I'm a big fan of the Highlander franchise. This movie has nothing to do with it but taking the apparent immortality issue in such way (pure chance) was inspiring. Loved every minute of it. You end up asking yourself if there isn't a John among us.
This is for the people that forget what the movie is called at the beginning and are too lazy to go back to the beginning or look it up and they thank you

This was an impressive movie. It mostly takes place in a single room with the premise of a man who has lived throughout human history and goes over it without any glorification of it. The first time I saw it I didn't know what to make of it. By the second time I enjoyed this extremely simple, low budget film. It is still unique to this day.
The only problem is Jesus didnt come from Buddah's region. He was born a Jew in Nazareth and had a mother called Mary. Jesus was literally known already by locals when He started His missionaries. Jesus was known so well that the bible mentions how people were astonished that He knew so much about God when he never grew up as a rabbi. Jesus also made miracles and even now you can never disagree with the points he made in his sermons.
@@user-ot4rc9jh8e The parents of Jesus were Essenes, mystics connected to Magi (Zoroastrians), Hindus and buddhists. Their teachings were thus similar to eastern teachings and different from those of the Pharisees and sadducees. Legend has it that this was why Magi from the east attended his birth, bearing gifts, and that Jesus travelled to the east to learn their traditions, returning at age 30 years, which is why the bible was silent about him until then.
Terrific movie! In the ending scene, John treated 'Chilly Willy' more like a distant relative rather than a son....seemed a little cold not to see John cry after Will died, but I guess John didn't spend enough time with Will to have a huge emotional bond with Will. Will's death benefitted John though because it clearly warned Sandy, his assistant/girlfriend that if she was going to tag along with John, then she should do so with eyes wide open to the eventuality of him leaving her.
That is a side effect of living and seeing too much. There is a series that explore this with the idea of transferring consciousness as a way to travel through the stars. Altered carbon
It's likely that John has thousands/millions of descendens. I recon you really lose the emotional binding after the first couple hundred. One human can only grieve so much.
"seemed a little cold " I mean I think you would probably have to be. Constantly seeing everyone you love die for thousands of years you would probably develop a numbness to it.
I really loved this movie. It was super low budget and basically all took place in one room, and I figured very few people knew about it. But I think it was always one of my favorites. Had a kind of similar feel to 12 Angry Men. I'm not sure if I already ceased being Christian by the time I watched it or if this movie was one of the many things that made me start questioning my beliefs.
A movie based on fiction changing history to fit the narrative of one character made you question your beliefs? Sounds to me that you didn't have any strong feelings or understandings of your belief.

There's a dc comic book character named "Vandal Savage" whose story is sort of the similar except he is a villain, I think they are even around the same age 14000 years old
Its important to note that Vandal Savage isn't really human all things considered even putting aside his immortality and heightened intelligence he would be one of the "proto-humans" like a Neanderthal or something else which would explain his appearance, strength and durability. It should also be noted that he hasn't always been a villian in his life it just so happens that in the modern world his views and ideology of Survival of the fittest isn't a heroic one. Also I believe that Vandal Savage is based on a character that appears briefly in one of the pulp fiction stories of what i think was "The Shadow" and I can't remember much more then that but thats were the concept of that character comes from.
Don't compare Vandal to this weakling. Besides, Vandal is secretly Earth's protector. Obviously, he wants to rule it, because knows what cosmic dangers awaits the planet. Even if he accepts and embraces natural selection, which is quite reasonable point of view from Savage's standpoint. At least according with "Young Justice" adaptation of the character. And after all, if you live so long, you experience loss so many times, you either get crazy or detached. Vandal became the latter, but also didn't want seat down doing nothing.
as someone who is religious i really enjoyed this movie. we should all have our minds open to truth. yes we believe in things but also we (everyone) should be open to the possibility that they are wrong. Socrates - "I know that I know nothing" and was that the one who thought something like the only thing i know to be certain is that i exist? hmmm in any case i think this looks like a great movie.
Would you be open to changing your mind about being open changing your mind. See well minor things or that's hell with that conviction can be swayed into a change. Things that require full commitments and conviction can't be. Unless there's a change of person there won't be a change of mind. Now someone may change the religion however that's not change of mind but a change of belief. The mind while neuroplastic, in consideration to a person is often rigid in its purpose. The pursuits of fulfilling relationships, the achievements of great success, the Ecstasy of indulging in pleasures and the accumulation and exertion of control and power. These things can be seen in reflections of almost all people, in those few I haven't seen take actions based upon these things have most certainly done it, are going to do it, or my analysis was not deep enough into their actions. I find that people who are open to change their minds often mean beliefs they have that they consider with little importance.

I went to high school with David Lee Smith the actor in this movie. We hung out every now and then. He was a really nice guy. Haven't seen him since High school because he was a grade above me. He went to the University of Alabama I think after High school I believe. I think it's cool that he is doing what he loves!
We went to Banks High School in Birmingham, Alabama. Sadly our school was torn down. Our rival High School was Woodlawn High School in Birmingham as well. The made a movie about a football player named Tony Nathan. The movie was called Woodlawn! my sister went to Woodlawn with Tony Nathan. I remember him even though my sister was a year behind him.
I watched the movie some time ago and thought that it was very thought provoking. The reasons that he gave for his longevity were interesting from the points about cell regeneration, always moving on, like a reptilian instinct (not of aggressive fighting for blood, but fighting for life.) Liked he was evolving/learning whenever and wherever he would immigrate to. There are certain things that he mentioned would shake the core of many religious faiths. The ending is a validation of his stories, be it in a sad way. Liked how he ended up with his girlfriend joining him. Kind of a lord of Rings twist, he lives to see a son die, which no parent should experience, but perhaps he lives to see another person he loves the girlfriend, die.
This is very interesting, this reminds me of my own life of searching for the truth, the real truth, whether it be admirable or too difficult to fathom!

