The last bit was a callback, too. @@samanthancontent Eh, I don't really get that. They've always struck me as more...brother-and-sister than potential romantic partners. Weird best friends.
The oddest thing this season is Boimler being immune to any form of seduction. on the raisin farm, he deflected obvious flirts like a chad...and here instead of being tempted by sex, he is tempted by recognition. While his friends deepest desires are sexual, Boimler just wants someone to think he is worthy. It is sweet, and a bit sad.
boimler wants to be a legend like other starfleet legends like archer, picard, kirk, sisko, etc. basically who doesn't want to be the hero or sueprhero where you get a ticker tape parade down madison avenue.
I feel like they kinda nodded to his lack of interest/obliviousness to sex in the previous episode, too, because I can't think of any other reason why they'd elect to have a whole scene of him having a conversation with Tendi while she sits in his bunk in nothing but a towel except for him to not at all react to it.
@@posindustries The reason is, nudity isn’t inherently sexual. They were able to chat the same way two guys in a locker room would be able to. Because Trek is egalitarian.
I understood that the orbs showed the latest fantasy and later nightmare. If it were not so, Mariner and Rutheford would have seen other people they were attracted to, in time, and Boimler would have seen that lt.Barbara he had dated last season, the one Mariner suspected had bad intentions.
I don't know why but the image of Mariner blushing about her crush being exposed is probably one of the most adorably funny things to come out of Lower Decks.

Interestingly, this scene pretty much clinches that there is no romantic tension between Mariner and Boimler. They are just friends. When he sees Mariner has a thing for Jennifer, far from being jealous, he thinks it's adorable. I am relieved. I don't ever want to see Mariner and Boimler hook up. That'd be awful.
Now Tendi and Rutherford, on the other hand, I would love to see get together. @@riderfanprime8393 What @pendrake40 said. Mariner's love-hate crush turned regular crush on Jennifer is quite a nice funny and cute sub-plot. Can't blame her for crushing though, Jennifer looks gorgeous. 👍 I don't know why, but "siren-type creature trying to charm cast members" is one of the potential plots for an episode of a series that I kinda enjoy. In a bikini, and in a serious-but-sweet part of their relationship. It scares Mariner that she wants that, because how can she keep up the rebel-without-a-cause image if she has a stable relationship? It’s an odd thing to be concerned about, but it’s a revealing layer of her personality.

