Believe it or not, the movement of dealing with that cord can set off an animal. At that point you have a strong excited dancing animal, a whirling or reciprocating blade, at least two laceration-prone animals and a cord. @@seanleith5312 in the wild they don’t have this problem as they wear their feet down naturally on rocks, sand, rough terrain etc. and their diet is sparse when in human care they are given regular food, and are kept in soft pastures so they don’t have the opportunity to wear naturally. With all of the nutrients humans give them they grow quickly and need regular trimming every 6-8 weeks I don’t know the status of this guy currently
@@seanleith5312 The response by @WindMule Acres is actually not complete, as wild horses and donkeys do actually sometimes suffer similar problems (not to this extent) when this happens in the wild however, those animals tend to die out due to natural selection
I have a love/hate relationship with seeing videos like this, with severely overgrown hooves. I hate seeing animals so neglected and in pain. There is no excuse a person can give me to allow such suffering to occur. But I love seeing the work going in to get the animal back into healthy condition. It's a weird satisfaction like " Yeah.....you take it off, take it aaaaaallllll off. Oooh, yeah! Give that donkey a fresh start to a healthy future!"

@@kekeh.5696 Hooves being overgrown to this extent doesn't happen overnight, or even over a few months. This is years of neglect. If you're "on your deathbed" long enough for this amount of growth to occur, I daresay you have time to arrange some sort of care for the animal.

The hoof gp uses a hand held grinder to trim the hoofs. I think a lot better and quicker method for trimming hoofs. This takes way to long and looks like a pain in the ass.
Yes, it’s very nerve wracking! If you own horses/donkeys/mules you always gotta make sure the person working on their hooves knows what they’re doing. Very basic cleaning care should be done by the owner fairly often, and you always want to make sure you have a professional come work on them on a regular sort of schedule based on the animal’s need. It’s scary because you don’t want to cut too deep, but someone has to do it!
Cut his nails at an 46 degree angle and with a light that's what I do with my dog The back when I bought the clippers it said cut in thin slices at a 45 angle
@@ak47chan20 it's actually better to cut them often. You're more likely to hurt your dog if their nails grow out too long because then the quick (the sensitive part with blood supply) grows out very long. If you trim often and as needed, the quick will stay shorter and you have less of a chance of hurting them. And not cutting nails can cause the dog issues while walking
I’m sure the donkey wanted them gone so much and knew you were helping him I found a pony in a paddock just like this along time ago. Got a farrier to cut and trim him up too that pony was so happy. I confronted the elderly owner..... she said that she believed they drop off. I was disgusted.
I knew this woman who had ponies like this she was about 60 years old and the ponies were hers and her brother’s as children! We got a farrier out to trim them . These donkies had nothing on the ponies.

@@MariSheWolf he didn't had any problems standing up and yes he was just uncomfortable is just like when ur nails get to long it start to make you feel really uncomfortable.
@@orundestiunpre2944 nope! The way these hooves grew put a lot of stress on his heels and caused A LOT of tork on his toes when he stepped. in a well trimmed foot, a horse should be landing with its hoof flat against the ground- not toe nor heel first. However, judging by the weight on this donkeys toes, its a pretty easy deduction that hes probably landing toe first. This leads to pain when he walks, and just when he stands in general. this is also why you see spots of "old" blood or bruising in the video- from the stress put on the laminae and hoof wall from such overgrown hooves! (not to mention the stress on joints, as well.)
If you end up getting another case like this, try using a saw blade such as you would use on PVC piping, i used one on a goat with massively overgrown hooves, because my trimmers would not cut through the hardened excess, but the pvc saw blade worked better than the metal hack saw blade.
In farrier school, we were told to use a hacksaw blade. I never did any hooves this bad, just one also way too long, but it had more hoof form to work with. I was just out of school and was freaking when l ran into blood pools. But it came out all right. I'm a Wyoming farrier

Wow, how long does it take to grow hooves like that? His tendons must have been over stretched for a long time. That hurts. Hopefully he will recover and walk normal again.
unfortunately It would take roughly 3 or 4 years of neglect to cause this much overgrowth, and your correct it more often than not causes bone, tendon and nerve damage so this poor boy will be recovering for a while (some don't recover fully) x

