My wife also doesn't mind Rob on the shared TV! A cool thing about your blog and channel Rob is a lot of Americans are (or rather, were) ignorant that the Seahawks have an international fanbase. So to people like my wife and me that makes you and other international Hawks fans SUPER fans because you a) made a choice to follow the NFL and b) picked the Seahawks as your team. Thanks for all your coverage and fandom. I know it gives me and others even more pride to be a Hawks fan.
Its always interesting to see the difference to the comments about the team from US fans and fans from the UK ..What is similar is how much we love the team I love my trips to PNW ,great people see you all next time , lets get winning again..
Grubb got fired the second he called 14 straight pass attempts when Howell went in for injured Geno. To not settle a backup QB into the game and to not use your RB who was running through the GB D, in his extremely limited attempts, is just downright criminal. Grubb is lucky he was able to finish the season and wasn't fired on the spot after that game.
Lmao there are so many 'fans' out there now in comment sections claiming that Grubb was simply just a scapegoat firing for the ineptness of their offense, and offensive line, placing no blame on him whatsoever. These people are egregiously delusional.
@chrisolson719 eh. It's a chicken and egg problem. Elite personnel covers up a lot of schematic issues. Most personnel are not elite. As such the job of the OC, the O-line coach, and the QB coach are to make the offense's job easier when their personnel are limited
I did not follow you when you were pounding the table for Michael Crabtree but that's who I wanted to see the Seahawks draft I was very disappointed when they drafted the linebacker. I didn't realize you'd been doing this for that long Rob. Appreciate your efforts as always
Great shout on Gruden!! I was thinking Gruden last week as Schneider and him served at Green Bay together and he is the sort of guy you can let manage the offence without needing hand holding and the experience he has.
Eh…he’s the kind that you have to watch from a PR point. Completely wrong personality for Macdonald. Look at someone running the offense, not a connection to Schneider.
@@bretkester8316 I don't think Schneider wants the hassle or is willing to run the risk. He cares so much about harmony and positive energy in the building. Gruden's emails denigrate African Americans. I believe we have some guys from that demographic on the offense.
I love the Gruden idea!! Macdonald isn't great with the press and Chuckie would be able to alleviate some of the pressure there. Although if I was Mike I'd be concerned that if things go wrong my replacement is already in the building.
All DK needed was 8 more yards to get to 1k yards for the season, and he missed multiple games while dealing with injuries coming back. Grubb couldn’t even do that for him, look at the Bucs did for Evans.
Off season just got more exciting, going to be interesting when you start doing the mock drafts if we don't know who the OC is going to be yet. We have tendencies to learn, schematics, profiles, really exciting again imo. I do want to say though, I had hoped that Grubb would have worked out. He did bring some very good concepts to the game, I particularly enjoyed the tunnel screens and using our WR's over the middle. It was pretty obvious by the end of the first quarter though that this was a mismatch, this is the type of OC John would hire not Mike. I am pretty sure John told Mike he would find him a good one, don't worry about it.
We need to be a nasty running team draft scattabo and use that to be explosive with our receivers tightens ect, use a fn fullback that's our identity 👌 go hawks 💙
This was an obvious need half way through this season as I posted quite a few times since. Glad they cut their losses early instead of doubling down on them like they did with Waldron. This shows JS is willing to operate differently than with Pete. Maybe this is a ray of sunlight shining on a new process moving forward---one that isn't willing to play the hopium game and instead one that keeps the tip of the spear sharp by playing the best probabilities and adjusting quickly when the odds shift. This is good news. I hope Grubb finds a fit that maximizes his potential. Staying with Seahawks into next year is certainly not that . . . . .
