@@Nossey you repeat the line many times because macros cannot be GCD qued like regular abilities. this helps to ensure that the ability goes off with one click instead of mashing the button. that is also why you will see lines in crafting macros where s = time in seconds. typing in one action after the next means whatever line was in the middle out of three lines will just be skipped due to cooldown still rolling. If you don't know what the gcd que means/how it works, it's the margin of time where you can hit an ability before it actually finishes coming off cooldown and the command to perform the ability is set into a short 'queue', thus making it the first thing to happen after gcd finishes. It's a matter of milliseconds, but it means you can line something up to happen before actually seeing the global cooldown finish. Abilities (actions, anything executed via /ac line), put into macros can't do this. That means if you're in the habit of queing abilities already and thus only hit the button once or twice too early, it simply won't go off OR it will be interrupted by the next ability you hit that IS actually in que. merror off removes the error ping on trying to execute an ability before you're able, but you can turn off error sounds other ways too.
I mained as DRG, so impulsively coming into DRK without any prior tank knowledge is devastating. I'm literally trying to copy what I've seen other tanks do, and it's been... a terrifying yet okayish experience. I know I'm doing good by making sure the enemies are always targeting me, but I can feel the inner DRG wanting to jump around and move about whenever I'm about to be attacked 😭 thank you so much for this video, this was a wonderful guide, and I'll definitely popping into your DRK guide video later so i can look like a cool and stunning edgelord
This is a pretty solid video! I do want to mention that in dungeons, there's a slight difference between how you should be using your cooldowns as DRK versus the other tanks. On most tanks, your short cooldown is primarily a mitigation and healing tool, meaning that it should be used independently of your other cooldowns. But on DRK, The Blackest Night's shield works best when paired with another mitigation ability, as that mitigation combined with the barrier translates to additional effective shielding. For me personally, I typically open with the short cooldown, then use a long cooldown (Rampart/30%), repeat the short cooldown, then if necessary, use one of the secondary cooldowns (Reprisal/Arm's Length) and one more short cooldown if it's particularly bad. But on DRK, I would use a long cooldown + TBN, then continue using TBN off cooldown while using Oblation after the long cooldown runs out and Reprisal/Arm's Length after Oblation runs out. It's very important to not blow all your MP on Floods to ensure that you have enough MP to be using TBN off cooldown; if you open a pull with two Floods, then use it off of your TBN Dark Arts procs, you should be more than fine.
This is the guide I was looking for! I've played since ARR but always had tanxiety in dungeons and raids because it's so difficult to find a tanking guide that actually talks about how to do wall-to-wall pulls and where/when to actually use your defensives. I've always wanted to play DRK but never had the courage to do so, but this will definitely help me!
lol yesterday i was leveling up dark knight and gun breaker so i can start playing tank more and today i’m thinking maybe i should watch a video then i see you post a tank guide🧌
Love the guide, not to mention the production of the video. Just to add, 'kitchen sink' refers to the 'everything but the kitchen sink' saying about when you move out of a house and leave nothing behind.
Thanks for the guide man !! Been tanking for over a year and i feel i miss something that i could improve my tanking and here the guide where the things i should do but didnt do it, with this guide i will improve myself for sure !! Thanks again and looking for future content from you. "Just Subscribed"
A couple things you've forgotten to mention: - Read your actions! You have two-ish rotations: Boss and trash (anything other than a boss) - Make sure you have other things handy on your hotbar such as potions, food, mounts, sprint, and limit break. Some people also like it when you have a ready check and/or timer. - Use cool downs (anything that's not a rotation) in between actions of a rotation. Your healer will thank you, and your damage output will increase. - In general, but especially as a tank who normally can't see anyone past the giant boss/horde in front of you, change your 3rd person camera angle to 100. Being able to see those outside markers of incoming AOE really helps. - Turn your sound up! Bosses have noises for incoming attacks. Not needed (which is especially deaf inclusive), but it helps. I used turn in-game volume down (listening to my own music) until a friend commented on a noise a boss made. - If a DPS is pulling before you, let them die to assert dominance. As both a tank and a healer 😂🙃 - Two meals an hour are a small price to pay for +3%experience and damage.
I just love the let them die part XD As a healer and tank main I have very much done this and occasionally shirked onto that one dps who refuses to move out of an aoe then trash talks the healer.

Dark knight used to do slightly more damage as a tradeoff (2%) but then the Warrior playerbase got mad, because the medic tank doing 2% less damage was unacceptable apparently. Stop playing Dark knight, it's not allowed to do anything better than Warrior.

