It has been directed towards people of Pakistani and South Asian descent, as well as Muslims or those perceived as such. Actually is used with anybody with brown skin. I lived in south east London in the 80s. As a West Indian, white people used that P term on me. But I always act accordingly. I’m 50 now. I survived racist Britain because I know to expect it. Say to my face and I know where I stand. Before I make my final decision.
I didn't understand the meaning of the word when i first came to England. It was used by my boss frequently. And he would swear he is not racist because he is married to a mixed-race woman.
The worst part was that he said this openly in front of the HR.
What made it more confusing for me was that he used it when speaking about our new Indian workmates.
When i found out about how racist it was, I was disappointed with my workmates who knew the meaning of the word and said nothing.

Yes and no. South Asians lived together just fine before they arrived. So yes to independence but they also made it so that the different religious groups would hurt each other (& that’s putting it mildly) so that there ultimately was a “partition”. Correction Jinnah wasn't a freedom fighter. He never went to jail even for a second. He declared independence from India not Britishers. Pakistan was created on two nation theory. British didn't want to create Pakistan.

Thats why Lord Mountbatten was the supremo who decided based on representation. Originally he asked each head of the nation/kingdom wether they wanted independence or join Indian union. Majority wanted independence but were gang pressed into joining the Indian union, which did not work out hence the 17 independence movement to this day.
The British wanted to keep Indian union as a bulk work against soviet union, not for any other reason.

No, independence and partition are two different things. Independence is referring to India and Pakistan no longer being under British rule. Partition is referring to the division of British India into a Hindu country and a Muslim country.

I'm Pakistani and I will say that the word means anybody who is non white looking. Even Mexicans, Middle Easterners, Italians get called it in the UK, but it has a negative connotation with us. I know many Indians who call Pakistanis the P word with racial undertones. Its a racist term but Pakistanis seem to have fought it off a lot. Most whites in the north are scared to say it to our faces and just do it around their dinner tables now.

Most white British people can't easily distinguish visually between more than these four 'racial' groups. As we're used to distinguishing between each other using much more varied hair colours and face shapes.
