During 1917 unrest rocked Russia, who changed government twice and then had to surrender to the Germans. But before this surrender the Bolsheviks tried an... interesting strategy. They decided not to fight the Germans but to not surrender either. This went about as well as you'd expect, with the Germans immediately pushing hard into the Russian lands, until the Bolsheviks realised their mistakes and accepted the now way harsher peace treaty. But what if they didn't, and just continued on their course of "no peace, no war"? How would world war one continue, and would the Bolsheviks remain in power in Russia?

Germany's plan for if the Eastern front during operation Fautzschlag give us a rough outline of their plan for if the Bolsheviks continued to refuse to surrender, and it doesn't really line up all that closely with the 1918 parts of your scenario described in this video - though your following chain of logic moving forward in history was pretty solid for the foundation which you chose for it, outside of my objections regarding the slightly shaky justification for how you set it up.
The general strategic posture was to maintain a defensive posture in the West, and utilize their forces in the East to seize sufficient farmland, oil and coal production, and industrial equipment so as to relieve famine in central Europe and sustain a defense in the West until acceptable terms could be negotiated in a peace settlement. The shift in strategy to strategic offense in the West was a change in plans afforded by the timely signing of Brest-Litovsk. Without that peace treaty, Germany would not have expended its strategic reserves (many of whom were some of their best-trained and most motivated assault troops) attempting to break through the Western allies and force them to sue for peace.
Conversely, Allied plans before the Kaiserschlat were to also retain a somewhat defensive posture for 1918, and their plans for a massive Spring offensive in 1919 - somewhat uncreatively referred to as "Plan 1919" - would have involved over 4 million American troops, and for the first time, truly massed tank numbers, utilizing both the improved Mark IV heavy tanks, and a great number of Whippet medium tanks.
Without Bolshevik resistance, Germany would've achieved its food and oil security objectives, and relatively little would happen on the Western front 1918. However, the Macedonian front was beginning to unravel, Italy had recovered by late 1918 and could go on the offensive again, and the Ottoman Empire was actively collapsing. I think that Germany would've sued for peace as its strategic reserves all had to plug gaps on the other fronts, and the Allied offensive in the West in 1919 breaks the backs of their largest armies in the field.
What does this change? The biggest I can think of is that brings the likelihood of Austria-Hungary's collapse as a political unit from "almost certain" to just "fairly likely". A huge part of their collapse was the thorough delegitimization of Hapsburg rule, due to the fact that people were literally starving. Achieving food security greatly dampens the forces which brought on the collapse of the imperial state. Instead, it would've had to give away substantial territorial concessions in the peace deal, but would be preserved as a smaller state, out of the interest of stability.
This is of course assuming that the Germans sue for peace when they are still in a strong negotiating position. If they wait until Plan 1919 really gets rolling, it might be too late for them to achieve a negotiated settlement, and we might instead get something more similar to the Allied occupation of Germany in 1945, but a couple decades earlier.

Actually, No. Germans IRL did secure most of farming lands in west of Russian Empire, (excluding Kuban) any lands behind that were not famous for being a breadbasket, at best there were some industry. It was just done too late, Central Powers already suffered from hunger in winter 1917. Also you forgetting about Italian and Southern front for Austria-Hungary, in 1918 Italy reformed their army, got numerical advancement 3 to 1, got modern artillery and pushed... Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire were on the verge of collapse - soldiers from these fronts would obviusly bring even more pressure on Austria-Hungary. So WW1 effectively would change very little.

Thing is that there would still be a massive labour and peasant movement in Russia, especially with a right wing and aristocratic government in charge with little wish to go ahead with land reform. Plus in the Constituent Assembly Election of 1917 in Russia, like 76% of the people voted for left wing parties from the Socialist Revolutionaries to the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks.
Realistically an alternate Russia in this world will see some sort of eventual takeover by the Socialist Revolutionaries if the right wing government doesn't go ahead with land reform (which it realistically will, as we have seen in East Asian countries, plus it would be awkward and extremely unpopular if they tried to reverse whatever land reform the bolsheviks already concluded).
So in this world either the right wing government goes ahead with land reform and then bases its support around the conservative peasantry, army and urban capitalist class, eventually urbanising (like the east asian countries post ww2), or the Socialist Revolutionaries and remnants of a possibly united RSDLP (with Bolsheviks discredited, the Mensheviks might gain an upper hand) coup/win an election/do another revolution against the right wing government, and finally go ahead with land reform, possibly in the Great Depression period. This Russia would probably go more of a social democratic path though with a stronger capitalist class and a more effective right wing government and institutions.

