- This video documents my attempt to have geese hatch goose eggs. This hatching video will show you the process from start to finish in a video diary format. Will we hatch out goslings at the end of this video?

About Gold Shaw Farm: Gold Shaw Farm is more of a farm-in-progress than an honest-to-goodness farm. Our dream is that someday we are able to transform our 150+ acre parcel of land into a regenerative and productive homestead and farm.
Must be a thankless job to care for Justin considering every morning it's like: "WE MEET AGAIN MY ARCH NEMESIS!!"
It's actually one of the funnier parts of my day. It happens every dang morning!
@@GoldShawFarm who needs those tigers if your vicious guard goose has it all covered already
tbh can't tell if justin thinks he's batman or the joker XD

Hi
God, birds make the funniest sounds when they're angry. We have a really broody chicken who gets LIVID when we get her off the eggs, and it cracks me up.
I hope she's also a great all around mom and her chicks take after her ! If so, You are lucky !
Same but the hens only make the weird noises when someone other than me is checking, if I’m checking they just cluck at me.
Literally
Oh my goodness for real! I had a broody hen who i let sit on a clutch of eggs and all of them went bad... we took them away and shes been walking around for WEEKS puffed up and mad... shes been taking out her frustrations on our geese and our sweet little barred rock rooster i almost feel bad for it but aint nobody got time for no stinky rotting eggs 😂
Terry Russel (:
Those goslings are gonna become apex predators one day , the amount of ankles bitten will be immense
The farm is becoming dangerous!
That hissing would have made Jurassic Park more terrifying.
@GoldShawFarm if geese eggs are oiled can they still hatch? And can the oil be wipep off

No wonder Justine has been biting you...you’re bothering his ladies. They are a family unit so they’ll protect and keep the babies at all cost!
Love that you’re letting them be together. It’s really hard to just let go and trust nature sometimes, especially when there’s little ones involved, but I think that especially given the weather you were having when they started hatching, you’re doing exactly the right thing. You have a definite close flock there...two very good moms with excellent mothering instincts and Justin is one heck of a protective gander. Pretty clear they all want to stay together, so good on you for recognizing that! I don’t know about anyone else, but I will happily wait to see what will emerge when it’s time! ❤️
But also - YAY! GOSLINGS! 🥰🥳
Well said!
I wonder what exactly that behavior was where all 5 of the geese, male and female were all hissing and being aggressive towards that gosling.
@@rdizzy1 They were keeping gosling inline or trying to groom. But they were not aggressive toward it
@@death13a That is by all definitions aggressive behavior for geese, especially female geese.
@@rdizzy1 My guess is that they were perhaps unsure about, or even a little afraid of the gosling. This is, after all, their first time experiencing hatching, and they appeared to be just hissing/bluffing rather than all-out biting/attacking. Also, the hissing intensified when the gosling was moving around, so they were probably just confused, like, "What the heck is this fuzzy little creature?" "AH! IT'S MOVING!" It probably just took a little longer for them to get used to it and let their parental instincts kick in. Later in the video, at about 19:30, you can see that they have gotten used to the goslings, and the hissing/aggression has disappeared, replaced by curiosity.

I just want to say that I so appreciate you guys sharing your farm lives with all of us. It continues to be a little oasis in the middle of everything that's going on. I also appreciate that you're working on letting your birds be birds and seeing what works and what doesn't. Thanks for sharing it with us.
Thank you!
hey morgan just want to say i really really appreciate all the freakin effort you take to put out these videos!! editing and setting up cameras, adjusting angles, can get soo tedious and frustrating at times. but thanks for all the good content.
youre the only farm-related channel i consistently watch haha
Thank you!
Same here. I'm binge watching.
I just love Justin so much lol regardless of his aggression, you know he's just looking after his flock. I mean he was standing guard! That's amazing! And admittedly, I find his relative angry demeanor to be simply hilarious. Cheers !!

