Out to Sea was one of those movies that I'd watch at my Nan's a lot along with Grumpy Old Men. Their chemistry was honestly perfect , and Brent Spiner is amazing in the film. Might try to find the old vhs and give it a rewatch. :)
This was the final film of Gloria Dehaven, Donald O'Connor, & Edward Mulhare. Mulhare sadly passed away, not long after filming wrapped. It's been awhile since you've done one of these Joe, & this was a good choice. Out to Sea is incredibly underrated & deserves more attention. I always look forward to your almost cult classics, & can't wait for you to cover the Odd Couple 2.
I was glad to see Mulhare again in this review. The last thing I saw him in was that awful Knight Rider 2000 TV movie / failed TV series pilot where they killed off his character.
I'm a '90s kid, but I was raised on classic films. My mother loved this movie and it's been a favorite of mine since I was a child, and Donald O'Connor (and his dance sequence) were the second biggest enjoyment for me. The most enjoyable part for me was also Brent Spiner. My absolute favorite part of the movie, and what I always remember when I think of it, is Spiner angry singing.
This movie was hilarious. Walter Matthau's dance scene with Rue McClanahan was hilarious, and seeing her play it similar to her role on Golden Girls was hilarious as well. And seeing the older people take slight jabs at sexual innuendo or humor is what this made memorable, especially the "I used to have an ass like that" line from Donald O'Connor in reference to the female dance instructor.
There's always something adorable about their chemistry together. They might fuss and fight a lot, but underneath all that clashing and tension is a profound and deeply rooted respect for each other.
Jack Lemmon was great in comedies and dramas. Mister Roberts, Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, Save The Tiger, Missing, JFK, Glengary Glen Ross, 12 Angry Men (remake). He was one fine actor
‘Out to Sea’ has one of my most favorite jokes, when Elaine Stritch asks the pilot which Wright brother built his tiny plane, and he says, “the one you dated in highschool” 🤣
I really enjoyed Out to Sea. It's one of those movies where everyone involved knew the kind of movie they were making, and elevate the quality as a result.
Saying that scene showcasing Donald O'Connor's dancing is superficial is like saying a Judy Garland movie would be better if not for all that singing. When I see a man known for incredible dancing in a movie, I wanna see him friggin' dance!
I grew up watching these fellas. Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon were absolute treasures. My favorite movies are Grumpy old men and Grumpier old men. Hands down.
I LOVED all of the 90s Lemmon/Matthau movies. Just to see both of them with the great chemistry they had on film is amazing and I'll always be grateful that they were able to do this a couple of films before both transitioned. The critics can say what they want, but I loved this film. I mean, they aren't summer blockbusters, but they were fun. I actually think the comment about it being a film made for 1967, actually helped it, because it did harken back to an age where the movies were written for people who didn't need pyrotechnic explosions, gory sequences or young naked flesh across your screen, but a film with a believable plot with some great laughs in it that you could enjoy with the whole family.
I remember watching grumpy old men, it's sequel and out to sea a lot when me and my sister would stay the night at our grandparents house. These movies were always great and we all laughed at them. I still quote some lines to my sister from time to time. "ya gotta use hot water you schmuck!"
This and the Grumpy Old Men movies are still the only movies I've seen featuring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau as a pair. I still remember being ten years old, catching Out to Sea on cable, and being completely confused about how/why this "Grumpy Old Men" sequel was so different from the previous two. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but regardless of the film's overall quality, no one can deny the flawless chemistry between these two.
I saw that one in the theater. Partway through the movie there was a power outage. I don't remember now if I came back to the theater on a different day or just waited for the power to come back on.
Glad you covered this one - this may actually be my favorite of their 90's movies. It did remind me of the kind of an Abbott and Costello-type movie adapted for the 90s And after mentioning it fleetingly, I hope you get to My Fellow Americans.
Odd Couple is one of my all time favorite comedies. But Out to Sea is great as well. Lemon and Matthau are always brilliant together (and yes I actually like "Buddy Buddy" as well)
Its not bad. I still think the problem is that people were just sick of seeing them together almost doing the exact same thing that they did in Grumpy Old Men..Grumpier wasn't awful or anything but it wasn't anywhere near as funny which just kinda started the tarnish of oh look its Its Grumpy Old Men on a boat, its Grumpy Old Men on a road trip etc....It didn't help either that it seems like studios wanted to you remember they were in Grumpy Old Men.
