Pro writer here. I *love* writing, but sometimes it sucks, even when I'm writing on a personal project. I also paint minis, and the same things apply. The point of a hobby is to find *happiness.* If your hobby's making you sad, you should absolutely pause and re-think. The world's been a really rough place the last few years. Even those of us who're lucky or are handling it well can struggle, let alone the folks who're bearing the brunt of the crummy things. I'm really glad Lyla did this, and I'm also glad for this video. It's *good* to tell people you're stuck. Also, *hugs* to anyone out there who's up against it right now.

    • @RonelynValor
      @RonelynValor 4 місяці тому +2

Also, as far as quality of work goes, we're *all* much better at judging the quality of work than we are of creating work at our top quality. It's actually *good* to listen to Grandpa when he says your work's amazing because he's *right*--you're probably way better than you think. Even when you're competing professionally, it helps to remember how far you've come instead of just beating on yourself for the skills you're still honing.

Hey there Lyla. Feb 22, 7:20pm the emt’s told me that my wife never regained her heart beat or breathing. That’s was after my worst 10 minutes of my life performing cpr until they got there, the next 20 minutes was brutal. I’m staring at my M-60 tank diorama that I haven’t touched since then. I so get where your head and your heart is right now. I’d say “ trust me , I know what you are going through” but it’s sounds trite, just know there more of us right where you are then you know.

Most of the time I sit down at my hobby table, my cats are more like an invading force than 'wholesome'. Although they are wholesome in general for sure, this can be quite annoying. It's not fun when you have to constantly start anew, because there are cat hairs all over your miniatures.
And when it comes to soldering, I simply have to lock my cats out, since it's simply too dangerous having them snooping around your workspace when you have a 300°C soldering iron in your hands.

@@RijadsI missed the Cadian War Pug (don't ask) I have on my shelf for weeks. Until I've caught one of my cats pulling him out from under a couch in a completely different room and starting to drag him around like a dead mouse. They love to do the same thing with my nephew's toy tanks and that is fine, but with my Cadian War Pug, lines were crossed.

I have every respect for someone who can admit to being human and needing to accept that not every day will be like the opening sequence to The Sound of Music. People often ignore their mental requirements, especially during times of personal stress, and with the online presence always in mind many people put on a hollow brave face. It is OK to not be OK. You've looked after us, coming up with new content, often many weeks before others copy whatever you have covered, and you are happy to be asking meaningful questions, examining motivations and keeping us going in those videos, but it's OK to take time to look after yourself for a bit. Take care.

I often take extended breaks from all my hobbies, which are pretty varied. I think taking a break is important to avoid getting bored or having burnout, and I think this overall conversation is important to have. I have a bunch of WIPs that I started when I was extremely inspired, and I'm ok with finishing them later. Learning to be okay with that took a while, but its also helped be stop feeling hopeless when I end up feeling burnout, since I know if I take a break Ill come back with a better headspace.

You’re the second UA-cam presenter who’s expressed this sentiment lately. I never really thought about how different hobby is when it’s your vocation as well as your passion. I paint to sort of escape from the realities of the day-to-day. I can paint, what I want, how I want, when I want, if I want. That wouldn’t be the case if hobby was my job.
I just hope this all works out for you for two reasons... selfishly, I just enjoy your work and would miss the content. Less selfishly, you seem like a great person and deserve to find the most joy and fulfillment possible in your life.

  • @mathiasm3654
    @mathiasm3654 4 місяці тому +8

Fully understandable. The shiny nice social media world can lead one to believe that all creative people out there just enjoy their lives every minute and so on. Of course, this is not the reality.
I'm happy to see a trend about people not only sharing the happy funny moments but also their troubles and struggles. Going out with these emotions requires braveness, but may bring you closer to others and makes you more real as a person for your viewers. Let's face it: happy and unhappy moments are part of all or our lives. How could we cherish the greatest and happiest moments without having ever felt troubles and sad times?
    Thank you for sharing.

You are one of the creators I always come back to, and it's because of videos like this. I really appreciate how open and honest you are about your own learning, feelings, and experiences. The video "retracting" your initial tips on drybrushing is a perfect example of this. It takes an emotionally mature person to be able to admit their own mistakes (even if it was one that was taught to you!), but you didn't stop there, you publicly addressed it and did the research in order to create a new guide that was more accurate. I've had a couple of losses in the last year as well, one being unexpected, and some days things are just hard. My heart goes out to you, and can't wait to see what you'll come up with next, however long that takes.

