Got my PhD at 26 and got a 500k TC at a big tech with my EB1B green card at 29. All the masters people enjoyed renting a nissan sentra and posing at National Parks at 23 while I was slogging with my thesis at 25. Yes absolutely.
Now I will chill with a permanent residency while I watch the masters H1B guys get laid off and pack their bags and get GC after 130 years. Good Luck to Harnoor.
Thank you Desi Prof for calling a spade a spade.

Being a PhD scholar I can easily put some valid points into this essential yet ignored topic in our country India:
    1. PhD especially in India very much depends on PhD student and his/her supervisor
    2. Still, the Government of India spend a penny on PhD or Research in the universities even in the prestigious universities.
    3. Due to financial constraints Indian students suffer a lot in the PhD journey.
    4. If supervisor and student are in the same momentum then certainly the PhD can be completed in 4 years maximum with some quality publications.
    5. But irony is that doesn't happen usually.
    6. In developed nations USA, Ireland, UK, Germany, Canada etc...PhD students avails lot of support from the government bodies more accurately they are treated a national treasure but in developing economies it is just vice versa where in a country like India with robust population of more than 140 CR with majority of politicians are corrupt and minimal educated only basic education they can never ever value the long term study neither they respect.
    7. In India government spend billions of rupees in freebies and billions in statue buildings and political stunts.

PhD’s are the source of research and new ideas and future generations of professors who can teach. Governments know the importance of PhD’s and love them. Note the eb1a green card in USA. Finally, PhD is the best place to hide during a recession and many professors get good students during this period

It is somewhat True in India that mostly PhD is destroying careers.
The investment in R&D by Govt. in India is very minimal so doing a PhD in any tech specialisation results in no other option but to pursue a lectureship in any college especially govt. college. The R&D industry in India least absorbs PhD graduates and there are very few openings.
The % of PhD graduates in India especially from top tech institutes is very low and often treated as a labour in lab by not so good advisors.
I would like to quote a statement by Gaurav Aggarwal IAS Rank 1 IIT-IIM Alumni that when you are earning very good in a corporate job then after a certain time the amount in your bank is just nothing but a number and the real joy lies in pursuing a context and doing some
    meaningful stuff.

PhD for sure is about being passionate about research and discovering within the scope one has in the subject he chooses. And PhD is not just about research or publishing work. Its a journey of evolution where you refine your thought process and critical learning and you even learn a lot from the mentorship. These skills are not applied just to your field after your PhD but to everything else you come across in your life afterwards. PhDs can tread anything in their life with the skills they gain during the enduring journey of PhD. One simple one line answer to this guy Harnoor is that: There's zameen asmaan farak in people who are passionate and determined to research and want to get a PhD versus those who do PhD because they are not getting H1 during their OPT or who didn't find a job after their MS. It is definitely a nightmare for the latter.

  • @tendukheda-vf5vn

Even a masters is not required for you to gain the skills to work in a tech sector. Kids who are citizens just do a bachelors and earn as much as you do after a masters.
If people got STEM OPT after an Indian bachelors, do you think a single person will do their masters to acquire "skills"? Harnoor seems to be all about money money and savings savings.

Most people who do PhD in US often don't work in the field they do PhD. Unless you do a a job in a field directly related to your field of PhD you will not be considered for the GC as a person with PhD for shortening your GC que.
Plus the fact is most people are not fit to do PhD even if you do get into some PhD program.

Harnoor has all the wrong ideas as to why one works towards a PhD. His whole focus is on making money which may not be everybody's goal in life.I am surprised he even has a masters degree. I am not sure why he even went to high school when he could have easily gotten a job without even going to high school. The reason for obtaining a PhD is for the pure joy of discovering something new and for the sheer pursuit of knowledge. His views are completely screwed up and not conducive towards excellence in anything. Sad!

They value their package and the benefits that it brings. They want to achieve quick success and don't have the patience needed for a PhD. I am not sure if they will understand much of your comments. However, your words hold much more value for those who are currently pursuing or want to pursue PhD and are dealing with the thoughts conveyed by Harnoor.

You got very lucky - your area has a very good job market, you somehow got a good advisor, people of your age got greencards immediately with EB1 and am sure there's a lot of luck involved in getting a good research portfolio also
I know some Math and Physics PhDs in the US who am sure worked very hard and are very talented, but are not even getting a basic industry job just because their area has hiring restrictions or their advisor was unhinged.
My suggestion is both you and Harnoor should give advice starting with the disclaimer that many others who took the same path failed due to external factors

In certain fields (for example, Biotechnology), a PhD is a must to move up the ladder. Masters may fetch you a job but it takes much longer for a non-PhD to become a team leader. Of course, if someone is satisfied with a base-level job, then obviously PhD would be a waste of time for that person.

