    I'm a Vallejo/Formula P3 sort, here, when it comes to painting. I learned with P3 and am familiar with its properties and find it's good for making glazes and washes with. Vallejo is just an excellent all around brand for opaque, washes, and glazes, I find as well. I finally took the plunge and grabbed a few Army Painter Speedpaint 2.0 bottles to mess with and I'll see what I think about them once I get them opened up and going. Though manufactured washes are very reliable and handy, you can also create your own washes with non-wash paints (except contrast) by diluting with water and adding medium if needed. Washes have a lot in common with glazes but have a lower viscosity so they spread more and get into those crevices nicely.

    With Speedpaints/Contrast paints you want Black Primer > Gray Zenithal > White Drybrush. If you lean into TMM it's a good time to basecoat your metallics and give them a wash. That's what worked for me. Add more highlights and edge highlights and you up to a great result in a tight timeframe and low skill level. But be aware that this painting method does NOT develop painting skills other than Dry Brush. Great for big armies done quickly.

    • @jasoncarpenter5974
      @jasoncarpenter5974 Рік тому

      See I prefer contrast, speed paint or instant colors over a very light grey or yellow primer with no sloppy chippy or zenithal. They make it look too dirty or grimy even for grim dark with little control over the final product.

    • @CPyJIb
      @CPyJIb Рік тому

      @@jasoncarpenter5974 Zenithal and Slop Chop makes your models dirty ? If by Grimy you mean patches and coffee stains, that's what Citadel Contrasts usually do. Try Army Painter Speedpaints, they don't have that effect and are especially good when you apply them on a slop chop base.

    • @maverickman6486
      @maverickman6486 Рік тому

      I have found the same thing. I'll do a grey basecoat, black line only the very darkest areas and drybrush very light grey and then apply a grey range speed paint. but I also am still experimenting with color priming or base coat with a lighter than normal base coat color and drybrushing with a very light color then finishing with speed paint. This gets rid of the too white high lights that speed paint look.

As such, I have to ask: why go through the trouble of using a contrast/speed paint first for the feathers, if you are later going to drybrush over it and then apply a wash? It seems like the contrast paint step is wasted. Wouldn't "base color + drybrush + wash" (AKA "the traditional method") yield pretty similar results?

      Using speedpaints will eventually lead to a plateau and require the combining of opaque paint and eventually glazing etc. Speedpaints are an aspect of miniature painting and a very useful tool for the toolbox. In the same way you can't just go point and shoot with a camera and become a great photographer. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

      I don't disagree. I was asking about a line being drawn to what is Art and what isn't. Everyone's interpretation of that will be different. It's all in the eye of the beholder. It's an incredibly deep discussion with no real answer, just personal opinion. That's what makes this such a good video, got us thinking about the definition of art in our niche hobby.

      @BlastercadedPainting I'm not a real "artsy" person per sé I think the attempt at creating a mood or conveying a feeling is just as admirable as a masterwork(in most cases). Miniature painting is unique to me as well in that we only enhance someone else's work but when executed to a high level you could have the best of the best paint the same miniature and you will get a different execution every time. In the mean time, I disagree with your commentary on Contrast paints. I am not saying you are wrong, (Well I am a little) but your method for use of Contrast is but one way. For example I painted an army of Death Guard using Contrast for the primary colouring. I didn't use zenithal painting, nor dry brush. Anyone who has seen Death Guard will tell you there is not a flat surface in sight but I had none of the pooling problems you describe. But then again I did not thin the paints either, primarily because I hate the effect of the white showing through, it looks like a bad water colour paint job. I do underpainting with shades of grey, which stops the cartoonish bright colour you spoke of and allows tonal changes in the Contrast paint itself. So you know, your presentation, one woman's opinion I think. By the way, even the front armour plate of a man's cuirass is still called a breast plate. It is not sexual.
