His facial expressions and snarky delivery make him a fantastic comedic actor.
Now he has his own sitcom on AppleTV+ so Bill Lawrence definitely noticed. I was expecting a lot of comedy from him in Dial of Destiny, as in Force Awakens, but they mostly used him completely serious, which I think worked for that particular movie considering the people he's close to just keep dying.
As an Orthodox Jew, I loved this movie. It wasn't completely accurate (any Orthodox Jew, and surely a rabbi, knows when a life is on the line or even possibly in jeopardy, you can violate Shabbos, and Shabbos doesn't end until three stars are visible, not sundown), but it's heart was in the right place, and it was respectful, which is more than I can say for most appearances of Orthodox Jews in media. Plus it's funny as hell!
In other words...there's exceptions to every rule. LOL Even thought I'm atheist (& proud of it), I do have lots of respect for the Jewish faithful. I just hope this world never sees another Holocaust. One was enough...thank you very much!!!!

I'm not trying to be offensive, but whilst I'm not religious myself, I absolutely love the Jewish people. Out of all the religious folk I've dealt with, none have ever been so kind, patient, and accepting. I know it's wrong to generalize a group of people, but it's how I feel.

i loved this film growing up. the one joke that always stuck in my head was the "where you from?". "Poland". "Is that near Pittsburgh?"
I always figured it was just a cheap little joke to make fun of people not knowing geography.
Years late when I went to college and I met a guy from Ohio. I ask him where in Ohio, he says a little town called "Poland." suddenly the line from "The Frisco Kid" comes to mind. "there's a Poland in Ohio? By chance, is it close to Pittsburgh?"
"Yeah it's pretty close to Pittsburgh, why?". So I tell him, about the whole scene and he laughs, never having heard of the movie.
Either way, now I know that it was more than just a throwaway joke. Haha
One of Wilder's most underrated roles, I'm glad this film is being given some attention in this video
I guess I'd put it right in the middle of any ranking of his films, maybe #9-11

God I remember telling my mom to constantly rent the dvd from Netflix when I was a kid. Being an Orthodox Jew who would vacation in Lancaster, PA on amish farms, I loved this movie.
Please make a movie of an Orthodox Jew vacationing on Amish farms.

When I think of great Western Comedies like The Paleface, Apple Dumpling Gang, Support Your Local Sheriff, City Slickers, Maverick, and Blazing Saddles, they all have the common trait of being great Westerns first, that just so happen to have a comedy's DNA woven into the script. Much like how a great horror comedy is still a good horror movie, like Young Frankenstein.
Son of Paleface, Apple Dumpling Gang 2 and Support your Local Gunfighter are also great.

These were all quotes I grew up hearing from my mom, my grandma and their brother/son (my uncle). This was their favorite movie.
I remember seeing the Frisco Kid in the cinema. My aunt dragged me along. I was only 8 years old, but still loved it. Somehow Willie Wonka was now a funny cowboy!
I watched THE FRISCO KID roughly twenty times when it was on HBO circa 1979/80. I was 12/13 years old at the time. I loved this movie then and I still love it. It was definitely a film the average filmgoer missed at the time. I have it on DVD and watch it every now and again. So funny, so well-acted, a great buddy film, and a great western. I always felt it was "my little secret movie" because most of my friends have never seen it.
It really is such a good movie. Gene Wilder was such a talented and heartwarming performer, and the emotional beats in this movie are flawless. I believe I read that Gene Wilder considered this role as the one he identified with the most. RIP Gene, we miss you! 🖤
No he told me once he identified most with Hannibal Lector as he did the off broadway stage version. I believe it was spike Lee’s half brother Spunky. It was set in Harlem and called IM GUNNA EAT YOU SUCKA