I knew something was up when one day last week, I realized only three were headed for the water. I wanted to ask, but was afraid of sounding stupid if it had already been discussed and I'd missed it. Hadn't thought of a nest. Was worried there had been an accident/incident I had missed.
Glad to see I was wrong. Hopefully waiting for the 18th.
Justin is an awesome Daddy.
"I'll chew your toes off, you stay away, I swear your toes are mine."

I cant begin to tell u what pleasure u give me watching your animals. I love when u "release the quackens" and their little feet hit the board coming down. So delightful and funny! Thanks so much for bringing going that into my life. Would love to have some but health dictates. Please keep up yr video's as it always brings on laughter and a smile. Luv to u and Allison & Toby.
Thank you! It’s so nice to hear that.
I will tell you what my geese did here. First I had a lot of geese and they had families. A gander would get about five geese and fight to keep them from other ganders who wanted them. They would all travel together in a big mass but, have a respected distance between other families, to the place desired. They kept the fields well tended and used the natural pond for water and bathing. I loved watching them in their habits and actions. Yes, the females would sometimes share nesting areas, or the small shelters that I had for them to use. The gander would stand guard over them and keep everything on an even keel. The gander is a very important factor to a goose's ability to remain on the nest and hatch out a clutch of eggs. I would NEVER try to keep the gander away from the 'nursery' area or lock him out. For two ganders to work together in a single family is odd to me, but, I have seen two brothers that stayed together during the breeding season, they were quite happy in that way, I don't know if both were intimate or not, that would be interesting to observe in a flock. They were both very protective of the family and anything that got to near those little goslings got 'ole hail Columbia' on them!! I did feed them layer pellets when the females were laying and also grower crumbles to the goslings as they were growing, ensuring that they got the proper amount of vitamins and minerals. If you have pigs be sure to put up a small spaced wire around their sty. A pig can clean you out of little chicks, goslings or ducklings in a flash, leaving nothing to incriminate them behind. Those little ones can get through the littlest places ever. I'm sorry about typing so much but, when I got going I just lost myself in the early days of my life talking about things that I love to talk a bout. Good luck and My God Bless you and your farm.
You know to be fair to Justin you’re not really on his team, I mean he specifically saw you take away 75% of his flock.
Not saying it’s immoral but I think Justin has a fairly informed opinion.
Justin has PTSD
Did he slaughter the 75% of the flock? Because I don’t see why he keeps geese in the first place?
@@antsatlas4855 he mainly keeps them for meat
Justin is a conspiracy theorist
Very cool seeing you let things happen naturally. Love seeing that goose family work together.
"Let's raise goslings naturally! It's nature's beautiful process!" Later: (15:20), the baby stands in a circle while all the adults hiss at her.
ObeyBunny i was so scared for the little baby 😫
Morgan, this was such a joy to watch! Thank you for sharing your journey with us!
I am so glad the geese managed to hatch some eggs themselves with your supervision.
I kind of envy the future subscribers of your channel who will be able to see all of that unfold in a great binge-watch without waiting impatiently like me. You really make those videos worthwhile, Morgan.
I love your videos mate, I'm often stuck in bed sick but your content always cheers me up. You're awesome dude, hope you and the missus are staying safe during this strange period. 👍😊
Thanks, you too!
Baby birds are so dang cute.
Two things. One, I always notice that one male goose likes to try to bite you when you're letting them out, and he always makes sure to turn around and hiss at you too when he's out the door. 😂 I just realized his name is Justin, so thanks for that. Also, I'm always nervous around geese because, well, geese can be shady. You're braver than I am! The second thing is I've never seen two females sit on the same nest before (wild or farm geese). That was super cool!! Thanks for another great video.
Angela Marie the second white goose is actually a female of a different breed. That was a whoopsie at harvest time.

Hey Morgan, recently started watching your channel about 2 weeks ago. (starting with toby's first video)
I love how much personality and heart your videos have. They're wholesome beyond measure and also well structured and edited, with plenty of lovely shots of the farm. I hope you keep posting as frequently as you do and have lots of fun doing so.
Thanks! I really love making videos.
I second everything he said !

