The last programme that was shown on BBC Two on the 31st of August 1997 was a film called Ring of Brightwater from 1969 at 11.20pm that preceded Everyman Canterbury at 10.40pm as it was just a revised schedule for BBC Two whilst on BBC One they showed the service at St. Paul’s Catherdal as it was around 11.50pm as where BBC2 could’ve picked the Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 from the BBC Proms 97 as a tribute to Diana.
This is the end of The Restless Year (a programme shown over Christmas 1996 using timelapse photography taken in the Cotswolds) followed by Full Circle with Michael Palin at 8pm, then skipping to the end of the next programme Stephen Hawking's Universe followed by The Natural World at 9.40pm.
The timestamps are as follows: 0:00 End of unknown programme 0:09 BBC1 new schedule for Sunday evening 0:24 BBC2 slide: Stephen Hawking's Universe 0:33 BBC2 continuity into Full Circle with Michael Palin/out of Stephen Hawking's Universe 1:35 BBC1 new schedule for Sunday evening (again) 1:57 BBC2 slide: Canterbury 2:09 BBC2 ident into Natural World
I read somewhere that News 24 was launched soon after in response to the unprecedented event of Diana's death, that they needed a rolling news service and so were prepared for when such events occurred again.
@@HalfbrickVHS BBC News 24 was planned to launch in 1998 with the new Digital television service, and I believe was rushed into launch for November 1997, in fact it was not available on many platforms until 1998.
Yes, they rushed the launch after this had happened, rather than wait until they launched along with the rest of their digital channels, the following year.
