Currently the laws allow these horses to be sold in auctions in this condition. Until that changes, this cruelty will continue. You can't send someone to jail if they didn't break the law.
Who would you jail - the original owners who sold to the auction, the auctions who send them through, the drivers who transport the horses, the kill buyers. If people didn't sell and dump in auctions, there would be no knock-on effect.
Getting banned from that auction was a good thing. I remember when everyone got excited when you rescued approx. 52 horses, that was huge back then. Now 50 horses is the average!!
Omg Tawnee, the description of what happens at slaughter is horrifying. I think that every single person that owns a horse and thinks it's ok to dump their horses at auction needs to know that. Thank you for educating people and helping these sweet babies.
Omg is right, I made the courageous move to look for undercover documentaries about the slaughter houses, I actually found one right on U tube, I made myself look although my tears were flowing and my stomach turned inside out. Watching those makes me feel good about sending a donation when I can. I saw a buy out video from the UK, the horses they were getting looked normal, not a starved one in the bunch, so in the UK there are just way too many horses especially the small and large ponies, people can't afford them so they go to ONE auction then transported by ships to eastern Europe for slaughter. It is not legal in the UK either as in the US, but there is just no way to have enough law enforcement to catch even a tiny fraction of these kill traders.
In my area of the country, Rocky Mountains, I had a terrible event where I needed to have my severely ill mare put down. She showed no signs of any issues until one morning I heard a funny noise coming from the barn. After investigating I finally figured out it was this mare. My vet was out of town, the on call vet showed up way after dark, REFUSED to "give up" on my mare. Gave her a steroid injection, left the brand new vet to take care of anything else and left. The brand new vet, drew blood for a blood panel, saying she would call in the morning and left. Next morning go out to check my mare. I could hear her roaring as she struggled to breathe, way before I got to the barn. Call my vet's office to see if they knew of any one who could come out and put her down. They didn't. The brand new vet called around noon to see how Miranda was doing, I told her I wanted her put down. SHE TOLD ME THAT I COULDN'T DO THAT! Called all the horsey friends that didn't use my vet to see if I could use another one. Called one, he refused to put down a horse that wasn't one of his clients. The upshot, the new vet was able to get in contact with my vet who was at a conference out of state (cell phones were still somewhat of a novelty). He told her that since I had had Miranda for several years, my opinion to put her down was valid. Apparently, this was also the first time new vet had tried to put a horse down. My wonderful mare ended up getting poked over and over and over again before the vet was able to hit a vein and put her down. A gun would have been more merciful. So IMO we need to have some sort of system where a person could take their beloved horse to be euthanized in a humane way that didn't cost hundreds of dollars to do so. I think this would be a godsend for people who have a horse/pony that they've had for decades, possible their entire life, a child's beloved mount but circumstances have entered into the picture where they can no longer care for their horse and cannot find anyone to take them. As Tawnee has stated, don't give your beloved horse away as lots of times they do end up in the slaughter pipeline. I also know that HPHS has taken in voluntary surrenders for the "last act of kindness." Maybe their voluntary surrender could go national also...
When Tawnee mentioned the cruel methods of killing used in Mexico, the moment she mentioned the death shower heavy shivers went down my spine. This is so inhuman and barbaric. I am German, so you most likely you understand why this is the most terrible thing to me. That anybody still does this to living beings...I cannot understand it. That young horse that broke through the trailer floor brought me to tears. Fingers crossed she has a chance to make it.
You're absolutely right! No more horses would be shipped out for horsemeat....they would all be sent to the fertilizer and glue factories. Do not rely on "the market" or customers magically disappearing. Instead, concentrate on making the shipments and the marketplace disappear... by making them illegal.

