I hope to go back and fish it again, but I don’t know what lies in my future. But yes, there isn’t much better than Colorado for fishing and anything outdoors really.
I appreciate you showing the small ones you got as well. Thats a good way to tell the difference between, as me and my best friend say, an "angler and a fisherman." Youre an angler my friend. Much respect
Thank you for the comment. Sometimes the small ones are the most rewarding depending on how it is caught. I have caught some large trout that weren’t too difficult to bring in or even hook, but have had some small ones I spend 30 minutes trying to cast to and finally get the take. To me, the small one that was harder to catch was more rewarding. Hope that makes sense.
Oh yeah it is beautiful! Those little lakes are pretty cool aren’t they? I love heading out to Dolores, if the river isn’t doing as good as expected, then there is the little lakes! Colorado is a special place for sure
Don't know if this will clear anything up or just muddy the water a little more. The Bull Trout you caught is a member of a family of fish called Charrs. That includes the Brook Trout, Lake Trout, Arctic Char, and of course the Bull Trout. That may explain the resemblance between the Brookie and the Bull. Hope this helps. Of course there are probably other viewers out there who may be better versed than I, and who can correct me and help clear up any confusion.
No your right it’s not a bull..... I had thought it was just a light colored Brooke (which it was) but I had a bunch of people correct me on the first video and said it was a bull trout. I believed them and just went with it. Found out after this video They were wrong.
Floated the Black Canyon years ago with my father. A week of great memories, good camaraderie with 2 great guides. The number one place to fish in Colorado will die with me. No way I would tell anyone.
@@Ryan-zc1tz ahh, always room for a cynical comment. Although the spot I call my favorite is know by a few others (maybe locals only), I can assure you it is incredibly inaccessible & far too much work for 99% of flyfishermen. 60 years of fishing Colorado has me convinced we exceeded the number of people for healthy pressure on lakes & streams.

Colorado Native living along the banks of the Brazos River here in Texas. Looking to make a move back to Colorado at some point but there is some good fly fishing here too ( kinda). Stripper sit under the dams on the tail water side and go crazy when there are water releases from the reservoirs.
I've also fished the Durango area along with that pool on Cascade Creek, but you really missed alot of the gems. East and West Taylor is great outside of Gunnison. The Arkansas River stretch between Leadville and Salida, the Colorado, Flaming Gorge, etc. and the epic fishing on the Front Range. North and South Platte and Poudre River or even the Big Thompsen all trump the southwest venues IMO. Nice video tho.
Glad you liked the video. No question there are some great spots not just in and around that area. However it was a list of my best spots. Considering it was 5-8 hour drive for some of the really great spots you suggested, I didn’t get to hit them too often. So I just was going on what trips were top trips for me. More like a Colorado highlight reel for my channel. Hope that helps.
Enjoyed this Colorado top 10. I recognized the spot on Electra Lake. Fished that location in 2016 with much the same results. Passed by Molas Lake several times on the way to somewhere else, but it'll be a stop on my next trip up 550

Love the video man!! Was curious what river that was in the number one clip?! I’ve been trying to get out and explore more spots in Colorado cause I’ve kind of stuck to the south platte and some of the rivers in the steamboat area. I added 3 spots to my list from your video that I want to go try out! Was just wondering what the last spot is since I’m not great at lake fishing but want to give those a try!
Thank you, I’m so glad you enjoyed the video. As for the spot, I’m sorry man, it’s a spot I promised my friend not to say where. Just can’t go telling the whole internet or it would be blown up.
Cool, I've been following along for a while and actually noticed you posting near me. Im in San Antonio not far from Guadalupe State Park. I didn't really realize you had fully made the move. Glad you like the videos. As for sharing locations, absolutely not. I did this once and lost half my viewers. They will tell you the more popular spots until they see you often and know you can be trustworthy on who you share the secret spots with.
Not sure what part of Texas you've moved to, but if you're in the northern part, you might check out the Lower Mountain Fork just north of Broken Bow, OK in Beavers Bend State Park.