This always a thing with people who are money oriented, it’s not wrong after all money is very essential but people like harnoor make it seem that you do a job only to get money. Sometimes people want to do something they like, it’s more about passion for a particular field. I could have gotten a normal IT job last year but I didn’t want to do it because I wanted to study more and gain knowledge, maybe in future I would even love to teach if I gain the skills to do so. It’s something with us Indian students, majority of us just want to earn money in IT field even if it means to do engineering from an unrelated branch. The fact is that if Masters wasn’t necessary for getting a job in US then we Indians wouldn’t even think about doing it, there’s a reason why masters students are majorly international students who just want to start a career in US.

This prof has very little experience living life he is all about working in state funded jobs . Most army people are not fit for corporate jobs. Their life experience has very little to offer to the corporate world. True there are some ex army people who are successful but by and large they are below average performers in corporate world. PhD students do a lot internships at top places like Meta, Google Brain and Microsoft research every summer and earn just as much as anyone in the industry. They don't have the burden of a frickin loan on their heads. I mean just look at the number of masters students without a job in 2024 just working as some goddamn volunteer to prolong their OPT.
PhDs by the time they graduate would have spent 2-3 summers at top research facilities and 99% of the time have a return offer.

You may write some code for assignment and dissertation project but it will be not on level required for most software developer projects which you are already working on. Better improve your coding skills try to become senior dev/ architect. Go for if you want to go in research or do phd. If you are looking for same kind of developer jobs than you will waste 2 years.

As we can understand @HarnoorSinghOfficial has a very narrow point of view about PhD. I like this video because the speaker in the video was very neutral and only focused on important points of pursuing PhD. Also by comparing videos we can understand how much broad mind set is of the person who has completed his PhD. Life is not about just earning money(Although money is important) and showing your luxury lifestyle, it is only good for the content sake. Harnoor has a huge fan base, I think he should make videos before doing a proper research but he cannot do that as he is against Research students. Everyone's life is not same and everyone's timelines differs, Enjoy your life and gain as much as knowledge as you can. Knowledge might not bring a ton of money but it will definitely give you a good way to live your life. I'm super passionate about aerospace and dream of working at NASA. I've worked in IT as a software engineer, but I want a job focused on research, not coding. Can you give me some advice? I am extremely confused between mba and research 😢

I do not see your point - in your opinion number theory was garbage until we invented cryptography, giant magnetoresistance was garbage until we invented hard drives, semiconductor physics was garbage until we invented the transistor. Modern scientific research is new and look at the amazing things that it has given us - aircrafts, smartphones, computers. There were a lot of incremental advances in the fields before we passed the threshold to have utility for the society at large. Please respect the scientific process.

There is little doubt that a PhD is head and shoulders over masters.and a tech phd is not a roadside position.besides a tenured teaching position is far more secure than an industry position. Even otherwise a phd especially an american one certainly above masters .the problem here is that people do not have the stamina for a phd slogthats the fact of the matter.
I prefer watching u speak of issues than a tourif ur house .i do not envy ur house but i envy u ur PhD.i am far from rich .i had a double masters frompune univ double qualifying subject eligibility s .
I have no phd which i wanted .
I used to teach pg non tech.
Now its too late and after illness i can no longer work close to retirement and other family inheritance issues to sell / dispose off. To tackle.
I find ur views on usa academics more interesting.
I have no fascination to live in usa tho its an interesting place to b .
But with allthe murders discrimination gun culture drug abuse immigration issues indian homicide cases recession lay offs. for most thinking indians usa is the last place to b .
Another point of present day hindi film greats .its comman knowledge that so called filmmaking is a cover up of every imajinable illegal business escort service proatitution drug running fake currency distribution antinational chines funded sedition human trafficking hawala porn etc etc .so thats how the money is made in socalled film making business.
They really shud not b held as role models of success

Even the people who developed chatgpt also had many PhD holders in that team.
I also saw his video although some points he raised I agree but the way he delivered it as if that after PhD we are no more eligible for job.
Plenty of PhDs go to tech companies and industries for jobs. Moreover I completely emphasize and agree on your point that the corporate sector is very unreliable around the world we can be laid off any moment atleast PhD holders have option to go back to academia which is much more stable. This is the only reason why I am pursuing PhD I will go to industry immediately following my graduation but I will have a option of returning to academia as professor if I am laid off.

      Short answer very low chances.
If you really want to innovate move to Russia they are more on cutting edge than anyone else. But their school is 13-16 years, engineering is 6 years, all academic and research positions require very very very rigorous training and skills unlike rest of the world.

Fact of the matter is if you get into an ivy league for a Masters there isn't any reason for a phD, it those who get into grade 2 universities and non-ivy league universities who are forced to go for phD, and then try to make excuses why phD is the better alternative.

The thick of things is that if you do not enjoy research, you will not make the most out of your PhD journey. 'Forced to go for PhD' - that is the worst mindset. You only do it if you are hell-bent on inventing/discovering something and pushing the state-of-the-art.
