If you're anything like me, you'll find you often are tempted to over complicate things. And with figures and people this can be disastrous. It's so easy to simplify buildings and trees, but it can be hard to work out how to simplify a human form!
Remember, urban sketching isn't about capturing a scene like a photo - it's about capturing the essence in an enjoyable way, in your style. People don't sit still for us to sketch, so we need quick ways to put figures onto paper so our scene matches our expectations!
This is a method I often use for sketching simple figures into my scenes, and I hope that it helps someone else out there - either as a confidence booster or a new technique to play with.

The key thing I’ve learned is that there is always a tendency to draw the head too big so I make a conscious effort to make them on the smaller side. Big bodies are more believable than big heads 🙂
Very true very true!!! Hope you're having fun sketching people :)
Good advice👍
Helpful advice. Thanks!
'My CURRENT favourite pen'... lol I feel that
Toby. So glad I found your channel. Could you maybe do a video on how you handle people sitting in cafes? Like couples at tables and groups at outdoor cafes. I really struggle with this common urban scene. And or just the ordinary people on benches and sitting on blankets in the park etc. Riding bikes.
Thank you, kind Sir… You made the concept of adding people less scary for me… I do believe I can tackle this… 🤗
Haha brilliant. Really glad to hear, just go for it and find a style that suits you!
toby, your tutorials are some of the best I've found. your skills in sketching are rivaled by your ability to convey information effectively.
I sure love your teaching! Things are so much more easy then I try to make them. Love your style, your words and your voice.
Thank you for doing this for us beginners who feel we "can't" draw! Now I have hope! :O)
You are so welcome!
This is exactly what I was going to say but you said it so much better!

73 years old and having a ball with your videos....one or two practices sketches every day or so... I am able to produce some very rudimentary little drawings and watercolor/pen paintings that provide immense enjoyment....Thanks for you splendid tutorials and lighthearted presentation!
That is awesome!
@@TobySketchLoose Thanks..have found your 10 lesson intro course and am continuing to amaze myself with producing a small sketch I have always wanted to do but had no idea where to begin. This means a great deal to me; your method of instruction is accessible and most pleasant (I taught for 30 years). I will probably enroll in the regular class once I have finished the intro. Still can't believe I can sketch.....Thanks so much!
Excellent, fun advice! Thank you. ❤

Great to hear, thank you Salil!
Thanks Toby! I'm using your suggestions!
Awesome!!
THANKS so much. I have avoided 'people' in sketches as they just never looked RIGHT. And when I see how simple you make yours and they look great, I know I can do this! I will practice lots and then start dropping these characters into sketches. I love how they bring scenes to life that are otherwise rather boring. Well done. Clear and simple instructions. I will watch whatever else you have done. Much appreciated.
You're very welcome!
Found it very useful. Looking forward to learn from you 🙏

Glad it was helpful!
Thanks Toby,..love your videos,.. appreciate it mate 🙏🏼 i learn so much
:D
This is a bit of a game changer for me - I was so obsessed with rendering things perfectly that I was too afraid to start! Remembering that human beings love to see patterns and representation in shapes takes the pressure out of perfectly translating my observations into an accurate representation.
Great to hear it helped!
How helpful. Thanks!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much. Going to try urban sketching on my next trip
Have fun!
Great ideas
Will definitely try it !
Please do
Thank you 🎉!
Those WN pens are my new favourite too. I should buy them in bulk.
Haha they are lovely - currently have a load of unipin, I found them en masse in a sale. But they're really not the same!

As Always great tips!
Thanks so much!
drawing people has always scared me. After watching this today, I took the train downtown and watched people, and I could see everyone as those 3 shapes! Tomorrow, I start sketching
Haha brilliant
I love this style im new to art & looking for a new hobby as a way of recording my holidays im going to give this a go and see what happens it looks as if all my mistakes can add to the finished scene

Any time!
perspective tip is especially useful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanking you so much it was most useful. Ill be following your channel as I am English living in Australia. I find the English reserve and modesty most refreshing after all the loud extroverted Americans on utube.
Thanks Mary!
Cool Video, helps a lot
Glad to hear it! :)
Wow❤❤❤
🙏
Thankyou.
No problem!
This is something I have struggled with, maninly due to lack of practice but also due to not really understanding the rules. This video has helped me learn how to start improving on this. My biggest problem is trying to put to much detail in, especially if I try to draw a face, feet or hands.
Have you got a similar instructional video for drawing cars and other vehicles before painting with watercolour?
Glad it helped a bit! I haven't at present got a car video, but it's a good idea - I'll pop it on the to do list :)
Nice!
Thanks 👍👍😊
Hi Toby if you share amazon links for your pens, I can buy them through you so you get the referral amount. A small way to show our appreciation
❤
This applies to windows and door frame tips down a street. I believe.
Yes
Less is more. So cool! Tks.
Thanks George!
Nice vídeo! I know you do mostly pen and water color, but can you do a tutorial to sketch with charcoal pencil? There are only hiper realist videos with charcoal pencil, i really would enjoy to drawn loosey with charcoal pencil! Thanks and good job
I can try :D Will take some experimentation haha

Please draw your sketches larger so that we can see them better. Your sketches are so good and you explain them so well so I want to see them more clearly. Thanks.
Thanks Pam - that is helpful feedback and I appreciate you giving it in a kind way :)
😊
Nice. Thank you. What pen are you using?
I think from your other comment you've seen, but they're winsor Newton fineliners - I think 0.1mm or 0.3mm as these are my favourite in that brand!