Thanks, if your talking about the big trout at the end, then I just need you to understand it was released within a few seconds of me landing it. Don’t need anyone thinking I’m off killing fish here. Haha!
Great videos! I can't tell, but do you wet your hands before handling the fish? Can you explain to your viewers/anglers why it's important to wet your hands.
So I haven’t said the spots my friend. Sorry to inform you that. I know you want to be mad and blame others for your lack of catching, however it might just be your technique and skills that you should work on. ;). Haha!
So I’ve never fished Kansas, but I would say a 5wt is fine. If you can find a place willing to do casting lessons it will help elevate some frustration, but over time you can learn to cast without the lessons. For a beginner rod, you don’t want to do one of those cheap big box store “kits”. You will want to replace just about every item in that kit over time. I personally would spend more money on the rod than the reel. And for flies, I’d get done at the local fly shop where they can tell you what is working in the area. If you want some affordable flies, and a really good fly rod setup, go to www.risenfly.com and use my discount there. My discount is McFly and it will get you a discount of anything in your shopping cart at checkout. You can buy some flies, like, tippet, rod/reel. The ITB rod is a great starter rod, and paired with their Armor reel, you have an amazing setup for about $200. That’s where I would start. If you go much cheaper you will want to replace the items quickly. But if that’s too much money, I’d just get a cheap reel, and stick with a higher end rod. The reel is basically just a line holder with trout and what not. I rarely use the drag. So spend your money on a good rod and good line. If you have to save money somewhere, go with a less expensive reel.
@@McFlyAngler Thanks! Don't really have any local fly shops around me only one that I know of is Cabellas (which isn't a local shop) and that's a 3 hour drive away, but I like to study the water and see what the fish are eating. Right now bluegill are eating dragonflys. I have fished very heavily for about a year and can use a baitcaster. Also I'm 15 so I'm in that stage in life where I like to learn by myself so I will probably teach myself with the help of videos. I will have to go with the cheap option if I want to start now, but might be able to work up to a better set-up. Thanks for the reel tip that will help. Thank you for your time and knowledge. Sincerely, Mavrik.
Well good luck man! As for flies, check out that shop, you can get in expensive flies from risen, at only 90c each (cheaper with my discount). I’d look for some dragonfly nymphs then if they are hitting that. Really any large nymph for the bluegill. The trout might be more picky.
There are 3.... I don’t give away spots though on social media. Just anyone can read this. Find me on Instagram. Also you could call duranglers they would know which one
@@McFlyAngler without giving it away I fished one like that somewhere around Creede. It was amazing, pool after pool loaded with native cuts. Prolly caught 25-30 in a few hours all on dries. It was more open than the one you showed, but I wonder if you know the one I'm talking about?
So I cannot disclose any small Greeks like that sorry. Some of these spots we’re told to me from friends or fly shops as their secret spots, and asked not to disclose them online. Sorry man! But thanks! Yeah it was fun! Just start researching around the area, you will find it at one point.
@@McFlyAngler what is ypur fav spot out here to fish? Colorado is incredibly nice I am a roofer so I get a lot of time to be out in the wilderness fishing and hiking.
I’m from the 4 corners area originally, so I rarely made it up that direction. The mountain passes weren’t too easy to make most of the year. But I really thought 11 mile was beautiful! One of the prettiest rivers I’ve ever fished. I cannot say I did great fishing it ever, but usually it’s because I was so tired from the drives that when I finally got there I just couldn’t fish up to the level I needed. Kinda brain dead. Watch my 11 mile videos. It’s very pretty.
The armor reel is not a sealed drag reel. The LW is though. The LW is $145, and much less after the discount I give all my subs. I’d check that one out if your going to dunk it in salt water. Or their new reel the whale, which is specifically made for saltwater applications. The armor is an economical reel, that doesn’t quite have all the same bells and whistles as their higher end offerings. But it’s a good reel, just not fully sealed.
Would you be willing too help me with some fly patterns I have fly fished for quite awhile now but I just don’t seem too catch the numbers you do fishing the same waters you did I mainly fish the Dolores too telluride area
Both are great fishing places. My favorite fly for there when dry fly fishing was a stimulator. But for nymphing it depends on the river. Simple midge patterns like zebras always work everywhere. I really like the GT caddis also, great nymphing pattern. Id be happy to sell you some flies if you want.