I quote this movie constantly. "A good fart would give you a concussion" has been my go-to quote anytime I'm with a group that has to get in a small car.
I watched this several times when I was a kid. My parents had a copy of this. It was always a fun watch. And it was the first movie I ever saw with these two acting in, separate or together. I still have a soft spot for it.
I fucking love Out to Sea and quote it all the time. PLEASE make a video on Odd Couple 2. Easily my favorite out of this duo and a cult classic in my family at least!
Tbh, they will forever be my favorite comedic duo. Watching these with my mom growing up was some of the best times of my life. We can still quote Grumpy/Grumpier Old Men. I’ve seen this one nearly as many times, and can honestly see how Matthau would’ve fit in My Fellow Americans perfectly. I still enjoy MFA though but wish there was an alternate take with Matthau out there 😢
I still quote this movie with my family to this day, such a fantastic movie, simple, cheesy but super fun for both of these humor and drama icons!!! Great video!!!
I really enjoyed this!! I watched Out To Sea for the umpteenth time last night, as I adore Jack and Walter. It's just such a fun, lighthearted film and I'm so glad you've shone a light on it! Keep up the great work :)
So glad you covered this film! It's a true classic and one we always come back to. Their onscreen chemistry is 👌☺️ now I need to take a crap and a nap and I don't need an audience! 😅
FINALLY!!! I've been seeing the VHS sitting on top of the VCR during your ACC and I've been saying every time..."When...when is he going to do this?" Thank you for finally doing it.
Thanks for reminding me about this film. Watched it many years ago when I was younger and I liked it, I always like these two, especially together. It certainly deserves more attention. Their chemistry was amazing, the kind of thing lacking from so many other "better" movies. The Odd Couple II is also an often overlooked gem.
My question is why isn't your channel getting more press you have a Lotta great continent and a very entertaining podcast I wonder if it could be something related to the algorithm or not but still that you need more views and subscribers Seriously one of the most underrated channels on UA-cam And educational about film History.
Funny, what I remember most about this film was Rue McClanahan even though she probably wasn't in it much, but I remember being so excited to see a Golden Girl on the big screen.
Yet another movie covered by this channel that I saw in the theater when it was out. I took my girlfriend, and everyone seemed to think it was strange we wanted to see a movie about a couple of old men. We enjoyed it.
I loved this movie as a teenager! A family friend showed it to me and my sister and we thought it was hilarious. "There are things out there that can swallow you whole!" "Swallow my what?"
I remember the tv spots on TV all the time. Then it was on cable like every weekend it seems. A friend of mine actually brought this movie up to me a few weeks ago how she was a big fan of it. Definitely going to check this one out now. ✌🏼
They didn't do a bad movie together.. Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier Old Men, The Odd Couple 2 Out To Sea ⛵ lol all classics But Out to Sea has a special place in my Heart it's just a great underated comedy
I never saw this one, but absolutely LOVE Grumpy Old Men. Watched it about a hundred times on video as a teenager. I guess Martin and Short are the new Lemmon and Matthau, while the rest of the seniors stick with action roles for some odd reason.
They made OC2? I must have been off-planet at the time. Dancing Grumps at Sea, I never saw. I knew about it. It didn't call to me. And yes, the Fortune Cookie is undeniably my favourite. Right, Boom Boom?

Sidenote My Fellow Americans is vastly underrated, Garner and Jack have incredible banter aided by Peter Segal of Tommy Boy fame. My favorite is Jack asking President Ackroyd if his character can be bought. Garner is about to speak up and Jack tells him to shut up before an answer 😂 Btw President Dan Ackroyd should be a thing now.
Id forgotten this film even tho I saw it in theater at age 24 and very much enjoyed it (could my childhood love of love Boat have contributed??). This and your Golden Child video got recommended to me and Ive now subscribed. Out to Sea put me in mind of another film with longtime costars Tough Guys with Lancaster and Douglas. Loved it as a kid, thot Im not sure if its an Almost Cult or a Film Failure?
