    I am 75 and have had 6 GSDs, 2 at a time, over 25 years. Number one was socialization, which I start early. When I had to work, I used a dog hiker who took my dogs up in the mountain and to lakes, off leash. Of course I only did this after I had trained my dogs to obey off leash. I also take them places, even in my pharmacy. They are very friendly, but have also protected me and my home. As I am older, I spend more time with my dogs, but am not as active. They don’t seem to mind. They follow me everywhere and are very polite. My youngest is 2, so I will be 85-87 when he dies. Since he loves me now I assume he will always love me. He also likes to ride in my Porsche.

      you made me smile. I have a 1.5 year-old female GSD, and hope to get a second in a couple of years (probably male).
      you might want to make arrangements for your dogs in the event you pass before they do. knowing your babies will find a good home should provide some peace of mind

    Gentle is my favorite word to teach mine. I can see their bodies language change immediately when they hear it. It’s super easy too. When they are being sweet and chill you say good gentle. And pet and love on them.
    Then when they are crazy, you say gentle… and praise them when they power down and act chill.
    (Cats also help train gentle lol)

    My german shepherds are like humans, because I have been socializing them since 3 months old. Now they are five yrs old and very smart. They behave and understand like humans. My life has been the happiest and safe. My three queens. 👑👑👑🐶🐶🐶

    Another excellent video, it's true GSD can be taught manners! Not jumping major lesson to teach your GSD they can unintentionally cause physical harm by jumping up on people.
    That pure white GSD wow how beautiful!!!

    yes, socializing is important. Keep an eye on how your dog is taking it and don't push too fast/hard. When my girl was 2 months to a year old I would take her to Lowes and other stores that allow dogs. She would show signs of stress so I would slip her some snacks and keep her moving. We would quickly flow through the store and not linger so she could experience the strangers and noises but not have the stress hormones build up and boil over. As she passed her first birthday she had a big jump in maturity and wasn't bothered nearly as much when going into stores. Try to keep the learning experiences positive or at least having her end with the feeling 'that wasn't so bad'.

      What stores allow dogs? I have a 11 week old and of course we won't take her out till it's safe but I'm all to aware of what happens if german shepherds are not socialized.

    • @georgewashington938
      @georgewashington938 Рік тому +2

      @@Lakirk2023 I take my dog into Lowes and Homedepot. Lots of places won't complain if the dog is well behaved and the store isn't crowded/busy. Pet stores are another good place to take a dog for socialization. Food stores and restaurants don't like dogs because of health regulations.

    I got Nayla at 9 months old, 3 months later she is less aggressive to strangers, but that all goes out the window when she sees other animals. A dog barking through a house window or fence, she would lose her mind. Now depending how wound up she is, a simple "Nayla be a good girl calms her down". Or it can be all teeth and aggresisive behaviour. I just want calm walks. When she spots other dogs. Quite often the other dog, across the street ignores her. I accept she wants to protect, but not provoke it.

    We just adopted a year and a half German Shepherd. We have had Shelties, Samoyeds, Labs, Goldens, and Dalmations. Whenfirst we brought him home, we left the kitchen for just a few minutes and when we came back into our kitchen, he was up on a high counter looking out the window! Fortunately, he had already had real good effective training so, he knew the command, "down". He obeyed at once. We love him! He is so well behaved, as we go into stores that allow dogs, LOVES car rides. Especially, when he hears the Mustang roar up. Oh, he is all over that sound and know it is his special time to go cruisin' with Mom!

    The GSD, God's gift to Humankind......

  • @hughp00
    @hughp00 Рік тому +15

    Ignoring unwanted behavior like jumping is ridicules. My GSD was re-homed twice because of that kind of crap. He was 3 1/2 when I adopted him and totally out of control and did whatever he wanted. From the beginning he LEARNED what was acceptable and what was not, which meant I had to TEACH him by loving guidance and leadership what it was I wanted. I never inflect pain on my GSD, but teaching him and a good quality pinch collar made all the difference. There has to be boundaries and consequences. Children don't get to kick teachers when they want either.

    • @getx1265
      @getx1265 Рік тому +6

      Yup. Hard to just ignore behavior when it's an excited, 100 lb, newly adopted, 20 month old male GSD jumping up to greet you.

      Pinch collars are NOT pain collars. The only reason they were named pinch collars was because you had to pinch the old collars to take them on and off. I never inflict pain on my dog.

      I came to this video specifically in hopes of learning how to train my GSD to stop tackling people as they walk in the door. We have a split level and have to walk up the stairs upon entry. There is no possible way to “ignore” a 75 Ib canine throwing themselves at you while walking up a staircase! Ignoring jumping is ignoring the potential risk of severe trauma to us and our loved ones. It’s absolutely negligent, dangerous and correctable.
      “Grandma flew through the glass door” .. “well did she ignore her?” like WHAT?
      I think I might have to give the pinch collar a try. Thanks for helping more than the video! 😂

    • @rightshotphotography2576
      @rightshotphotography2576 Рік тому +5

      And telling your guests to just ignore him jumping is NOT right. You need to immediately stop your dog from jumping on other people. Train your dog on YOUR time… don’t expect others to calmly accept being scratched, tackled, etc.

      Take him places. I started walking the neighborhood. I hired a trainer and we went to play parks on lead where there were children and adults. He learned to walk next to me and down stay. I hired trainers for all my GSDs, but I was always present. I learned and they learned. I fired one for being too rough.

      It’s not too late to train them now however it will be difficult because ur dog will be fully developed and are a stubborn breedbut take it very slow, keep a distance when on walks around other people and he/she will probably bark a lot and try to run etc but you’ll need to be prepared for that and don’t let them off the lead. Import thing is consistency and really depends on the dog if they are a quick learner or will take long. It will take them but with consistency and go more in public places
