    Hi Russell. Love your channel. I think you are having to rinse it so much because the suds get stuck between the rug and the floor beneath with nowhere to go. A trick I use when doing mine is to hang it on a rope between two sturdy poles. That gets the suds to either exit from the back with the pressure or drip down out of the carpet. Thank you for all the nice reviews and tips.

      I am glad you posted your comment, because I was thinking that the problem was either too much soap or the situation you described. I reckon it was both! I will use rope next time! What a lovely comment, thank you. :-)

      I go and get some shipping wood pallets from the grocery store they have slats and I place the rug on those and it goes through first I beat with carpet beater (after vacuum) then I use similar to your method except with a carpet rake and squeegee it it’s a lot of work very good workout!!

      @@RussellPlatten Yes hang it up then rinse it. I hang mine on my hammock. It lets the water flow downwards both front and back. Leave it in the same place to dry. It drys in less time.

    I can’t thank you enough because my dad gave me his old kurcher washing thing and I didn’t realise that the pressure thing was on the stick. I assumed I broke it because it worked great when he gave it to me. Just checked it after watching this and it works fine. Thank you for posting :) 🙏

    Potentially, you could hang it on the fence, with more than half of it hanging to the inside of your backyard, and rinse it there, so the water just falls along with the soap. Then you switch to the other half and repeat. At least that way the soap won't accumulate under it, which seems to be what makes it difficult to get off.
    Another thing, though. It's possible that using pressure may make the soap even more foamy and hard to get off. If that's the case, then perhaps using a hose with no nozzle might just let the soap fall with the water without creating more foam.
    I may try this myself one of these days.

    Thanks Russell. Tip mate: better to push the dirty water from the underside of the rug at first rinse with the pressure washer, then flip it over to final rinse on the fiber side. Dont want to push the surfaced dirt back into the pile. Cheers!

  • @shavinmccrotch9435

    If the rug has a fragrance afterward, it still has detergent in it.
    I’d like to see you try putting 2 gallons of white vinegar in that bucket with only about 4 teaspoons of good grease-cutting liquid dish soap, a quart of isopropyl rubbing alcohol, and top it off with water.
    That should do the job with a fraction of the rinsing time. It will leave no residue and no scent or odors of any kind. All you’ll smell is wool & sunshine. 😁
    Good video though. I was thinking about using my pressure washer, but I was unsure if I should. Now I know. Thank you! 😘
    Edit: In case you’re concerned, a little liquid dish soap is no harder on it than powder detergent. White vinegar is actually used to lock dyes in, so no worries there, and the smell goes away once it’s completely dry, lifting away all other odors with it. And alcohol is capable of some mild bleaching action, but I’m confident that a quart diluted in a 5 gallon bucket of vinegar & water will be harmless, but you can use a pint, or skip it entirely if you’re concerned.

    Y’all leave this guy alone! At least it’s clean! Maybe he doesn’t have the method perfected but honestly if it’s me and it’s an older rug I’d rather have it maybe slightly damaged but CLEAN! But I agree there are a couple helpful things he could done (yes needs a squeegee) but I love how thorough he was and how he actually used plenty of soap! I have some carpet cleaning ppl in my family and actually most rugs can be done this way! If it’s not TOO damaging and he personally doesn’t mind then I don’t see the big deal if it’s a rug that it’s not best on! Ps. I love carpet cleaning videos!

    Hi, Interesting video, nice old hand knotted rug too, can I suggest though that using as pressure washer will eventually destroy your rug, if you use a squeegee to get most of the soap suds out then hose the rest, not only will this be better for your rug, it will also cut the time down dramatically. Its worth noting, not all rugs have stable dyes, especially hand knotted persian rugs, dye bleed will occure when the rug is left wet, so a squeegee to get the water out is essential as is drying quickly, to dry quickly do not lay the rug flat, drape it over a wall, water will drain out of woll much faster than it will evaporate.

    • @RussellPlatten
      @RussellPlatten  2 роки тому

      There is no issue with the dye running Robert and there does not appear ro be any damage as there are no fibres left on the pavers after I have finished. :-)

We spot clean them however I want to get the rugs clean so that when the new dog comes in, he or she won’t smell that sent and think it’s OK to add to the smell. I know we have to use some solution that will help get rid of that sent. Coincidentally, last night I was telling someone how I pretty much destroyed a rug. It had never been cleaned and was well over 10 years old, probably closer to 20.
    I rolled it up and soaked it in a bathtub full of hot Napi San, and the amount of brown gunk that came out was ridiculous. The water was a rich brown slurry that completely opaque but oddly satisfying. I agitated the rug in the bathtub with a metal pole.
    To rinse it, we draped the rug over some wheelie bins and hosed it down. This is where things became bad. The weight of the water pulled sections of the rug apart, as if the rug was made of three sections stitched together.
    Eventually though, the rug dried and was amazingly clean. But what used to be shag pile was now fluffy like sheepskin, and was now a solid mid grey, instead of the original patchy cream!
    The rug is still usable, albeit you need to be careful not to disturb the sections...

  • @Raven.flight
    @Raven.flight 4 роки тому +4

    I like the theory, but I would do it slightly different, and this is just (what I consider) an improvement on your already brilliant job.
    First, vacuum the rug as you've said, then wash it thoroughly with the pressure washer from the bottom. In other words, as you flipped to wash out the suds, do that as a first action (after vacuuming). My reasoning is that you'll loosen all the fine bits of dirt, gravel and sand that have been trodden into the rug over the years, and they will be pushed to the surface of the rug from deep down in the weave. THEN clean it as you've said. It's an extra step, but my mind was going 'yeah, but when you pressure wash it to wash the suds off, all the small bits of detritus is going to end up being forced back into the weave. So, just my idea, and I'll give it a go when it's summer in 3 months time.

    what is your rug made out of? I have an area rug that is 50% friese yarn and 50% polyester yarn. Our dog had an accident on it and our pet spot cleaner is not working. I'm just wondering if doing something like that would wreck it.

    • @RussellPlatten

      I am not sure Jenny. The rug I clean is a very old rug from Asia. All natural fibres. :-)

    Best way to get rid of excess soap is with fabric softener. Mix in a bucket and pour over rug. It's the same as de-foamer

    Been in the Rug business for 30 years... That process could work only on certain specific rugs... Will damage most Rugs with that process... The two most important things is the proper cleaning solutions and correct drying process and neither one was achieved...Need a floor squeegee and shop vac at the minimum...

      I second the Shopvac idea. Also the rug should be thoroughly beaten and vacuumed beforehand!

    I do the same yet different... Instead I hang my carpet on a firm clothing line (note a FIRM clothing line bcs wet carpets are heavy) maybe you can lay it over you fence? I figure bcs of the gravity water runs down, so I start blasting on the highest point and work my way down bcs the water runs down the dirt/soap washes downward, really shortens cleaning time.
    First I blast the carpet so the most of the dirt comes out, then I scrub it with soap en a drill scrubber, (if you're power washer has a soap dispenser you can use that). Then rinse al the soap/dirt. Then I use a "multi-purpose vacuum cleaner from Kärcher WD 3" (don't know how you call it in english I think wet/dry vacuum?!?) To suck out the excessive water/dirt (you'd be amazed how much dirty water that still comes out of the carpet. And tthe let it dry in the sun...