Frisco Kid was one of my parents favorite movies growing up, it held it's place on our VHS shelf right next to Blazing Saddles with honor. It's still a movie I show anyone who hasn't seen it whenever I can.
This is one of my dad's favorite movies, so it's weird to hear someone call it an "underrated classic" when I've heard him talk so much about it for so long.
My mom loved this movie and watched it every time it came on pre-cable pay TV (ONtv/SelecTV) so I saw it many times in middle & high school. I never realized it wasn’t a popular film either.
This movie has what a lot of them lack. And that's charm. I grew up watching this movie. Back before we had a VCR, a friend of my mom's had sent us an audio cassette recording of it, so I spent many afternoons just listening to it and picturing the scenes in my head. Many Yiddish words in my vocabulary come from this film, and I was still able to quote the lines during the clips in this video.
Totally underrated - the film, the performances, the chemistry between Gene and Harrison, the dialogue. It really saddens me that this film wasn't bigger. It will always hold a special place in my heart.
The Frisco Kid, the film that inspired Craig McCracken to create the leading relationship between Wander and Sylvia, borrowing the dynamic from Wilder's and Ford's characters themselves in Wander over Yonder, a great take on classic cartoons with modern Disney animation and a defiant mold-breaking of cartoon styles every episode, making the galaxy very large and rich.

For a future Almost Cult Classic, you should do Innerspace (1987) starring Martin Short, Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid. It's always been a classic in my family. I'd be interested to see your take on it

Man, you always find the Cult Comedy Classics that we missed as kids. Glad they are getting the regulations they deserved. This film along with Blazing Saddles are great Western Spoofs.
This was such a wonderful movie. Saw it at the theater when it came out, bought it on VHS a few years later. I really wish it had been a bigger hit. =)
So many wonderfully sweet comedic scenes in this movie, its an undiscoverd treasure .... love the scene where Gene chases the chicken for food, the things Harrison says while robbing the train (which was homaged by Brad Pitt in Thelma And Louise）， the scene where Harrison shoots fishes in the water from his horse, the gun fight duel with the baddie guy, the stay with the Amish and the Franciscan priests who was sworn to silence, the voting of the jewish clerks , etc etc ... the whole movie is a gem....
As a kid, I watched this more times than I can count. Time for a rewatch!

I loved Strange Brew too The Frisco Kid and Strange Brew are actually 2 of my favorite movies. Back in the 1980's I worked in movie rental shop. I would ALWAYS try to push Strange Brew on someone!

Great movie, we watched all the Gene Wilder movies during quarantine. We called it "quarantine with Gene." Good times.
As a fan of both Ford and Wilder, I actually enjoyed this movie on both VHS and DVD - and I still do.
The Frisco Kid is one of those films I saw as a kid, and I like to revisit it every so often. And I always end up enjoying it! The last time was a couple of years ago when I was laid up with an allergy attack. Still a great movie! Might be something to do tomorrow. I was just thinking about it the other day, and watching your video pretty much clenched it for me.
Very underrated movie with a pair of excellent performances and really strong writing.

A tip of the hat for Hats Off for highlighting this underrated gem from that time we call 70's cinema. Ford and Wilder should have teamed up at least one more time after this film.
I get a bit of a Danny Kaye vibe from Gene’s performance
When I was a teenager, I told someone I didn’t know at all that I was a movie buff and he recommended this movie. At the time, it was hard to get on home video (plus DVD was the only way I watched my movies by this point and it wasn’t available on the format yet). I finally saw it about a decade ago and found it to be very entertaining. It’s definitely the kind of movie that cult classics are made of and while I wish I liked it more, it is still very well done. And Wilder and Ford have great chemistry.

I *love* this movie. And I am glad to see your recognition of it's greatness.
Gene Wilder is beautiful as the underestimated and often over his head, Rabbi to be. His heart is so full of love, and compassion, and dedication to his faith that you can't help but want to love him. Especially when he tries to make a wild fowl "kosher".
Harrison Ford is *really* in his element. Before he became associated as Han Solo or even Indiana Jones. His character is a scoundrel, but he still helps this hopeless Rabbi on his quest to California.
Throughout the movie, you see his humanity grow and evolve.
There is no way that these two characters should get along. But by the end of the movie, there is a true friendship that develops that is hard to beat, and even harder to fake. These two men have been through Hell, but they always look out for each other. Most times, their beliefs and cultures clash. And other times, you wonder how long till they kill each other. And watching this dynamic, every time, brings a tear to my eye.
I am a fan for life. It deserves high regard.
One of my favourite movies, I’ve watched it again and again. Such great chemistry between Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford, so many great one liners, great physical comedy and a happy ever after, it’s got it all.
Seen it as a 13 year old back in '79, one of my all time favorites. Plus it's one of the few movies that I can watch over and over because it is that Good😊!!!