Well, I'm glad that Mariner has a healthy interest for once ! Jennifer is calm, smart and has saved her life. Mariner told Tendi she is pan-sexual and was interested in bad beings ( bad girls, bad boys, bad multi-gender, etc) and we all know that relationships with bad beings rarely end well. A, she is also attracted to Ransom, who has issues, but is not bad, either. Boimler is right she should return to therapy, she is too damaged still, and damaged people destroy their relationships. What happened to her to make a valedictorian turn into a rebel?! How did she get into a klingon prison fighting a yeti for her shoes?! She has lots of unadressed trauma. I'm surprized Rutheford 's fantasy is not Tendi, but well... And I am glad that Boimler got over his girlfriend lt. Barbara from last season. Stevens said his fantasy was a giant ham sandwich. Lol, I'm on a diet and I have the same fantasy, lol. Ransom was smart enough to avoid the orbs, they would have shown Mariner... or her mother, captain Carol. He goes out of his way to please her, although she can't promote him further, so he either has mommy issues, or is attracted to her. 😁 I would rather face a Borg cube than those orbs, in public. I don't want anyone to see my fantasies and fears. A, and I am very curious what Tendi would have revealed to the orbs ...
I think it'd be pretty interesting if Mariner's problems didn't have a specific root. I think in real life, it's possible to develop these kinds of negative traits even without being able to point at one or two specific things and saying "here's where it all went wrong." But that mindset, focusing on smaller problems and treating them like the cause of the rest, can be useful not only for real actual mental therapy but is also an effective storytelling tool where you can dedicate an episode or two to revisiting past events. Explaining exactly why things were the way they were in ep1 is a great way to get your audience reengaged with your story, encourages them to go back and rewatch, and makes them feel smarter for seeing connections. But while those concepts are nice in their places of healing and entertaining people, I think the idea that you NEED some big traumatic event to have trauma symptoms (or at least to need therapy) is super harmful to millions of people who should at least see a therapist annually but think "meh I've got nothing worth complaining about." I think it'd feel cheap if it turned out Mariner had actually been through something truly horrible before ep 1 since the show is supposedly about some of the more mundane parts of the universe. Maybe she just decided she didn't like the self image she had of being valedictorian. Maybe she felt pressure from her parents to keep being the best and decided to show them she would do what she wanted. Or maybe it's even more mundane than that--sometimes people just start feeling depressed for literally no reason at all other than Brain Chemistry.
Side note, I always thought Troi was Creepy! Q was right about her! How rude, going around telling everyone in the room your private thoughts and feelings! 😡
There is a running theory that she was one of the kids on the Enterprise, hence why her and her mother know Riker. She is traumatize by the weekly sci-fi shenanagans that happend there.
@@anothertarnishedone5960 Hm, I think he postponed it, not ruined it. Last we see them in season 3 finale, she literally climbed on him, but with a vengeful face. I think she's still furious he had sent her to the brig with the sleeves pretext, instead of kissing her. 😁 Their sickbay scene was hilarious. I think he got scared ( he later mentioned having violent ex-es and was probably trying to make healthier choices) and sent her to the brig with the pretext of sleeves. Later, even after her parents gave him full power over her, he never noticed the sleeves again and she kept them up. She also reacted violently to his rejection, despite the brig being " her favorite place" and promised to " dace in his blood ". 😂 Ironically, this unhinged reaction made him more attracted to her. Then she bragged to her visiting captain friend Ramsey that she had put a scorpion in his bed that nearly killed him, and he didn't report or punished her for that. He's either too forgiving or he has feelings for her. Throughout the series they both tried to hide their attraction to each other because they think it's inappropriate, but repressed things tend to grow stronger, that's why he is scared she is back in the season 3 finale. Anyway, she can't help herself to tell her friends how she went out of her way to upset or confront him ever since the first episode, bumps into him intentionally (she did it with Jennifer too, she has patterns), drinks from his glass (when she tells him, Shax and Billups about her mother's secret promotion), shows jealousy to Churrolivia 😂, gets angry when she praised him for saving the engineers from the volcano people ,but he thought she was not sincere, although she was, etc. He forgave her a lot and only punished her as a last resort or that only time when he got scared of involving himself with another violent woman. I was surprised he did her the favor of removing Boimler from a dangerous mission just because she came smiling to him and asked him a favor, using his given name Jack. A, and when her mother kicked her out of the ship, he weakly tried to postpone the captain 's decision, despite thinking her guilty, which is the most anyone on the ship had done for her, including her friends and Jennifer. Jen really betrayed her there. A, even when he was struck with strange energies ,while rushing to save her, and became god-like, he never punished her, despite reading in her mind that she thought him stupid. He even tried to eat the ship, lol, but never touched her. He can't help bragging when she's around, doing gym moves and giving personal info in their talks, like showing her a photo of his friends ,while talking about Boimler 's clone's death. Now that she promised to be his shadow and is set to "avenge " his control over her in season 3, and he is rightly scared of what she would do, I bet they will have many more funny interactions.
I wonder what would these orbs do to the vulcans with them in control at all times, or better yet how would klingons react to these things with there always wanting combat
Vulcan: "See with my control of emotions nothing can tempt me" Vulcan desire: "I do LIKE this strawberry ice cream, it makes me FEEL quite happy." Vulcan:"........This is concerning."
Hm, depends. Regular Vulcans :" Fascinating!" Orb transforms into something boring. Vulcans like T'Lyn: orb transforms into a klingon captain. 😁 A, and for klingons, for regular klingons , orb transforms into other klingons, prizes, etc, and for that klingon who became captain from enseign: orb transforms into T'Lyn.😁 They both showed appreciation for each other 's culture, so I would not be surprized if their fantasies are each other. I would love for them to meet! 😃

The pair had been interacting since [LD s01], albeit antagonistically. It was in the denouement of *[LD 2x10 - "First First Contact]* where the two admitted a mutual attraction to the other, but were afraid/intimidated by the other, thus hiding/denying behind a facade of antagonism. The denouement ends with Mariner taking Jennifer by the hand/arm and bringing Jennifer to the join the rest of the LD quartet at their table, still intimately holding onto Jennifer in front of the LD quartet. 5.) *_Conclusion(s)_** ~* Because of the privatized, poorly regulated, and often frustrating nature(s) of Subscription Streaming Channels, ST:LD is not as widely/publicly available for viewing. - a.) Thus, it is understandable that many might be confused &/or ignorant (by circumstance) to where the [Mariner + Jennifer] angle came from; even though there was indeed set-up for the pairing across [LD s01-02]. - b.) Likewise, the ST:LD writers are smart in keeping the [Mariner + Jennifer] relationship as a side-issue, rather than pushing/forcing it into the spotlight. Not overtly &/or constantly throwing Mariner's pan-sexual nature &/or romantic relationships into the faces of the Audience is a mark of _Quality Writing._ Hope this helps explain/clarify things. *:)*

But while those concepts are nice in their places of healing and entertaining people, I think the idea that you NEED some big traumatic event to have trauma symptoms (or at least to need therapy) is super harmful to millions of people who should at least see a therapist annually but think "meh I've got nothing worth complaining about."
I think it'd feel cheap if it turned out Mariner had actually been through something truly horrible before ep 1 since the show is supposedly about some of the more mundane parts of the universe.