I’m a millennial and we just love this movie! It’s hilarious and I can watch the entire thing without loosing interest, it hold your attention because it’s a well made movie!
I had that Premiere Series videotape. I have a DVD of this now, even if I hate DVDs. Someday maybe we’ll miraculously get a Blu-ray, but I’m not holding my breath.

Odd Couple is their best movie for a reason. It’s the best buddy movie ever made, setting standards for showcasing male friendships for decades. I grew up watching many classics, because of my mother. And Odd Couple has to be one of the very few movies that I can pop in anytime and watch from beginning to end. It’s a shame that the blu-ray and the DVD are so awful and devoid of features. My Sunshine Boys DVD, for example, has two documentaries made in the 70’s about the inner workings of the MGM studios.
I really love "My Fellow Americans" It's a shame Matthau wasn't in it, but James Garner is really good in it, it probably ended up working better as Garner has that Reagan vibe, but more well spoken.
I would love to see one on Neighbors(1981) it is a hilarious forgotten work of some of the greats. Not to mention the chance to see John Belushi playing the straight man to Dan Aykroyd.
Out to Sea was one of those movies that I'd watch at my Nan's a lot along with Grumpy Old Men. Their chemistry was honestly perfect , and Brent Spiner is amazing in the film. Might try to find the old vhs and give it a rewatch. :)

I still say "You won't get a nickel out of me" from time to time. Loved this movie.
What's a 'nickle' -- OH, you mean a _nickel_
I'm a '90s kid, but I was raised on classic films. My mother loved this movie and it's been a favorite of mine since I was a child, and Donald O'Connor (and his dance sequence) were the second biggest enjoyment for me. The most enjoyable part for me was also Brent Spiner. My absolute favorite part of the movie, and what I always remember when I think of it, is Spiner angry singing.
LOLLLL that was great!!! Brent was really funny in this movie. Honestly, everyone was good.
Oh, that dancing scene makes me laugh every time. "It's a fast walk!"
@@sebastianmoraga4785 Everything in that movie makes me laugh. Just a good movie that deserves more praise than it got
In her book, Rue McClanahan praised Matthau for keeping the peace between Stritch and Cannon, who kept bickering.
I didn't know they hated each other. That makes the movie even better and makes her angst at Matthau seem playful
And also the great race in 1965 that’s a great movie
"The China Syndrome" as well 👍 Jack Lemmon was consistently good in whatever role he was in.
‘Out to Sea’ has one of my most favorite jokes, when Elaine Stritch asks the pilot which Wright brother built his tiny plane, and he says, “the one you dated in highschool” 🤣
"Ooooooh, well isn't that nice? We have a FUNNY PILOT!!!"
My late Grandmother (who would have been over 100 today) saw this movie in theaters at the time and LOVED it!
Spiner's rendition of Oye Como Va makes me laugh every time I see it.
"I can't believe the man actually introduces for himself"
Bewlata!!! :) Classic Spiner, this and Data!!!
I grew up watching these fellas. Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon were absolute treasures. My favorite movies are Grumpy old men and Grumpier old men. Hands down.
One of my favorite videos that this guy does, it always gives me certain movies to check out that I’ve never heard of.
I LOVED all of the 90s Lemmon/Matthau movies. Just to see both of them with the great chemistry they had on film is amazing and I'll always be grateful that they were able to do this a couple of films before both transitioned. I watched this so many times at my grandparents' house! Great movie.
My Fellow Americans was also great.
I remember watching grumpy old men, it's sequel and out to sea a lot when me and my sister would stay the night at our grandparents house. These movies were always great and we all laughed at them. I still quote some lines to my sister from time to time. "ya gotta use hot water you schmuck!"
As a kid in the 90s, 1998s 'The Odd Couple II' was what turned me on to this duo. I absolutely love that movie, as well as Grump Old Men.
Laughed till it hurt. Genius comedic delivery will never be repeated. Truly amazing.
I always loved any movie Jack Lemmon or Walter Matthau were in. Both great actors, both Oscar winners. The cast were all fantastic.
My Fellow Americans should be covered in an Almost Cult Classic review. I always loved watching that movie with my family as a teenager.
I saw that one in the theater. Partway through the movie there was a power outage. I don't remember now if I came back to the theater on a different day or just waited for the power to come back on.
Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier Old Men, Out To Sea, and My Fellow Americans are all movies I saw around my early teens and I loved them all
Glad you covered this one - this may actually be my favorite of their 90's movies. It did remind me of the kind of an Abbott and Costello-type movie adapted for the 90s
And after mentioning it fleetingly, I hope you get to My Fellow Americans.
Odd Couple is one of my all time favorite comedies. But Out to Sea is great as well. Lemon and Matthau are always brilliant together (and yes I actually like "Buddy Buddy" as well)
I totally agree, they had such chemistry on screen together
Its not bad. I still think the problem is that people were just sick of seeing them together almost doing the exact same thing that they did in Grumpy Old Men..Grumpier wasn't awful or anything but it wasn't anywhere near as funny which just kinda started the tarnish of oh look its Its Grumpy Old Men on a boat, its Grumpy Old Men on a road trip etc....It didn't help either that it seems like studios wanted to you remember they were in Grumpy Old Men.
That show is totally an "underrated" classic.
Like Buddy, Buddy as well ; )
"The best new comedy of 1967" is such a savage burn that I can't help but respect it.
As a kid, I always thought this was “The Odd Couple II”, because I remember seeing this movie paired with The Odd Couple on cable TV.
I love this series. It has helped me find so much to watch!
I first saw this with my dad at the movie theater as a kid . Loved it ! Still do !
What a wonderful movie. More people need to see this one. Thanks for showing this to the Internet!
Their movies really remind me to my father as he would love to watch them and I think that’s the reason why I appreciate them so much.
Oh you have NO IDEA how happy I am right now. This is one of my favorite movies, and I knew you’d get around to it sometime
I was 7 when "Out to Sea" came out. It was the first PG-13 rated movie I ever saw in theaters.
I fucking love Out to Sea and quote it all the time. PLEASE make a video on Odd Couple 2. Easily my favorite out of this duo and a cult classic in my family at least!
Tbh, they will forever be my favorite comedic duo.

I'd forgotten how much chemistry they have together, and this does seem worth a watch. Some of the lines were pretty funny!
I still quote this movie with my family to this day, such a fantastic movie, simple, cheesy but super fun for both of these humor and drama icons!!! Great video!!!
We miss you jack and Walter thanks for the memories
I really enjoyed this!!
I watched Out To Sea for the umpteenth time last night, as I adore Jack and Walter. It's just such a fun, lighthearted film and I'm so glad you've shone a light on it!
Keep up the great work :)

I remember seeing this in the theater. Those were an awesome duo.
FINALLY!!! I've been seeing the VHS sitting on top of the VCR during your ACC and I've been saying every time..."When...when is he going to do this?"
Thank you for finally doing it.
I remember howling at this movie as a boy with my brother and grandmother. It had something for all of us. What a great movie.
Holy cow. Haven't thought about it in years. It's classic. Thanks for putting a spotlight on it.
I'm one of the rare breed that finds this to be the most enjoyable of this duo's movies. I still watch it from time to time 🙂
Thanks for reminding me about this film. Watched it many years ago when I was younger and I liked it, I always like these two, especially together. It certainly deserves more attention. Their chemistry was amazing, the kind of thing lacking from so many other "better" movies. The Odd Couple II is also an often overlooked gem.
I'm so glad you included that clip from Dolomite. Love that scene
I saw this in theaters when I was 10. I remember liking it a lot, but not as much as "grumpy old men". Needs a rewatch
My favorite coupling is The Fortune Cookie. My favorite Jack Lemmon film is The Apartment.
"A crap and a nap" is hands down my all-time favorite line from any movie I've use it to this very day on Christmas Eve 2022
Coincidentally, I was just thinking of Lemmon as Ensign Pulver in "Mister Roberts" and how well he played off Henry Fonda and Jimmy Cagney.
Jack Lemmon is one of my top three favorite actors, so any occasion where he gets spotlighted puts a big smile on my face

I loved their 90's movies and I have this unopened VHS but never watched it. I need to watch this movie, idk why I didn't back then
You take such care with our cinema history. Thank you.
Me and my brother used to watch this movie everytime it was on HBO.
Very funny movie.