It's crazy to me, I've always known horses had shoes put on and that people did something to their hooves not I've never seen it. My grandparents had horses for us as kids but there was someone that took care of that kinda stuff, the only thing I ever did was bath my girl and brush her and that was with my step grandfather. Sad that here I am 43 years old and learning what happens to their poor feet of they're neglected. It breaks my heart and leaves me sad. Poor babies. He's so cute.
Horse owner here. Just thought I’d add that not all horses need shoes. I have a half-Arab mare who is “barefoot.” Our farrier comes every 5 or six weeks and gives her hooves a trim. They grow like our toenails so can be filed. Mine uses that device he’s got in the video to trim all around the edge and then a perfect horseshoe piece comes off. Shoes are typically used for horses only when needed because 1)costs more to shoe than barefoot trim 2)a horse can easily pull and lose a shoe, or injure itself with it 3)you’re putting holes in the hoof and hence run the risk of introducing bacteria. At our barn we generally only shoe the front because our horses are turned out together in groups and hind shoes can cause fatal damage should a horse kick (horses shod in the hind generally would be turned out alone). But shoes can also do wonders for a horse with issues like thin sole or to correct other problems. One of my friends has a horse that has wedges in its shoes to correct the angle of the hooves. He went from dead lame to perfect. Farrier work is actually incredible when done correctly, so very important, and physically hard! There’s an old saying “no feet no horse.: And it’s so gratifying to see what a difference it can make for the rescues.
Thank you for caring for this little donkey! I loved how you put his hoof on your boot to trim it. It looked like you were trying to make it comfortable for him.
You had a hard days work young man. I trimmed two hooves almost that bad once. Took me a while. Found out later that mare has never been trimmed without sedation! Calm folks help make calm equines I guess. Love the meat saw idea! Saves time! Lucky animal to have you work on it. The donkey looks 100% better! Great job. 👏👍
Trimming a donkey with feet like this was then end of my very short farrier career. Too tall, too slow. And then I hurt my back x 2. Both incidents with donkeys with feet like this. It is scary cutting off that amount of hoof. I was living the adventure right along with you. Looking forward to seeing the second video.
So my grandparents, parents, and family also myself now. We’ve kept at least 24 donkeys on the ranch the last 80yrs literally. I grew up around them taking care of them. I feel stupid not knowing this was possible to get that big! It’s unthinkable! Our animals are like kids so they never have got neglected to find out this could happen! Thank you for taking care of that poor thing!

after going to school for horses and working on a horse farm and learning so much about proper care of horses hooves from my boss who shod horses, i had the bless fortune of meeting a poor little pony with curled up hooves, the little guy was so sad he could hardly walk, i drove for over an hour home to get my tools and came back and trimmed his hooves, his sadness never changed as i trimmed away his fairy shoes he just stood there, when i finished the last foot and untied him he took off running, kicking up his hind feet in the air and jumping, i guess he was happy, 😄we all were. working on that horse farm was the best job i have ever had, i was in my late teens then and i'm 70 now, i love horses and horses can tell when they are loved.

I wonder what happened to the donkey. What about wild horses and donkeys, how do they manage it without human. Apparently they didn't have that problem. So what happened to this one?
@@seanleith5312 in the wild they don’t have this problem as they wear their feet down naturally on rocks, sand, rough terrain etc. and their diet is sparse
when in human care they are given regular food, and are kept in soft pastures so they don’t have the opportunity to wear naturally. With all of the nutrients humans give them they grow quickly and need regular trimming every 6-8 weeks

I feel that too. Hate the cruelty but love the recovery
No excuse? I'm sure being on your deathbed is a good enough excuse as it was stated the owner was sick, it's not like the owner wanted things to happen this way. But yes on a general basis it would be cruel for an owner to neglect their animals as such
@@kekeh.5696 Hooves being overgrown to this extent doesn't happen overnight, or even over a few months. This is years of neglect.
If you're "on your deathbed" long enough for this amount of growth to occur, I daresay you have time to arrange some sort of care for the animal.
@@mokko759 the guy legit said they were ill for a long time and then died. Don’t judge people you don’t know. God I get nervous cutting my cat’s nails for fear of accidentally hurting her, I can’t imagine doing this
Yes, it’s very nerve wracking!
Ikr i dont cut my dog nails cus im scared i might cut wrong and hurt him
Cut his nails at an 46 degree angle and with a light that's what I do with my dog
The back when I bought the clippers it said cut in thin slices at a 45 angle
@@ak47chan20 it's actually better to cut them often. You're more likely to hurt your dog if their nails grow out too long because then the quick (the sensitive part with blood supply) grows out very long. If you trim often and as needed, the quick will stay shorter and you have less of a chance of hurting them. And not cutting nails can cause the dog issues while walking

@@i.am.therabbitman8684 oh ok
If you end up getting another case like this, try using a saw blade such as you would use on PVC piping, i used one on a goat with massively overgrown hooves, because my trimmers would not cut through the hardened excess, but the pvc saw blade worked better than the metal hack saw blade.
I used to use an old strong knife and hammer to trim my horse's hooves. Works well.
@@jajahgadis probably doesn't feel so good to the horse!

I can't tell how many times I've watched this one video. He always speaks as if we're there personally and thats very much appreciated
