I have SO enjoyed watching your personal insight and thoughts from the chosen books. It has certainly inspired me to widen my scope of resources. Thank you. I am finding your collection of podcasts not only an educational resource to stranded colour work but also a very enjoyable, calming way to spend an afternoon knitting.
I appreciate you mentioning what is included in the Alter knits book and that it comes with a couple a 'jumping off¨ pattens I really like the Brains motif. I been watching a few knitting book round up videos and other youtubers didn't really mention how one you use books like stitch bibles with 250 different stitches.
Arne and Carlos did an excellent interview with Annemore and she still had remnants of that pile of old rags (&orginal knit sweaters!) I recommend it. It is Part 2 of the Norwegian Knitting Traditions series.
Another useful book is "Alice Starmore's Book of Fair Isle Knitting", originally published in 1988. It contains both historical information, practical information, and some patterns, primarily related to early-mid 20th century Shetland garments.
Thank you for such a great video. Alterknit is arriving tomorrow. I'm working on my first stranded project (the Stryta sweater from " Knitting with Icelandic wool" which I think is a great beginner book packed with amazing patterns (mainly sweaters) and the plus for me is that many of the patterns are for men. I'm a Scot living in Scotland so love that my country also has this tradition. This video is a great reference for when I want to deep dive into stranded colourwork. Absolutely loving the baby steps I'm taking at the moment. Thank you also for your previous video on stranded work. It helped give me the confidence to take the plunge - and I'm so glad I did!! X
I love that book, it's absolutely wonderful! (Although I bought mine in Norway so it's the Norwegian-language version, but it's all the same patterns.) I've actually knit a Dalur for myself which I was wearing in my Rhinebeck vlog. Thanks for mentioning it here!
Thank you SO much for this video and sharing your love of colorwork!!! I want to drop everything I’m doing, buy all these books and cast on everything!! You’re an inspiration!!!!
You were excellent entertainment while I swatched this afternoon! You've expanded my knowledge base, made my book wish list grow, and taught me how to pronounce a few words had no idea how to say! Thank you for all the energy you put into your show, it really comes through! (Also, I kinda need to know what you are recording with, the quality is great!)
This was fun to watch while knitting =) I've lived in Norway for quite some time and fell in love with all the knitted items over there. I couldn't really knit myself at that time, but my neighbor actually knitted Setesdal cardigans for everyone in my family. I received my cardigan about 10 years ago, and I still love wearing it. Aside from the designs, I really love how durable stranded colorwork is. I would recommend the book "Estonian knitting" by Anu Pink. It's the first book in a series of 3, but I think only the first book was translated into English. It describes the historical Estonian knitting traditions, but also describes techniques and it has charts.
What a lovely story, thank you for sharing! And thanks for sharing Estonian Knitting - I've encountered that book but not bought it myself. But everything I've heard about it is that it's wonderful!
I love the sweater 💜 you are wearing. I am especially interested in the neckline, it seems that there is a ton of beautiful yoke sweaters but most of the necklines are uncomfortable and a bit shabby. Thank you for the information
Beautiful recommendations! I love Mary Jane Mucklestone’s 200 Fair Isle Motifs and own it. And I think Felicia Ford is an artistic genius I havent seen any new podcasts on Knitsonic recently but if any of your viewers havent heard them , I strongly urge them to. I am a painter as well as a knitter and find Felicia Ford such an amazing inspiration! I love your vlogs too, very informational and useful. Thank you!
WOW, I so enjoyed your enthusiasm!!! It is GREAT you chose books with research and history along with beautiful photography and or course charts and patterns! I can not wait to get some of these from the local library until I can get my own. I do agree with another viewer Alice Starmore book of Fair Isle knitting could be included here. I do think you did an amazing job and could not have been easy choosing which ones to show. THANK YOU for a classy and informative video.
Haha, thanks! I finally got it put up a few weeks ago! I teach a workshop on traditional mittens from different northern European countries and students choose between four mini-mittens to work up to try out the techniques in class. It's a fun thing to do if you make all four :)
Thank you Dianna. Great book review and especially pleased to hear about knitsonik who’s title has intrigued me for some time but I was reluctant to spend the money until I knew more about the content. I’m definitely keen now.
Thanks for sharing this. I can't wait for that Norwegian book on mittens to come out in english. I just can't justify the price with it in another language. You also helped me see more value in some of the other books you have, that I've been curious about. Thanks!
I am new to knitting and have been wanting to do multi colored sweater. The ones I have found so far are not like urs. The sweater you are wearing is beautiful do you have a video on how to do the color work like that. Its rounded on the shoulders and I've been trying to figure out how you get it that way
Sounds like you're looking for colorwork sweaters with a round yoke construction! Also known as stranded yokes. There's a link in the video description to this particular sweater pattern, but if you haven't already joined Ravelry (a knitting website with a wonderful, searchable large pattern database) I'd highly recommend you do! You can use the Ravelry search function to look for sweaters that meet those criteria, for example: pullover, stranded, circular yoke
I would like to add Saltwater Mittens by Christine Legrow & Shirley A. Scott. This is a labour of love by 2 women who have preserved the Newfoundland mitten tradition.
Awesome video and suggestions of books. I would like to add "Mittens from Around Norway" by Nina Granlund Saether who just had her book published in English, though I'm sure you know of it already but for other viewers, it's also a great book. I am especially interested in the book "Poems by Colour", having lived in Bohuslan in my younger years.
This was very interesting even though I am not into knitting colorwork in general. Do you know if the lace cardigan from Susan Crawford's book is available?
You have no idea how much I enjoy this video! I will purchase some of this books. Thanks so much for all this wonderful information. The more I get into the knitting word the more I want to learn, and I had no idea how many books and history this beautiful art has. Lots of love and thanks again.
You might mean mainland Europe, but if the UK will do, Ysolda carries it: ysolda.com/products/alterknit Or you could order from BookDepository, which does free worldwide shipping: www.bookdepository.com/AlterKnit-Stitch-Dictionary-Andrea-Rangel/9781632505538

