I don't think you quite understood what you were saying when you criticized NT.
NT is absolutely fine. Heck, even better than Linux in some areas. And it is about as old, if not younger, than Linux.
The problems don't stem from NT. Far from it, actually. Drivers and kernel-mode processes run better than ever before.
It's the crap that runs on top of it that's bad and that's Windows itself. The shell, the UX, everything surrounding it is absolute poo and deserves to be scrutinized. But the kernel, out of all components in Windows, is one of, if not the best components of Windows to this very day.
What _doesn't_ help are the bugs introduced in some well established parts of Windows, namely Win32. I must be the only one who discovered that Microsoft started doing some strange things to it with 11 which breaks some older apps and standardized features. (Example: VK_NULL is now a floating bit in 11, where in 10 and before it wasn't. Or how address family in winsock2 defaults to IPv6 now instead of v4 when it's unspecified. Looking any of this up loops back to my own Github repos on Google...)
That being said, all of that is userspace and not the kernel. And the Windows userspace absolutely sucks.

VK_NULL? I think I remember watching Handmade Hero, does it have something to do with keystrokes? Second of all, I'd like to see an open reimplementation of the Windows userspace, with the proprietary NT kernel at the core. Probably will never happen but it's a cool idea to think about!

Side notes for a new user:
    - Changing your desktop, or adding another for that matter doesn't need a re-installation. It can be done with the default "store" but i prefer the gui application Synaptic or cli tool aptitude to help with this sort of thing on Debian based distributions (Ubuntu, Pop, etc.). Nix is not a good idea for a beginner.
    - Your DaVinci issues were unclear, i have never had issues installing it on Debian, currently using it in fact.
    - Proton is a modified version of Wine, meaning you can use the large number of tools available for managing your Proton containers, like Lutris.
    - Using distrobox for random software is going to make your life hell.
    - CentOS is dead, and "Stream" is not the same OS.
    - The current UA-cam Linux community is full of bad recommendations for niche unsupported systems.

For beginners, I would think the obvious choices would be Ubuntu (or one of its variations), Mint, PopOS, or perhaps OpenSUSE. For something with just a bit more technical know how involved, possibly Debian or Fedora. Then Arch for the more technical if they also like bleeding edge software, and perhaps Slackware if they don't want bleeding edge (but be prepared to do much of your own package management). Of course, sometimes very technically capable people still use one of the "easier" distributions. Then of course you can also go exploring if you want something off the beaten path.

Issues like this still happen on windows and mac especially with complex software. It's just that linux users get a little too creative sometimes with certain apps. Ive been playing Sekiro, Cyberpunk2077 and Zelda Tears of the Kingdom regularly. I started using Hyprland because of how beautiful it is. I've never seen anything like it. Yeah, I hadn't paid much attention to gaming on linux for awhile. I have a linux work computer, then I keep a separate windows computer in a DMZ specifically to be treated as just a gaming console. But about a year ago I installed linux (dual booting) on my windows box to check it out and I was legit blown away at how good it's gotten. Since then it's really quite rare that I need to start the windows side, almost everything I care about works very well on linux. I've used DWM for years but Hyprland is definitely on my list.

Hyprland is great! The animations alone are great. I used it with Artix, but after seeing that NixOS is one of the very supported distros, I thought I should try it and that's what I'm running right now. Normally with these kinds of setups, I would spend hours setting up and customizing my install, only to later decide that it's broken and I should just reinstall for a clean system. With NixOS, because everything is decoratively configured, I know what's going on with my system and I can always rollback if something goes wrong.

Honestly, there are only few distros that are actually worth using, the rest are just forks of other distros with a few customizations for the sake of user friendliness. Debian and Arch are now the go-to distros for a stable or bleeding edge system. Linux Mint and Kubuntu are solid for beginners coming from Windows, but honestly, Debian is also solid now if you can navigate the installer with your keyboard. There are of course other unique and interesting distros that serve their purpose. I am currently using NixOS, which uses a configuration file for setting up your whole system. Gentoo has its uses for really minimal embedded systems, or if you hate yourself and want to compile every program you use.

From choosing the distro you want, I went through Manjaro, Nobara, Pop, Ubuntu ,Mint, Solus, and ended up sticking with Pop. There are occasional issues, and sometimes I do miss the simplicity of Windows a bit, but Linux has made me happy. The terminal is, I think, the thing I've had open the most throughout the system, lol. But it just feels good after a few months to install Linux on another computer and have it customized to your liking in less than half an hour. These are things I wouldn't change for anything. Linux has rekindled my fascination and curiosity for computers. There are times when you can show off your skills, and other times when people might tease you for having to install an extension just to set up the audio output lmao but I guess that is in fact, the linux experience.

