Just want to mention a cute little detail that's very easy to miss, at the end when Hiccup steals the black sheep just as Astrid is about to catch it, he actually slam dunks it into HER net instead of his, giving her the win! The entire show is packed with nice little details like that, ranging from practical (Hiccup putting rocks on his map at the beginning so it doesn't blow away) to pure world building (Hiccup's chin scar is visible at several different points in the first movie, even though it was never mentioned until the second!) Truly a masterclass trilogy
Who needs a Dragon Race win if you win your Crushs heart
Also that at several points it's mentioned that Hiccup parallels his dad in personality but they show Astrid wing walking at the beginning of the second movie to parallel his mother
Also, you can see in the first movie as well as the rest, that Toothless has a smilar scar but on his neck. Making him and Hiccup more connected
Just like the first movie, this one just does so many things right. Hiccup and Astrid's relationship is adorable, Valka is a great character and addition to the cast, Drago is such an unstoppable force of a villain, Eret's redemption feels earned, Stoick's death was extremely emotional and impactful, (it still makes me cry,) the climax is just plain perfect, and as always, the animation and musical score are fantastic. A pretty damn great movie and an amazing sequel.

Man stoick was the best character in this movie. His death and his quote "you're as beautiful as the day I lost you" makes me teary-eyed
According to the Television series Drago found the alfa as a baby and raised it. That is why he can control it through fear.
Since you asked about how Drago can control his alpha, his weapon implies the answer. It’s a bull hook or elephant goad. In the past they would use them to hit young elephants so that when the elephants grew up they would obey people that led them with the hook out of fear, even though they could easily overpower them. That’s how ancient people trained war elephants going back more than 2000 years and some circuses and zoos also used similar methods to train their elephants even though most consider it to be abuse. Considering the bewilderbeasts have large tusks and that Drago controls it by screaming and swinging his bull hook, the reference is very clear and it fits well with Dragos whole thing of controlling dragons through fear
Hiccup uses friendship and trust
Draggo uses fear and intimidation
Grimmel uses explotation when necessary
56:02 Something I find interesting about this moment is that, there was a similar moment in the first movie at the end of the battle against the Red Death (aka the big queen dragon) and getting hit by the tail was how Hiccip ended up almost dying and losing his leg. But now they are older, faster and able to make tigher turns and they both get out unscathed.
A nice little growth moment.
There's so much of this franchise. Short movies: Legend of the Boneknapper Dragon, Book of Dragons, Gift of a Night Fury, Dawn of Dragon Racers and How to Train Your Dragon: Homecoming (Homecoming takes place after the third movie all the previous ones before the second movie).
And there are series as well, starting with Riders of Berk, then a second season for that is called Defenders of Berk, both take place after the first movie. And then we have Race to the Edge, one of the best things to have happened with the dragons franchise. It takes place 3 years after the first movie, so before the second movie and it's amazing! It makes you fall in love with the characters and the world they live in so much more.
I highly HIGHLY recommend checking out this franchise to the fullest.

Honestly I loved the second movie more then the first one, and just because it had a lot more emotions, Stoick’s death especially with Hiccup’s speech. Had me tearing up

The way that the wild Dragons fight is something impressive to me (example: the two headed dragons "the twins use one" turn into flaming rolls 42:35)
All the dragons, exploring new islands and the evolution of berk is explained in the tv show 😁
I loved watching the shows because it teaches you about every dragon and there capabilities
For me this film is something very special. The only one I saw in the cinema.
But what makes this film even greater is that an ENTIRE series takes place between the first and this film, where we learn so much about all the dragons and secrets.. And then seeing Hiccup's face in this film.. With the knowledge in At the back of his mind is what he has seen and who he has already met. Simply great.. My personal favorite of the series, Viggo, even indirectly warned Hiccup about the consequences of his good heart.. That at some point it prevents him from seriously recognizing danger.
I loved that franchise and I still love it! Especially the second movie gets me everytime. But the series is also very awesome.. How many different dragons there are and just exploring this world.. Riders of Berg Truly amazing. Still love the conclusion of everything.