Justin-ooh so you have choisin death.
Haha Justin antics are funny. As a young child staying at my great grandparents farm you learned at an early age the value of a good stick walking through the barn yard. One time a small flock of geese had my sister and I trapped in a corn crib until my great grandmother rescued us. It was scary at the time. I still remember vividly. Funny now though. Great video Morgan.
Revisiting older Goldshaw videos as a reference, while I try to patiently wait for my goslings to finish breaking free! First pip 5 minutes ago!
"They sit on the nest together, I don't know if that's a good thing or not."
Me neither, but it's freakin adorable! 😍
19:43 On the other hand, I think most humans don't realize that they're animals too. In my opinion, feelings and emotions are primal things that we likely have in common with lots of other species. People are just fancy apes. Stellar episode btw.
Thank you!
Yes, this is a good point. Even though they do not possess a language (or not one we can understand), we can recognise common emotions in other animals because many if not all of those emotions evolved long ago -- from a time prior to divergence when we shared a common ancestry with these other animals. Emotions (at least in vertebrates) are the internal motivator that drives external behaviour, so all animals have them, and the more closely-related two species are, the easier it is for them to "read" each other's emotions (in general). Geese and humans are pretty far apart in terms of evolution, but it's still possible. I think it's even possible to read some of the emotional states of _fish,_ so dinosaurs should be no problem! ;-) On the other hand -- creatures like crustaceans (lobsters, etc.) and cephalopods (octopuses, squid, cuttlefish, etc.) clearly possess intelligence of some sort, but they diverged from our own lineage so long ago that they are essentially like an alien species. At the time their lineages diverged from our own, _none_ of those ancestors had more than a rudimentary brainstem (at best), so most of what we consider thoughts and emotions evolved later in time. Therefore, it would be hubris to think we can even _begin_ to understand the emotional states of cephalopods and what they are thinking.
@@andreafalconiero9089 Yep. Anthropomorphism gets a bad rap. I've been observing my flock for long enough to call it at least half anthropology.
To desacralize is to remove sacred status. This is why names like savages or terrorists label enemies during wars.
Because we eat animals we desacrify them to insulate our minds from our actions. To borrow a quote, "We can't handle the truth".

Good evening Morgan, there I probably should say good morning to do three hours I'm typing this to you!
First I want to say how amazingly trusting your kids are of you. Even though they had sent you and do normal stretching out of their necks and a little flapping of their wings, that is mild compared to what Geese MIGHT Due to you during Mating or HATCHING time... especially if they're sitting on the eggs and hatching them themselves… What a little Goslings begin to peep out each day or so. They'll take your hands and fingers off if you want to touch or just peek. And the older they get the tougher/meaner they can be. They are EXCELLENT MO those are
Cont'd...Sorry neuropathy fingers again it was not done.…
I was seeing those Mommy GEESE are EXCELLENT, WONDERFUL GEESE ARE!!♥️♥️❣️❣️🌈
I also want to just say what an amazing caretaker you are of your Mommy's- to-be and mommies on the their babies are Mommy's, Once their Babies are Born!!! I just know other farmers and I won't name specifics but they didn't necessarily check on their expectant mothers quite as often as you do and as a result, they lost lambs and chicks and geese because too much time especially in cold weather went by. My father was like you and I'm so glad yeah you're a man of integrity for your animals but also you are so loving and you talk to them and you give them cute names you and Allison... it's like being in a story book with you two😊😊🌈💕❣️❣️😀🤼♂️💕🙏🙏Honestly my heart swells with joy every time I open up one of your videos because of the outpouring of happiness and joy and love the emotes from your videos. I just thank you and even if this isn't a new video, I still feel it and thank you again from the bottom of my heart for being farmers of integrity and kindness and love and joy for all of your animals not just TOBY, but ALL of your animals❣️❣️♥️♥️😊😊🥰
Not gonna lie I have been laughing for like 5 minutes straight at Justin. What an angry little honker. 😂😂
im addicted to your videos
Justin reminds me of a sarcastic video about geese that I saw that started off by saying “did you know that every goose hates you at a personal level?” Lol...keep on doin Morgan, always like your videos
Awe I am so glad you left them together! I have a family of 6 German Shepherds and they are so bonded and have their own way of communicating. When Mom had a litter of puppy the older sisters and dad couldn't wait to meet the babies. Mom leaves them meet at 3 wks old .It is just UNBELIEVABLE how the older dogs love the babies! The are a family pack like your geese are a family flock .
whoever edits your videos does a good job
I can't believe you got a message from Kirsten!! I have her book. It's one of the few fantastic books on geese!
So infuriating but amusing to watch you and your angst... 😅😅😅. I'm sitting here saying: "Leave them alone, for heaven's sake Morgan, leave them alone!" 😂😂😂
You have nothing to worry about with geese as parents... the whole gaggle will take incredible care of the young... as you saw. So relax in future, don't meddle, don't split them, they are far better at the job than you or any incubator can ever hope to be. 🤭
Not sure if you've heard that wise goosely saying yet: "It take a gaggle to raise a gosling".
Good luck my friend! 👍
I loved watching this video and agree with all of your decisions. That crazy Justin is doing a great job, he is so funny trying to get your boot everyday, he never gets anywhere, but you can see how he is so determined.
I have one FAT, American Buff goose scale up a 6 foot tall net fence just from levitating from propelling her wings and running up the fence! That could be a way they got back there. My husband said he saw her hover 4-6 feet up in the air with her giant (I call) "airplane" wings and I hardly believed him until I saw her do it! Amazing birds they are. Even for being so intimidating, I am so fascinated by them. Glad to hear you're making a decent market off the goslings. I've found selling extra hatchlings has been a pretty fast and sustainable business for me. Gets me enough funds for food and upgrades,
The male geese are quite amazing really, how they are so brave to protect their family. God bless!
Ohhh I love these videos I think it’s so amazing that we can help bring life into the world