This was a great movie, i found out about it when a Twitch artist i watch talked about it after he was hired to to teach primitive skills for the sequel, and you can even see his hand during the fire making scene.
While the warning at the beginning is understandable, I just want to say that I am quite religious yet wasn't offended by this at all. If we can't look at a different take on our beliefs (especially a fictional one) then what we have isn't faith but rather desperate clinging. This looks like a really cool movie.
Imagine being born in the ice age and living until now. I would probably also travel the world and try to keep all my memories with writing, first on stones and then on paper, to give people more facts about literally everything. I would try to document everything. This would probably mean that religions aren't a part of today's life anymore but the intelligence of all humans in the world would be better. I would probably do a lot of good stuff, like helping people build towns, trying to make a vaccine and live my life helping people with food, building stuff and so on. The world wouldn't be so poor at some places and I would've done more for the climate and protecting animals.
I am pretty sure if you were born in ice age you wouldn't get the idea to write down your life. Plus how the fuck would you carry that? Before the end of the ice age you would already have ridiculous amount of books. Books made from stones!!!!
This movie was a mind-blower. I've probably watched it a couple of dozen times since first viewing. The second movie, "The Man from Earth: Holocene" is interesting, as well.
I watched this during med school. Its a fascinating, thought-provoking story from the main character, all focused on trying to work out if hes telling the truth or not. Its really fun to have your own ideas on how he can prove who he says he is. Its light hearted, fun and good for an intellectual watch.
@@raywhitehead730 That's blatantly untrue. Heinlein's work you reference was published in 1973. Jerry Bixby's first major work with this premise was the Trek episode "Requiem for Methuselah" which aired in 1969. This film is just a reworking of his original concept. And in the first place the premise refers to a Biblical figure anyway. The entire sci-fi community has always borrowed and remixed content from each other, especially back in the golden days of short fiction. Jerry's no exception, but he was particularly known for having highly original premises in general, and far more works derive from his material than there are works by him that derive from others. I mean come on, you're talking about the guy who first widely popularized the concept of a mirror universe and who conceived _Fantastic Voyage._ Heinlein is great and did a lot of brilliant original stuff too, and I'm not saying he got his idea from the Trek episode -- he absolutely could have had it independently -- but to accuse Jerry of deriving this storyline from the Heinlein work is patently ridiculous.

The parents of Jesus were Essenes, mystics connected to Magi (Zoroastrians), Hindus and buddhists.

I think if he was willing to tell her his secret, he probably would have been willing to let her move around with him a time or two

There's a dc comic book character named "Vandal Savage" whose story is sort of the similar except he is a villain, I think they are even around the same age 14000 years old
Savage is at least 40k years old.
Vandal is, iirc, 75,000 years old.
One is a phsycho who is immortal the other is living forever but mortal.
as someone who is religious i really enjoyed this movie. we should all have our minds open to truth. yes we believe in things but also we (everyone) should be open to the possibility that they are wrong. Socrates - "I know that I know nothing" and was that the one who thought something like the only thing i know to be certain is that i exist? hmmm in any case i think this looks like a great movie.
That's good and well put. It's refreshing to hear that from a religious person. Most that I have met will never change their minds.
same i am religious and i think this is a cool movie idea

If we have free will, dont we have a say right now to choose doing good or evil. If we choose Good, why would we go against God, who is also keeping evil accountable. If we choose Evil, why do we expect God to redeem our free will? Isnt the whole point about Jesus to be redeemed through his death, and not by our own attempts? God created Heaven and Hell for that reason. The bible even says God does not want ANYBODY to go to hell. But still people will still go by their own free will. Taking our Free will is not love. Its forcing a love on people. God gives people time to love him.God wont force anyone to pray.

Hmmm, I think this would work better if you were transferred with your knowledge to the ice age with the immortality that he has.
sucks for u, ud be locked away in some lab getting experimented on 😂😂☠️

@@thehuntermikipl1170 I don't mean to keep the stones, I would make cave paintings and invent writing like humans did.
This movie was a mind-blower. I've probably watched it a couple of dozen times since first viewing. The second movie, "The Man from Earth: Holocene" is interesting, as well.
No educated person in Columbus's time actually believed that the Earth was flat.
I watched this during med school. Its a fascinating, thought-provoking story from the main character, all focused on trying to work out if hes telling the truth or not. Its really fun to have your own ideas on how he can prove who he says he is. Its light hearted, fun and good for an intellectual watch.
Completely a plot steal from them the very well know writer Robert Heinlein! ..The lives of Lazarus Long!
I just came here to say don't spoil it by watching this video first, or by even reading the title of the video, the movie is actually worth watching!
I saw it knowing nothing about it so the revelations in it were very dramatic. But watching it knowing too much would definitely weaken the effect.
@@mikeyoung9810 exactly my point. Some movies just spoil so easily...
Saw the film and enjoyed it, thanks for the memories.