Hi! I’ve been watching a handful of y our videos because I recently finished core Shadowbringers content alternating between Scholar and Ninja, but I’ve been really wanting to get into tanking and to play one throughout Post-Shadowbringer and into Endwalker content. These guides have been amazing and have been helping me get over my tank-xiety, well, really it’s the pull-size of trash mobs that makes me so nervous. But I really love your content, keep up the good work 😁
TO BE FAIR - before Holy Shelltron had its self-mitigation feature changed from block to % damage mitigation, paladins SHOULD have been the offtank in most groups because Intervention was just a better damage mitigation tool than Holy Shelltron in level 90 content.
Video was great! I'd say that war definitely the most main tank of main tanks and drk is definitely the most off of off tanks, i think gnb and pld are both hella interchangeable as tanks. Idk if im the only one that feels that way
Use corner to group up the trash mobs better. Bug mobs spread and bump off eachother but if you stop you pull in a corner they will naturally group themselves into a tight pack.
For warrior there is barely any reason to use holmgang in trash packs anyway. Nascent flash/bloodwhetting is basically an invuln in trash packs on a 25 second cooldown. It's insane. I think the only dungeon I would use holmgang is mount gulg with the massive pulls that dungeon lets you do. God I wish they would let you do that more often... I hate that there isn't a single dungeon in EW with even a triple pack pull.
I still get tank anxiety and I'm only lvl 52 on my WAR, but after I figure out a dungeon or boss for me it feels better than all the explosions my black mage does.
First time I played as tank, a dps went in front of me and pulled the whole dungeon, I got embarassed and never played a tank again... Maybe i'll try it again sometime
wtf, i thought you were supposed to make *bad* jokes? there were some actual bangers in here. and where the heck are my signature Azu pronunciation mistakes for me to giggle at??? 0/10 video. Side note: it might have been nice to include what parrying/blocking actually does damage-wise since the game doesn't make it extremely clear. I always thought initially that these completely mitigated an attack and then I was confused why I was still taking damage while Bulwark was active lol.
Everyone tells me gunbreaker is the fastest pace and most fun tank I’m level 70 and only have a couple of weavable moves does it get better or am I just wasting time leveling it to try to get to the point where it’s fun
I have played with so many tanks as the off-tank and the main tank never does Reprisal to help with the damage mitigation for moves in alternation with mines. Literally went through a whole big raid with multiple drops with me being the only person doing mitigation for the most part as a DRK, and then the other being a PAL or GNB only being offensive and not helping with even using Reprisal in their rotation. I think a lot of new tanks don't really want to help with the second mitigation process to make a run easy.
The slang "kitchen sink" actually comes from WW2. The original saying is "everything but the kitchen sink". Which means to use everything except the kitchen sink.
Depends on the dungeon, 2 groups is always a good bet but sometimes a dungeon allows more, some dungeons you should go for more but some it might become extremely scary (Mt Gulg) it's just about experimenting, you'll learn the pulls as you go and if you're new to a dungeon the group will understand
Kitchen sinking isn't throwing everything into a sink. It's throwing everything at a problem except the kitchen sink. (Basically a more extreme way of anything that isn't nailed down) Or even throwing everything at a problem including the kitchen sink.
As someone who also loves War's kit and all the Fell Cleaves... I agree, F*ck Warrior, the devs fav OP baby excellent taste in OSTs btw, especially Tekken
I think warriors are good off takestoo just cuz of how naciant flash works. Give your target your main tank a barrier and healing when you attack. It's like you say, warrior only has strengths.
Can you explain what you mean here? Sorry I’m new to FFXIV. Played MMORPGs before and played tank in WoW but this game is much different as is the terminology lol.
@@DuvalRyprarms length reduces mobs auto attack speed. Less attack speed = less damage output. If you're dps and you're big dckin the damage, you will pull the aggro from the tank. If this happens, and you use arms length, that mob will now do less damage, and the tank did not have to use any cool downs to accomplish this. Hope that helps.
Best/Worse thing of LD is when everyone is dead, you use it in the boss. You kill the boss. But die because You don't have anything else to kill. Rather funny.
A big ass red attack with rotating squares on the main tank with a literal huge arrow pointing to them. It's hard to miss and very obvious when you see one. Not to be confused with a stack though, which is an orange/yellow attack with a circle around it and arrows pointing to the person. Easy to tell the two apart, but not to someone who doesn't know what it looks like.
And if their Green; Did you remember to press a button you silly sprout? Serious question, how and where in the settings to you make it so your Tanks have blue health bars, Healers have green and DPS have red?
