Something I do, which probably wouldn't be preferred for the cleanest UI but I don't mind a little extra clutter for ease of access, is I use the normal hotbars to get to actions, mounts, journals (etc) quickly via mouse. I'm on PC anyway, so might as well make use of it because it's easier to navigate menus that way. This way the shared crossbar can be reserved more for certain emotes that are used in quests, like beckon (etc) or your favourite emotes for the quickest access. For the shared crossbar, I tend to use 8 instead of 3, just to help with mental spacing whenever I'm sorting them out, which is often since I can never quite settle on a setup; I think I'm getting closer to an ideal setup now though.
I watched other controller setup guides and for the most part they were great and served their purpose. However, I never knew about adjusting the input timer. Dear goodness, you controller players... are a different breed, all of these stuff makes my head spin.... im a mouse and keyboard player and i can use one hand for 30 buttons (i set up my key binds that way, it is possible yea.) but controller players hekk props to you to be able to play like that.
I’ve been playing with a controller since the beta and I’ve only ever used one hotbar-I’ve become a master at switching between them to hit my buttons. But at level 90 I be getting STRESSED and I’m hype to give this a try after so many yearsss
Thanks for making this! Im returning after 6 years out of the game, im one of those weird magicians that was running with 1 cross hot bar and using L2+R2 and R2+L2 for my longer CD abilities but this looks to be much simpler to use and less fumbly.
Maybe I'm a wizard, Iunno. but I definitely do things differently than you do. I like having just one cross hotbar on screen, and, since I don't like double tapping (especially in combat) I use expanded rather than wxhb a lot. Likewise, aesthetically I don't like seeing more than one xhb, so, in order to keep track of some longer/less frequently used abilities, I have 2 vertical (keyboard) type hot bars to keep track of some of my abilities. In order to access Sprint, I use "Execute Macro #99" on my right thumbstick. Never have to think about it, just press it and good to go. I do use the WXHB but, that's where I keep my mount roulette lol and other misc. things like teleport, and chocobo stances. likewise I don't keep them displayed like you do, AND I "need" Dpad + Dpad / Buttons + Buttons, because, even at the start of ARR when they made the XHB, for w/e reason, the default style just didn't click with me. For example, say I have Tetragrammaton on RT/R2 + Up, with the default style, for some reason, I'd end up hitting LT/L2 + Y/Triangle instead. Dunno why. Would just get my wires crossed I guess. The other style absolutely insta-clicked with me lol
i actually prefer just using singles, but i’ll have the “upper” hotbars set as visual queues so that i know which abilities can be chained if i need to see it. i’m too used to just pressing r1 to switch, but being able to see the other hotbar is nice, i just can’t practically use it since i’m so used to my old way lol double tapping triggers to access the uppers actually slows down my casts, especially when switching from upper right to upper left. good guide, though~ i’ll be using it for sure, just not in the intended way lol
Great vid! Been binging your macro vids today. I actually do somewhat the opposite of you for my extra XHBs. I have XHB1 as my main single target/raid HB and XHB2 as my AoE trash mob HB. A quick tap of R1 and I'm able to quickly swap while running through the dungeon. For the extra abilities, I have use R2+L2 and L2+R2 mapped to XHB3. WXHB is set to hotbar 8 and that is my shared one for all of my utility actions like teleport, sprint, etc. This unfortunately means I can't do the stacked XHB, but if I need to track CDs, I just add a normal HB and add the action there like you mentioned.
Im a brand new user (actually played on ps4 a few years ago, but didnt even finish Realm Reborn lol) and im now playing on xbox. The hot bar toggle was getting to me, but i just went with it because i didnt know there was another option. Im level 53 now (whm) and im going to try this. Thanks, because i had absolutely no idea i didnt have to swap swap, make sure im back on skills and not pulling up a menu instead of healing, etc etc lmao.
I actually use all the available hotbar options given. I have the R2+L2 and L2+R2 hotbars set up mostly for burst abilities and actions that have long CD. I have the WX hotbars that you have set up for “oh shit” abilities, movement actions, and LB. And then my GCDs are on the general cross hotbar. This way I have access to cross hotbars 1, 2, and 3 So a total of 48 accessible buttons to press. The only issue is that I would need to somewhat memorize the R2+L2 and L2+R2 button as those are not in immediate visual view. But it’s kinda cool to not see those buttons because it allows me to practice intuitive play instead of staring at my hotbars all the time.