There are people who actually criticize what Horse Plus does, but if it wasn't for Horse Plus, injured horses like the one in this video would suffer a horrendous trip to slaughter in Mexico.
Someone replied to me after I suggested they look at the work you do, they said that you put down too many horses, to which I replied . . . . . . . . You do know that Horse Plus Humane Society takes in any animal even those who should have been put down by their owners long ago? Do you watch their videos? They get high numbers of neglected Amish horses in pretty rough shape that were not given vet care or euthanized but sold at slaughter price to squeeze that last dollar out of the animal. During their buy out they do not discriminate, they buy everything off the trucks and trailers in adoptable condition, to rehabilitate or in need of euthanasia, upon intake each animal is triaged, given proper vet care including, microchipped, wormed, vaccinated, teeth floating on really bad cases, onsite bloodwork and radiographs, as well at a later date any necessary surgeries, teeth floats, castrations and farrier care. Critical animals are given priority. Decisions are made on quality of life. Would you rather they were selective and took only the adoptable horses to keep euthanasia numbers down and let the rest ship to slaughter? She deleted her snotty comment.
I won't lie, it's hard to see those magnificent animals put down. It's heartbreaking, but I can't imagine NOT loving a horse, dog, cat or any animal enough to want them to suffer. I've heard it said that the greatest show of love is allowing that animal to die with dignity and pain free. I've done it myself and YES, IT SUCKED 😢😢😢
I think that one of the greatest things this world is missing the most, is compassion and empathy. All the naysayers and haters complaining about what Horse Plus does, these people do not imagine themselves in the horse's shoes, they do not imagine what pain fear and agony it must feel, to BE that horse (or other critter), and thus they fail to see the COMPASSION it takes, to give those animals that last act of kindness, the release of that extreme agony. Empathy is the ability to imagine what it is like to be someone else. Compassion is what it is to act in the best interest of that animal, even at the pain of saying good bye and having to admit that we are not god, and we cannot fix everything. This is why there are haters, and kill buyers. And this is also why there are those of us who do everything we can, to make a positive change in this world.
Very very well explained Comment of what they all do !! It’s a long hard list that goes on every day and then there’s the mental side of it. It takes a toll to see that every day. The hardest working people in our country are the most underpaid. And I know Tawny would pay them more if she could- that’s not the issue.
I just hope Horse Plus realizes what a true jem Dr.Lydia is !!! She’s an excellent veterinarian a super person and is easy to work with. I’m so incredibly thankful they have her !!! ❤
I hope they know, on the cellular level, that what they’re doing for these poor horses is far far better, kinder, more humane than what their ultimate destination had to offer. That said, it must be excruciating to see them come of the trailer in such horrific condition, knowing that all you can do is let them go gently.
I am always amazed at how cooperative these poor horses are and how well behaved after traumatic trailer rides and abuse prior to arriving at HPHS. Horses do not deserve humans!
@@caitlynharbidge3056 Yes, he is the kind that shows his emotions in his face and body language. I was upset when he "disappeared" for awhile, does anyone know why is was gone, if he was sick or having some surgery or whatever, I would have been praying for him.
Fell through a trailer floor?!!! That speaks volumes about the owner/transporter ... they don't take care of their equipment/trailers let alone their horses!!! SHAME!!! Tears for the horse ... I so hope you'all can save it!
It may not have been the transporter to HPHS that had the rotten floorboards. Since I didn't see any other horses from that lot with the same type of injuries. It could have been that it was the original owner's trailer and when they discovered it, they found someone to take her off their hands...
@@alycewich4472 Whatever happened, this poor mare didn't deserve it. This injury is so horrible and I dont know how she hasnt collapsed. I'm pulling for Miss 10% chance, go bless her.
The kill buyers probably aren't doing it out of the goodness of their hearts (if they even have a heart to begin with) it's probably just easier, quicker money for them to make use of the buy out program and be rid of the horses that they know aren't strong enough to make it through being shipped any further. You can't make $$$ off a horse that's buckled out from under it's feet and can't be shipped to be processed or make it through the auction ring one more time.
They are getting more per horse through the buyout program, AND they don't have to pay a commission per animal to the auction. That's the only reason they like it better.
@@lynnie0524 I'm all for what works and this seems to be working much better than the auction did. (Although I started watching their videos shortly before the auction house kicked them out.) The other thing is that the horses don't have to be run through the auction itself. They are hauled to HPHS, offloaded and almost immediately seen by the crew and have water and hay available right away.
@@alycewich4472 This also rewards the kill buyers more. So they are likely going around to pick up whatever barely alive horses and donkeys they can find for a few bucks so they can exploit the buyout program, taking funds away from the rehabilitation of other animals. Unfortunately, there is no perfect answer here. I agree, that this program is better for the horses, but it's still a shady game that the kill buyers play because all they care about is making money off discarded animals in whatever way they can do it best.
She's doing a quick medical assessment she doesn't have time to decipher everything. This is a desperate situation so you should be more considerate about it these people are working hard in the heat saving these poor souls thank you again horse plus and all you do for the animals

For a long time I've thought Horse Plus would be a great place for vet students to have an entire course at. Dr. Lydia seems to be a great teacher. And think of the long term effect of students taking the experience out into the world.

