  • The Big Lick is only possible through the abuse of horses, and some of our staff protested in a neighboring town. Those who are willing to abuse animals have no problem abusing humans, and you can watch along as our staff experience yelling, cursing, threats, obscene gestures, and more as they protested this institutionalized cruelty.
That's not all that happened, Doc was at the shelter, horses found their forever homes, our team heads out to award the $10,000 Full Circle of Life grant and 6 months of Mentoring for Horse Rescue Heroes Seasons 2 (released January 2022) and a lot more. Don't miss a minute of this episode of Horse Shelter Heroes!

I had a cousin who owned a purebred Tennessee Walker, never showed him! I rode him a few times...their NATURAL gait is so smooth, you just float, and it's beautiful to watch too !! The TW register should also be refusing to register a "big lick" horse, and kick the people out of membership that do that to a horse!! If someone doesn't do something, they are going to ruin the natural gait, and proof no TW left!!!

I’m pretty sure this started in the 70s. They actually put heavy objects inside of the stacks to make the horses lift higher. They also break the tendons in their tails and then tie their tails into knots so that their tails stand out like that. Whoever invented this must’ve been on some serious cocktail of drugs. They put bungee cords on a little two-year-old falls legs and then proceeded to ride them. There are some good videos by Diana or Dianne, not sure exactly. But she is very informative and is also doing her best to try and stop this.

@@symplicitythearabianmare242 The rules say you aren't supposed to sore, but unfortunately the equestrian industry is extremely unregulated. They say they do inspections. That's a lie. People pay off vets at the inspections or get away with it because they personally know the vet. It's still happening and there is no making it seem like it's getting better because it's not. They're just saying whatever they need to say or doing whatever they need to do to make the activists shut up about it. Especially in places like Tennessee, as she has mentioned, there are almost no animal facilities in Tennessee, meaning that people can get away with so much more. Hence why horses are still getting sold off for slaughter there by the dozens.

I noticed the crouching position of the rear of the horses when they start running them around the ring. It reminds me of the German Shepherds who were bred with defects in their hips to get the low look in their rears. The Shepherds wind up needing hip replacements at age eight or so. What happens to the hip joints of the Big Lick horses?
Perhaps the owners and trainers need a few rounds in the ring with the "stacks and chains" .... and forced to try to prance with their tails aimed at the ground. How much can a horse take in this condition? It is heart breaking and most probably a good thing I was not with you when the tub of lard started yelling and showing his IQ fingers to the camera. I would have to say what my tongue could not keep quiet .... and then ask for bail money ..!

One of the mares in the last rescue was apparently a Big Lick horse. Her hip was either broken or out. I believe they had to euthanize her. That crouch is horrible, both in the Big Lick and German Shepherds. You notice the riders are all crouching forward in the saddle. If they sat properly, centered, they would fall off the back of the horse. The time I saw a horse nearly fall over backward trying to turn to leave the ring, I quit going to those shows.

As an Australian, where we don't have this barbaric practice (but I'm not suggesting we don't have animal cruelty), I want to thank you for bringing this to my attention. I've already shared the horrors of the Big Lick lie with people, who are equally as devastated by this cruelty. As one of my friends said, 'Aren't horse owners meant to love their horses?' I said, 'These people don't love their horses. They only use them for their own personal gain and success. I also let her know that these horses generally spend 24 hours a day in their stalls without access to fresh air, grass underneath their feet and the freedom to move naturally.

Any pictures I ever saw of TWH doing the big lick are always taken at one spot in the movement. When the one foreleg is at it's highest. The first time I saw video of a horse doing the big lick I was sickened! There is nothing beautiful about it and I don't understand how that kind of thing get rewarded! TWH are lovely animals with a wonderful, Natural running walk that is supposed to be so smooth (I've never rode one so can't speak from experience). But they look much better when allowed to go naturally and flat shod.

I quit volunteering when I saw a horse nearly fall over backward turning to leave the arena. I couldn't stand to see them with such abnormal gait. I also do not approve of the AQHA still 'approving' of the abnormally slow trots and lopes, and 'peanut pushing' head set. I'm a Peruvian Paso fan, both because the gait is natural and because shoes of any kind are forbidden at shows. Big Lick is the gooniest walk I've ever seen. I have no idea what the appeal is. I've seen video of Elvis on Bear and that horse had a beautiful way of moving. I just don't get it: if horses have natural movement, why not let it be natural? It makes no sense to me, and to have such an ugly walk that took abuse to get there is insane.