It's usually one tank getting a debuff that increases the damage he takes, other than that you just learn it fight to fight and they only appear in extremes, savages or ultimates
So how do people know how many packs of mobs to pull for a "big pull"? I hear wall to wall all the time, but ive died far too many times to believe that lol
As a new tank. I pull what I'm comfortable with...usually 2-3 packs. Unless theres an end game healer. Or sometimes I will ask the healer how many packs they are comfortable healing through. Just by doing these couple things, my tank journey has been very enjoyable. Hope this helps!
I appreciate your video and your snark for sure! But the arguments over who is the "best" MT and OT are tiring, and I wish that your overall theme of the video of "All tanks are viable" stood more true here vs you addressing it in your enmity section. Most people take that opinion way too seriously, and it ends up creating provoke wars over nothing. In high-end content, with seasoned players, the argument rarely comes up, and it shows how fresh folks are when they come into PF and try to bully their way into a spot just based off their chosen job. The amount of times I have stripped the boss off of other tanks outside of Savage who hold this tank superiority complex by simply doing more damage than them (zero non-swap provokes, that's for tanks who don't know how to hit the boss) is startling. Good tanks know to use their mit and self-sustain regardless. You are not a burden on healers for holding aggro if you're not a WAR or PLD. If your takeaway from this video is "but which tank is the BEST?" you missed the entire point of how to improve yourself.
Why do you think PLD and WAR are good main tanks while DRK and GNB not? You never really elaborated on the reasoning. WAR makes sense, self sustaining and all but PLD always felt more OT since they have so many support skills.
It's all about self sustain. Reality is outside of WAR (amazing) and DRK (absolute garbage self sustain), GNB and PLD are very interchangeable for main-tanking as they have very similar self sustain. PLD is just preferred due to GNBs job design making mitigation and moving the boss tougher when not experienced with the fight.
@@THiiro Thanks for the answer. I never really considered one tank to be better than another when it comes to "moving the boss" since they're all melee classes. I guess PLD is the exception with the range combo but that's not always up. What do you think makes GNB more challenging to play if moving the boss becomes an issue? Do they have a lot of animation locks that stop them from moving?
@@maximevincent3834 GNBs have the highest APM of the tank jobs and every 30s you're in your gnashing fang combo which means you use a GCD and the weave in an oGCD for 3 GCDs, every minute you're double weaving 2 oGCDs between your GCDs so moving a boss during those windows is really awkward as you don't want to lose uptime
@@maximevincent3834 Yeah essentially what the other guy said, at least once every 30 seconds you have to use melee range off global cooldowns following your GCD. The range is what makes it tough as you need to almost bounce off the boss at least far enough to pull it forward, else you'll either clip your GCD or the boss won't move
Drk has the worst mit by a mile lol tho if being technical war has the worst personal "mit" but the best sustain. Ie it takes more dmg but heals it up. Drk being the "anti magic" tank makes it useless as a mt because its mit sucks except the very rare magic buster or autos. Also, gnb is a better mt than pld. Has better sustain and enough % mit buttons that you can even mit autos and still have enough mit for the next buster. Holy sheildtron is good but its nowhere near heart of corundum either.
You're talking way to fast. I get that's your cadence but it's coming off as "we should know this already" and.....we don't. I feel you had a lot of really good information but I just couldn't understand it because of how fast you we running through concepts. I'm a 100lv BLM and our rotation is crazy at end level but a lot of people that teach BLM have a really slow speaking tempo even thought they accents that are not American. Tank is the number 1 role in this game I mean the healer class really only is there to support the tanks, that's not how it works in any other MMO that make every DPS job harder and DPS better know what their doing because it not a grantee they will have the healer help them if they take damage since the healer job in this game is to keep the tank alive. Anyway I said that to say for important roles like this if you don't want to change you tempo because no one else complained or because your tempo is associated with your brand maybe you could type out the important things you're saying in the video so those of use who are Americans can pause the video and read what you said in a chat box. Sorry if I'm being way to judgmental ahhh i who cares what i think sorry about this
Warriors have only strengths. Yes, but by the time I finished farming armored bear mount I got objectively worse at tanking and needed to relearn actual tank mechanics for GNB farm. WAR is so boring to me I almost lost any will to actually finish the grind.