*RE: **_Mariner's Sexual Preferences_** ~* Since there have been quite a few Comments/Replies with confusion &/or ignorance over Beckett Mariner's (Tawny Newsome) sexual preferences and relationship with Jennifer Sh'reyan (Lauren Lapkus), here is a summary to help explain/clarify the issue... *:)*
1.) *_Pan-, not Bi-_** ~* To be accurate/correct, Mariner is *PAN-sexual,* not just bi-sexual; meaning Mariner can be attracted to male, female, multi-gender, non-human gender, and even genderless (more on the last below). This is appropriate given the diverse nature(s) of the ST-'verse. *;)*
2.) *_[LD season 01]_** ~* Early in [LD s01], both the ST:LD producers and Newsome openly stated in interviews that Mariner was *_pan-sexual,_* for all the reason(s) given above, possibly a few more reasons I may have missed.
3.) *_[LD 2x03 - "We'll Always Have Tom Paris"]_** ~* Mariner's pan-sexual nature was made _'Alpha'_ (official) Canon, when Mariner and Tendi (Noel Wells) made a covert side-trip to an Orion Pirate Outpost to try to have Dr. T'Ana's broken scratching post repaired...
- [Mariner]: Tendi! You gotta warn me if we're gonna be meeting up with a sexy bad boy, that's my type. Well, one of my types.
- [Tendi]: You have a thing for bad boys?
- [Mariner]: Oh, I'm *_always_* dating Bad Boys. Bad Girls, Bad Gender-non-binary Babes, Ruthless Alien Masterminds, Bad Bynars...
And just to cover FAQ base, Bynars are a genderless race of binary-based (binary math, not gender) cyborgs, from *[TNG 1x15 - "11001001"].* Thus reinforcing Mariner's pan-sexual nature.
4.) *_Not Unexpected_** ~* The [Mariner + Jennifer] pairing was nothing unexpected or spontaneously sprung-upon Audiences, either.
Not overtly &/or constantly throwing Mariner's pan-sexual nature &/or romantic relationships into the faces of the Audience is a mark of _Quality Writing._
Hope this helps explain/clarify things. *:)*
"Pan-, not Bi- ~ To be accurate/correct, Mariner is PAN-sexual, not just bi-sexual; meaning Mariner can be attracted to male, female, multi-gender, non-human gender, and even genderless (more on the last below). This is appropriate given the diverse nature(s) of the ST-'verse. ;)"
Nah you can also ID as bi and do all that. She hasn't used a specific term on screen so either is accurate.
@@posindustries If you're doing all that, you're not just "bi." That would be like calling a polyglot merely bilingual. Words have meanings. She would not use a specific term on screen because that would not be appropriate to the diverse nature(s) of the ST-'verse. When it's normal for people to have sex with aliens, "bi" is the term for an extremely limited point of view.
Well Jennifer goes in the picture Andorians have 4 sexes
For further examples see: Harkness, Captain John and Pelton, Craig, Dean of Greendale College.
@@posindustries ~ To further expand upon *[@Kirk Darling]'s* point... *:)*
1. *_Bi-sexuality..._*
- a.) *Etymology ('Bi-') ~* From Latin _'bis'_ ("twice") or Latin _'bīnus'_ ("double"), also from _'duis'_ ("twice"), from _'duo'_ ("two").
- b.) *Definition ~* Bisexuality is romantic attraction, sexual attraction, or sexual behavior toward males and females, or to both concurrently.
2. *_Pan-sexuality..._*
- a.) *Etymology ('Pan-') ~* A prefix from the Greek _'πᾶν' ("pan"),_ meaning "all", "of everything", or "involving all members" of a group.
- b.) *Definition ~* Pansexuality is sexual, romantic, or emotional attraction towards people regardless of their sex or gender identity. Pansexual people may refer to themselves as _'gender-blind',_ asserting that gender and sex are not determining factors in their romantic or sexual attraction to others.
3. *_Accurate & Correct_** ~* As (correctly) pointed out by *[@Kirk Darling],* the Science Fiction diverse nature of the ST-'verse cannot (should not) be limited to binary genders. By that same measure, it is also important to use the accurate/correct labels/terms too, in describing such things, even if not directly/overtly stated on-screen. *;)*