I'm particularly stunned by both the severely deformed horse and the expensive horse with the trailer floor injuries. I don't understand how either original owner thought slaughter was the solution. With the deformed horse, I know things can be done for each of the individual conditions when they're new foals, but hot damn that's a lot of issues all at once. It's clear to be that euthanasia very early on would have been the humane choice. As for the $10,000 horse, how do you spend that kind of money on what looks like a very well bred horse and then be so careless handling it?
Thank you so much for explaining the horrible ways that horses are slaughtered. It’s good for everyone to know how bad things really are rather than just hearing that slaughter is bad. Keep up the amazing work y’all!! You serve a hundred popsicles!
There are people who actually complain when Horse Plus euthanizes some of the horses. But they don't understand, alot of these issues their complaining about cannot be fixed. Better to euthanize than have them continue to suffer. Original owners should have down the right thing, before these horses get that bad, instead of looking to make a few bucks, because they wouldn't make much anyways with broken bones, skinny horses, etc.
I lived in town for a time, not far from a butcher. Every now & then a cow would escape. I imagine being in "line" to the kill chute would be horrendous.
Both Vets do a marvelous job with care and it must break their hearts to see so many that could have been saved if taken by their owners to the vet early and or put to sleep, well done to all at HP.
I noticed that the people delivering the horses had their faces blured out so they can't be recognized. What, could they be too ashamed to show their faces if people should recognize them, and realize the truth, about what horrible care they took of the animals in their possession? Shame on them!!! These once healthy animals deserved better from their owners, who they trusted to take care of them. Are there no laws in TN about animal cruelty and neglect?
Horse plus does very good work, watching how the vets evaluate the horses you can see that they take their time and take their work seriously. It is tough to put an animal down, not something for me but letting them go to slaughter is so much worse. Tawnee talking about what happens in Mexico is horrendous. Bless you for all you do for these babies. ❤❤
Tawnee, I’m glad you told people what happens in Mexico. I couldn’t look into it myself as I knew it would be too upsetting but, I know by telling people, it will hopefully stop them questioning why you have to give the last act of kindness to horses. You should never have to justify your actions because your vets will never euthanise a healthy horse, it literally is the very last option. The fact people put you in the position to have to spell it out, is as cruel as the abusers themselves. I think sometimes it’s forgivable because it may be young people questioning, they don’t understand how critical a horse can be, yet it’s still standing. They don’t understand and feel there’s hope, but horses hide severe illness and injury so well. The ones that are unforgivable are the ones old enough and educated enough to know better. They don’t bother to look past the end of their noses, they’re a minority but boy do they shout the loudest. In my opinion, they’re as bad as the abusive owners. Not only do they want to leave a horse suffer unbearable pain but they want to abuse the only people who are doing something loving for that horse. Sorry to write an essay, I just wanted you to know you’re appreciated so much for every life you make better. You’re earth angels, every single one of you and you deserve so much respect for all you go through to give relief to so many lives. 🫶🏻🙌🏼
OMG, bless their hearts, first thing off the bat, unbelievable trauma on multiple horses. It is going to be a marathon day. God bless you for taking them in and doing what their owners should have done LONG AGO. It is like watching combat triage.
Thank you to the team working in harsh conditions today. Prayers for those horses that need healing and those time who got the last act of kindness. No more pain. Rest in Peace. 😔😔😔
This is so heartbreaking! What do ppl do to these poor horses that they end up in such horrific conditions!! I’ve been involved with horses for 50 years and never come across horses like the ones you take in.
There's the amish who work their horses until worn out or injured. There's the horses whose owners thought slaughter would be better than euthanasia and these horses have a lot of issues. Backyard breeders trying to make a last buck from deformed, sick or excess foals. Then factor in the length of time in the trailer and going through multiple auctions so any conditions or injuries just keep getting worse and worse. It's shocking what happens to these guys 😢
Yes, because their not having to try and bid against kill buyers who can afford to pay more. Any decent owner will make more of an effort to re-home, instead of sending to auction.
@@dianekruger5977 Here in the Rockies, it is becoming more difficult to find a vet who will put down a horse. I had such a traumatic event happen with my trying to put my old gentle mare down as there was something VERY WRONG with her and my vet was out of town at a conference. (Cell phones were rather a novelty at that time...) On call vet, new vet, and unknown vet all refused to put her down, even though I knew she was dying. In the end she was put down, but not in a gentle way by the young vet almost 24 hours after she fell ill. So PLEASE don't put all the blame on the horse owner. Not all of us have guns to do it ourselves and with large animal vets becoming few and far between as the older ones retire and most of the younger ones don't seem to want to live and work out of a vet truck in all hours of the day and night and in all kinds of weather. I truly cannot blame them for that. But what happens to the backyard horse owner who doesn't have a big truck and trailer to take their horses to the vet?
You are all so lovely people. Jason try´s to even lighten the mood with nice words and Tawnee trying to get her energy back with popstickles. And all the suffering horses you have to endure to see! Great work, thank you for helping them all!