To observe your eccentric, yet obviously deep love for your animals, it's refreshing. So often I see ranchers treat their animals like slavws, doing the bare minimum. You go so above and beyond, and for that I thank you. God bless you sir.
Thank you so much for the video! I love watching your geese and I miss mine.
Another great video, very creative and well produced. Guest goose analyst was a nice touch!
You did great work with them goose. they love you ,and you love them. Great Experience
I'm extremely happy that you decided to "let nature do it's thing". It's in human nature to desire control, it takes a great deal of self control to just allow the geese to do their thing and I appreciate your dedication to your craft.

What you do looks so fun! Taking care of animals! Love it!:)
I KNEW IT!! The moment you said “I have a surprise you can’t know about” last month in your videos, I knew you were hatching goslings.
Sorry to make you wait!
Gold Shaw Farm It’s worth it!
Seems like the white goose is a natural as parent, she was so cute looking after the baby ... cute babies, glad it worked out :D
Great video! I raised Toulouse geese and they were not as aggressive as the Pilgrims. Mine would sit on about 8 eggs, but they don't see well and can step on their babies. So I gave up with that and hatched them in a Sears redwood 400 egg- deep tray incubator. 98% hatch rate. Then I gave the babies back to the parents and they took over nicely. I would love to have geese again, but my husband doesn't care for them. They are so smart and wonderful parents. If the female dies, the male will raise the offspring and my dozens of parents would round up and baby sit the flock....
Your beautiful geeses remind me some memories of my childhood thank you
That was a very very good video we learned a lot from you my dear and you did a good job and so did mama geese

Justin is very protective of his girls. Good fellow to have around. Anxious to see how many hatched and to get to see them as they grow and learn their way around the farm. You have convinced me to get some geese for Dragon Hill Farm. Chickens, ducks and cats aren't enough!

This is the second time i saw justin's neck being choked and that's to me, seems so funny!
Awww, such precious little peeps! Justin is being a good goose! As much of a pain as that can be.
TY Morgan! Yep! It would seem these geese have made a tight-knit flock. Good on you to let them do their thing! It's tempting to take a peek, but best to leave them be. Check on them, but as long as they're defending the nest, the moms sitting on them, best to let them do their thing. Kinda like when a human has a baby.
A beautiful thing! You'll have to update us on how the little ones are doing!
The pond's looking a lot better. 🦆