Who knows🤷♂️
But it’s actually so cute to see mariner blush for her crush 😻
well, you certainly called it
I was honestly expecting Rutherford's sexual desire to be tendi. You know considering he used to have a huge crush on her before he lost all his memories.
That or that freaky yellow triangular tutorial program he made as a nightmare.
Memories aren't truly forgotten. Even if Rutherford's brain is part machine. The part that's organic still has his old memories that were lost buried deep within his subconscious.
I dn't know for sure that he was a crush on her in a way different from what he has with Billups.
Ensign Boilmer is a natural passenger princess
The fact that they canonised my favourite ship, even though the series came out long before I started watching, really made my day
RW:oh man i adore and find it funny that when people say “Oh,look who’s blushing 😊 “ and they try to hide and deny it too 😁 it’s just so adorable 😊
Not surprised where the most replayed part of the video is. I love how youtube pretty much called everyone out on this video as pervs. now to start at 1:48 for no reason.
Like you?

*Chode Micblob from Tripping the rift:* WOAH!!! Girl on girl! How about That? 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
OH NO, NOT A HOT FANTASY INVOLVING THE WARP CORE!!!!
Mariner really hates her feelings XD
Pretty sure that was flirting from the other team too, not competition
Is anyone ignoring the face that Mariner has a crush for Jennifer. I haven’t seen this show, But i’m kinda getting the idea of mariner having a total Crush on Jennifer. I think it’s cute and sweet.
They had a sorta hate thing going for a while but after the season 2 finale they patched things up and really clicked. Seems like they hooked up.
@@Igarappappa you mean hooked up? as in they had sex hooked up and a different type of hook up?

I admit, Boimler has nice taste in hover bikes. :D
I would have absolutely gone to look at some warp cores, in a heartbeat...
This may be the best ship in Star Trek history.
Edit: Apparently there is confusion. I didn't mean the Cerritos is the best literal ship; I was referring to Mariner being shipped with Jennifer.
Are you crazy?
@@samanthancontent no, no, there maybe some truth to this. Yes, the Enterprise has done some crazy things that ultimately effected the 'verse. But I would say that when it comes to fun, there's hanging with gang and then there's "oh God, oh God, we're all going to die" fun. The other hero ships and crews tend toward the latter, the Cerritos toward the former... Also, it is an opinion, take that as you will. :)

A great scene. It's more Star Trek than the other shows. 🖖
VERY 😆 FUNNY Lower Decks make me laugh and smile everytime I watch it. I think the Jennifer character is great for a mistake name drop TURNED OUT to be a fan favourite
So Mariner wants to take Jen and Leah to the warp core?!😏
0:47 "Was there a thing with time-travel? Have we done a time-travel thing?"
Well yes, but not yet.
Mariner Becket is such a vibe.
I kind of liked how the fantasies started interacting with each other right at the end, makes me wonder if they're grasping at straws or if Mariner has developed a slight fetish for warp cores because she's been hanging out with Rutherford for so long
What lovely space shenanigans !
This show is obviously made by people who love both Star Trek and animation-they've captured the former's positivity in a way that's been missing from the franchise for over 20 years, and they've gone from Rick and Morty knockoff animation to having some decent spring, stretch, and squash in their characters which R&M still generally lacks.
generally lacks?? lol not true plus we are comparing 5 plus seasons to this. plus lower decks season 1 was not good