Yet another movie covered by this channel that I saw in the theater when it was out. I took my girlfriend, and everyone seemed to think it was strange we wanted to see a movie about a couple of old men. We enjoyed it.
I love these guys! They've inspired me to become a grumpy old man soon myself.
I loved this movie as a teenager! A family friend showed it to me and my sister and we thought it was hilarious.
"There are things out there that can swallow you whole!"
"Swallow my what?"
I've watched this movie every couple of years since I was 8. For sure one of my favorites.
This was my favorite of theirs. Such a fun film. I saw it in theaters with my family as a kid.
this movie was great
odd couple 2 is also great
I love this movie they were amazing together in everything they did.
I absolutely love these 2 amazing actors these 2 made my grandfather belly laugh
This is such a awesome freaking channel love your stuff man
I remember the tv spots on TV all the time. Then it was on cable like every weekend it seems. A friend of mine actually brought this movie up to me a few weeks ago how she was a big fan of it. Definitely going to check this one out now. ✌🏼
I LOVE this movie! "You ain't getting a nickle out of me!" "They'll swallow my what?!"
Damn, I miss those two. 😔
My Fellow Americans is a great movie!
I always really enjoyed this one!! I remember when it first came out how much my oldest brother enjoyed!!
"cozy isn't it"
"Cozy?!?a good fart would give you a concussion!!!"
Really cool to see you tackle another Jack Lemon and Walter Matthau film. Keep up the great work Joe!
They didn't do a bad movie together.. Grumpy Old Men, Grumpier Old Men, The Odd Couple 2 Out To Sea ⛵ lol all classics
But Out to Sea has a special place in my Heart it's just a great underated comedy
I never saw this one, but absolutely LOVE Grumpy Old Men. Watched it about a hundred times on video as a teenager. I guess Martin and Short are the new Lemmon and Matthau, while the rest of the seniors stick with action roles for some odd reason.
Thanks, Joe. Never saw this one, though I do like the Matthau/Lemmon pairing. Maybe I'll give it a shot one of these days.
I've seen this .I like it
They made OC2? I must have been off-planet at the time. Dancing Grumps at Sea, I never saw. I knew about it. It didn't call to me. And yes, the Fortune Cookie is undeniably my favourite. Right, Boom Boom?
My favourite comedy of Matthau's from the 1990s has to be "I'm Not Rappaport!" from '96
- Matthau's full of fiery energy and wit in that, alongside the fantastic Ossie Davies.
Never heard one single other Humanbeing even mention its existence....wtf?
Sidenote My Fellow Americans is vastly underrated, Garner and Jack have incredible banter aided by Peter Segal of Tommy Boy fame.
My favorite is Jack asking President Ackroyd if his character can be bought. Garner is about to speak up and Jack tells him to shut up before an answer 😂
Btw President Dan Ackroyd should be a thing now.
Can't wait for The Odd Couple 2. My fav film from the duo!
I’m a millennial and we just love this movie! It’s hilarious and I can watch the entire thing without loosing interest, it hold your attention because it’s a well made movie!
Matheau was so awesome in Bad News Bears
I had that Premiere Series videotape. I have a DVD of this now, even if I hate DVDs. Someday maybe we’ll miraculously get a Blu-ray, but I’m not holding my breath.
Amazing content as always
Yay! I remember this film. Perfect time to drop a video.
This Movie is made on my Birth Year so you know its a must watch for fans of these Grumpy Old Men.
How could anyone believe that someone who looks like Dyan Cannon would fall for a (poor) man who looks like Walter Matthau?
I find out a creepy that an old man loves a younger person especially a woman that’s creepy
I made a suggestion like a year ago on the podcast patreon, but I'll suggest it again as an ACC: The Great Race.
Blake Edward's directing Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, and Natalie Wood. Also known for having the biggest pie fight set to film.
Totally underrated movie and Lemmon steals the entire thing with a dual role as a conniving evil scientist who trades places with a drunken flamboyant dandy.
one of my favorites as a kid
Our to sea is a underrated movie. Very funny .
Jack Lemmon also directed Walter Matthau in Kotch which was the only film he ever directed which Matthau got an Oscar nomination.
I first saw this film in late 2017 on a cruise ship about 2 weeks before I went to Army basic training.
