None here really know that Neveu went into the studio, performed all through , and everything edited and published you are hearing in the moment are first takes. She was 19 when she performed the Concerto for the first time and still a student of Carl Flesh in 1939. The recording is dated 1946.Flesh had the original score. He was so impressed by her rendition of the piece that he gave her the score. No wonder Sibelius himself was so impressed by her performance as well. Neveu does not cheat like most violinists, including Heifetz. At the end, the famous octaves, all skip the lower g d string octaves and do an open A. She is the only one able to do the very acrobatic shift: 15:07

Most highly praised, and most revelatory, was her Sibelius (with the Philharmonia Orchestra and Walter Susskind). Of it, the composer wrote, 'I particularly wish to speak of my feeling of profound gratitude when I think of the inspired and extremely sensitive performance of my Violin Concerto which Ginette Neveu rendered unforgettable.' (Wiki)
No wonder Sibelius was 'profoundly grateful' to her for her play of his violin concerto.

My favourite performance. Heard it first when I was at university. Spent years trying to find out who I had heard. When I heard it again on radio many years later, I recognised Ginette's playing immediately. It truly is wonderful.

This is music from another time, highly idiomatic and sincere. Neveu was incredible! She sounds authentic, and it sounds strangely refreshing nowadays, so many years later. This concerto has tons of personality, for a lack of a better word; and her tone was out of this world. Nobody saw this work like her, and after hearing this concerto you will never hear it the same. It is a glimpse pf another time, and an irreplaceable artist. There are very few of this artists. Like Huberman's rendition of the Beethoven concerto.

I came across this piece when I was collecting 78's as a teenager. At that age it was hard to take. It seemed strident and angry and I had come to it after hearing the Beethoven, Tchaikowsky and Bruch. But after some time I took it in. What I didn't understand then, but do now from other performances, its exceptional quality.

As usual, from this time period and specifically from Neveu, there is a fresh spontaneous approach to the music as if she composed it on the spot herself. These performers weren't embarrassed or apologetic about playing from their hearts.

    • @jansnauwaert1785

    • @KarloFio

Embarrassed or apologetic, why would anybody say something like that?😢And, do you really think any great artist today performs without the heart? G.Neveau won the first prize in Warsaw when she was 15, D.Oistrakh was 27 and came in second... Her Sibelius is considered one of the greatest interpretations of that concerto ever!

The only Sibelius Concerto performer I would truly think best expressed what Sibelius intended with this work. Before hearing Ginette's version , I never cared for it. Everyone else including Heifetz played it with too even timing and too aggressively. Very emotional and expressive rendition:BRAVO, Ginette!!!