The most popular party in their elections the SRs was also pro "peace with no annexations" meaning peace with Germany would only be done on the condition of no territorial losses. The Bolsheviks would to the contrary face a much more united government with the left SR uprising never happening. Militarily the bolsheviks would be forced to wage war against Germany given their continued occupation of lands, meanwhile the Germans would face even more resistance with bolshevik aligned groups fighting them in Ukraine

I think the scenario ignores some things that are very critical
opponents of the Brest-Litovsk treaty such as Dzerzhinsky, Radek and Bukharin did not support Trotsky's policy of "no war, no peace" , rather they supported declaring a "revolutionary war" against the Germans in the hopes that would fuel the fires of revolution in Germany, and to fight this war wanted to reintroduce conscription and mobilize, which did actually happen to a limited extent before Russia eventually decided to sign the peace deal, but in this scenario it would be full-scale. It is difficult however to say how effective this resistance could have been, but it would probably lead to an earlier collapse of the central powers
In addition to that the signing of the treaty led to a chain of events which resulted in the revolt of the Czechoslovak legion, their occupation of the trans-Siberian railway and the collapse of Soviet authority in Siberia, which would not happen in this scenario. This means there would be no organised and unified anti-Bolshevik government (such as those established by Kolchak and Denikin) to even replace the Bolsheviks or coordinate a useful campaign against them, and instead anti-Soviet resistance would be reduced to the far edges of Russia and sporadic revolts

Maybe a conflict could arise in Turkey in this timeline? Considering that Russia would feel cheated out of Constantinopole, and Greece being bitter after being driven out, maybe the 2 would feel compelled to attack Turkey and take the lands that were promised to them. I don't know if any major power would stand with Turkey so this might be an isolated conflict.
Also, in this timeline, it is possible that Germany befriends Russia, as in this timeline they aren't so different. Both are conservative, right wing Christian nations that lost territory in WW1. The alliances depend on who ends up leading Germany.
Also, there would not be a stab in the back conspiracy in this timeline, making it so that the hatred for the Jews would be much harder justified (but, of course, still present). But, Russia would be also very anti semetic, something that could either make them better German allies or make Germany less likely to turn to violent anti semetism, as they don't want to mimic what Russia is doing.

    Great video.
I somewhat vector away from your time line in a couple of way's.
    1. The White army wins and forms a government along the same lines as the UK with a Tsar and parliament. In the elections of the Soviets, more Russians were leaning towards socialism and probably form a social democrat government. This reorients development towards more of a social development but also with the effect ww1 towards an army capable of defending itself. This may push Russia to become an industrial power given their treatment by the Entente power's.
    2. The breaking of the pre war promises in the ottoman empire, coupled with the loss of territory and the Great depression, could also radicalise Russia. Creating a scenario where they want to regain the territory lost and gain what had been promised to them. This could see rivalry with Germany begin to grow. I can only speculate an outcome. An arms race with Germany in the continent and Britain on the seas. Russia with the vast lands and great potential for industry, could also lead to British and German rapprochement. An alliance to keep the Russians in check. Or Germany seeing a potential ally in Russia, Russia ceding the baltics, Poland and parts of the balkan for Turkey and control over Persia.

Him gaining power legitimized vanguardist ideology worldwide in addition to the direct funding the Soviet Union gave for other vanguardist movements. The bolsheviks failing utterly would have delegitimized his ideology completely and its doubtful there would be prominent vanguardist movements post war.
Which would mean syndicalism, council communism and anarchism would be the most common strains.

This is a great what if alternate history video, Mr. Possible History. If the Bolsheviks still did not surrender but only continued to fight against the Germans, then most likely, they would eventually be overthrown and flee from Russia. But I'm still confused; if Russia is a democratic republic, then why is there still a Tsar? But Anyways, I think this alternate Russia would have thrived better without being controlled by the Soviet Union and would have become an economic powerhouse with great leaders and a new generation of people who had grand plans for Russia. Without the USSR, there wouldn't be no communism, and countries such as Serbia, Romania, and Yugoslavia wouldn't be communists because of the USSR's influence. Those countries continued to become constitutional monarchies or democratic nations with free democracies. Russia is more democratic and friendly towards the West; there won't be any Urankine-Russo War since Russia became the aggressor from the original timeline. But what would come of the United States? Would the USA still become a global superpower without competing with the Soviet Union? This is a great video, my friend, and keep up the fantastic work, for these videos are worth watching because of your dedication, effort, and hard work!!

Without the USSR, it also has strong effects on the outcome in Asia. particularly China and Japan. Without the USSR, the KMT Chinese nationalists still get formed but without USSR assistance its a minor faction within the Chinese civil war, and so are the Chinese communists. China is still balkanized along regional warlord lines. The Japanese do not invade China but actually manipulate the Chinese warlords and have a strong influence on the Manchurian and Northern warlords . Japanese troops still intervene from time to time to weaken one chinese warlord group if it becomes too strong. Japan is strongly affected by teh 1929 stock market crash and depression, and there is still a rise in Japanese nationalism and militarism however recovers quickly, without a threat of a united nationalist China and the Chinese warlords being under mainly Japanese economic and political control, and the Japanese have good relations with the Russians and the Russian far east , Siberia really have nothing valuable to offer the Japanese, the Japanese now view their other military and economic rival which is the USA, Great Britain and France. Ever hungry for resources, I think WW2 still occurs but its similiar but still very different than our timeline, that there is no 1941 invasion of Russia, no war in China, a bit stronger Japanese navy as more resources go to developing the Japanese navy for a future fight in South east asia and the pacific vs. the USA, GB and France.