I lost my sister in September and I can 100% relate to this. Managing your mental health is very important, and when you're a YT, it's even more important. Take care of yourself cause no one else can do it for you. The community says they'll love and support you which is good, but you can't rely on a bunch of strangers (no offence meant) to help you. Take breaks, feel better, then when you go back to it, hopefully you do it with renewed vigor and enthusiasm.

Turning your hobby into a job is hard. Keeping that passion going is hard. I used to love cooking on campfires, and I attended live action roleplay or larp events. People need to eat, and larp, like minature gaming is is expensive... so in 3 years I build a client list that had me cooking 3 square meals a day 26 weekends a year outside, come rain, snow or sunshine... I made a living, but it was hard work. When eventually I had some life events go bad I burned out badly, both mentally and physically (this was just before the pandemic) Its only now, 4 years later that I'm cooking again, for just 20 people, but its the first time im cooking 1 meal on an event again. And I'm actually having fun putting it all together again.
I'm so glad content creators like you are putting out videos like this. It helps me recover knowing I'm not the only one.

Hey, I just wanted to say I watch a lot of youtube miniature painters.
I watch people like Sorastro's and it inspires me, but as far as I am concerned he is a wizard who uses magic to achieve what he does and I will never get to that point.
Of alll the youtube miniature painters I watch you are the one who helped me up my game the most BY FAR. I love watching your videos because I feel like I learned something.
I just finished an Ultron for marvel crisis protocol. I am not brave enough to do NMMs on expensive miniatures so I went with metallic paint and I thought it looks awful. Then I used your trick of a periwinkle\tyrian blue glaze and it looks so, so much better. Thank you for that!
I hope you feel better. You are a wonderful teacher and from the small glimpses you show us a beautiful person.

This needed to be said. It's understandable and everyone I know has gone through it either in this hobby or any other.
I'm happy to watch this video and know that many other people needed to feel they were not alone.

I would love to see pro painters start giving times on each project. Like “love this look, it took 52 hours on just this 1 mini”. I think it gives perspective and a realistic expectations for novice painters. Great honest video

Thanks for sharing! I've been dealing with burnout myself. Understanding that a change in routine usually helps me, sometimes it's tough to kick that change into gear and take the actions you actually know you need to do. Sharing like this helps hearing that others have the same challenges and together with shared experiences we can help each out rise up out of the malaise.

So sorry for your losses. I have dealing with health issues and family issues and losses for the past 2 1/2 Years, and am after an incident almost causing the loss of my left hand and taking the better part fo a year to regain usage (not full mind you) I can relate. Sometimes knowing one is not alone in dealing with such matters, can be already helpful. So thank you for putting yourself out there.

This feels so good to hear. I love painting but it's hard and a lot of the time I find I'm not even enjoying it. It always seems so much easier for painters on social media and that can leave me feeling worse about my complicated feelings.

Thank you for your openness and transparency. I'm at the other end of the spectrum, just getting into the hobby again after a 50-year hiatus with dioramas. Right now I have that "boundless energy" of the newness of everything - new paints, techniques, etc. It's good to know in my quest for my own personal perfectionism that sometimes it's okay to be less than perfect, lol. And when I go through the usual ebb and flow of commitment, I won't freak out and just move through the process. I appreciate you and do what's best for you.✌🏼

