Thank you for this. I'm making a horse from scratch from air dry clay. You inspired me to buy some new tools and the silicone pointed tools are the best. Thank you for showing the best way to do feathered hooves!
Thank you for this amazing video! It help me so much! I have my standing saddlebred and I had him as a child.. all things go wrong there, so you probably know what I’m gonna say.. well he broke an ear and his tail. So thankful is wasn’t one of his legs 😆
I was trying to Sculpt some missing tails on my warhammer horses without a form to stick to. I'm going to try styrene as a form to Sculpt the tail to now. Thank you for the help. Aystralia
An INCH apart?! I just caught that! Maybe a centimeter?! Please tell me it's a centimeter! Love your work DeeJayB! You've inspired me to get back into art and customizing. I'm forever grateful I found your channel!
Thanks so much for your tutorials - I'm into Horse of a Different Color and Trails of Painted :Ponies horses and also cringe when I get a horse with a broken tail - Can you help me figure out how to reattach the tail?
I'm new to customizing horses and this - like the coloring vids - helps a lot. One question though: wouldn't it safe a lot of work/time to make the tail shape out of PVC (from an old shampoo or dish soap bottle) instead of cardboard wrapped in glued tape?
I’m going to sculpt model horses and sell them, i have several designs in my head but i don’t know which one to pick from, they’re all pony designs but not any particular preed, just a pony i came up with on my own, i don’t know if i should do a flat back and crupe or a more rounded back and crupe
It would be a similar technique. I would recommend reinforcing it with wire, insert several wire bits from the neck, then add blue tape and shape to your desire. Add super glue and baking soda to make it firm. Sculpt your hair detail on top.
Maybe this is a dumb question, idk, but is that apoxie basically clay or what? I'm trying to get into clay sculpting so I'm trying to learn about all the clays I can find. I'm still learning the differences between air dry and oil based clays. Sry
Wow thax i usually ask people maybe some hints for making these, all they do is try to sell me there product when I just want to make my own and give it to my father as a gift lol
I pulled most of the original mane off with pliers, and a mini hacksaw for the tail. The Dremel also works well for this, sanding down the leftover bits. I have a tutorial on this coming soon :)
@@DeeJayBeStudios I imagine using pliers and a hacksaw wouldn't be too effective on a stablemate haha I think I might just invest in Dremel! Thanks for the swift reply!
@@caballuscollecting I actually prefer using the hacksaw in most cases, as it is more precise for cuts. Takes a little more effort for sure, but I find I hit places I don't want with the Dremel... However a Dremel is a great investment for fast sanding- smoothing down the cut the hacksaw makes and removing detail, even ears on a Stablemate. For sure!
I have a few older models in which I don't like the mane and would like to add onto what is there. Do you recommend sanding down the color? Or can I just add on top of what is there already? In other words is there any prep needed on the original mane to add to it?
You can lightly sand it so the clay has something to stick to. But the colour does not matter, no. Unless it’s been with acrylic and has sealer. Then it must be stripped
Awesome video! But I was wandering if you could do a tutorial on how to to do paint markings and appaloosa's? I'm trying to get better at paint horses and appy's, but not sure what techniques to use. Got any tips? Anyway LOVE your work :)
I hope to film some of these soon, I am still perfecting my skills as well, once I find a shareable method I will definitely make a tutorial. Thank you for your support!
You need to use either Apoxie or Magic Sculpt. Other/cheaper clays do not behave in the same ways. Apoxie comes in small quantities. You can buy 1/4 of a pound to try it out. It is only about $15 on Amazon. I have links in my description.
I use Free Form Sculpt from Smooth-on and it is perfect. You have about an hour's working time, depending on the temp and humidity, and it is set up in 2-3 hours. It smooths very nicely with a tool dipped in water. I've tried all the epoxy and apoxie's out there and I find this to work best for me. It costs about $27 for a trial size which is 3 lbs of clay. It's a two part epoxy that is mixed 1:1 by volume. I have sculpted a 1:6 scale horse, a 1:9 Scale horse and still have enough left for fixes or touch-ups. It also doesn't shrink or crack with time and age as many do. Good luck with your sculpting. KAT (The Perfect Pony Collection)
Air dry clay has a tendency to crack and crumble as they are not made to be durable for projects such as this. A two part resin based product will obviously give better results. All I can say is try, even if for the practice - a cheaper brand of clay could be useful. If you are customizing for fun, it just might work for your shelf piece models!
Wonderful information. Thank you for taking the time.
Videos like this are so much more helpful for me than something just telling me how to do it. Thanks so much for sharing your techniques!
You are most welcome!
This is so great Darynn!! I love how well you explain your process.
Wow.. think some of mine need reworking but not brave enough to try.
You should go for it! That's the only way to learn
Yeah I feel the same way... but like DeeJayBee said, just go for it!
New subscriber! Don’t know how you don’t have more... this is amazing work.
Wow so cool I can try when I actually get the clay im gonna do it on schleich horses and Breyer
I love your artistic technics!!!! Thankyou for showing the finished piece; it`s beautiful!!
THANK YOU! After watching this titoryel I made the best mane I have ever made!😍

I have a video coming soon on how to repair broken legs as well. Glad I could help! Thanks for the comment.
Just as an idea to try, I like to use hot glue instead of the baking soda method. It works the same way and I find it is just as easy! :)
Yes! I’ve been tempted to try this as well. Lately I’ve been working with Apoxie base instead!
The wet paint brush after detail is just great thank you
Wow such great work. Thank you so much you inspired me again 😊for long time I wanted to give up this hobby but now the passion is back 😍

You sure can!
@@DeeJayBeStudios That's great to know. Thank you for the answer.
On the small waxed tipped tool, is this something you can purchase or can you create your own? Love watching the tutorials, and learning more! Thanks~
I’d also recommend using hot glue in place of the blue scotch tape if you’d like a firmer base
This is something I want to experiment with in the future.

Thank you for such a great tutorial! May I ask what you were adding onto the superglue when you were hardening the edges of the tail base?
Baking Soda
I must agree with not having too many small pieces. one of my first rescuplts was a classic Arabian and his tail looks like a lot of icicles 😂
I tried doing fetlock hair a few months ago it was awful lol

What Gauge of Wire do you use? 12 Gauge?
I love how I don't have clay, I don't have a breyer horse, I've never tried resculpting, but I'm still here because I'm bored-
What is some other cheeper recommendations for clay just to start out? 😊

This is awesome! Ty!
Does air dry clay work?
Have u bought new breyer? I love the "unboxing breyer" videos! 😂❤️
I will have to film the next one!

Note to others - this super glue and baking soda mix can be very painful if you get it on your skin! Be careful it IS. Chemical bond
Yes! It will burn. Wear gloves if you have to.
Can u make me one? I’ll buy
I’m sorry but, 3:03! Lol
