- Our farrier, Garrick, started melting, and not only does he want fans, he wants fans. His hilarious antics will amuse you in this episode of Horse Shelter Heroes! Not only does Garrick take great care of the horses, Doc is also out caring for horses, the biggest horse on the property has trouble getting up, and more in this episode of Horse Shelter Heroes.

Garrik is an excellent farrier! I could honestly see that he's only as firm as he needs to be and was still kind to the horses despite the fact that he was melting

OMG! People who surrender to you are the very opposite of bad people!! In my view they are great people to acknowledge they don’t have the capacity to give the horses the care required and find a good situation for them rather than all the horrible folks who dump their horses at auctions to be prey to kill buyers and slaughter! I feel so sorry that they had to give up their horses and they obviously care what happens to them.
Oh, and Garrick should be upset at Horse Plus videographer! 😉 We don’t see as much of him as we do of Doc!
I love Doc and Farrier!! Both need groupies and a fanclub.

You can truly see how much your farrier cares for these horses, he talks a lot lol , and is not camera shy at all. That’s a plus !!!! I really am praying the Belgium gets healthy and makes a recovery ❤️🩹

I'm a huge fan of Garrick!! Imagine doing a job where you spend so much time bent over like that!! Many times he is working with horses who have not been touched in a long time and he does a great job- get him some fans!!!

I've met my share of horse shoers and Garrick is a "cool" guy despite his protestations! lol Seriously, I am always impressed with his patience and kind attitude toward the horses no matter how antsy they get. Someone get that man a fan!
Garrick is so fun to watch...His passion for his trade and his 4 legged clients, clearly shows. Cracks me as well. Best wishes to all at Horse Plus.
That happened with the Tennessee Walking horse that I purchased. Sparkler has been a "big lick" show horse. When the farrier removed the huge pad and shoes, her hoofs were so weak that he could barely trim. It took a year before Sparkler had good hoofs. I was so angry with the previous owner for putting a horse such through turmoil.
Thank goodness you saved him!!! And, that you were willing to allow him enough time to heal. God Bless!

Who can almost pass an equine anatomy test after listening to Doc? What an historical name Blackjack, he was the riderless horse in John F. Kennedy's funeral, he was saddled and in the stirrups were boots pointing backwards signifying a fallen leader.
WOW~!! I had never heard of that! wow...thanks for the history lesson.
I went to that funeral with my mother and asked her why the boots were backwards. I was almost 7 and remember being squashed by the crowds. My mother was from Kentucky and it was all very important to her. I never realized how important it would end up being to me.

Garrick is a wonderful farrier and man who genuinely cares about horses! Farriering is back breaking work, but he does it so gracefully. I wonder if his father or grandfather were also farriers. I love Blackjack! He is a beautiful horse. If I had a place for a horse, I would be at Horse Plus in a heart beat. Thanks Garrick for your great work!

My favorite parts to the videos are the actual rescues and adoptions. Like the one lady at the beginning, to see the difference in the eyes on adoption day, priceless!

50 years ago I remember watching my dad shoe our horses . Watching Garrick brought back many good memories. Then and still today I love watching it it is truly an art form and he does work magic on these horses feet. When I was little I truly believed that the horses smiled when my dad was done.
Garrik, you are the man dude !! you work miracles with these poor horses feets. its sad to see how overgrown and unkept their hooves are but you absolutely do fab work with them and treat them with much love and respect. therefore, I'm sure your fans feel love and respect for what you do !!! tx from arkansas

Yes, I have ran into dog/cat rescues that the adopting guidelines can be too much... Unfortunately they get too many dogs and cats and the funds become an issue and the rescue itself at risk.... It is truly a REAL BALANCE to run a rescue and make sure you get good, forever homes...
Almost 20 years, I'd say you have found a great balance.

Garrick, you are an excellent farrier and so gentle with the horses. You deserve lots of recognition for the work you do. That is a physically demanding job so a little cool shade and lots of cross-ventilation is not much to ask for. I am a huge fan, keep up the excellent work!

Horses aren't what I'd call a "pet". They are expensive and need appropriate facilities to ensure they don't end right back at an auction. I'm glad you screen your applicants. Hang in there and well done.
Any animal that is kept for human entertainment and not work is a pet. None of them are cheap. All of them deserve an owner who can not only afford to care for them financially but also has the necessary knowledge to do it well. To provide not only food and shelter but companionship and enrichment. That applies to all animals from the very large to the very small. If we keep them in captivity we are 100% responsible for their quality of life.
How good that is tawee, honesty is the best policy at all times.it was also good of the applicant to be honest as well. 👍

Loving these creatures is one of the most rewarding things in life. God gives us..... love it. time is almost over as we know it the 5th seal is broken.

Farriers are unsung heroes!! The knowledge and problem solving abilities they need to have, so they don't do any harm to the horses, is great and varied. They also need to know how to take care of donkey hooves which are different from horses. Garrick, the equines that are lucky enough to have you looking after their hooves would tell you, if they could, we owe our comfort and sometimes our lives to you........... Keep up the GREAT work!!!!

A good farrier ,like Garrick, can be the difference between life and death for a horse. Garrick is a true horse hero! The job is literally back breaking, sweat & tears ,hoping you don't get kicked or stepped on while trying to help the big beautiful, often frightened animals. You have thighs of steel, arms of iron and a heart of gold 💛. Thank you for doing what you do. I know it's not easy and that and the end of the day your sore, but you've done so much good, thanks for being an equine Rockstar !!!

I agree with a lot of you that without them more animals would not get the help that they need when they are rescued from the actions. I love seeing animals get the help that they need right away. All of theses people are super awesome and I hope that more people continue to donate to them so that they can continue to save animals. I get super happy to see most of the animals getting adopted and going to great homes that have had experience with the animals.
My thanks to the shoer. Being able to figure out a solution of a mess is a real talent.

I think it takes a GREAT owner to sacrifice their own feelings and surrender their horses to a good rescue. Times are tough, and our animals depend on us to make good decisions for them.

You should use the form a hoof stuff. They would keep him out of pain until his hoof could grow out. 16:20
I’ve heard of it too! But is it in the US? I’ve seen it in videos for the UK. I’d like to watch them apply it and see how it goes!
Vintage turpentine works great I used it when my mare feet was soft, just put it on the soles, not the frog and it helps with tenderness and hardens the soles also, it is messy but worth it.

Sometimes love is sacrifice. I think it shows love and compassion to surrender an animal rather than let it suffer because you're not able to take care of it's needs.

The horsemen and women who have the awareness of an animals current, and most importantly their -Future- living environments; are to be highly commended for surrendering these pieces of their hearts, to the next new family who look forward to loving them as well. It takes real wisdom, compassion, guts, and most of all; R E A L L O V E to do what you did.

It is like to give away the family members, feels guilt, pain, depression and a lot of guilt… but better to do it and let professionals to take care of horses that to leave them without help for sake of people’s ego. Thank you guys for making good choices.

In any animal community, it's always what's best for the animal. If you believe that surrendering them to a responsible shelter is best, then it is best. Nobody should judge you for surrendering. It's so hard to make that choice. I've had to do it, and i still miss him. ❤

Putting a tennis ball on the top of the ferrier stand can help with the hooves slipping off and make the horses feel like it’s not a small area for their foot to be. I recommend trying it just to see if it works out for him!
