ONE EASY LICK that sounds SUPER FAST on the DRUMS
The power of playing slow is real, I remember the first time my friend who plays the drums told me to play to a BPM of 30. Absolutely broke me hahah but has brought me a long way in terms of my quality. Not saying play at 30BPM, but practice and ace it slow and then progress. Thanks Ryan!
So true^ no problems, thanks for watching!
Do the fingers have to be in touch with the stick all the time?
When I play my fingers are in contact with the stick for roughly 90% of the motion, that last 10% or so is when the tip of the stick hits the drum head and for that small portion the bottom end of the stick loses contact with the fingers, then immediately bounces back to the fingers for the next stroke. Hope that helps!
Thanks 👍
Thanks for watching!
Crazy vid , this the drum video we want 💪
Thank you! Cheers for watching :)
The name "better drumming" now applies to me... Good stuff, thanks for this!
Thanks for the kind words! Appreciate it!
Love this! Great ideas here!
Thanks for watching!
Great video! To the point, no excessive talking. Great job! You got a subscriber!
I appreciate the very kind feedback! Thanks for watching and subscribing!
Hey man at the beginning of the video you are in German grip and then you teach the technique in French grip for the rest of the vid. Is there any change in technique between German and French?
Great question! I find the movement to be similar between grips with German grip playing more into the palm of your hand and French grip playing more towards yourself/towards your body. Practising both grips with help the other! Hope this helps!
@@BetterDrummingthank you!
@shaneoconnell9816 No problems! Thanks for watching :)
I'm improving daily thanks to you, Ryan! 💪
Glad to hear! Thanks @JaydenBlockley!
What a great video! Among the household things I use in my drumset are kitchen towels over the toms to get that Ringo sound!
@GolddenWaffles Glad you enjoyed it!Kitchen towels on the Tom is a great one! Thanks for watching!
Love this! Great ideas man!

The homemade sizzle hack is AWESOME!!!
Glad you found it helpful :) Thanks for watching!
I have learned so much! I am a better drummer already, thank you, Better Drumming! Personally I like to put my Ryan on the drums, instantly gives a great sound. Also pillows apparently
Thanks @MLRuubz! A pillow inside the bass drum is a good one!
Good stuff!
Thanks for watching!
What is the top speed for single strokes with this technique!😊
@@LukeTang-t8l The sky is the limit! My max is about 210-220bpm or so atm doing 16th notes with both hands, best of luck with it!
@@BetterDrumming Thank you! I finally got up to 200 bpm
@user-jh8ov8pi3l congrats! That’s great :)
Thank you so much for sharing this . I could use all the tips that I can get. From a begginner drummer in Dallas TX USA >(^.^)<
Thanks for watching! Glad you found it useful!
Hey man, i watched your finger technique video a year ago and got some time to get back into practicing drums now. I love your approach and im very happy to see you shifting towards more conceptual stuff aswell. What i wanted to know or what i have been wondering is, how to improve vocabulary and how to really get creative with it, as i find myself mainly using the same 5-10 stickeings whenever i approach a drum fill. Improvising whilst staying in the pocket is another big challenge for me. I know this might come late and ill definetely chekc out your videos. Just wanted to give you some ideas and wishes from an active audience member. :) Cheers for all your awesome content ! 💯
Hi @jakobwayne8374, thank you for checking out my videos I really appreciate it! These are some great ideas for videos and definitely aligns with the content I’m planning on creating! Thank you so much for your input, super valuable, I really appreciate it, and will be posting more content soon!
@jakobwayne8374 I just released a video discussing fills and how to improve vocabulary! I hope you find it helpful :)
Nice video!
Thanks for watching!
well that was excellent. cheers ;-)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you for the kind words and for checking out the video! Have a great day :)
What's the most effective one for rock/metal?
Depends what your goal is, I would recommend having a go at heels down and heels up first and go from there :)
Subi markets dream setup 😍
Right!? Thanks for watching :)
Love it! That tiny custom ride has such a sick tone!
Thank you! Cheers for watching :)
Great video, and love seeing the mini kit in action. Keep up the amazing work Ryan!
Thanks again for building it! Love it! Thanks for watching :)