It's way past my bedtime but I HAD to watch tonite. I follow this page and I learn more and more about veterinary practices each episode. I've owned 7 horses in my life, still ride, and still learn. I cry every episode.
When that one donkey came off the trailer, from the camera angle, I thought, “Oh, a unicorn!” One donkey’s ear was a bit forward making it look like a horn!
Tawnee it is not just the auction/slaughter scenario which needs to change radically in the 🎉USA but educating people generally in the care of equines PRIOR to actually buying a horse. Also anyone found to have abused equines should face criminal charges,,and if found hiilty, be banned from owning horses, or othrr animals for a long time. Hopefully your Education Outreach will have a positive outcome.
Here in NZ any road transport must display a current warrant (certificate) of fitness which comes up annually for vehicles registered as follows, (and before that it is 6 monthly) You have to get a warrant of fitness check every: 12 months if your vehicle was first registered anywhere in the world on or after 1 January 2000. 6 months if your vehicle was first registered anywhere in the world before 1 January 2000.13 This is processed by vehicle inspectors and mechanics and can only pass through strict criteria. This seems to be a law sorely lacking in the USA. It would prevent those horrendous leg injuries on that stunning young mare. Infuriating! I hope she recovers and can live a life ahead of her deserves.
I randomly had one of your videos in my feed. I am a city slicking girl with a love of the pit bull. This happened 12 hours ago and I have been watching a lot of your videos. It is so heartbreaking the condition some of these babies are in. The last act of kindness is more than you know. Some of them have probably never felt a soft touch or been told they're a good boy or girl. They're large, smart, animals who could hurt a human badly if they so choose. Thank you so much for helping them all, even if it's their last day on earth. At least they're being loved as they're leaving this earth. I hope you guys never stop, i hope you guys keep sharing these horses faith and what they endu up to if you are not there. Bless you guys. This slaughter pipeline needs to stop. I dont mind auctions in general, but it should be illegal to auction off sick, hurt and suffering animals. Also, it is about time to fine people not taking properly care of their animals, and they should go to jail if not taking proper care of them in life, and at the end of their life.
Pls get a ramp for those trailers yous have, in England we don't have those jump on/jump off trailers, we have ramps which will limit pain on loading/unloading for those poor disabled creatures. All decent vet hospitals here have ramps to lessen injury and pain on unloading. I'd be happy to fund something bespoke made to fit your existing boxes. With love from England.x

In their eyes, even this is a merciful end to their suffering. That's why they call it the last act of kindness. The horses pass away being loved on until their last breath. There are humans who don't get that when they pass away.

