had a good friend who took his own life a good few years back, he loved this band and especially this song, this always reminds me of him, but i always remember him smiling and hope he still is xx
For all it's later issues - T was unsurpassed in getting big name headliners for Scotland. I loved it, the mud - the rain, the tramp from parking to camp & time spent with my kid
As a throwback to the band's heyday at a packed Barrowlands and other venues...that singing of the first verse brings back great memories!. No wonder this is crowned as one of Scotland's best tracks. It's a pure classic!.
❤ keep strong no matter what comes your way were all under uncertain times our "leaders" seem to want war when they can take cover we can not they do not care about the people
I love the 80s happiest time of my life party party party and brilliant music that has yet to be surpassed such a great time to be young free and single. No x Factor shit just real bands and real musicians brilliant and Deacon Blue are one of the best
The 60's, 70's, 80's and even some 90's music were great, because the songs actually told stories within them…. unlike the garbage and junk now parading as music.
Born in 74, and couldn't agree more.. To be young and teenage thru the 80's was a blessing compared to lifestyle and music of today, 90's wasn't too bad either but 80's by far the best.
I'm 16 and was at Titp with a group of school friends. All 30 people I went with came to see Deacon Blue, and it was absolutely amazing. Would go back in a heartbeat.
this was emotional for me having been a deacon blue fan for most of my life, seen them over 20 times live so to be there for their first ever t in the park was simply magical
OMG.. started looking for my classic LOVED songs and NEVER thought this track could still be popular (albeit in 2013) with mid 20-30yr olds AND THEY ALL KNOW THE WORDS. This was my late 80's ballard song.. (ouch I'm a bloke)... prior to Sade.. and then later Sinead which blew me away.. god how those years have passed.
Dignity did not chart when first released. Made 20 when rereleased. Thirty years on and it’s still a track I could listen to every day. Ironic that Deacon Blue’s biggest chart failure became their greatest hit. That’s something they must have known as a gigging band : audiences loved it and still do. With every passing year it’s simple story becomes more lovely.
Joking aside, I've watched many videos on UA-cam of live performances, and I'm almost certain the Deacon Blue crowd put in the most effort in regards to singing the lyrics.
I've found this vídeo right now! It makes me revival some of the beatifull years of my life. Thank you for the great moments of hapiness listening your music.
Rich I’m going to see them in Brum in November it reminds me of happy lazy days around Brownsea island. All gone maybe just maybe one day I will go home!
"Dignity" There's a man I meet walks up our street He's a worker for the council Has been twenty years And he takes no lip off nobody And litter off the gutter Puts it in a bag And never seems to mutter And he packs his lunch in a "sunblest" bag The children call him "bogie" He never lets on But I know 'cause he once told me He let me know a secret about the money in his kitty He's gonna buy a dinghy Gonna call her dignity And I'll sail her up the west coast Through villages and towns I'll be on my holidays They'll be doing their rounds They'll ask me how I got her I'll say "I saved my money" They'll say isn't she pretty that ship called dignity And I'm telling this story In a faraway scene Sipping down raki And reading maynard keynes And I'm thinking about home and all that means And a place in the winter for dignity And I'll sail her up the west coast Through villages and towns I'll be on my holidays They'll be doing their rounds They'll ask me how I got her I'll say "I saved my money" They'll say isn't she pretty that ship called dignity And I'm thinking about home And I'm thinking about faith And I'm thinking about work And I'm thinking about how good it would be To be here some day On a ship called dignity A ship called dignity That ship
I was there at this concert.probally the best act best song at t in the park or as the locals call it pee in the dark. Im so glad i got to see this song.
weird story. watched this yesterday then dreamt last night that I was singing it with Ricky Ross who corrected me that it was east coast not west! had to come back to check it is in fact west! haha
I love Dougie. On Arran and visting my Scottish rellies and from Canada and at Hamilton Terrrace in Lamlash, we had Dougie on the side, and Jack MacConnell on the other. We can't wait for this covid thing to be done so that we can re-book number 23.
I've got my dignity back after hearing that must remember to take the yacht out for a spin and sail off into the sunset with my dignity and pride intact puffing on my pipe into the great beyond.
had a good friend who took his own life a good few years back, he loved this band and especially this song, this always reminds me of him, but i always remember him smiling and hope he still is xx
Sad to hear that it's an uplifting song
He is.
What was his reasons for taking his own life? Did anyone see it coming?
💙
Where ever he is I’m sure he’s smiling, listening to this song and thinking about the good times you spent together 🙏

Had the very grateful opportunity to name a ship called dignity a real ship , and was so proud , so very very proud

Now this brings back memories of the 80's. Great band and great song. Shalom from Tel Aviv, Israel.

One of the most optimistic songs ever written.

I remember this day and this song like it was yesterday- perfect 🤍🤍
turned onto this group while stationed in Europe in '80's, & STILL on my playlist!!

I don't think deacon blue even need to sing, the crowd do it for them 😊
Joking aside, I've watched many videos on UA-cam of live performances, and I'm almost certain the Deacon Blue crowd put in the most effort in regards to singing the lyrics.
A proper shiver down the spine moment.
I've found this vídeo right now! It makes me revival some of the beatifull years of my life.

When we were rehearsing for the Commonwealth Games closing ceremony, this exact recording was played in our headphones every day
Johnny Mac l
One of the few bands that can sing live superb
And 15 years later I'm still picking up litter for the council and putting it in a bag nearly done the 20 years 🙂

"Dignity"
There's a man I meet walks up our street
He's a worker for the council
Has been twenty years
And he takes no lip off nobody
And litter off the gutter
Puts it in a bag
And never seems to mutter
And he packs his lunch in a "sunblest" bag
The children call him "bogie"
He never lets on
But I know 'cause he once told me
He let me know a secret about the money in his kitty
He's gonna buy a dinghy
Gonna call her dignity
And I'll sail her up the west coast
Through villages and towns
I'll be on my holidays
They'll be doing their rounds
They'll ask me how I got her I'll say "I saved my money"
They'll say isn't she pretty that ship called dignity
And I'm telling this story
In a faraway scene
Sipping down raki
And reading maynard keynes
And I'm thinking about home and all that means
And a place in the winter for dignity
And I'll sail her up the west coast
Through villages and towns
I'll be on my holidays
They'll be doing their rounds
They'll ask me how I got her I'll say "I saved my money"
They'll say isn't she pretty that ship called dignity
And I'm thinking about home
And I'm thinking about faith
And I'm thinking about work
And I'm thinking about how good it would be
To be here some day
On a ship called dignity
A ship called dignity
That ship
Waynes should be calling him Boaby, short for Robert. Meh,