Fun fact: Poland, OH is only about an hour's drive from Pittsburgh, PA. So Harrison Ford's joke has some truth to it.

In completing my Wilder DVD collection this was one of the last ones I was able to get my hands on, and its fantastic. Great chemistry between the two leads and unfairly forgotten imo.

Harrison Ford is super underrated whenever he stars in a good comedy. His comedic turns in this, Morning Glory, & Anchorman 2 are, in my opinion, some of his best performances. He can be quite hilarious with a good script & director. I love him in action & dramas of course but he's definitely a great comedy star as well.
The Indiana Jones films are all pretty damn funny, and most of the comedy comes from him. When I think of classic Indy moments, they're often something ridiculous happening and Harrison's hilarious expressions. Like when the vine he's holding onto at the beginning of Raiders snaps, or when he reacts to his own "death" in Last Crusade.
I'd say Dial of Destiny (after the prologue, where he is funny) is the exception, though. The character is fittingly serious after multiple traumatic events. Despite the craziest supernatural twist yet, that movie felt more grounded, which is not surprising for a Mangold film.
I remember watching this in the theater when I was 10 years old. Many of the jokes went over my head, but I loved it.

The fact is that Robert Aldrich directed this shows what a versatile Director he was especially since he directed a movie at Warner, Bros. when Jack L warner was still in charge of Warner Bros., whatever happened to baby Jane in 1962 and then in 1979 he returned the Warner Bros. to direct, this western comedy

I used to see the VHS for this all the time at the video store growing up. Often thought about renting it but never did. Thanks the cover just being a big closeup of Harrison Ford’s face I had no idea this was also a Gene Wilder movie.

This film was a family favorite growing up. We quote this movie all the time in our family culture. It shocks me almost nobody has ever heard of this movie. High road to China with Tom Selleck was also another family favorite that seems under recognized.
I saw this movie on DVD about 2 years ago. Really liked it although I watched mainly because of Harrison Ford. You can see bits of Han Solo in Harrison's character in this movie.
You see accents of the scene in Return of the Jedi when they’re taken prisoner by the Ewoks. Only in Frisco Kid, the Natives take them prisoner.

I stumbled across this movie while flipping channels decades ago and landed right on the scene where Wilder pulls off the linguistic stunt of sounding like an Eastern European Jew attempting an old West American accent and was blown away.
Gene Wilder's eyes on that DVD cover are the stuff of nightmares.
This movie and Fiddler on the Roof are my two favorite movies...Love Gene Wilder and miss his genious character interpretations.
Hey Joe, let me tell you about a cute little movie called "Dangerous Curves", it's probably one of the most 80's "80's movies" I've ever seen, the opening sequence alone is a sight to behold, it's also got a pretty well know cast in it, I highly recommend you do an episode on it, it's perfect for "Almost Cult Classics", if you've never seen it before, it's on tubi and Plex

I love this film, my dad brought me up on westerns and its rare to find a good comedy Western IMO. Have you thought about covering Cactus Jack (also know as The Villain in the states) with Kirk Douglas and an early performance from Arnold Schwarzenegger? It's basically like a live action Looney Tunes movie.

I remember watching that movie on TV years ago and being surprised by Harrison Ford's comidic timing. He always plays the straight man, which works great with Gene Wilder's mannerism. Also, Ford being half Ashkenazi Jew himself probably helped him understand the character he was facing better.

I love watching these. You somehow manage again and again to talk about Almost Cult Classics that I saw as a child. But that I've never heard anyone else talk about. Captain Ron, Summer Rental, Clifford, King Ralph. I remember the first time I saw Frisco Kid was on AMC, back when they only played old movies, as a kid.