@@McFlyAngler i just drove to Colorado from iowa lol. Im gonna be living here for a few months. That's actually what drew me to this video. Fly fishing is a whole different game lol.
Is the key to fly fish? I’ll have to learn that 😂 what are some good spots? I currently document my fishing/ camping trips and have no luck and want to give my viewer some better content
I don’t know where to live so hard to recommend spots. Best way is to ask a local fly shop since they know the areas like the back of their hand. Unless I’ve fished your local waters I probably wouldn’t have any clue. Haha
I live in Colorado I’ve tried a few creeks up near Breckinridge and I caught a few small rainbow trout on a reel set up. I definitely heard there’s really good fly fishing here in Colorado.
Yeah so I only really fished in and around Durango area. I did fish a little up into some other parts of the state but not enough for me to be good at recommending spots or techniques. The local fly shops really are your best resource.
No I know! So sad about that. Just didn’t ever get the chance. It’s hard to be gone that long with a family and all. That’s a 7 hour drive so it’s not just a one day trip
@@McFlyAngler I understand. It's rare I can even carve out for a day trip. Got a new sling pack; I was looking at the Summit for a long time but I never bit 'cause it had no hands-free option for the rod, but I found a better option for about $40 less expensive with net and rod holding options for back and chest positions! Makes it so convenient to work with the line completely hands free. My other account is still blocked though. :(
You have great videos, Shawn. The guitar intro is mellow and is separate from the actual video. Your voice overs explaining the hows and whys of your fly tying or outdoor adventure are good and helpful.
I don't give away my spots. I forget honestly and I don't really want to go back to watch the video again anyway. All of these are past videos of mine, so maybe if you watch through you can figure out the spots?
Ok lat comment how can u get dehydrated if your fishing I drink mountain spring water all the time i have only heard of story's of people getting sick and its from pond water
I wouldn’t drink the water bro. Even the moving water. There are a few dangerous bacteria that can grow in the rivers. Most people aren’t conditioned to be able to handle that, and will get very sick.
Yeah I thought that also at first but like 15 people in that video all said it was a bull trout... I’m not the best with Piscatology... I don’t know all my fish species. Haha!
That’s called blowing up a spot, I will not tell spots locations. Tried that once, and I had just about every fly shop, guide and local who knew the spots I mentioned get very very upset. Had a few threats and every time any of them saw me on the water I was being cussed out. Even had one guy throwing rocks at me.
Why would anyone move from Colorado for Texas? I live here in Texas, I spend all my time here working so that I can travel to Colorado. The scenery, the mountains, the trees, the Skiing, Fishing, climbing, MMA, etc etc etc. I'm utterly dumbfounded and couldn't focus on the video
why do people gatekeep fishing spots? like its not that serious, its just like some weird ego trip. If I stumble across a good spot im telling every one i know who likes to fish. Why wouldnt i want people to go out and have fun? its just corny idk, maybe im wrong but its just so nerdy to me
If I tell the internet, everyone would go there and out fish the spot. Many fly fisherman catch and release, but not everyone does this. Soon all the fish would be gone and that spot would no longer be a good spot. Now I have told my spots before, but when someone tells me a spot and asks me not to say where it is on the internet, I respect them.
Thanks yeah, like 15 people on the first video told me it’s a bull. But..... on this video they said no. Haha! Just going off what others were telling me.
