Nice Job! Very instructive & helpful. I've been a ham for over 30 years and purchased a buddistick several years ago for portable operation. Planning on using it this weekend for the first time with my ICOM 706MKiiG for Field Day 2021. Thanks for the well-done video!! 73, Ron - KJ5XX
Dave, Very creative reverse angle camera shots on the telescopic whip and tripod extending. Will try to use this concept in future vids ...Thanks buddy! Goats R Us wGOAT
That's a nice antenna. I ordered an MFJ G5RV Jr. antenna which UPS just delivered today but I don't think I'm going to have room for it. Your Buddistick seems like a much better solution for me. Thanks for the video. Your experience with the antenna has me now looking at getting one.
Very informative video about the Buddistick. I had mine out a couple of weeks ago for a Thanksgiving campout. It’s still my go to antenna for portable ops. Never tried it on 10 meters though, I think I’ll give 10 a shot this weekend! Take care, John/W5CYF
If you are not allowed a tower you could try the same thing as a friend did back in the 80's ( when CB became legal in the UK ). Basically he wanted a tower...'nope...sorry, no can do' was the answer he got...'ahhh...ok...can I put up a flagpole'? 'Oh yes! you can do that'. So...he set up the flagpole, but before he erected it he cut a groove along the length of it and stuffed some heavy duty copper wire into it, filled the gap with white bathroom sealant...then erected his "Flagpole"...complete with his hidden antenna, all hooked up to a ATU...so far as I know its still there!
Ah made in 2011 - just as the solar cycle was picking up nicely.... Wonder what 10 meters is like now. I've got a buddipole (stick) but havent tried it on 10m, shall have to see whats out there :)
Nice video, I have been curious about user's performance with the Buddistick. I LOVE my Buddipole. I'd recommend the Guy line kit to you though even without a dipole set up, I'd hate to see you break a whip if an unexpected gust of wind blows the thing over!
@pointer4me - You are spot on sir! The whole point of the tripod & mast for me is an integrated portable UHF / VHF / HF solution. I will do a video review as I am getting a lot of questions about the tripod, mast and antenna. 73!
@USNERDOC I get that Home assoc want to keep the homes looking nice kept up but if you had dish or some other sat system for tv you still have something attached to the home that detracts from the look of an area..id thing they'd be more concerned with old rusty cars and big RV's and weedy lawns and not an antenna on a home..jmo
I don't think there is. I know that the buddipole has a configuration for 40-2 meters (7-144 MHz). There is also an optional low band coil and a balun for 80 meter (3.5-4 MHz)
but flag pole's are legal. also check with a lawyer as in most cases your hoa can not prevent you from having a "ham radio tower". such cases have been through the courts. but to keep the peace think rain gutter, attic. antennas.
one thing i noticed, u do not have the coil apparatus they show online. is that not important? u have only the antenna and counter poise. can u explain that? am I better off with the buddipole with the two arms, or will this serve my purposes as well do do Hf?
was going to get the buddy pole, now u have me sold on the buddy stick. love that thing. hope i can figure it out, your video will help. dont really understand about the counter poise (sp?) part and ur video cut out b4 i could see where you mounted that.
Hey Dave, I wonder if you can get away with one of those ventenna's over e vent pipe on the roof? I've been looking into one of those here myself with one of my antenna's - currently, I have a discone that will do 6,2,440 in my attic and another tri-bander sitting up on a filing cabinet in my office/shack next to a window. I can get some pretty decent coverage on the various 2m repeaters here in the Eugene Area, including those up in Salem and Cottage Grove. I may get a buddistick, too. KE7OUR
This is a newbie question but I couldn't see the coil on your buddistick, was it out of the frame of the camera and did you find it difficult at first to tune? 73's pgrundle
@USNERDOC How about a wire dipole? Less visible than a power line. Also, you might want to see Ham Nation episode 23 where W0FM discusses his experience with attic antennas. Teak W0TLP
Nice video.... However, not wanting to rain on your parade, but DX contacts on bands like 10m are easy to make with a coat hanger when the conditions are good. Case in point, I had a mobile whip hanging upside down from the floor joist in my basement here in North America, and used it to make a successful QSO on SSB on 10m into Japan, in the early 1980s. I wouldn't attribute any success to any compromised antenna, especially the Buddipole. It is all about propagation etc.. I only say this because this brand of antenna is grossly over priced and I feel bad should someone watching think that if they spend their hard earned money on one that magically they will be working the world any more so than they would on a couple lengths on wire on the end of a coax cable. Sure, the BuddiPole systems looks cool, as they have all kinds of "gadgets" but none of these things add to performance, maybe convenience at best. A similar system could be home made in minutes by anyone for about $20. Otherwise nice video and continue enjoying the hobby, that is what it is about.
+Wm Robert Leschyna - congratulations on your Japan SSB QSO in the 80’s whip antenna in your basement. Many thanks for the propagation discussion and critique the BuddiPole. Thank you for watching.
The tripod/mast would be nice for my buddistick, but geez...$85 for the tripod and another $55 for the mast!? Going to see if I can find a cheaper solution...
you're fine at talking horizontal on an antenna and receiving horizontal on an antenna is much better than vertical you're going to lose a lot of line noise 2
+Joe Framo - FYI it isn’t a canvas bag ... there is a lot that goes into the manufacturing of that bag. That said the are a lot of alternative carry solutions for a FT-817ND or similar sized transceiver.
@@USNERDOC hey my friend I apologize if I came off being rude didn't mean that I really meant to say it's really nice it's real customized for the 817 I moved up to the FT 818 let me know if they ever go on sale where the price comes down I surely like to buy one thank you so much your best friend from Atlanta Georgia 73
@@joeframo3347 - no worries ... I learned a long time ago not to read emotion into UA-cam comments. I appreciate you watching and your interest. Please keep an eye on our website as we do put things on sale. 73!

Nice setup doc! I just inherited an old radio out of a lancaster bomber my gramps had in the war

The Buddistick and Buddipole is a great antenna system. Tks for the review
love the camera angles, including mounting the camera to the mast!

remember the most important thing for an antenna is the best ground that you can have
So he set up for 10 meters, no coil needed?
Thanks for the video! Wanted to know if you needed to use the coil for this setup? I've seen other people use the coil that comes with it.

@JoeDurobot - I could put an antenna up on my roof except the Home Owners Association doesn't allow visible external antennas.
@Scotscan - I will do a video review as I am getting a lot of questions about the tripod.
Thanks!
So the higher it is the farther away you can reach people?
Cant you have a giant antenna on your roof?
great job
Are you still using a Buddistick in 2020?
Great film. interesting. I think you will have to move seems shame you can`t put up a mast. best regards from the UK.
I like the tripod. How high does it extend to?

DOC,
where can I get those things you have in your hands that hold the 550 cord? Thanks!
I got them from Sportsman Warehouse. They are tensioning devices for tent / tarps.
I noticed that you don't use the coil.

@USNERDOC Time for a multi band stealth flagpole antenna?
Can be used for vhf

No coil . . . just the long whip and a counterpoise.
I work a mile west from them
you be better off with a V quad horizontally in your attic with an antenna tuner the DB games much more than that antenna
I work right the street from them
I didn't even see a ground wire
