    Great little chat after you felled the red oak. Definitely not a healthy tree. I find it very enjoyable to look for weak points and judge a trees health. I think every adult who lives near forests should understand the basics like what a healthy crown should look like for their local species.
    I don't read a lot of novels but I did just listen to a podcast about John Muir. I had no idea about the difference between a conservationist and a preservationist. There are large pieces of land that I do think should be thought of as sacred and thus nobody needs to pay a dime to enjoy it but I do understand sometimes there's a need for funding. I figured it would be interesting to hear your take on it and also how much you probably love Muir.

    • @KevinsDisobedience
      @KevinsDisobedience  3 роки тому +6

      I agree. Anyone who spends anytime in the forest should also spend at least that much time trying to understand it. As far as my stance on conservation v preservation, I’m actually a little torn. We have a nature preserve near us, which no man is allowed to step foot on. On one hand, I think it’s good to set aside certain plots of land and allow nature to evolve without human influence, but on the other hand we are part of nature and our shaping it is also natural. I am, however, a major supporter of Nature Reserves and National/State Parks. Without the taxes and regulations, the land would be sold and cleared for development, or clearcut for lumber and rendered fallow. I’m obviously not opposed to ethically harvesting lumber or, for that matter, other natural resources like fossil fuels. As you well know, I did this wood lot a big favor by taking out this sickly tree and making more room for the others, both above and below ground.
      And yes, I would have liked to have met Muir. He saw the future of what would become (has become) of the woods without government regulation. As you might also have guessed, I’m not thrilled that any collective group has the power to regulate the freedoms of any one individual, but alas I understand it is a necessary evil; for many complicated reasons, but especially because large collectives, i.e., multi-million dollar corporations would run afoul of basic moral principals despite free-market correctives. A longer conversation is necessary here, but I hope this is enough to answer your question. Thanks for your genuine curiosity.

      @@KevinsDisobedience I actually got to adventure around in Muir woods which I'm sure is named after him. Absolutely incredible. Muir might hate it haha. I’m envious. No, I haven’t had the privilege. I’ve been to LA, but never Nor Cal. I’d love to visit Washington state some time, but I hate traveling so it might be awhile before you get me on a plane again. Three years ago my wife and I went to Iceland. It was amazing, but the plane ride home was a nightmare. Long story, but suffice it to say a 6hr plane ride turned into a 12hr layover. But yes, I absolutely do want to see the big old redwoods before I die. I’d also like to hit up Montana and Northern Canada as well. But I think our next trip is going to be a month long leisurely road trip up the east coast, terminating in northern Maine.

    Excellent video Kevin! That double looked mean on that slim handle. Absolutely beautiful. I know exactly what you’re feeling. An axe that looks good is one thing, but one that’s tuned up to work just right with your body really gives you the fizz. I doubt we live too far from each other; it’d be great to meet you in person. There aren’t too many people around that truly understand the enjoyment and soul of an axe.

    Looks like it was a good day in the woods. Great point about knowing the species of tree before cutting it down and potentially doing more harm then good. I thought it went with out saying, that is until a fellow cordwood guy shared a bucking video. I asked him what kind of tree it was. He said, “I don’t know. A big one.” I suspect that’s more common than I imagined. As for this axe, it’s fantastic. A new favorite to be sure. I actually have a Jersey I need to hang, a Plumb. Maybe I’ll make it my next project. Although I need to make a couple sheaths first. The axe you find yourself defaulting to is always the best user. Thanks for the support, Joey.

    I'm glad you chose to use that swamper in this video. I never thought of using one for much limb work but it looked to be a good choice. I've got a light 4lb Puget Sound I've been meaning to hang and this video helped me make up my mind on trying it out this winter. Thanks for the great work you do putting these videos together as well as the literary interjections. As for gun control...Don't tread on me seems fitting

    • @KevinsDisobedience
      @KevinsDisobedience  3 роки тому +1

      I didn’t use it much at all when it was on a 24” handle, but now it feels like it can do it all. 4lbs is a little heavy for light limbing. That’s not to say you can use it to limb. Of course you can. Just take it easy and be careful not to break through unexpectedly. The extra weight can twist you up like a pretzel if you swing too hard. I’m glad you’d made it to the end and took in Machiavelli. His position is difficult to process, as he suggests that princes (or in our terms, governors) permit some citizens to have arms but not everyone as a means of placating the populace and banking on their allegiance to align themselves with the state in times of war. I just thought it was an interesting observation because it’s not what you would expect.

    Glad to see most of the tennis elbow isn't hanging around your neck and you back in the woods Kev. That axe pattern you have reminds me of a similar Plumb 4lb swamper I have. Watching the head move and bite the log behaves like my heavier 3 1/2 - 4lb heads on 32 inch sticks. Accelerate the head weight fast enough for the cut and the motion looks like you're busy dropping the axe letting the weight do the work. Seems to make a difference with putting chips but I think that's subjective to different factors.

I over did it slightly today bucking up the rest of that big chunk I left in this vid. And yes, I’m loving this 3.5 Swamper now. For me, it’s just about handle length. 32” even feels too big for me nowadays. That used to me my go to length. Then I tried 28” and thought that was the shortest I’d ever want. Then I tried 25-24” handles and was shocked they were usable lengths. After a few swings with a shorty, I don’t even notice the length.