I've already seen a few other people comment this, but you need to keep fish in the water for as long as possible, especially after a long fight. Just in the first few clips it's obvious how long you're keeping them out for your shots, and it's very harsh on an already exhausted fish. This is very poor fish handling and with a video getting 50k views, you should make sure your ill-informed viewers know that this is improper and unethical instead of trying to defend yourself in the comments against those who know better. I'm sure we've all made these mistakes at some point, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be corrected. We have no bull trout in Colorado. Might have been a lake or brook. Hope Texas is treating you well. ✌
It’s so frustrating watching these and not getting the names of the streams. People, please start sharing these locations, we all love fishing and nature, we are only on this earth short time, share this stuff. I’m watching this from Maryland, at best I would get to fish these places one time in my life. Those of us that watch these vids are not the type to destroy places
I can’t give away names of streams on the internet man. Part of the fun is finding places yourself right? I did give away some spots before and then they instantly had people come and destroy the spots. Almost got me killed even, had death threats from other fisherman because people that came and killed fish at the spots. Sorry bro, not giving away spots

Hey there this creek/stream between Durango and silverton with a buch of brooks trout in it do you know the name of it?
There are 3.... I don’t give away spots though on social media. Just anyone can read this. Find me on Instagram. Also you could call duranglers they would know which one
@@McFlyAngler without giving it away I fished one like that somewhere around Creede. It was amazing, pool after pool loaded with native cuts. Prolly caught 25-30 in a few hours all on dries. It was more open than the one you showed, but I wonder if you know the one I'm talking about?
How’s Texas fishing? Any hot spots?
It’s decent, I enjoy the gulf fishing for redfish the most probably, but bass fishing is ok also
What area was the last clip in? Been fishing some really good streams/rivers however I’ve never seen any trout that big
So I cannot disclose any small Greeks like that sorry. Some of these spots we’re told to me from friends or fly shops as their secret spots, and asked not to disclose them online. Sorry man! But thanks! Yeah it was fun! Just start researching around the area, you will find it at one point.
No worries totally understand!
Small creeks I meant to say. Hahahaha! Siri thinking I’m racist.... lol
I will tell you though it’s in la plata county if that helps?
What city atleast you told us the city/part of the state or what river was it
Any good spots for a fellow catch and release fisher near denver? Georgetown sucks now and i cant drive 5hrs to fish
I have not fished my Denver. I have fished near Colorado Springs at 11 mile and dream stream but can’t say I’ve done well anywhere around there.
@@McFlyAngler i may need to just plan a camping trip next yr
Nice yeah! I wish I could make it back out there. I Miss Colorado a lot!
Hello I have a question is the genius fly combo from risen fly sealed drag and saltwater suitable? The reel is armor 5/6
@@McFlyAngler what's the discount
15%
Dude was about to cry 😂
I do miss Colorado and my friends there. Never easy to move, but I move to where God sends me, and for some reason that was Texas.
Where was that last clip located at
Can’t say sorry, a friend showed me the spot and asked me not to say where it was.
@@McFlyAngler I’m definitely interested in some flies I’ll buy a whole box from you if you’d do something like that
Yeah I do sell flies. Contact me on Instagram is the best way. Or you can find my email on my UA-cam about page
Try Iowa bass fishing. Its a whole lot of fun lol
Boy I’m sure it is! I’m also sure it’s a whole lotta driving to get there!? Haha
@@McFlyAngler i just drove to Colorado from iowa lol. Im gonna be living here for a few months. That's actually what drew me to this video. Fly fishing is a whole different game lol.
It is completely different for sure! Yeah I’ve got a family man, can’t leave that long. Barely get time for an afternoon to go fish now these days.
Where is spot #7??
Thanks bud.. nice of you to show all of your guided private pen raised private fishing to the rest of the world.
Most of these were wild trout...
#7 is ? The place with the bull trout.
Oh yeah I’m not giving away the spots. Lol! Not unless I want to get people hating me. Hahahaha
I’ll definitely check with the local fly shop thanks!
Yeah so I only really fished in and around Durango area. I did fish a little up into some other parts of the state but not enough for me to be good at recommending spots or techniques. The local fly shops really are your best resource.
How much of it was private access only
.
What do you mean? I only go in public places….
Never made it to Cheeseman... :( You would have loved it.
Oh what brand name? Send me a pic on email!
Great video. You can leave out the “music,” though.
I used to do music a lot and voice overs. It’s what got me all my views. I don’t do them right now because it’s a lot of work
Voice overs are good. Maybe because I am a “grouchy old man” the sounds of nature in videos like that are more appealing to me.
