"You've gotta be a real real man.. You can't go on your back because the mats hot lava and if you fall on your back, then you're in the hot lava!" haha, I'm happy to report that wrestling is still that kid's favorite sport and he's still doing it to this day. (Yeah, it's me..)
This is my first year wrestling and im only a frshman in highschool. I got the 113 varsity spot and I have worked very hard all through season. I lost my first 8 matches. But those loses just drove me to work harder. I then won my first match and placed 3rd at that tournament. I love wrestling and im gonna keep working hard.
I still come back to watch this as middle aged man when I need tough love or inspiration.. no feeling sorry for yourself in life. You have to earn it .
im glad to see someone who understands wrestling... it saved mine too and im only a sophomore in high school wrestling 106, my coach put many hours into teaching us about the blue collar mantality and hard work
Oh how this brings back memories. I wrestled at university of Iowa with the Great Dan Gable for 2 years (I was a junior when he made the team), absolute monster and class act that man was. Throughout my life I have had many “titles” - businessman, Marine gront, Navy SEAL, father, husband, brother - but truly my most cherished title was those 4 years spent on the mats as a corn husker.
@@jonathanc.9247 So you wrestled as a university of Iowa cornhusker with Dan Gable? Pretty sure Dan wrestled for the Iowa state cyclones and the University of Iowa mascot/team name is the Hawkeyes. Cornhuskers are found at the University of Nebraska bud.
@@michaelbradley7621 hahaha you’re a funny guy. As mark Twain said the problem is what you know that just ain’t so. Yes I was on the team with Dan at ISU, I was a cyclone. However, do to my upbringing growing up on a farm shucking corn with my meemaw and papaw I had insanely strong grips that used to frustrate Dan, thus he always called me “the corn husker”
In sixth grade I was a shy kid who was nice to everyone, I join wrestling. Coach says first day "If you can't handle being in a fist fight or beating the crap out of someone get out, we don't want you here." and I've been a different person since.
Since watching this I haven't lost a match this year where as before i kept losing in the semi finals knowing i'd medalled, this changed my whole mental approach to competiton and life.
At the NCAA championships a few years ago, ESPN interviewed some of the top wrestlers (returning champs, etc) Every one of those guys said they lost their first match and they cried.
In wrestling, I lost to Mike Massenzio, Frankie Edgar, and Jim Miller. All of them went on to fight in UFC. They were tough as nails and extremely driven. Not surprised when years later I saw them move onto MMA.
I'm almost 50 & my life's had alot of ups & downs... on every level imaginable. But i was raised in wrestling, & no matter what, wrestling taught me to look in the mirror & never give up. I'm grateful to the sport
He does, but does he hate losing more than he enjoys winning? Wrestlers I’ve known that rely entirely on winning just to not hate the sport end up walking away miserable from the sport.
It is, but it makes individual losses for these guys so detrimental. I think they wrestle more for the hatred of losing than the enjoyment of the sport and winning. I had that mentality and I ended up hating wrestling for a while. I’m raising my son in the sport to enjoy it for what it is. If he wins or loses, what matters most is 100% effort and enjoying the sport. I don’t want him to go through the same mental anguish I did.
Tennis and wrestling. Two sports who differ in ways any man could see. Tennis: agility, HEC, hungry. Wrestling: power, aggression, hungry. Who here can help understand these two sports together? Win you live, lose you die.
Bro wrestling is considered the hardest sport on earth We have 106lbs who bench 160 a lot more than a basketball player who can barely bench 150 and weight more than 160
As a former wrestler, I’d go with water polo as the hardest. Just standing still requires constantly treading water and one must swim around several hundred meters each game. Plus people pee in pools.
I wish I had seen this video while still in high school. One thing most wrestlers over look while they are currently in the haze of the sport, their mentality.
we practice in a 110 degree matroom with little water and food in our system and we work HARD not to mention getting up extra early in the mourning and run in the freezing cold
K.M. Smith when is the last time Oklahoma won a title? That mindset "win you live, lose you die" means give every amount of energy you have to win a match as if you might die if you stop trying. Of course no one dies, but that level of intensity is not just an Iowa thing anymore. Gable came along and since then, any school who wanted to compete needed that mindset. Watch John Smith wrestle. He's an Okie St. wrestler and head coach and I would say that he has a similar mindset. He would probably just word it differently
I go to General Douglas MacArthur high school in Levittown. You said you go to a school starting with the initials "GC" so i assumed you go to garden city high school.
As an alum of the University of Iowa, I can confirm the wrestlers are psychotic. Got bit by one in Sports Column while having a casual conversation with his buddy.
Wrestling is an incredibly hard sport. I was a high school football and track star and very gifted athlete. The wrestling coach asked me to attend the practice because they were missing a wrestler at the weight class that I was in. I didn't make it halfway through.
no doubt, toughest sport a kid can participate in in america (i'm fond of many other stports)........ but nothing tests your physical limits like the grunt circle
Or to quote Dan Henderson who said that if he had continued wrestling, he would have had to quit by now. He said what wrestling training did to his body was way worse than preparing for 5 round championship MMA fights. And this is coming from the guy who has eaten knees and elbows from Anderson Silva.
Notice how all these years we are still ranked among the best? No other team has done that. I go to Lisbon Iowa schools and they have had more than one state champ since the 70's. Look up Carter Happel he's the next one out of lisbon, you will hear the last name happel for years to come

"love to inflict pain on them in front of their parents" - what a disgraceful documentary. This is not what the sport of wrestling is about. There is a reason you shake hands at the beginning and the end. I lost all respect for Iowa because of this film
@exnewyorker4374 your statement tells me about you. At the highest level, you gotta be a lil ornery. Doesn't mean there's no respect. I love their attitudes. Almost comical in a way.
im going back to college and wrestling and i had to come back to this video for motivation
Good documentary. Really wish a higher quality version was available.

I had to wrestle Steve Mocco at an open tournament when I was in high school. It went pretty much the way you figured it would:)

Iowa guys aren't the slickest but they are often the toughest.
and according to this documentary, they are all selfish jerks. too bad
That mentality is why Iowa dominated for 20+ years