In my opinion, the socialist revolution would have happened in Germany: continuing the war on the eastern front would have damaged the country even more than in our timeline, and produced even more unsatisfaction and hate toward the kaiser among workers and soldiers. Plus, Germany and Italy went fascists because the elites had already seen a socialist revolution (in Russia) so they were scared about the same things happening to them, in this alternate reality there are no previous example of it, so it's very likely that the German and probably Italian bourgeoisie would underestimate the workers unrest after the war, and the forces like the Spartacus League would have been strong enough to take Bavaria, the Ruhr, Amburg and even Berlin, securing a victory in a hypotetical civi war. Parallels with the bolshevik revolution actually happened in both Germany and Italy, such as the formation of soviet-like factory councils, the establishment of a proletarian army and the mutiny of sailors. If those uprising got crushed in the alternate reality too, and at the same time there is no Soviet Union, then we are all fucked, because tsarist Russia wouldn't be strong enough to defeat the nazis

I think more likely SR party would regain power. Disappointed marxists-leninists would join to more temperate left-wing parties like SR. And maybe just maybe Russia would be some kind of democratic socialist state in that alternative timeline. No rigid plans, healthy developing agriculture, but state-owned heavy industry and state-controlled market. Civil war still occures in that timeline, but the Whites would have less support from the Entente. In that timeline, because of both not confronting with western powers and not having plans of World Revolution, the new government would have less invest to super-duper heavy military industries. Because of state controlled market the Great Depression would be less dramatic, but still felt. Collectivization of agriculture would pass smoother without large scale famine. But the state stability in WW2 is an arguable question.
It is certainly my fantasy, but I think there was a golden path option for Russia in Interbellum.

  • @y.r._
    @y.r._ Рік тому +4

I disagree. If the bolsheviks hadn't surrendered, then Germany would have still beaten Russia in the war, the difference being that they would need to go on the defensive in the west (which, given the immense advantage that defence had in WW1, would not be that hard, especially with german tactical superiority over the western entente). Their campaign in the east would be more thorough and methodical, giving the germans time to reorganize those territories to extract vital resources, especially food, from them. This would stabilize the home front and not create a situation where the german high command would be compelled to launch a rushed and botched offensive, and the failed Kaiserschlacht was what broke Germanys neck in 1918. If the bolsheviks hadn't surrendered, WW1 would have been a draw all in all, with germany definitely losing alsace lorraine in the west due to the american push, but managing to stabilize the front at the easily defensible rhine and saar hills, while also keeping their eastern possessions.

"Less industrialised but more healthy" - this is some gold here. Basically as long as Russian population lives in poverty as serfs, living in wooden shacks, western countries call Russia good. As soon as Russian people move to the cities and have tap water, central heating, education and cars, all of a sudden it is "less healthy". Same happened in the 90s, when Russia was dying, western leaders were ecstatic about the success of freedom and democracy. Never mind that more people died in that period due to the collapse of medical system that during the WW2.
Tells a lot about the so called western friends.

I can tell that you yourself are a westerner, even before I went and checked on your profile. Know why? Because only a westerner believes Marxism is good today, now that we can actually learn from it and are not fed propaganda from the central soviet. You westerners live too easy lives then you turn to ideologies that promise to make it even easier despite it being proven they suck. You have a little market crash and suddenly "waaa our lives are hard, our god Marx will save us. he must be good because the CIA doesn't like him and I don't like him". And us Easterners had enough of your shit ideas, that ruined our countries and our people, so stay the fuck out of our histories, you ruined them enough. We Easterners are nothing to you but guniea pigs for you to experiment your western extremist ideologies.

Russia would be would be very lucky to able to keep control of Ukraine in this scenario. Pretty sure the Ukrainians would have something to say about that (they'd already declared independence in 1917), and with the Bolsheviks out of the picture the weaker and more divided Whites would have a harder time conquering them. I think the best they could hope for would be for Ukraine to accept a personal union, with Nicholas III being tsar of both Russia and Ukraine.

I think your post-war Russian borders are optimistic. IOTL the Bolsheviks were the strongest player in the civil war, and the war was mostly one-vs-many, the Bolsheviks fighting Whites, Poles, Balts, etc. In your timeline the Bolsheviks are busy collapsing and Russia will do a good deal worse against the nationalists. I think they'll lose Ukraine, whether to independence or (more likely) Poland. The Japanese might hold on to the Far East a good deal longer than historically. Finland will take more territory in the north. Russia contracts down to its core.

mmmh i think russia would go fascist, your justification on why they are not doesn't make much sense because Italy, who founded fascism was in that same situation, a largely agrarian, pseudo democratic rightist government dominated by nobility and early capitalism who felt like they were done dirty by ww1 despite being on the victors side. all of the ingredients, including the basis for palingenetic ultranationalism, are there for fascism. Furthermore i can see Poland and finland gaining independence, but the baltics and Moldova don't make much sense, Poland is tens of millions of people and basically needed a nation state, Finland was already basically independent, the baltics are too small to be worth fighting for full independence and on Moldova, recognising the independence of a country is one thing, but your own ally taking your territory would be a completely separate deal and Britain and France wouldnt do it if they even had a semblance of foresight.