When I worked for a government agency, we rode Tennessee Walkers as trail horses. They don’t NEED to be made to perform that absolutely UGLY thing they call a gait because their natural gait is so smooth and beautiful! I think of the people where I live who used to show horses like that, and even then it made me angry; and that’s been years ago. I’m a native Tennessean, and not all of us are for that terrible, unnatural agony they do to horses. It’s in the same league as dog and chicken fighting and needs to be outlawed. Thanks for standing up for the horses. I say this in honor of all the wonderful Tennessee Walking horses that served as our trail horses. God bless.

( I don’t know if the magazine subscription was donated but I think it probably was , the library didn’t have a big budge to spend on a magazine like that)
I remember looking at this and thinking how ugly this gait was…But this shows how accepted this is and how getting this magazine onto school libraries shows that the TWH big lick was trying to make young people believe this is acceptable and normal. The TWH Big Lick is so political, as shown by the number of law enforcement people at these shows…

Once I figured out what you were saying, ie big lick? I found it on Google search, and am mortified that this is happening! I can't imagine why this is even allowed by law. These people would be in jail for this over here! I wrote a comment on the site of a big lick show video saying that this despicable treatment of these glorious animals/friends for the entertainment of not just the owners, but also the audience who come to watch tortured horses perform for their entertainment, they should be ashamed. Unimaginable. If these people think it is ok to torture horses in this way, what else would they do and think that is ok also. Thank you for your dedication to helping these fine animals and hopefully have the law changed to make big lick a criminal offence. This is extremely distressing to know that this happens from a person who would dismount my unshod horse as a teenager and walk beside him if we came across a gravelly patch, because I didn't want him to hurt his feet. God bless you for the work you do. Bravo to you all. 🙏🙏💕🇭🇲🇭🇲

Maybe they would be willing to help with this issue? Maybe someone watching will know how to reach one of them. I used to have a Tennessee Walker. To me they are the smartest and most beautiful horses. I hate to see something like this happening here in the US. Usually you see something this cruel in 3rd world countries with no regulations. I hope in my lifetime to see an end to big lick.

ginger cox ... Rodeo horses differ from "big lick" horses due to the fact that these horses are acting freely and naturally. B/L horses are tortured for weeks/months with chemicals and wraps around their pasterns, plus chains to aggravate the wicked condition. Horses lie down to alleviate the pain of standing, then they are whipped to get up...it must be stopped.

Years ago I boarded my Arab gelding at a private barn in Troutdale Or. The place was actually a Tennessee Walker show and breeding facility. I got to watch them work their show Stallion. They were educating me....they were discussing how the horse was moving. I noticed he was not exactly moving smooth in the hind end and looked to be limping! They came uncorked! After that I sat in my car untill they were done then I would ride.
The cruelty to theses horses is outrageous! The " natural gait" that Tennessee Walkers have is what should be honored! The true breed, left to move as nature intended. No horse has the bone structure or tendons to stand up under all the weights used to get that exagerrated, ugly gait.

I've never heard of Big Lick until I started watching your channel last week (I'm in the UK), and I'm absolutely horrified for those poor horses being abused and enduring so much pain. And for sport? Wtf?!?!
How could anyone force such treatment to a beautiful horse, and even worse, hold a competition for it?
I am disgusted by the owners and supporters of such a barbaric practice.
Thank you for highlighting and protesting on behalf of those poor abused animals.
I wish you had a national law that prevents such abuse and protects animals, pets and livestock like we do here in the UK.
That kind of treatment would lead to prosecution, heavy fines, jail time, and a lifetime ban on owning any animal.
We have very strict laws that mean owners can be prosecuted for not providing for an animals fundamental basic care; clean fresh water, regular and breed appropriate healthy food, and access to vet care. I do wish the US put in place laws to stop Big Lick, and all the other animal abuses you rescue those poor animals from.
You've shown some terribly emaciated animals that have been bought and moved from auction to auction by different buyers trying to "flip" to make money. Do you think these people aren't bothering to feed the animals in their care, expecting the next auction buyer to feed them? It just made me wonder as a lot of the emaciated horses I'd seen in your videos had multiple auction tags.
