So I don't really use Linux that much(Just for deployment and stuff) and most of my videos are also made on Windows 10, but the one thing I really love is you're not a gatekeeper and really enjoy using Linux. And that's the dealbreaker, the end result. The best OS is simply which gets the job done smoothly and reliably for the user.

for windows users: in prison youre in prison, you have no freedom, but you have a guarantee that the plumbing works, 3 meals per day, clothes, roof, bed, lights come on every morning. in the wilderness nobody is there coddling you or doing anything for you, but youre completely free. life truly is what you make of it. losers are better off in prison than being free. you will never ever have the same familiar comforts in the wilderness that you have grown accustomed to in your prison cell. windows is the prison cell, linux is the wilderness. linux does not need to change to become more "user friendly" it already is user friendly, just not friendly to people who refuse to think for themselves. stop trying to make linux into windows with your lazy slave-think.

sorry, but what nonsense, I've never felt trapped in any technical system and I'm free in everything I do with Windows, because that too - like Linux or MacOS - is just an operating system and nothing more, only a simple framework for the applications that are based on and used and only the applications are what really counts and most of them don`t care about the system they run on, otherwise there are alternatives for everything ..... and luckily, my real life offers me a lot of other more important, exciting and beautiful things than just and predominantly dealing with some kind of operating system for some computer, but I don't sit in front of machines for days either ... not in this life
sorry again, but I mean exactly such comments as a negative example when dealing with and the attitude towards something as simple as a computer operating system is predominantly shaped only or mainly by ideology ... no ideology is good in the long term, regardless of the topic because idiologies are always only one-sided and far from any tolerance towards being different and everything one-sided is never good ... sorry, that is my view of things and everyone can see it differently

    Hey Chris,
What you said today, Linux gives you the opportunity to make it what you want, to create what you want. That was the main reason given for using Linux in the early 2000s when I started. That is what drew me to Linux despite all of the issues and challenges that existed then. That is still what keeps in me Linux. I don't think that Linux is for everyone. It is for people like us. I believe that it was built by people like us. OTB posted a video this weekend that basically said that Linux is fine just as it is. It doesn't have to be THE DESKTOP and IMHO it shouldn't be because it would necessarily have to lose what I love most about it. Great Video and awesome message. You said what has been in my heart for years. 🙂🙂🙂🙂
You said you were a "little burnt" on computers when you started this channel. Go back and look at that first video you did on windows. That guy wasn't just a "little burnt". That guy looked like the walking dead. Linux brought you back to life. Linux brought real joy back into your life. I've watched it happen. I'm a pretty good people reader, sometimes scarey good. 😉

Honestly, for home use at least, I kinda feel like a newb friendly Linux distro is the ideal OS for the majority of people.
My dad has two programs open on his computer all the time. Chrome and Thunderbird. Occasionally file explorer for losing pictures and randomly creating a bunch of empty 'New Folder(s)'
Most people are like my dad - they look at web pages and they check email and randomly create 'New Folder(s)' everywhere
Linux does web browser and email just as good as Windows as in most cases, its the same software users on Windows are familiar with.
Except for Home, it won't let you create 'New Folder' everywhere though, but I think people can do without that.

I used Linux as my only OS years ago when Ubuntu actually looked like they could take Linux mainstream. It never happened, as far as I could tell because of the infighting in the community (as usual). I went back to windows, but still try Linux every so often. If anything things have gone backwards. Everything is far to fragmented, and yes I know that's one of the points of Linux (customisation) the Linux community needs to realise however that Linux is never going mainstream without some serious consolidation. Most people just want to sit in front or their PC and for it to just work, and that experience is far more likely for the majority of people on Windows than any flavour of Linux. I really want to be able to switch to Linux, but baring some really serious blunders from Microsoft, Linux is going to remain a niche use case, and I suspect quite a few in the Linux community will be pleased at that prospect.

My own experience with Windows has been disappointing since Windows 10. It seems more temperamental than previous versions, and I've had to solve many problems that I haven't experienced before. I've been a Windows user since Windows 3.1. Some examples: after a major Windows update in 2016, I found my computer would hang shortly after boot up. This happened 2 weeks before my final university exams, so you can imagine how stressful this was! I later found out that Windows was clashing with my Brother printer software. They had been coexisting without problems before the update. Other problems: slow to boot and load programmes (solved by increasing my RAM and later upgrading to a SSD hard drive), inconsistent and unstable connection to my wifi, and more. Having to upgrade my hard drive to an SSD to fix an incredibly slow Windows seems more than most people should have to put up with.
By comparison, Linux has been stable and runs smoothly, even on bottom-of-the-range computers. I now spend most of my time using Linux.
The one downside of Linux is having to configure the computer correctly after installation, to make sure it can do what you want it to do. That might involve finding out about and installing additional under-the-bonnet software so the programmes you want can run. An example is having to install the "restricted extras" and libdvd packages to Ubuntu before being able to play DVDs. This requires some geeky skills - but it only needs to be done once. After that, everything is plain sailing.

