dont go for the plastic liner. your thoughts about keeping it all natural is the right one. You need to find a water source that will flow into the pond. Coz right now water in it is affected by evaporation, soil absorption and animal consumption. But there is no replenishing happening. If a small brook or a natural spring is there on your farm then it would help.

    • @livlovely2707
      @livlovely2707 4 роки тому

Do you have well water? If u do then there is a spring down deep somewhere. Also if there is a stream on your property, depending on how far away it is, you may be able to redirect some of the water...But whatever you do, even with an underground spring, August is a tough month for ponds in New England. They seem to dry up to almost nothing. If they created a lake with fountains and water displays at Versailles in the 1600s, then you can do it at GSF!

Im sure you’ve already considered this - but about your pond - you might want to find a stream or something where you could reroute some of the water to have flow to it....
any still water will disappear if there is no added water at all - especially when animals are a drinking from it and with the sun on it every day....
It all depends on where the water table is in your area....
but even if you line the pond somehow, you will still have ‘disappearing’ water if it’s not replenished....

At 14 minutes you can separate the video into two different stories. Make Margie (praying she shows up) the narrative of one video and the pond a separate video. It will reduce the time (read attention span) of each video and create additional content allowing for more advertising dollars you can use to put back into the farm.

In regards to the plastic liner, I have a pond in my backyard that has been around for several years, and as far as I can tell the plastic liner has not decayed. The only damage it has suffered is from the occasional muskrat that shows up and decides to punch through it. My pond is also lined with clay, so that probably helps.

I don't know where is Margie, but I have few good advice.
You have a nutrition problem amongst the chikens. In the video at 5:18 you may see that Margie tear out a feather from the other animal and eats it. That is not because she isn't like the other type of hen but it's reason is nutrition problem. The same reason you may see at 2:32 on the other hen, her feather was tear out by the other chickens. At least it is very similar to that symptom what I experienced several year ago.
It's reason can be the following for example:
    1. The corn and other cereals has a lack of important proteins, 5 or 6 essential protein (like methionine, lysine, tryptophane). There is several good product what you can mix amongst the natural forage. In your country I don't know exactly what you can use, but I'm sure there is something.
    2. The other nutrition problem may be the lack of calcium, that can cause similar symptom.
You should mill your forage insted giving the seed in whole. If my information correst around 15% of the ingested forage is wasted to mill by the hen. Not needed to mill like flour, to snap a corn seed into 4-5 pieces is enough. I use 5 millimeter pitted sifter in my grinder machine.
And give them salt. The natrium is very importan mineral for every living being.
For example I use this: 50% grain, 25% corn, 25% pea, 3 type of calcium source, salt, vitamin mixture. And in the water I mix vinegar, several bacteria can't endure the rancid environment.
For detailed guidance you may read a specialized textbook, that can help much more than me.
    P.s.: your farm is nice!

When we used to have chicken, it also happen to loose hens without knowing what happen to them, but sometime days later we find them in the most impossible place sitting on a clutch of eggs. After that every time a chicken disappear, we search them in the most secluded place we could think of. So maybe Margie is brooding somewhere, but with all the predator around you farm, i wouldn't be hopefull to be honnest.

Margie was quite a character, but, these things happen on a farm.
Toby does a good job for a solo dog btw, a second barn dog (I know you were already planning on it) would be the best idea. Don't beat yourself up too much, live and learn.
I do think Tobydog is a bit overburdened with all being said (hard for him to focus on all the different flocks diverging in all directions), when he reaches proper age, getting another dog would certainly help protect that large spread of free ranging animals during the day.
You are doing a good job as a new farmer, you're certainly bettering, don't be too afraid to expand next year with more chickens or a few pigs (not for the pond, but if they can help then solid bonus).
    Best of luck.

Crossed fingers that your feather baby gets better and hope lil barn cat is getting stronger and full of lots more energy every day that passes 2020 has been horrid and I'm hoping the torture we've all gone through and suffered will end with a better year next. Lots of love to you Morgan and alison and all the animals at goldshaw farm 💖

my grandpa has a farm that has a pond and he said that he put clay in it a while back and let his cows go in there to stomp it down into the dirt a while back but fast forward to the present its a pretty lively pond, has trees all around, blue gill , and even some turtles live in there. also the pond is kinda in between two hills which probably helped it alot being that its basically a giant slide for rain water. another thought maybe if you can get some plants to grow in there, the roots can kinda give the bottom some structure and help hold water.

One thing I can think of to help the pond is getting a bunch of large flat rocks laying them out over the bottom of the pond and covering it in sand and gravel. If you can get some clay too that will also be a good idea to mix in clay to keep it all held together.

Don't give up hope just yet. I lost my favorite chicken once too, I call her Boss because she's a bantam but she can hold her own against just about anyone in the yard. She moves like a boxer when other chickens try to spur her and once she finds an opening spurs them hard. One day she disappeared and I thought a hawk got her but then several weeks later I found her bringing back nine babies.... Those chickens are sneaky with laying eggs and when they go broody they go broody hard. I hope your story has a happy ending. If anyone can survive in the wild, it's Margie.

Morgan, PLEASE keep quarantining that sick hen! I'm glad you're giving her some stuff to help perk her up, but do be careful. You say it's not coccidiosis, but it can be hard to tell until it's too late. Cocci can wipe out an entire flock within days.

  • @lamoon1525

I'm not one to blindly suggest stuff...but as I said, I was raised on a farm, and my father was also a Farm Drainage Contractor. Now he's been gone for over 10 yrs, so he's not an option...but there are several fine businesses near you. They'd be able to advise you on your pond, and give you environmentally sound ways to save it, or get rid of it. Which ever you prefer. The Land Improvement Contractors of America could also recommend someone near you. I wish you every good luck...it warms me to see people who genuinely care for the land and their animals.

New here and as a long time poultry person you need to look and see if Marge is setting on infertile/fertile egge from herself or others (ducks/geese). Those Easter Egger's are excellent hiders and she may also be enclosed somewhere. Happens quite often, I know it has to me, hee hee hee. If you didn't find a trail of her feathers, yeah. Next I suggest you worm your entire flock and treat for mites. Look for mites in and around their vents and ears. If you do worm them make sure you check the label/s for when you can consume their eggs. Good luck but don't give up! Thanks for sharing!👍
