    The Seven Years War was a turning point in European history. The traditional European superpowers of France and Austria faced off against two European underdogs, Britain and Prussia. Both these rivalries would be largely decided in this war. Would Britain be able to destroy the French colonial empire, paving the war for British global hegemony? And would Austria be able to crush Prussia, take back Silesia, and return to their natural state of hegemony over the German states.

      @@jalghazi I think what the narrator forgets here is the effect of the Industrial Revolution, being only aa couple of decades later. Regardless of whether Louis manages to implement reforms, the changes would happen far more slowly in this new timeline, where France wins the 7 years War. The ultimate worldwide effect of this would be that Britain would end up even more powerful in this timeline, because withit already having decentralisation of power through its constituency parliamentary democracy, it can harness and synergise the effect of the Industrial Revolution, countrywide, which is what happened, in our timeline.The difference here would be that the Aristocracy in france would hold the social mobility necessary, to harness the effects of the Industrial Revolution, countrywide in France, as it was able to do so in our The Current timeline, being in such close proximity to Britain, where the Industrial Revolution originated.
      Therefore, after the 7 Years War, whatever losses Britain has, or gains it fails to make, will be taken within a few decades, as Britain would become a far more dominant military power in the short to medium-term and any war with France, during the next few decades after the Industrial Revolution, would be a crushing British victory with the mechanised and steam powered gunboats

    The fact that Spain is not even mentioned in a 20 minute video about the 7 years war is concerning. Granted, they were a declining second level power at best, but their navy and American holdings were still something to consider, and given how bizarre their participation was, entering the war when it was mostly lost in the losing side, it had a lot of potential for being different.

    I think that 1816 would be a strong candidate for a year in which a revolution of sorts would be triggered in France. That was The Year Without a Summer, thanks to the Tambora volcanic eruption, and bad harvests led to extensive hunger across much of Europe for a year. If bad harvests were the trigger for revolution in a greatly indebted France in our timeline, then a France whose debt crisis was pushed off by a generation might similarly face revolution a little over a generation later, when the next major climactic event led to mass famine.

      Depends on how much the losers are defeated.
      Crushing defeat: Sweden now a dominant power in the North and Northeast of Europe, begins an Era of self focus and creates puppet states in Poland and Russia. Their enemies so absolutely destroyed, the Swedes enjoy peace and prosperity. All the Napolion would either need to ally Sweden or lose quickly. History after Napolionic war(s) has way too many possibilities to predict.
      A non-crushing defeat: Sweden is dominant for a few decades, but can't withstand rebelions and slowly fades in power. If properly managed, the Sweds leave most of the won land before it becomes impossible to hold it. Sweden remains a powerful state in Northern Europe and doesn't decline like it did in our timeline.

    Largely agree with the conclusions here, but I would not be so certain that the French Revolution would still happen. The French Revolution was very much the result of a perfect storm of bad decisions, poor timing and general trends.
    Getting this extra income from their colonies for at least a few decades could buy the Monarchy the needed time to implement reforms (which they were already doing in our timeline).
    Louis XV could easily just not restore the parlements, which would make Louis XVI's job much easier when it comes to implementing reforms, and thus he would not need to call the Estates General.
    Even if something resembling the revolution still happens and reforms fail, it could look very different. It could end with a limited monarchy, which almost happened in 1790.

    It's also good to note that initially, despite huge population disadvantage, the French were doing better than the British in America, until around 1758. Many in Britain wanted to surrender then because they thought whatever the future would bring they would be in a worse position to negotiate. William Pitt rising to power in England was the decisive factor as he was very determined and ultimately led the British colonies to victory. Keeping that in mind, another point of divergence could be Pitt not coming to power or him dying or whatever, a pro-peace politician taking his place. France would be in a stronger position to negotiate and could very much take territory, probably at least Acadia which the British had taken in 1713 and where they were committing genocide against the French settlers and their Indian allies.

