Just a disclaimer to all prospective PhD students, please enroll in a PhD program ONLY and ONLY if you have genuine interest towards research and academia. I've seen many students who are good academically but struggle a lot in the PhD programs because they have 0 interest in research. PhD is no joke, it's a commitment of at least 4-6 years working 40-60+ hours a week. If you have no interest in research, it's not the end. Look for jobs in your home country or other countries. But don't torture yourself for half a decade in doing something you absolutely despise doing.

Agreed 100%. It may be more than 6 years if you are pursuing PhD in natural sciences in the US, thanks to the pandemic disrupting experimental work for many (saying from experience). PhD takes a LOT of dedication, effort, patience….at the end of the end, it is all about passion….do you eat, breath, sleep, dream your research? Then, go ahead and do a PhD. Please don’t do a PhD in the US to get visa sponsorship or if you want a green card. It is a not a mature decision.

Sometimes they don't have any other choice. This is their only way to prolong their stay in US. Trust me, many of us would gladly relocate to any other country if they had a job offer waiting for them. But the fact of the matter is, they don't have one. Its not just US, almost every economy around the world is suffering now. Don't put the blame entirely on students, when the economy is shit.

For the rest bottom 75% of the students. I would advise them to not come to US for masters until at least the interest rates start coming down. If you make a decision,
    1) Make sure that you have some niche skills and are in a specialized industry (core engineering) with not many people. The software engineering and IT/IS jobs are the worst hit now and many generic software jobs are on the verge of getting eliminated.
    2) Try to get an MBA 3-4 years after masters and quickly climb the corporate ladder to be on a safer side. The bottom layer of the pyramid is the most disposable (particularly engineers with years of experience earning high salaries and not have anyone working under them).

MBA is an overhyped degree that does not guarantee a decent job. Lot of what that gets taught can be learnt by reading books on your own. Most of it is general knowledge and can be learnt via experience. Wouldn't spend money on something that does not matter and add value to my knowledge commensurate with the money it takes.

Doing a terminal MS in USA in general directly after a BTech in India is mostly a waste of time and money. Instead use those two years to work in your related field of study and get the experience. At that stage you will come to know what interests you and from there you can decide on the next steps. Even then come to US to do a terminal MS only if you are joining a university which is well reputed and/or close to industries which are in your field of interest.

Hello Professor, I am totally inline with you on this. My brother who had came to USA 3-4 years ago. Got his first job like this. He graduated from a good university. But he said he had to fake experience prior starting her masters. And then when he got an offer here from Desi Consultancy he got that contract role for a sister company for CISCO. He shifted to that city soon after got a new car and financed a new home. Last month he called me back asking a referral I was too hesitant as I work as direct role in FAANG company. Yesterday he told me he got another 3 year contract 3 layers consultant firm. Now he works sister company thru consultancy but still has his linkedin as "Working for CISCO"

Its obvious 99% of people look at masters as significant investment of time and money and they are looking for ROI immediately. The last thing those students want to do is again torture themselves with more academic work unless they have an interest in curiosity, teaching others with patience and not making much or no money. Coming up with genuine research topics is no joke too as it involves deep diving into several sub fields within an area and scoping out potential material of value to humanity. It could be more painful than living in basement. So, what's better than a masters degree? Another masters degree 😆. If you can't do PhD, do more masters degrees. 6 years worth of masters degrees is equal to or more difficult than a single PhD, anybody will surely stand out with so many advanced degrees but making $200K commitment to get $60k job is also something that needs to be carefully considered as only rich students without loans will be able to take so many hits designed by corrupt people, system and institutions.

I would like to know if you are aware of any Univ that has a program that allows me to continue working while attempting the PHD in some form of remote work. Please let me know your thoughts so that I can make some strategy over the coming years (or before I come into mid 30's😂).

    Okay understood.
I recently graduated and as you know the job market is a disaster right now. My question is, even if I go for a PhD, by the time I complete my PhD it'll be around 2030. So what the guarantee that I won't face the same problem as I'm facing now. What the guarantee that the market won't be saturated with too many PhDs.

for the most part, NO... because they already know, from the large pool or applications, people coming from India, the best ones are only from the IITs... so its a lot easier to pick them and neglect 99 others.
even if you want to stand from 'them', develop a strong research profile, with papers and conferences, research internships in national research labs.

The world is getting into trouble. A small percentage of students used to come to the US for studying MS, but now a lot are coming. It will be difficult for everyone to get a job. India used to be an agricultural country, but now it’s a technology-driven country. However, India is not creating enough jobs and relies on other countries for employment opportunities.

@@STOCKmarket-fo1fh - Well, the reason India is now not creating jobs is because Sri Modi ji is too busy focussed on religion and creating Ram Rajya. And the young middle class are also very happy to have this. So, naturally there is no time to focus on the economy and creation of jobs, etc. You will have to decide what you want. Ram Rajya or a stronger economy with more jobs, etc. As of now, people seem to prefer Ram Rajya. So you can't complain.

Trump cannot do this unless Congress passes a law authorizing it. They may do so because that branch is full of politicians who promote America last policies. Employers here love third-world workers willing to accept lower wages and oppressive conditions as they chase a fantasy which doesn't exist.
Some estimate 40% of human jobs worldwide will be converted to AI within 15 years. Companies here already started. They've been posting ghost vacancies to create the illusion of a worker shortage and a well economy. A lot of people, especially 20-somethings, have been complaining about losing their jobs and/or not being contacted/hired for other ones which don't exist.

Should I focus on the certifications to gain some skills, as I am new to Cybersecurity, or should I focus on the thesis on Cybersecurity?
Right now, I am spending my summer time on the certifications.

if you're going for a PhD it means you are going for RESEARCH. therefore, you should focus on publications.
do whatever you can to land publications. learn some research skills and know your topic well.
certifications are good, but they're useless for PhD. PhD is a NARROW field of topic. certification courses have topic that is too broad of a topic for publications and research.