is the reason why Tendi isn't Rutherford's fantasy is because she is his reality?
*@targetseeker ~* Rutherford's budding romantic interest in Tendi was back in [LD season 01]. However, this was lost when Rutherford suffered critical brain damage/trauma in the *[LD 1x10 - "No Small Parts"]* season finale, and lost months of memories as a result (which included all memories of Tendi).
Since then however, meaning [LD s02+] onward, Rutherford has rebuilt his close relationship with Tendi, but has not _'clicked'_ to any romantic (re-)interest in Tendi (yet).
And just to cover bases, it is unlikely that such romantic (re-)interest will happen with [LD s03], not with the *Dark* Foreshadowing behind Rutherford's cybernetic implants from *[LD 2x10 - "First First Contact"].* Perhaps in [LD s04]... *;)*
Hope this helps explain/clarify. *:)*
@@pendrake40 i know about the memory wipe and the ship teases, just saying unlike Leah (far away and more of a career admiration) Tendi's within arm's reach and Rutherford isn't in a hurry to be in a relationship with her (even if they don't become a couple, he's perfectly fine being her friend) so it didn't count as a fantasy (unlike Boimler and Mariner's).
I thought it was a Trill ensign named Barnes that Rutherford had the romantic interest in.
@@StLouisBatman ~ Partly correct. For a Timeline for the Barnes and Rutherford relationship...
1. *[LD 1x01 - "Second Contact"] ~* Engineering-division Ensign Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) had gone on two (2) dates with Operations-division Ensign Barnes, a NON-joined Trill (Jessica McKenna). However, despite having the metaphorical "chemistry" between them, Rutherford ultimately decided to not romantically pursue Barnes further.
2. *[LD 2x01 - "Strange Energies"] ~* After Rutherford's critical head/brain injuries of *[LD 1x10 - "No Small Parts"],* which resulted in Rutherford losing roughly a year's worth of memories, Rutherford went on +2 more dates with Barnes (dates total = 04). The 'catch' being that Rutherford *_did not remember_* the first two (2) dates; however, Barnes understood this and was amicable to a "reboot" of their dating. In the end of [LD 2x01], Rutherford again declined to romantically pursue Barnes further, partly due to Tendi's insistence (which of course, [Rutherford + Tendi] 'shipper fans leapt upon). Fortunately, Barnes also understood that Rutherford was still in-process of recovering his memories and brain damage, so again remained cordial/friendly with Rutherford.
3. *[LD 3x05 - "Reflections"] ~* Now, with the past-Rutherford persona having seriously insulted Barnes (literally having made Barnes cry), while in control of present-Rutherford's body, it is unknown (as of [LD 3x05]) whether that was the final death knell of any further romantic opportunities between Rutherford and Barnes.
4. *_Fun Trivia_** ~* The lovely Jessica McKenna also performs as the USS Cerritos Computer-voice for ST:LD. So it is unlikely McKenna, and thus Barnes, will be going anywhere, anytime soon. At least, not for [LD seasons 03-04]. *;)*
Hope this helps explain/clarify. *:)*
@@pendrake40 I remember Red Rutherford making Barnes cry. The question about her spots must’ve been abusive. And I didn’t even know of the “shipping” of Tendi and Rutherford.
After watching this episode expecting it to be even stranger than it actually, a part of me started to worry that all the ‘controversy’ and other reasons for the discussion videos on the episode I’ve seen pop up were, in truth, due to the suggestion of Mariner being in a same-sex relationship.
1:53 man she looks nice 😊😍🥰🥰😍😍🥰🥰
Yeah... I would love to see those three girls checking my Warp Core :D
This show is such a great little surprise. I never would have imagined "Adult Swim Star Trek" could work, but when I put on the first episode out of morbid curiosity at what an embarrassment it surely must be I ended up binging the whole season in one sitting. Eagerly wait for every new season now.
Sounds very familiar.
Truly out of all the concepts modern Trek has thrown out, this would've been the one I would've betteed on crashing and burning but it worked so much better than anyone expected.

I appreciate that her fantasy version of Jennifer IS into labels.
Jennifer seducing her, *Not embarrassed*
Jennifer labeling and inferring a healthy relationship *Embarrassing*
Mariner really just wants to look like a bad girl but her fantasy is "getting tied down" in a relationship lol.
@@LordNinja109 I think it really is just the labels that are scaring her. Think about it.
Brilliant prodigy cadet, means: not allowed to fail ever.
F-up ensign: cannot succeed, ever.
These are just the obvious examples. But this is all indicative of Mariner's whole thing.
Which knowing Star Trek, can probably all be tied back to Wolf 359; the source of 90% of Alpha Quadrant trauma.
@@tyrant-den884 I'd say, given her age, it has more to do with the Dominion War

The fantasies appear out of nowhere, except for Boimler's. Wonder if there will be a call-back to how he turned down the big opportunity of his career?
1:55 Ooh girl you nasty
Did they get Susan Gibney for this?
*@neonhomer ~* Correct. The false Dr. Leah Brahms in this *[LD 3x03]* episode is voiced by Susan Gibney, who played the hologram Brahms *[TNG 3x06 - "Booby Trap"]* and (physically-)real Dr. Brahams *[TNG 4x16 - "Galaxy's Child"].*
ST:LD has been very good on getting the original actors across ST-series to reprise their roles, no matter how minor the roles. That is one of the reasons ST:LD has enjoyed such solid success among the older ST-fanbase/-nerds. *;)*