@11:08 - no one who makes these guides needs to say this, it's just emotional insecurity being projected. If you're confident in your teaching ability with this guide, people will naturally wall-to-wall, as they'll have no excuse. If they don't naturally wall-to-wall, their valid excuse is that your tank guide is beyond sub-optimal at achieving its purpose: it's simply not performing the bare minimum effort necessary to succeed Nothing to get Guidexiety about tho! Practice makes perfect, and counterproductive psychology like that is an easy mistake to make for beginners to guide-making
Paladin is 100% an off tank. As in take it off your roster and use a warrior until SE decides to recognize there is no reason to bring a paladin other than you don't have a warrior
Please don't teach people to use sprint like that in dungeons, even as a last resort - that's the worst thing you can do. Very rarely will it actually have a positive affect as the mobs will easily catch up and hit you anyway. If you are in a situation where literally everything is on cooldown and you DO need to sprint, use it to put distance between you and the mobs to give time for healer to run back or your cooldowns to return while allowing the ranged (if you have) to pick them off thinning the herd. Given how all tanks now have a frequent use short cooldown mitigation tool it should never really be needed anyway.
@@AzuriteTV you need to go and move Infront of your PT and faceback, not exactly satisfying. Being an OT makes it easier to use passage during rotation or burst
how do you struggle at being a tank in this game? Theres one way. One Possible way. Granted this way is bigly possible. You leveled via roulettes and never actually had to deal with mechanics that could kill you OR You leveled via MSQ, and also never had to deal with mechanics that could kill you. FF14 is absolutley terrible at teaching you to play the game. Not to mention, it cant even teach you to play a tank in a meaningful way, because playing a tank sits on a very thin line just above being meaningless. It is possible to get to max level and have NEVER done any content where you use all your max level abilities. Its possible to do all raids and dungeons from level 1 to 90 with out using a single mitigative ability. Then when you search for guides, well google cant help you because all USEFUL information is on a discord. And if you get a video link.. its dumb shit like this, where its more about RP than about USEFUL information. You can watch some creators content, like xeno. but really you need to just know 1 thing to tank, turn on you Enmity buff, aka tank stance.
Funny.. the "b**** behind the shield" job is also the same job that has better defense, party utility, and damage than your precious DRK, which ironically relies on shields more than PLD
Drk is so horribly bad at sustain😂 I use all tanks but I prefer gnb and war and paladin I just never play drk even tho its max level because its sustain is just cheeks😂

I feel attacked by that "falling asleep" comment. I did NOT get woken up by that and feel embarrassed... that would be crazy...
Anyway, great video!
The slang "kitchen sink" actually comes from WW2. The original saying is "everything but the kitchen sink". Which means to use everything except the kitchen sink.
How many groups should I pull at once I usually pull 2 groups than less there's a wall blocking me?
Depends on the dungeon, 2 groups is always a good bet but sometimes a dungeon allows more, some dungeons you should go for more but some it might become extremely scary (Mt Gulg) it's just about experimenting, you'll learn the pulls as you go and if you're new to a dungeon the group will understand
can anyone tell me the armour set shown in the thumbnail? i'v been going crazy trying to find it
I am new to ff14 i m stil wondering how you create the style of horn from your charakter, i couldnt find this option in the editor.
It’s a a headpiece. You can find them on the market board or golden saucer
Kitchen sinking isn't throwing everything into a sink. It's throwing everything at a problem except the kitchen sink. (Basically a more extreme way of anything that isn't nailed down)
Or even throwing everything at a problem including the kitchen sink.
As someone who also loves War's kit and all the Fell Cleaves...
I agree, F*ck Warrior, the devs fav OP baby
excellent taste in OSTs btw, especially Tekken
Decent guide for new people, but what gear set is that in the thumbnail? I don't recognize it and it looks pretty good
Fierce Tyrant's attire. It's a reward from the current PvP series.
My brain just collapsed
I only saw the subscribe button light up so I'll only click that
I love you

15:19 I answered Glamour lmao
Awesome Video and can pls someone tell me the name of the sword at 02:44 ? It looks awesome. 😍
How relevant is this for Dawntrail? Curious. I'm having fun with DRK, but I'm a little bit nervous about actually tanking hardcore stuff.
It's still pretty relevant tbh, I do intend to update it, but it's not at the top of my priority list
whats that armor you're using at the start of the video?
Tank guide - play warrior nuff said
I mean, it's the best at everything for no reason now. It's so fucking boring though.. I wish they never buffed it.
Obligatory-
"You suck at tanking xdd"
5:23 HOW ELSE AM I SUPPOSED TO USE MY WINGS ON THE PARTY BRO ????😭😭
I think warriors are good off takestoo just cuz of how naciant flash works. Give your target your main tank a barrier and healing when you attack. It's like you say, warrior only has strengths.