I'm sure that any former Head coach as an OC candidate will require that JS changes his O-line habits of the past 10 years. This could be a limiting factor in finding someone who will take the job since it's not likely JS will make such a major change in his habits. The obvious problem with Jake Peetz is that he will fall into the "hot young thing" OC type. Problem with this is that he will not offer continuity to build a consistent contender. The constant roulette of the "hot young thing" coming and then going when they get hired away is a major problem in fielding a "dynasty-type" team. It creates the boom-bust-mediocre cycle. They really need to get a former HC who is an above-average OC. This is a model that will allow year after year of continuity since the former HC OC type is not often rehired to be a HC again.
Rob, about your comment on the type of O-linemen you'd like Schneider to acquire: for God's sake Schneider & scouting personnel need to overhaul how they evaluate linemen bc we need linemen WITH GREAT FEET. You block with your feet! Too many of our current Olinemen are completely disconnected from their lower halves. That's why they rarely ever recover leverage whenever they get beat in the slightest off the LOS!! Stop bargain basement shopping for D-2 one game wonders and GO OUT AND EVALUATE A MAULER WITH SOME GD FEET!
Personnel covers up schematic problems. Scheme and play-calling covers up a lot of personnel problems. If you listen to Mark Schlereth much, one of the things he says runs along this line: the teams that are able to draft and develop offensive linemen (because they're ALL bad for the most part coming out of college) have supremely competent OC and o-line coaches. Everyone else has to overpay and go for experienced, proven guys. There are teams that do both, but no successful teams that do neither.
oh my god Gruden would be hilarious. he would need to be on a short leash though. I have a hard time imagining Macdonald would want to go with someone so polarizing/such a big personality. I think Gruden, probably not purposefully, would try to take over that locker room. his personality is just so strong I have a hard time seeing him being an OC under such a young coach.
I think a good comparison for the Hawks this year is the Vikings. I think they are the team the seahawks could have been. Making the most of a bottom half O-line and a middle of the road QB.
The "OC's with HC experience help win super bowls" correlation doesn't seem too impressive. This is obvious to say but don't we think they got HC jobs in the first place because they were good coordinators?
Seahawks 4th OC in 6 years. I guess they were all bad. Or is it that John Schneider doesn't care about the offensive line? I'm among those who think Grubb was the latest scapegoat for Schneider's ineptness or refusal to fix the OL.
@@robstatonfootball But the O-line has needed fixing for about a decade; that's on Schneider. Grubb is just the latest Seahawks OC to get fired over it. You can't keep hiring and firing OCs without fixing the underlying problem.
Not sure I can see Gruden in Seattle - just don't think it flies and while it is true the fans don't make the decision they can certainly voice a lot of disapproval
Do we have crap scouts or something? I understand out o-line sucks, but it’s not like they haven’t tried to draft players for the oline. So it leads me to the conclusion that we suck at scouting
Mark Schlereth talks about this a lot. Offensive linemen coming out of college are almost ENTIRELY unprepared for life in the NFL. The teams that successfully draft and develop o-line have WELL above average offensive coordinators (make line play as easy as possible), and extremely competent o-line coaches (make existing talent better each week through a season). Pretty much everyone else has to overpay for experienced talent that have been developed by other coaches
@ that explains a lot. But also says that the organization hasn’t been able to hit on the coaches either. We know JS won’t overpay, so hopefully coach and JS can find the coaches that will finally level up this oline.
Harbaugh Offense is not an impressive scheme---too limited IMO and is likely not the model to follow to be on the cutting edge of creativity looking forward.
I like the idea of Jake Peetz, the only problem is that Jake Peetz has zero play calling experience in the NFL. I better like the idea of a seasoned NFL OC, but not sure what options left meet that criteria, as well as McDonald's vision, are available. Might just be another tough situation for the Seahawks again this offseason. I would be completely shocked if Gruden ever works in the NFL again.
One thing to note -- McVay, O'Connell and Coen didn't have play-calling experience when hired. Neither did LaFleur before going to Tennessee. All succeeded
No way in hell that Jon Gruden comes to Seattle after the stuff he said. This isn't Texas or Florida where they put up with racism and homophobia. Surprised it happened so fast… obviously in the works before the last few days. Seems like a good guy. Wish Ryan all the best.