Fingers crossed for the mare with the horrible rear legs! She looks so sweet. Please keep us updated. 😢

@@ronallen6578 Absolutely!
You go girl!!! So proud of you!!
Everyone at HPHS pets and strokes the animals soothing and encouraging them. Wonderful people i appreciate you all.
I just hope Horse Plus realizes what a true jem Dr.Lydia is !!! She’s an excellent veterinarian a super person and is easy to work with. I’m so incredibly thankful they have her !!! ❤
They do appreciate her! She worked with and mentored by Doc for years. 🎉
And Dr Gina also!
So is Dr, Gina.
This has to be so hard emotionally on your whole group. Bless all of you for what you do.
Humans do not deserve horses.
It's FABULOUS to have Troy back!❤❤❤ Brother, we are rooting for you!
Yes, welcome back Troy, you are much needed at Horse Plus!
Troy looked absolutely heart sick at the first intake, he seems so empathetic and they're so lucky to have him there ❤ 😊
@@caitlynharbidge3056 Yes, he is the kind that shows his emotions in his face and body language.
Seems like even some of the kill buyers are not so fond of slaughter... I am so glad they are starting to bring them to you instead!
Hoping the mare was the trailer injuries is saved, her owners clearly didnt even try and get her vet help, unreal. Ty HPHS for all you do
She's doing a quick medical assessment she doesn't have time to decipher everything.

The Broken, Multiple Auction Baby, -- Is INFURIATING.
Inexcusable.
Right, that poor baby's story is unforgivable!
And so cheap they wouldn't euthanize it themselves. So many people don't deserve horses.
God bless you all.
Thank you so much for explaining the horrible ways that horses are slaughtered. It’s good for everyone to know how bad things really are rather than just hearing that slaughter is bad. Keep up the amazing work y’all!! You serve a hundred popsicles!
I totally agree with Tawnee the last act of kindness is such an amazing blessing compared to the mexican slaughter process. ❤😢😊😊
@@dianekruger5977es ist auch nicht sinnvoll immer alles was medizienisch machbar ist auch zu tun !
I lived in town for a time, not far from a butcher. Every now & then a cow would escape. I imagine being in "line" to the kill chute would be horrendous.
Shame, shame that the previous owners cared more for a few bucks than end this extreme suffering.
You can just see how much Dr Lydia cares about these horses!! She looks so stress today!! I hope she takes a day off to reset
Great job, Jason and all the crew ... Dr. Lydia ROCKS.
Horses are like kids. Anything they can get into, they will.
My saying is. "A horse is an accident waiting to happen." I swear there are some horses that could severely injure themselves in a fully padded stall.
@@alycewich4472 I agree. Or any little thing that can poke, cut,or scrape, they'll find it.
I would love to see the impact this is having on that auction ❤❤❤
We have insider info they have hardly any horses coming though!
@@hphs thank you. They bit off their nose to spite their face and you guys are fantastic ❤️❤️❤️
We're all glad Tory is back!

I love all the clean hay as they come of the trailer. Soft landing and a snack! Great idea.
Getting banned from the auctions is unfair and sucks but it has also allowed you guys to get more horses then ever before
Yes, because their not having to try and bid against kill buyers who can afford to pay more.
And wouldn’t to be awesome if the Auction House went out of business because they banned Horse+!
You are all so lovely people. Jason try´s to even lighten the mood with nice words and Tawnee trying to get her energy back with popstickles. And all the suffering horses you have to endure to see!

Amazing rescue.🎉
Great coordination between you all.
And what a blistering day, for all that work!! 💕
Here in NZ any road transport must display a current warrant (certificate) of fitness which comes up annually for vehicles registered as follows, (and before that it is 6 monthly)
You have to get a warrant of fitness check every: 12 months if your vehicle was first registered anywhere in the world on or after 1 January 2000. 6 months if your vehicle was first registered anywhere in the world before 1 January 2000.13
This is processed by vehicle inspectors and mechanics and can only pass through strict criteria. This seems to be a law sorely lacking in the USA. It would prevent those horrendous leg injuries on that stunning young mare. Infuriating! I hope she recovers and can live a life ahead of her deserves.
@julierussell8876. Same here in Germany. Every 2 years vehicles, also trailers have to pass "TÜV". This is mandatory and is a thorough inspection.
I am so happy and excited to see one come in with a fixable issue being sent off to pasture and watching them live life. You can tell they're surprised, and happy, once they get in that green grass. The Horsey version of Heaven is what you all have and are.

It seems the auction ban may be a blessing for the equines because you are getting more of them.
My thoughts exactly.
The inhumanity in people. It is sickening to me. Poor poor horses. It is painful to watch how some of this horses have been treated.
We love Haley!
Pls get a ramp for those trailers yous have, in England we don't have those jump on/jump off trailers, we have ramps which will limit pain on loading/unloading for those poor disabled creatures.