    well... let's not forget that after the 7 years war, the French navy started to modernize to the point it's one of the main factor of the Americans wining the independence war (The battle of Yorktown was won on the ground with the precious support of the French and because the British navy couldn't intervene after the battle of Chesapeake. Also, the French navy was attacking in India, blockading Gibraltar and demonstrating near Southampton.)
    The revolution came mostly from 3 factors combined:
    - The lumières, the enlightened peoples who were preaching for more liberties had given more expectation to the masses.
    - 2 years of bad harvest that caused famine
    - the cost of aiding the Americans... war is far from being cheap and the ow independent Americans didn't repay the loans nor the cost of the French deployment all around the world that served to harass the Brits and forced them to accept their loss. The French coffer were empty at a bad time and the monarchy couldn't tax the aristocracy that was its main support at a bad time (The king was not Louis XIV anymore, who could raise a brow to command the whole aristocracy.)

    Hmmm interesting point of view for this scenario. Although, there are few things you brought up that surprised me :
    -the population of New France at that time : I've always heard and read from historians and history nerds that the famous 70k people exclusively included the people categorized as "French", more precisely French people directly coming from Europe like most in the government and military PLUS "French" sedentary colonial Canadiens well registered PLUS Catholic Amerindians, but that it didn't include doubtlessly all colonials especially those wondering around the continent like "voyageurs" and "coureurs des bois", neither the Acadiens in disputed regions, and even less all non-converted Amerindian people allied to the French/Canadiens coalition ;
    -the conquest of New France : it sounds to me you imply that in this scenario the British would have to invest massively to break the stalemate there in the hypothetical situation that they wouldn't dominate and conquer easily like they did in reality ... but, from what I learned, the British did invest a lot to conquer Canada by mobilizing quite a large armada (which I believe almost half of it sank in the St-Lawrence gulf and river) to make a large army of European regulars cross the ocean, because precisely the British garrison and Colonials/future Americans and their few Native allies were unsuccesful to sweep swiftly across New France, as it was more or less a stalemate until the huge reinforcements from Europe arrived in Eastern Canada bending the New France coalition to divide forces and progressively retreat, therefore letting American colonials to sweep across the Ohio valley, Louisiana, the Great lakes and finally reaching Montreal about at the same moment the siege of Quebec city ended. So, from my point of view, the massive investments to conquer New France (especially the colony of "French" Canada) is unsuccesful this time ;
    -the unlikeliness for France to build a navy strong enough : since in your scenario France keeps Canada, I thought you would have proposed that France starts investing in the timber industry there like the British did after the conquest of the country which seems to have greatly helped to assure their uncontested naval construction supremacy afterward. Therefore, it could give France more options in India like you brieftly mentionned. But I understand that you think France is economically weak regardless the win (and not investing massively in the American revolution) (which surprises me a bit too)

    If the French don't have to help the Americans fight the British in the Revolutionary war France finances are much much better.
    Considering how the war would go even in this scenario, wouldn't France do something to strenghten their position in North America or even (thanks to a much better economy)rebuild their navy to challenge Britain's position in the seas?
    Spanish empire? Without a French Revolution Spain shouldn't lose its colonies when they did, especially without the example of a successful American Revolution, that is going to be a major change
    What about French politics for eastern Europe? In their centuries-old strugges with the Habsburgs, the French tried more than once to extend their influence in Poland and partnered with Sweden and the Ottomans; I would imagine they would try to have a presence in that region even in this scenario.
    To be honest, I'm not so convinced the Brits would have such an easy time regaining their position in India, it depends how the politics evolve in the region without them, which is hard to tell.

