Building a Step Down On A Trail We Haven't Named Yet

  • Today we're moving back into the woods for a few quick projects. We're working a trail we still haven't named yet, but have been riding it a lot last fall and even used it in the winter for XC skiing. All in all, it works pretty well however there's a few parts that could use some love and that's what we're going to tackle.

    A bit more context.
    We started building this trail last year. It runs off of the top of Far side. You can reference that map here at the 34 second mark of this video ➡ ua-cam.com/video/_RXS4xZYb8k/v-deo.html.
    Also, if you go back to the video where we were wood chipping stuff, most of that was happening in this area. I actually referenced that trail that we're working on at the 37 second mark ➡ ua-cam.com/video/t4824dWKOJg/v-deo.html
    Most of this trail is used in the Summer and Winter months as this is what we use for XC skiing and snowshoeing in the winter for fitness.

    I agree on the hand built vs machine built. I use a mini excavator building my trails, but mostly just to pile up dirt or fill a wheelbarrow. Then shape it all by hand. My trail is absolutely ripping at the moment. Come ride if you visit Australia

      Tripod just rolls off the tongue easier. My Normal "tripod" is actually a monopod, but monopod sounds dumb even though its technically correct.

    Phil you and Seth have an uncanny sense of making trails. His more park like, your handbuilt in nature. I like how you like to encorporate the trail and the feature to what's already there naturally. Definitely more of a North Shore vibe, which I love more so then the bike park feel.

    • @PhilsWorld
      @PhilsWorld  2 роки тому +3

      I can only speak for this one but theres not much I can't do with it. For most stuff around here it's plenty. The fact that it's so easy to just to grab and use makes it worth it. But I'm not running my saw all day. The biggest drawback to these will be power density. One of these batteries is pretty heavy and I always bring a few batteries, but i can still run them dry. If you are hiking out too someplace remote, it's hard to beat the power density of gasoline.

    Great video of the trail build! I bought myself a battery assisted wheelbarrow last year. It a PAW Pro model … about $900. Really nice to use when u don’t have good soil where u need it. I think it is 6 cu ft. Not full on commercial quality but quod enough.

    Oddly enough, I was just googling if ash is a good source for building trail features this morning before watching this. I think it's our duty as stewards to use the wood for fun features now that it is all going to die and maybe fall on people. Safety first!
    If you haven't checked out Nik Rijavec's channel, there's some great building techniques on it. It's not geared toward MTB but there's some skills that translate.

    Love the trail building videos. I am curious how many acres of land you are working with. Also I also picked up one of those DeWalt saws and see you swapped the bar. Curious on which saw you have and what Oregon bar you threw on it. Trying to find a backup bar for my 60v and didn't know if you happened to have the same model.

    • @PhilsWorld
      @PhilsWorld  2 роки тому +2

      Yeah, sometimes you have to cut stumps flush with the ground or dirty wood, and the chain is bound to get dull. I try to avoid that, but getting the job done right is more important. If i have to sharpen the chain or replace it, that's just part of the process.