I feel ya. I don’t do them anymore though. All my old videos have them
You have great videos, Shawn. The guitar intro is mellow and is separate from the actual video. Your voice overs explaining the hows and whys of your fly tying or outdoor adventure are good and helpful.
Thanks, yeah I just don’t have the time to do that level of editing anymore... takes a while to do all that.
Where was spot #6
I don't give away my spots. I forget honestly and I don't really want to go back to watch the video again anyway. All of these are past videos of mine, so maybe if you watch through you can figure out the spots?
@@McFlyAngler thanks
Ok lat comment how can u get dehydrated if your fishing
I drink mountain spring water all the time i have only heard of story's of people getting sick and its from pond water
I wouldn’t drink the water bro. Even the moving water. There are a few dangerous bacteria that can grow in the rivers. Most people aren’t conditioned to be able to handle that, and will get very sick.
It's a bright coloured brookie. Not a bull trout.
Yeah I thought that also at first but like 15 people in that video all said it was a bull trout... I’m not the best with Piscatology... I don’t know all my fish species. Haha!
I am a local, why can't I know about #9
That’s called blowing up a spot, I will not tell spots locations. Tried that once, and I had just about every fly shop, guide and local who knew the spots I mentioned get very very upset. Had a few threats and every time any of them saw me on the water I was being cussed out. Even had one guy throwing rocks at me.
That's gotta be an oddly colored brookie or tiger trout. There are no bull trout in colorado
Ok
My other account is still blocked. :(
I’ll check on it next week
has anyone told you you look and sound like Chaps from Barstool sports? not an insult lol
Nope, can’t say I’ve heard that before. Never heard of barstool sports though or chaps... anyway, hope you enjoyed the video.
Work…. Colorado is expensive and doesn’t pay too well, texas is less expensive and pays better.
Oh yes that was a brook trout there are no bull trout in that stream i have been fishing that area for 25 years
Alrighty
this man: moved to texas from colorado.
me: trying to move to colorado from texas
Lol. I only moved to Texas because I had to. I mean Texas is great and all, but I love Colorado and miss it a lot!
That’s about 18
What is?
@@McFlyAngler the trout
Which one?
No bulltrout in colorado
Someone said it a while back, I believed them, but I agree no it’s not a bull.
Go for Gar.
In the summer I will
Please tie more small flys
Funny, I just tied up a parachute Adams today on video.
@@McFlyAngler cool when will the video be out
Probably Friday the 1st, but might be the week after...
@@McFlyAngler ok what is going to be your next video
Fishing...
In Colorado 1 or 2 fish every year is good on a fly.
What? Sorry I’m confused... 1-2 fish a year caught in Colorado is good? Dang! I’m lucky than, I caught around 1000+... haha
On bait yes. Fly?
I don’t bait fish except with my 5yo...
Why do you need to say where you are fishing.
What?
@@McFlyAngler You dont need to vividly describe exactly where you fish. How do you think locals feel about that?
I didn’t... lol
That was definitely a bull trout
Ya
😂😂😂
why do people gatekeep fishing spots? like its not that serious, its just like some weird ego trip.
Bull trout aren't in Colorado at all, it's a brookie
Alrighty…. Take care bro
@@McFlyAngler appreciate you responding, I get what your saying, unfortunately many people are ignorant and disrespectful. I’m not one of those people, when I fish I’m the guy who hauls out trash left by others and I release everything. You have a great channel, nice content, I f I had one I would prob say where I was fishing, that’s just me, then again maybe I wouldn’t I don’t know older I get the less I want to be around people anyway. Tell you what of you ever make it to Maryland hit me up I will turn you on to some spots, not the west but there is some nice fishing..
I hate hot spotters..Good way to wipe off the protective slim on the fish with your stupid gloves
stay in texas
Uhhh okay
Dave, be nice. How’s living in your parents basement working out?
Your rally rough with your release u should just eat them
Oh quit your crying
Wow bro, tell me how you really feel! Lol! Funny how much people have to look for stuff to complain about.
Where is spot #7??