      You forgot about the Industrial Revolution, as did this narrator. Other narrators did incorporate the effect of that and if France won this war, that keeps it autocratic, at least for the near future, which ends up as an impediment to the Near future of France, because in our timeline, with its more decentralised power, after the Napoleonic wars and the constitution, it was able to keep up with Britain(relatively), being in such close proximity to the dramatic innovations occuring there. Autocracies always hold development and innovation back, because it threatens their position Of power.
      Before the Aristocracy realised it, Britain would have gunboats with mechanised steam power and would wreck France in any conflicts in the Following few decades, before the French could start to modernise, in a panic. The US and French revolutions happening, at the end of the 18th-century, was iIronically crucial for those countries, to Check British power, in terms of a widening disparity between the global powers and keep only marginally behind, as British inventions and innovations mechanically started to launch human, technological development into a speed of accomplishment, that made the last 6000 years, seem like a snails pace

      @@Rowlph8888 You make a fair point. To me it remains unclear whether Britain has the ability to form the capitals you need for a full fledged industrial revolution without controlling Bengal.
      Besides that the inevitable political backlash could have impredictable repercussions, maybe there is indeed a new republican revolution in Britain but it fails and the king manages to strengthen his power.

    • @Rowlph8888
      @Rowlph8888 Рік тому +1

      @@pumaconcolor2855 Well, you could be right, without the revenue from bengl, it would certainly be less impactful, but the steam engine precursor was invented in 1712 by Newcombe, before the 7 years War, so I think the Industrial Revolution still would have happened, in Britain, so consequently trains, textile, agricultural inventions.I guess revenue would be reduced(In the short-term), but a steam powered fleet would still be achieved and consequently dominance on the seas, therefore claiming territories(Such as bangal), probably would have later than in this timeline.
      As for legal, economic and political structures in Britain, don't forget that Britain was already a constituency-based parliamentary democracy, which had pretty much isolated the Crown, because by the time of the Industrial Revolution.Since the English Bill of Rights (1689), following the English Civil War, the king had gradually lost power over the next 50 years an Parliament eventually had total control (Whig oligarchy). The American constitution was drafted based on English civil and human rights legislation since the Charter of liberties (1100) and the Magna Carta (1215), as the founding fathers made many of the amendments (other than Second Amendment), based on rights that they were denied in the colonies, that they were entitled to as British subjects and that subjects in Britain were receiving. Then in turn helping to draft the American Thomas Jefferson helped laFayette, in drafting the French constitution.
      Crucially, though, if the French won the 7 years War, then there is not necessarily an American revolutionary war, and. Unlikely to be a French one, for several decades "at least" . Republican France, , although greatly diminished from the catastrophe of the Napoleonic wars, managed to start industrialising from the mid-19th-century, so it definitely would have been slower, if France remained an autocracy and the colonies would have been enabled a quick transfer of industry from Britain, if they remained under the Crown, meaning that vast natural resources from the US landmass, would have been available, to Britain, even if they didn't get Bengal.But I think industrial gunboats, would have claimed Bengal regardless. But on this topic, I repeat that I think France probably would have lost everything and then panicked and tried to industrialise to catch up

If I’m not mistaken part of the plan of the Austro-French Alliance was that France would have been given the Austrian Netherlands in the event of a victory in exchange for its assistance to Austria. The wealth of the now French Netherlands, wealth from India and French America, a more popular monarchy due to the victory, and the lack of financing an American revolution may very well completely butterfly or at least ameliorate the French Revolution. Also slight map nitpick, I believe that after Prussia’s defeat the plan was to give Saxony a strip of land to connect it to Poland which it was in Personal Union with and East Prussia was indeed to be given to Poland but Russia would be compensated for it with all lands East of the Dnieper River.

I’m not entirely sure the American revolution would still happen with a British defeat in the 7 years war since any expansion would be a British supported conquest of New France. Britain and the Thirteen Colonies would have a much better relationship by extension and, assuming Britain started taxing the colonies around the same time, taxation wouldn’t be used as a justification for war anymore since people would likely be used to it by then. In a weird way, I actually think the British empire comes out of this timeline stronger by adding the industrial might of America to it.