Thanks for watching!
Okay great
Thanks for watching!
Great lesson Ryan, these 4 are definitely a must know for every drummer starting out! Your explanation and demonstration of each variation are super clear too, thanks for the great lesson!
Thank you very much! Really appreciate it!
uncommon drum strokes
bruh i can only do this with my right hand, my left hand’s fingers r like connected to my wrist😭
Keep at it! It can take awhile to get used to, try to get single notes with your left hand starting slowly, then build it up from there, hope this helps! Happy practising!
❗
Thanks for watching! :)

It looks like your thumb positioning changes from when you first introduce the strokes and from when you are using all of your fingers. I feel like my thumb is farther away from my hand than yours is.
Great point, my thumb is evenly spaced with my pointer finger when isolating that exercise, when I use all fingers my thumb is about halfway between the pointer and middle finger, almost making a small triangle between the 3. Hope this helps!
@@BetterDrummingthanks so much!! I found what works best for me is thinking of a diagonal pull with my fingers. It helps me relax. Again thanks alot!
That’s great to hear! No problems at all, thanks again for watching!
Thanks for the great tips, Ryan! Still working on #3 😂
Thanks for the kind words, me too!
This is absolutely my favourite practice video, i haven’t even begun following along and i can already tell the topics i need to improve and you explain thoroughly and more importantly in a way i can understand and how i can improve these grey areas, until now ive never watched a lesson and thought “hmm, you know maybe i can do this” but now i know i can get back onto my pad and after a rewatch of this ill be deep in the practice mindset, i 1000% reccomend this man ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thank you for the very kind words! Stoked you enjoyed it and found it useful! Happy practising :)
Special thanks for PDF of the exercises, it's very helpful.
No problems! Glad you found it helpful :)
Ok,, I’ll watch your other videos but you’re not going to be playing the french grip on the set- I see how practicing this will build some strength and intelligence in the fingers- but what I’m really wanting to see is finger control in the American/German grip orientation- I have seen B. Cobham use french grip to play very fast singles on the snare but he immediately shifts back to American grip for general use--
Also I would point out --Watch Emanuelle Caplette’s 2 snare Solos on utube. In one of them she plays absolutely Blisteringly Fast singles and definitely using “ American Grip” and this is Very Early in her career.
Thanks for watching! I agree French/American/German can each be used for different situations depending what is needed! I watched Emmanuelle Caplette’s snare solo, incredible! Thanks for the recommendation!
This fellow really is an excellent drumming teacher. One of the best on UA-cam for sure
Thank you for the very kind words! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Great video! Thanks 👍
Thank you for watching!
Your index finger looks engaged in every part of the exercise. I can't see if that's what's actually happening. Are you actually keeping the index finger off when you're going through each other finger?
Thanks for watching! Yes, my index finger and thumb always acts as the main point of contact, even when the other fingers are playing one at a time. Happy practising :)
Ryan, my compliments to your clear instructions! I was looking for some videos how to perfect my steadiness. This way of practising is the answer! Undo yourself of flams starting at a slow tempo is the basic for a clean and steady rhythm. Not only usefull for learning the samba, but all kind of rhythms. I realize a have to get back to the basics and increase tempo at a slower speed. Thank you so much!
Thank you kindly Paul! Best of luck with your practise :) thanks for watching!
Very clear and easy to understand. The slow-motion clips are extremely helpful. Thank you !
Thank you! Glad you found it useful :)
Good lesson!❤ You have a really calm voice you’re drumming technique is amazing! Keep up the good work!❤️
Thank you very much for the kind words! Glad you enjoyed it :)