its not that you have to watch the show to understand or something, its more like the show does a great job filling in the gaps and will probably leave you feeling more satisfied. but no, not watching the show will in no way harm your experience.
stoick was a such a great character like it killed me to see him die in that movie, httyd 2 will always be my No. 1
Fun fact: the alphas were actually mother & son. Valka raised that younger one while the older one was kidnapped by Drago.
That's not the case, we see that Valka raised the white one from Race to the Edge but as some other people have noted, Drago controls his bewilderbeast through fear from when it was young so the two should be close to the same age. The large sea dragons have very long lifespans even though they apparently mature very quickly based on the gap from RttE to the second movie. I can't remember if the one we see in RttE is physically similar to Drago's but there doesn't seem to be much difference in physical characteristics in the two in this movie.

As much as the show expands the lore of the series, I think the magic was in the OG trilogy of the movies!!!

Sad fact about Drago’s weapon: it’s known as a Bullhook. It’s a weapon used to traditionally “train” Elephants. Essentially the person would beat on the elephant and pull on its tusks with this weapon as a baby & as it grows so when it’s an adult, it’s too scared to fight back due to trauma. So it’s heavily implied this is what drago did to this bewilderbeast. Raising it from when it hatched and beating it to submission.
The How To Train your dragons series show the evolution of all the characters so It might be worth watching.

Fun fact: hiccup saved valkas bewilderbeast when it was still an egg in the final episodes of dragons: race to the edge. But, to make sense of everything, you need to start with dragons: riders of Berk. Then dragons:defenders of Berk. Then dragons race to the edge.

8:44 this is the first time someone pointed this out and it’s adorable. Hiccup and Astrid honestly have one of the best relationships in fiction (the third show shows this off in more detail).
You don’t quote on quote “have” to watch the show in order to understand the movies it just helps answer questions you might have as well as fill in the holes for the *hicstrid* relationship
It would also patch some holes with the “dragon trappers” because we see a good fair of those in the show
We also get an introduction of Drago at the end of the show so we get what would’ve happened to Eret
YES PLEASE REACT TO THE SHOW, the show just adds so much of things and the show is funny as hell if you liked the movies the show is a must watch and just to be sure we are talking about race to the edge right? because there is another show that plays earlier it like plays directly after the first movie and race to the edge is like right before the second movie. For a little idea of what the show gives you see hiccups first trys with the wingsuit.

For Race to the Edge fans, remember in Triple Cross when Viggo said to Hiccup "Hiccup, you have many admirable qualities, but ruthlessness is not one of them. You are too good, too pure, too innocent, which will get you or someone you love killed.". Fast forward to movie two, and Hiccup's lack of ruthlessness, - wanting to change Drago's mind when both his mother and father told him it wasn't possible (not to mention that he committed MASS REGICIDE.) - got his father killed. If he had just killed Drago, Stoick would still be alive. Foreshadowing? I think yes.

Then raised it from an egg to what it is now. Using fear and abuse. Notice the bull hook he uses. Likely he beat the alpha when it was younger. Basically beating into it, that the hook means pain.
So even when it’s massive. Him simply screaming and waving the hook is enough to remind it off the abuse and fear.
He also seemed to have beaten the more parental and kind instincts of the typical bewilderbeast. Forcing it to rule through fear like a tyrant than a king.

Actually, in therms of timeline, the shows happen before HTTYD 2 (Riders of Berk, Defenders of Berk and Race to the Edge), but it would be amazing if you guys reacted to the shows, specially Race To The Edge! PLEASE watch the show it's so good but no one ever reacts to it. usually the cartoons for the movies are dumbed down and repetitive but the show adds so much lore and they actually keep most of it in the movie.

The old alpha is not bad, he is just very frightened. The story behind Drago's Bewilderbeast is that Drago captured him as a baby and abused him, bringing attention to the fact that the bewilderbeast could easily kill Drago he does not because he fears him and why Drago's weapon of choice is a bullhook. It is common used tool in the abuse of elephants and why the animation designers in the movie based the bewilderbeast's looks and size after elephants to bring light to the issue.