      Yes, this is obvious and I'm surprised more people don't mention this.The Industrial Revolution Would happen in Britain, regardless of whetther it Have any colonies, because the parliamentary democracy following the glorious Revolution, the centralised banks practising fractional reserve investment banking e.g. Lloyds and Barclays and the findings of coal and many metals in Britain. during this period would obviously need to a lower key Industrial Revolution, but ultimately the invention of the steam engine leads to steam powered gunships within 3 decades of this war and this in turn leads to "0" chance of a Revolution by the colonists.
      In fact, in our timeline, having lost the Independence war, decades later, British industrialists and engineers Were eager and openly practising consultations in London, spreading skills and information to foreign nationals, including the US, French and German states, leading to their industrialisation, a few decades later. Without total hegemony "In this" timeline these industrialists would be far more insecure and covert about spreading these ideas, especially to colonists. In fact, the state would ensure it didn't happen due to "defence of national security"
      The chances of independence in this timeline, to military force, are non-existent for the rest of the foreseeable history..Don't forget, that this timeline Leads to no chance of Germany, existing either, and therefore no 1st and Second World Wars.. This timeline leads to British and French hegemony for hundreds of Years globally

    With Prussia out of the war I don't see why France wouldn't have been able to invade the British Isles. They'd either have to completely focus on defending the channel OR defending their overseas territories. If they focus on the channel that limits their options to maneuver and increases chances that France can wipe out a significant part of their navy. Completely glossing over that possibility is a disservice to this scenario.

Even in the War of Independence, Britain kept most of its fleet back in England, to defend against French, Spanish and Dutch attacks, whilst some of the fleet and army fought effectively and almost defeated the colonialists, he also had Spanish and French support in the colonies. As an alternative scenario: What if the British won even more in the Seven Years War? I read one story (can't remember the name offhand, I apologize, but it involved this ATL traveling to OTL where a US FBI agent had to deal with them, I think), where I believe the turning point was Pitt the Elder staying in power and getting his wish to prolong the war against France and gaining even more concessions and territories in the end. Additionally, Pitt the Elder's sympathies for the American colonists keeps them in the Empire, solidifying British global power even earlier than OTL and providing a base for Britain - backed by the manpower and resources of a loyal British North America - to expand further and dominate the world through the 19th Century and into the 20th. I'd be interested to see your thoughts on such a POD.

    I agree that the American Revolution would have been less likely, but not for the reason you said. In our timeline, all that new British territory out west was declared _off-limits_ for colonial settlers. The British wanted to leave it to the Natives so as to reduce conflicts with them in existing colonies. Taxation under those circumstances basically added insult to injury. Americans were essentially being asked to pay the British for land gains they were not allowed to use. Without those land gains, taxes would still have met with political objections, but possibly not as fervently.

Also, Parliament would arguably been in a weaker political position since they did frame the taxes to some extent as compensation for "protecting" Americans from the French, which is a harder argument to make when you lost the war. Actually, I think if the French had won the French and Indian/Seven Years War, we'd have been more likely to get representation in Parliament, because it's a lot easier to say, "how can you say you don't need us to advise on our governance and use of our resources when you couldn’t even 'protect' us from the French?"

      So yea, maybe the revolution wouldn't have happened, or maybe it would have or failed. Hard to say. But one failed revolution doesn't mean that the UK would have a loyal colony there forever. A failed revolution would also have probably hampered the 13 colonies' growth, changing the course of history in unpredictable ways. The only true way France could have kept North America relies on a totally different colonisation strategy, starting from the XVIth century. As OP pointed, the major weakness of the French in America was the very low population. But as French colons lived and worked in the wild and seemed to have better relations with the Native People, they had a better advantage controlling the land. With a lot more population, especially in Québec, the English would have had an harder time conquering the Nouvelle France.
    Empires showed that demography is a key point in establishing control over territories. Look how Québec is still culturally strong and lively. It's only due to population pressure.