This was beyond an excellent review of colorwork books. I own several of the books you mentioned and I love them for colorwork resources

I've been browsing Waterstones and I found Alice's book thank you for the recommendation, They don't have any of Marie Wallens books.
You have excellent taste in books ;D Only spotted one book that I don't own (though I have borrowed it at the library) :p
This was really fun to watch. I'm afraid that having watched it will result in a rather expensive book buying spree!

I love Susan's book. Just an overwhelmingly informative book. Totally understood IMO. Thank you for doing this.
Excellent review! You are very well-spoken and I look forward to more videos 😊
Thank you....simply loved your selection and feeling most inspired to try creating my own color work knit motifs!

I'm so glad to hear that!
Love the book reviews! Im also interested in knowing more about the kitty wall hanging. Is that a knitted work?
I must replicate your book selections...I only have 2 of the books you mention. Thank you for another wonderful episode!

I hope the wait isn't too long! I'll certainly be posting about it online once there's more concrete news.
Wonderful explanation of a very well curated personal library! Thank you! Rachel
Thank you for this incredible list of wonderful books! I will share this video with my stranded knitting students in the future.
I really enjoy your episodes, Dianna! They’re very informative. I’m also having lots of fun knitting your Hearth Slippers!

Excellent podcast. Really enjoyed your book reviews. Thank you.
Thank you. Also, can you direct me to the the pattern of the sweater you're wearing? ❤
It's called Lyngen!
Thank you for the information. Definitely will add some of these to my list.
Thank you for such a wonderful video!
This was very interesting even though I am not into knitting colorwork in general. Do you know if the lace cardigan from Susan Crawford's book is available?
The patterns in the Vintage Shetland Project are only available in the book!
Among colorwork stitch dictionaries, I like Kazekobo's Favorite Patterns too!
That's a good one!
Love love this video - thank you .
100% Linka Neumann’s book(s) Villmarksgensere! Modern norwegian knits inspired by the norwegian nature as well as indiginous culture
You have no idea how much I enjoy this video! I will purchase some of this books. Thanks so much for all this wonderful information. The more I get into the knitting word the more I want to learn, and I had no idea how many books and history this beautiful art has. Lots of love and thanks again.