Linux, to me, is a return to the actual art of computing. Windows or Mac have their specific use cases where you state: "I use my computer to do X task." That task could be playing games, or editing a video, or writing a novel. The point is, there is some end goal outside of computing that is being considered, and the computer is merely a tool to get that done. It's not always this way, but that's typically the way I see non-Linux users. With Linux, the use case is more "What can I do with my computer? How far can I push it? What is it capable of?" It's more computing for computing's sake. The tool becomes the subject.
I like to participate in off-roading activities, where the end goal is the journey. We build up custom 4x4s for the sole purpose of seeing what they are capable of doing. Sure, your stock Subaru can get you to the trailhead so you can go camping or hiking. But in the 4x4 community, we want to see what our gear is actually capable of. I think this is similar to Linux where the destination is in the journey.
Ham radio is also similar in that hams like to tinker and find out what they (and their equipment) are capable of. There's often a sense that ham radio is useless in today's world of global cell phone communication, but that's not the point to hams. Using their own equipment (that they may very well have built themselves) to communicate with someone around the world without using commercial infrastructure is the challenge and the reward.

Great video!! What I want more linux users to admit is like you mentioned the end task of the end user. You talk about creativity and tinkering. For a Linux user their "Project" is Linux in a lot of ways. So as you say they get the creativity and tinkering enjoyment out of linux. However another user may be equally as copmpetent on a computer but their thing that they tinker and create with is editing a video or photo that they shot on their camera, or someone designing a new product, or doing engineering work. Take scientific research for example, a lot done on linux but the reality is to the scientist linux is just the platform their goal and their creative tinkering output is their research.
I just wish people would be more honest that in a lot of ways people use linux because they are interested in linux.

To be creative is to create something new... selecting a new color/layout or programm is not creating something new... it's just selecting not more or less... The OS is a tool... you have to use the tool to create something / to be creative...

The typical linux installation have programs that are made by different people/groups across the world and this means these programs are designed from ground up to be easily composable with other programs on linux and that give us the power to make whatever we want it to be by composing programs together, whereas on windows/osx all the components/programs are built by one single organization hence they are tightly integrated and not easily composable.

I am the computer geek in my family, and my Dad (who occasionally needs my tech help) asked me how I know all this stuff. When I thought about it, it also explains why I like Linux. I told my Dad you need two things to learn about computers:
    1. Time
    2. Curiosity
I told my Dad that he could learn much of what I know because he has plenty of time, since he's retired. But without curiosity, he never will. My Dad is into watching sports, and he knows a lot about it, but he has no curiosity about computers or how to use programs or learning how to get the most out of them. I think it's the whole android vs Apple debate (but to a greater extent). On Apple you are restricted to on what you can download and what you can do, but things are more likely to just work. Whereas on android you can download from anywhere but have a chance of breaking things. Obviously you can jailbreak/custom Rom both systems but that's a further argument.

*When you don't know that you don't know, you know everything*
*When you know you don't know, you know nothing*
    That's the difference between Linux & Windows/Mac

If you have Linux you have every os running very well emulated.
You can get sosumi for osx
And wine to run any windows based program.

Well as car mechanic you probably use Windows XP most of the time and if you are Engineer/R&D you use Windows 10 for CAD programs (Catia, NX Graphics) and if you program microcontroller you use Windows 7/10 (for Siemens software) + Linux (for programming hardware). BTW I am big fan of how things work under Windows from user perspective around Windows "you need to install correct driver to make your hardware work at all on this system" era when changing shells was possible and you could did true magic from registry level (obvious security flaw), the days when dlls and other low level stuff was more friendly for tinkerers and less friendly to normal user.

@NEED2CONNECT Didn't know Linux runs Catia. Since when if I may ask? Automotive Industry excluding Daimler Group runs Catia exclusively. Volvo, Volkswagen Group runs Catia. Boeing and most Aviation business runs NX Graphics. I didn't ment me "dear". How that works out for Linux?
Edit: Forgot to mention I know at least 8 companies that work in R&D prototyping that works on either Catia or NX Graphics that design stuff for big companies mentioned above so I am surely not talking about me as I work mostly in DevOps and programming field so I don't even touch CAD stuff but since I have so friends who are designers I happen to spoke with them about their work from time to time.

I use linux because I like to use it. Not because I need it, it's just because I'm learning how to work in different environments. My main laptop has dual boot windows10 and Ubuntu, my secondary low end laptop has Mint xfce and my phone is an Iphone 12. So I guess I just like to use it, just that. Great video!
