This is the first Guy Clark song I ever heard, when a friend with impeccable and eclectic taste put me on to it. I would say I can't understand why he isn't better known, but I do. His lyrics and music were songs with everything that wasn't essential stripped out. That isn't likely to make you popular; but it does make you great.
So many of the great American poets got weaker in their ability to write as they aged, but Guy weaved tapestries of prophetic prose right up until the day he was laid in the ground. The biggest compliment he ever got was that he was never played much on mainstream radio, because his words, those awe-inducing lyrics, his haunting, crackling ghostly voice, and his beautiful strumming was only truly appreciated by those who could grasp the immense layered complexity within his simple verses. A songwriter could live 1,000 years and not pen as perfect and as heart-wrenching a song as Guy penned with Dublin Blues. It’s all there: immense love overflowing, the pain of staring down old age, of unrequited love, and of the echos of a life so full of beauty and pain that one can simply do nothing but listen in complete silence as he sings. You are dearly, dearly missed Guy!

jeezus harold christmas... you got me tearing up over here brother. 🥺🥺🥺 i’m an hour north of Austin right now, and all i’m doing tonight is listening to Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. your words are perfect !!! 👌🏼
"Forgive me all my anger, forgive me all my faults, there's no need to forgive me, for thinking what I thought: I loved you from the get-go, and I love you till I die" So many beautiful lines throughout this song
A lot of people think “He Stopped Loving Her Today” by George Jones is the best country song. I don’t know that there’s one “best.” This one is up there though.
This song always gets me choked up a little...i fell in love with his music back in 92' when i was in college in Texas. I had never even heard of him til then...its the first time i could feel what real country music could be (tho i would call his style folk/country). He's one of the original "Cowboy Poets". A great singer songwriter. I miss being able to hear him play live and in person...but all good things must come to an end...eventually.
One of the 'cosmic cowboys' along with townes, earle, young well in fact too many to mention. To me it's more than country..in fact I'd call it the start of 'Americana' as a proper genre and in the last ten years (as most times happens cos it seems everything is cyclical) the people they inspired now have found great success themselves. Often described (I'd agree) a 'songwriters songwriter' . Regards from Ireland to ya brother.
If you're ever in Austin, do yourself a favor and have dinner at the Texas Chili Parlor. Get yourself a Mad Dog Margarita, and tell them Guy Clark sent you.
Out of all the musicians that we've lost this year the 2 that have shocked & hurt me the most because they are musical heroes of mine were Steve Young & Guy Clark. Dublin Blues is a perfect album, not a bad song on it, but then again Guy doesn't know how to write a bad song.
skeetabix36 I didn't know till I read this. I used to drive around Hill Country in summer with my windows down in 2007 when I was gifted Dublin Blues. Jesus, I miss Texas sometimes.
A beauty. Reminds me of so many great songs. Gillian Welch. Mercenary Song by Steve Earle. Outlaw Song by 16 Horsepower. Lover by Lilium. Heartbreakers all.
I was just listening to a recording by Bob Dylan called Bob Dylan - New York, 1961 and the first song hit home hard, I know that I heard this song sung differently by the great Guy Clarke called The "Dublin Blues, have I got this wrong I believe not., so thanks a million Bob, & thanks a million Guy
That's about the only way you can have Hiatt, Ely and Lovett on the stage and they don't need to do a thing other than sit in deference. What a song...Hard to imagine any song that is much better than Dublin Blues. RIP Guy
As much as I love Guy, and I do(Boats To Build & Dublin Blues as studio albums are brilliant works of art🙏🎶), he simply didn’t get the “performance gene”, and is sadly uninspiring as a live artist. Sorry, Guy, find a pair of balls, or stick to the studio….And if the excuse is that he’s aged here, I saw him live in ‘94 and even then he faded into the wallpaper…… and I’d say the same for Lucinda Williams as well. Brilliant in the studio, but weak & ineffectual as a live artist. I guess every singer-musician can’t be Bruce Springsteen…🎶🙏😞

Quite simply the best country song ever written....
For me, "Long Black Veil" would be the best. It is the Citizen Kane of country songs.
@walliegirl2 my thoughts exactly.. this is quickly rising the ranks tho!

Wonderful poet. He was so down to earth but then over the moon with his songs. He should of been inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame!
Such mastery. Not a note nor word wasted. The silence to let the words sink in. This hits like a truck.

One of the most beautiful songs, sung by a master RIP Mr. Clark
Yes, a good version, but listen to "Lost Dog Street Band"!
As Steve Earle referred to him ‘Goodbye Michelangelo’
Made me cry... What a beautiful song.