If I didn't invuln in a dungeon, the dungeon wasn't hard enough.
serious question, what earrings are you wearing?
nvm I found em, Baron Earrings
18:50 I mean if the dps rips aggro in the trash pull they should absolutely hit Arms Length to give you free mitigation.
As a tank main, I do this all the time when I have to play as a dps. Don't know why so many people don't do this
Can you explain what you mean here?
What constitutes a "tank buster"?
A big ass red attack with rotating squares on the main tank with a literal huge arrow pointing to them. It's hard to miss and very obvious when you see one. Not to be confused with a stack though, which is an orange/yellow attack with a circle around it and arrows pointing to the person. Easy to tell the two apart, but not to someone who doesn't know what it looks like.
And if their Green; Did you remember to press a button you silly sprout?
Serious question, how and where in the settings to you make it so your Tanks have blue health bars, Healers have green and DPS have red?
Character Configuration menu - Display Name Settings - General tab
Thank you muchly!!@@Waveofyourheart
Got me at abc 😂
Tank swaps scare me tbh. like, how do u know when to do it? i just dont get it
It's usually one tank getting a debuff that increases the damage he takes, other than that you just learn it fight to fight and they only appear in extremes, savages or ultimates
@LuminNox okay cool. Im planning on probably doing just casual stuff w tank so thats good. Thanks for the help!
All the tanks are pretty dang easy, DRK is only "hard" for me cause my ping ain't great and all them double weaves ALWAYS clip.
1 2 3, 1 minute, 2 minutes, got it
So how do people know how many packs of mobs to pull for a "big pull"? I hear wall to wall all the time, but ive died far too many times to believe that lol
As a new tank. I pull what I'm comfortable with...usually 2-3 packs. Unless theres an end game healer. Or sometimes I will ask the healer how many packs they are comfortable healing through. Just by doing these couple things, my tank journey has been very enjoyable. Hope this helps!
@15:00 I no joke answered damage... I'm a healer main
You have good taste, funny adventurer. I hit buttons.
Leveling roulette DRKs are the worst.
As a sage main, my favorite DRKs are the chain pullers on Stone Vigil who don't mit. How dare you force me to cast a normal Diagnosis past level 30!
Drk only loses dark mind as a self mit when ot, so no big mit loss. Gnb are just drama queens.
DRK has the highest potential mitigation out of all the tanks, if their taking 1 hit and not multiple
The most important thing in FF14 is catgirls not damage, smh
you dingus
watching this made me feel bad for you
Funny you say that because for some reason I feel the same
You don't even have to pop that tank stance and my cat boi dragoon is still gonna want a piece of that cake.
tank guid
A B C = Always Be beatin the piss out of the loot piñata
Damn i just got PTSD from TOP with that zoom out mod lmao
Sorry if I'm being way to judgmental ahhh i who cares what i think sorry about this
Dude. He isn’t talking that fast. And even if he is, making up stuff saying he’s talking fast because “you should know this already” is such a lie.
Did you just pronounce voilà as viola?
Warriors have only strengths. Yes, but by the time I finished farming armored bear mount I got objectively worse at tanking and needed to relearn actual tank mechanics for GNB farm. WAR is so boring to me I almost lost any will to actually finish the grind.
@11:08 - no one who makes these guides needs to say this, it's just emotional insecurity being projected. If you're confident in your teaching ability with this guide, people will naturally wall-to-wall, as they'll have no excuse. If they don't naturally wall-to-wall, their valid excuse is that your tank guide is beyond sub-optimal at achieving its purpose: it's simply not performing the bare minimum effort necessary to succeed
Nothing to get Guidexiety about tho!
Quit yapping
Brrrrrr sprint make catgirl go fast
Use sprint more, don't read above essay.
Magus doesn't know Jack
@@AlexBetancourt yeah don't know any Jack
This is false, please use Sprint
but MT PLD cannot use passage flexibly, not impossible but.....
Bosses raid wides are cast bars, I don't understand this arguement I'm sorry
Can't tell if you took that joke seriously or you're also joking yourself
@@AzuriteTV jokes... disrespect... as interchangeable as the ears it lands upon
why does EVERY guy play a female and spend millions on dresses. smh

lol. FFXIV tank guide - turn on stance, press a single button
Drk is so horribly bad at sustain😂 I use all tanks but I prefer gnb and war and paladin I just never play drk even tho its max level because its sustain is just cheeks😂
Living dead heals you to full ;)