Stable lags behind other distros, because it is extremely careful and deliberate with its changes. It's meant for very sensitive servers.
Debian unstable is closer to Ubuntu, but without the snap crap and appstore.
Mint is much the same as Ubuntu, but with much of the crap from ubuntu disabled rather than missing.

Yeah, on the back of this, a "stable" distro, means it changes infrequently. So they often use really old packages. You can pretty much guarantee which version of packages you'll have based on the version of the distro.
"Unstable" distros mean it changes more frequently, will use newer versions of packages that aren't as well tested.
In general, a user of a their own personal computer will probably want an unstable distro, so packages are more up to date, so that compatability with the newest things are at it's highest. (There's a good reason valve decided to switch to an Arch base for steam os)

Only when the guard dog ran away did he realize life alone without a master is not as good as it was cracked up to be. Abandoning Windows to use open source software seems like becoming a stray dog. You have to learn to care of your own problems with your Linux distro. And a lot of those problems will be with compatibility. Just like in the old Windows 95 - 98 days. You sometimes installed something and it didn't work, or worse, it broke your entire OS! One of the best things I like about a modern mainstream OS is you don't have to sweat such compatibility issues anymore. So far, it has been a deal breaker for me. Debian is extremely stable, and is way more used for servers wich need this stability. Hey, good vid. Some notes:
    - Debian is not really a dekstop distro. The current Deb 12 has -at the moment- reasonably fresh packages, but it will fall behind other distros over time because of it's nature. This "stable approach" is a good thing for machines like servers but not too good in the desktop where you expect regular updates on kernel and GPU drivers and desktop environments.
    - XFCE was a fast DE in the past, but it got som fat in the recent years while still looks outdated. On that front, LXQT may be a better choice
    - In the Debian / Ubuntu family, Linux Mint is a far better choice for desktop. Thing like installing nVidia drivers is just one click in the GUI.
Mint has many DE choices, but the "default" Cinnamon DE is actually a very similar (but better) experience like what you got with Win7 / 10.
    - I really can't stand Gnome DE, it is too restrictive for my taste, I'm a KDE lover guy. But I would stick with Pop! OS to use a Gnome DE, they did great with that and Pop! OS does get fresh packages often.

IMO people generally misunderstand the idea of passthrough. Single GPU passthrough is essentially a more seamless dual boot, it's not like an interactive VM (a'la vmware). Dual GPU passthrough unless you go through the hassle of setting up looking glass is more like having 2 pcs.

Hi, first of all, welcome to Linux! I hope you have a fantastic experience in the future.
Second of all, you dont _need_ a second GPU for GPU passthrough, as I can personally corroborate. It's a hell of a lot easier if you have a GPU to spare, but it is still possible with a single GPU.
Second of all, when talking about Ableton Live, I had the exact same experience running FL Studio in Wine. Seriously, I was blown away by how well it works.
Also, I'm surprised you chose Debian as your distro; that was my first Linux experience, but it wasn't all that good since during the install, I kinda messed up the root password thing and I couldn't use sudo. A half a year later I tried Linux Mint and I kind of fell in love with it afterwards. Anyway, good luck!

I too was considering switching to Ubuntu and I even install that on a really fast USB drive. I could switch to Ubuntu but I find things just work easier and windows is that what most developers aim for.
Plus with WSL I have a full Linux install with the desktop and everything. You could even set it up where you could just run the apps from Linux on top of your native windows desktop.
My overall takeaway of Linux is that they really need to standardize and improve the applications. Just have one way to install applications.

I installed multiple different Linuxes from the late 90's to early 10's, but always spent my time fiddling with something or trying a new variant or searching for drivers or whatever, (all of which dissapointingly still seems to be the case now and takes up the main part of this vid) .
11 or so years ago was the last time I bothered, then i just went Mac. Now i just actually use my computer for computing and dont spend hours messing with all the issues you mentioned.
If i ever did move Id go for MInt since that seems simple and stable and a friend has it and has a good experience with it, but i doubt id end up with anything much different to what i do now, eg actually use a computer for computing and not spend half my day messing with the underlying OS..

In the mean time I'm getting familiar with using Linux through WSL, not the most native experience, but its experience non the less.
