ;)

He would have been able to supply me with endless amounts back then, if I'd known about it. I had a conversation with him recently about DMC and I told him it was made in France. He disagreed with me and said it was made in China, because everything is these days. He was so convincing, I had to do some research online just to make sure of what I was talking about. He owes me an apology LOL. :)

Carolyn, thanks for this very informative tutorial. FYI, crushed walnut shells can be found in the pet supply area in places like Walmart. They are used for many things, including cat litter or lining animal cages. They are really great for homemade pincushions because they add dead weight to the item and the shells really do keep pins and needles sharper. Often you will find that craft people will sell a small amount of the crushed walnut shells (like 8 oz) for $7 or $8 USD. That is a rip off as they are no different than the huge bag of 8-10 lbs you can buy in the pet supply area for $9 to $10 USD. Believe me, they are identical. I also add lavender to the walnut shells in pincushions so I get sharper pins and the light scent of lavender when using the pincushion.
The crushed walnut shells are called "Lizard Litter" and can be found in most pet supply stores! Identical to the crushed walnut shells I purchased from an on-line quilt store at a much lower price! LOVE your beautiful handwork! Thank you for sharing!

I've only just now become interested in everything cross stitch after watching the talents of every stitcher on you tube, where beautiful and inspiring pieces seem to come to life, so fascinating. valletta654 A biscornu is a pincushion. Biscornu is French and means skewed, quirky or irregular. I cannot draw or paint, so I find cross stitch is a great way to produce my own kind of art. I find the whole process very therapeutic and relaxing.... and at the end I have a beautiful piece of artwork to display anyway I wish. I hope you decide to learn how to cross stitch - I'm certain you will enjoy the benefits of it. Thanks for watching :) x

valletta654 I guess it all depends on how careful you are with it. You can iron some interfacing onto the rear of the design before assembling it (to protect the stitches more), but if I had done that to this piece, it would have covered up the holes from the diamond eyelet stitches in the centre. You can fill it will fibrefill (wadding), crushed walnut shells, weighted pellets, and I believe also pencil sharpenings! I would advise against sand, as it would seep through the holes in the cross stitch fabric. I hope you do give it a try! Happy stitching :) x