As a person with mental health afflictions I can totally appreciate this. In October (after the second final straw) I decided I was going to become a model railway maker. I’ve never made anything remotely like a railway, I haven’t made dioramas etc. in December I decided that I was becoming interested in D&D (yes the film got me). These are hobbies which may sound worlds apart actually aren’t that different. So it’s a good combination financially and mentally.
Now I can become hyper focused. Which is why I chose them. I know nothing about them, so I have to research. I am/was/am a designer and a pro diyer so building etc is the easy part. The what paints, type of paints, brands, washes, way to make washes, grime, rust, dust, snow, frost HELP!!
Sometimes, it’s overwhelming. So. I make myself stop before the grr sets in and leave it. I’ll play a game with my woof or on the mobile or the console
( back to D&D a mo @ - I have social anxiety, going out is a no, you mentioned Baldurs Gate. I have had it (Baldurs Gate 3 - which is what it looks like you were playing) in my PS basket for a fortnight, is it worth the purchase? It looks it, but I play FF, all Ubisoft titles including RR so I’m expecting epic graphics! Would I be disappointed or is it truly like the video and is it fun to play? Especially since FF7 remake has hit us now!)
We have to know when to take a break, I don’t always I admit it freely. When I don’t especially when I’m super tired and trying to work out something, I will either cock up what I’m doing (like breaking a surface point motor just when I needed it to test out my first official modded piece - I was told it wasn’t possible - I took that as a challenge (model rail is super male dominated & I appear to be the only IronMan (fe-male) on the biggest manufacturer forum - but I was tired and broke the smallest & most vital component) Finally, getting the point, I walked away!
Few hours later, I used ingenuity & fixed it. Proudly exclaiming to myself, ingenuity in these moments is a big part of modelling.
I also tend to talk a lot when making a point.
    Which is.
It’s okay. It is completely and utterly fine to be burnt out. When it happens, go and do something else, completely unrelated. Or do nothing. Take time and do nothing (don’t ruminate!) potter about, look at the sky, watch the world go by.
Leave whatever it is until a spark hits you on how to accomplish whatever it be, or you suddenly feel inclined. If you make it a chore it will become a chore.
I’m lucky in a way. I become either hyper focused or bored very quickly. When bored I go to a different project until the boredom passes and I want to refocus.
On a final note. Take time to grieve. Seek professional help or look on their websites if you think you’re not coping with it ; we don’t always realise we aren’t & reading advice from pros can help. Do whatever it is that you are most comfortable with doing when it comes to healing.
I will be watching your videos because at some point I will be at that stage, I will need to populate my magical rail world (I am going to include fantasy figures on the top of the hill, for intrigue & to combine the two worlds) and I will be painting teeny folk & your videos so far that I’ve watched (when stressed at another aspect of life & needed a creative fix!) will be most helpful!
If anyone made it this far thanks for reading & if I’ve helped or at least entertained any one of you, then my work here is done.
    🫂 from Angel & Prince Niklaus / woof ✌🏻

Sorry to hear about your relatives. Burnout sucks and every little thing piles on and makes everything exponentially worse. Here's hoping you find peace soon. Im new to your channel and appreciate all your hard work. What matters is you properly grieve your loved ones and give yourself time to process it. I had something similar happen to me. Got out of the military after 10 years(huge change) my dad died a couple months later unexpectedly then my brother killed himself less than a year later. I had so much to cope with i just shut it out to keep moving. What i figured out years later is i never grieved properly and it took a huge toll on me.
You seem really nice and i hope you are nice to yourself and give yourself all the time you need to process those feelings. The models will still be there.
When you have a tough day just remember that tomorrow is a new day and you get another crack at it.

My eyesight has been declining over the past few years. I used to paint for competitions and I found myself struggling as even with coke bottle lenses it's getting hard to focus. I recently changed my goals from looking good at 3 inches to looking good at 3 feet and it has helped revive my enjoyment of the hobby. I am not going to win any competitions but I am getting stuff done and trying new ways of painting. My pile of shame is making some headway and I'm happier for it. My point I guess is that what was burning me out before was that I was going for the wrong goal. I did a bit of soul searching and revisited my priorities and I am happy once again. It's ok to change your goals to match the changes in yourself.

I never understood how people can exclusively dedicate themselves to one particular hobby. I always admired them for that skill, since I'm someone who has several interests and always rotates between them. After this video I don't feel bad about it any more, it will probably take 5 years to finish an army, but I at least I can say I always have fun while painting. I hope you'll get better soon ❤

Sorry to hear about the sorrow that you've been living through. I've recently lost my father. I often find myself frustrated in my hobby time since I only get short windows here and there to work on my miniatures, sometimes only an hour a week, sometimes only an hour every 3 weeks. You give great advice about stepping away and starting fresh. Hang in there, it will come back.😊

I completely understand. two years ago my mother passed away in hospital and it was a very hard blow, but I think that time heals wounds and this is the time you need. you need to rest and give yourself a break. You paint beautiful things and, in my opinion, you are a beautiful person. it is important to always find a balance between what we must and what we need.

I love all the work you do, and I would not want you to feel overwhelmed or get burned out. When I get to that point I pivot and paint something different like vehicle versus figure and so on. Inspiration to paint something does not have to be forced and I have been painting for over 45 years. I have tried out all sorts of mediums from oil painting to acrylic, and from miniatures to actual paintings. That is why it is a hobby, which I use to forget the stress of the day dealing with people, family, and life in general. Hang in there like your cats do not find inspiration let it find you.