I am just finding this. Really helpful. HUD and crossbars have always been challenging for me. I need a set up on Paladin if you don't already have one. I will be checking when I get some time. Thanks.
I play with only one hotbar and everyone asks how Im able to. I honestly just hit RB1 then hit it again to go back. Haven't had any issues at all. I was recommended this and had no idea what anyone was talking about. Going to try this and see how it feels.
I had gotten really good with old summoner and Monk using single cross hot bar. When it became second nature to do it. I didn't even know a set up like in this video was possible so I'm excited to try it after not having played in a couple years.
Good evening! In your video, I see you scrolling over your abilities in the XHB and WXHB and the ability descriptions show up. 1:44-1:49 How do I scroll over my abilities and also have the tooltip description show? I have all my help HUD elements active and enabled--but can't see the spell description anywhere. Thanks!!
Man i really really hope now that xbox players are coming in youre guide blow up for my last 2 weeks of this beta i have lived off these guides lmao I haven't played since it lauched on ps4 and it was just arr and these have been so amazing
I'm not sure if you have one or not but a collections how too guide would be awesome i was absolutely struggling last night trying to figure it out and it didn't click till I hit 60 and and met the ophange girl for delivers
I use 3 hot bars technically but the 3rd is just so I know what abilities are off or on cooldown that I can’t readily see on hotbar 2. I’ve been playing since 2014 and too stuck in my ways too change so I straight up memorize where my buttons are on the second bar, per job lol.
Hahaha i been playing with 1 hotbar for months and i am now 6 missions away from beating post stormblood also thx for the tip about extra hotbars i appreciate it❤
Double tapping the triggers sucks IMO. If you go to the the Custom tabs in the Controller settings, set "Expand Controls with LT+RT" to hotbar 2, but also set "WXHB with double tap" to hotbar 2... what happens is glorious... your double tap hotbar will still be displayed with all the skills, but you can just hold RT then pull LT to bring up the 2nd hotbar (or vise-versa). It's a LOT faster and cleaner than double tapping, at least for me. Had to resort to this to play Astro and effectively play cards. So holding LT is all my damage spells, then all I have to do is pull RT (with LT held) and BOOM all my cards are there. RT is my healing spells (mostly single target) and RT + LT is all my AoE spells. I would also turn off the "return to hotbar" option for my setup.
You lose out on 16 slots doing that though. What you can do to make double tapping easier though, is increase the time needed for each tap. I think the default time is set to 0.25 seconds or something, but I change it to 0.5 seconds and it feels way better to double tap. You can tap it slower and it's easier on the fingers~
@@halosaft with my setup, you have 32 slots visible and available. You can still use double tap with it, but it also gives you the option to just pull the other trigger.
@@Syn-eo7yv If that works for you then great, I have those 32 slots for job skills, but then I use the other 16 slots with R2->L2/L2->R2 for stuff like mounts, sprint, often used emotes, targeting marks etc~
@@halosaft My sprint and mount is bound to clicking right thumbstick (as well as the duty support.) And everything else is non-combat, so I just switch to crossbar 4-10 for that. The only time Ive ran into a problem is with scholar, since they actually have more than 32 useful skills

Thank you so much!!! I've been trying to figure out how to do this for like two days. You're wonderful and I hope you're doing well ❤❤❤
I’ve been playing one hot bar for years and it was such a challenge. I’m gonna try this out now and hopefully it makes healing much easier
Thank you very much i was struggling on how to swap my commands for every job
now i can switch without having to put my commands new together
Bro thank you so much, I have been trying to learn how to do this for so long, makes things so much easier
Thanks, i thought i wasnt doing it right, bit if you listen to all the steps it works. Trust the process and dont skip steps.
As someone who was only playing with one hot bar for nearly a decade, thank you so much for this video 😅
I've actually felt the same thing, been playing (after 6 years out) and felt totally out of sync with everything. This is so helpful
Hell yeah. My pc died and I really just didnt feel like messing with it. Switched to playstation but only one hotbar was really limiting.
This video was great!
thanks, all i could find were old videos! i switched to ps4 but usually use a keyboard and mouse. lately my back is kinda killing me though so i wanted to learn controller so i could lean back and play LOL. you doing god's work.
haha I am so glad it helped! Yea I tried get it to pop up so it can be the current video for controller players haha
Dear goodness, you controller players... are a different breed, all of these stuff makes my head spin.... im a mouse and keyboard player and i can use one hand for 30 buttons (i set up my key binds that way, it is possible yea.) but controller players hekk props to you to be able to play like that.
This setup is exactly what I needed! So glad you made this vid :D
HUGE help, thank you so much for this.
You're goated for this😮 didn't even know this was possible
Of course!
Thanks for the guide. Setting it up so I can play on my Steam Deck and it felt overwhelming. Glad I found this video.
6:05. Having the extra space is actually really nice. Add a few skills you don’t use often to R2+L2 and you get all that space and lose very little.
i actually prefer just using singles, but i’ll have the “upper” hotbars set as visual queues so that i know which abilities can be chained if i need to see it. i’m too used to just pressing r1 to switch, but being able to see the other hotbar is nice, i just can’t practically use it since i’m so used to my old way lol double tapping triggers to access the uppers actually slows down my casts, especially when switching from upper right to upper left. good guide, though~ i’ll be using it for sure, just not in the intended way lol
Omg thank you! You're a lifesaver!
Absolute Gamechanger brother GOATED
Ty for the video. Just started playing on Playstation & wasn't sure how to make it work. But helped allot. Ty
My god. This is an absolute game changer thank you
Thank you this has help me soooo much today! I need it fo rmy healing etc
An absolute game changer for me. Been cycling through sets like a moron for ages
Thank you very much for the tutorial, this just made managing everything so much easier!
This way I have access to cross hotbars 1, 2, and 3
So a total of 48 accessible buttons to press.
The only issue is that I would need to somewhat memorize the R2+L2 and L2+R2 button as those are not in immediate visual view.
But it’s kinda cool to not see those buttons because it allows me to practice intuitive play instead of staring at my hotbars all the time.
This is a great video as I get back into XIV.
I’m new on XBox and this works great! Thank you!
This is going to be a god send for me. Honestly.
I am just finding this. Really helpful. HUD and crossbars have always been challenging for me. I need a set up on Paladin if you don't already have one. I will be checking when I get some time. Thanks.
Yep I do it’s up on the channel :) under controller guide playlist
This was helpful. I have a stacked set of thingies now. Thanks.
How do you move the actual bars on screen when editing?
I play with only one hotbar and everyone asks how Im able to. I honestly just hit RB1 then hit it again to go back. Haven't had any issues at all. I was recommended this and had no idea what anyone was talking about. Going to try this and see how it feels.
I had gotten really good with old summoner and Monk using single cross hot bar. When it became second nature to do it. I didn't even know a set up like in this video was possible so I'm excited to try it after not having played in a couple years.
What did you choose
I thought R1 was the only way for controller.
Thank you for the guide Sir.
It will change my sprout life
Really excellent video! Helped me a lot with configuring the controller so its a breeze to select which ability's i want when i need them.
Good evening!
In your video, I see you scrolling over your abilities in the XHB and WXHB and the ability descriptions show up.
1:44-1:49
How do I scroll over my abilities and also have the tooltip description show?
I have all my help HUD elements active and enabled--but can't see the spell description anywhere. Thanks!!
This is really cool. I might have to try this.
Man i really really hope now that xbox players are coming in youre guide blow up for my last 2 weeks of this beta i have lived off these guides lmao I haven't played since it lauched on ps4 and it was just arr and these have been so amazing
Thank you!! I am really hoping as well!! 🙌🙌 ima just keep pushing and improving
I'm not sure if you have one or not but a collections how too guide would be awesome i was absolutely struggling last night trying to figure it out and it didn't click till I hit 60 and and met the ophange girl for delivers
Thank you for this video haha I only had one hot bar haha now I’m gonna do this
Bro, tysvm for this vid, with all the changes to WHM (haven't played since Storm blood) I was completely lost tbh
This is amazing, I’m finally able to use my secondary hotbar 🙏🏽💖
Omg i needed this idk how i played on one hotbar for 5 years and survived this long lol
I use 3 hot bars technically but the 3rd is just so I know what abilities are off or on cooldown that I can’t readily see on hotbar 2. I’ve been playing since 2014 and too stuck in my ways too change so I straight up memorize where my buttons are on the second bar, per job lol.
yeeee its hard to change habits
Thanks for the detailed guide. Easy to follow
Hahaha i been playing with 1 hotbar for months and i am now 6 missions away from beating post stormblood also thx for the tip about extra hotbars i appreciate it❤
Thank you very much. This was most helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks, its super useful!
I love you!!!, I’m on pc but love using controller and this helped so much!!
Glad to hear!
I’ve been playing with a controller for years with only one hotbar and didn’t know you could do all of this lol. I’ve adapted to it though.
