The Palace in this video was built in the XVIII century and became the home of Count Burnay, one of the richest persons in Portugal, who renovated it during the XIX century. Later it was bought by the State who installed there a school for the colonial services and then an university (where I had the joy to study). Teachers and students occupied the building until 2001, when the academic activities moved to a new and unimpressive block in another part of Lisbon. The Burnay Palace was a marvelous place to study, even better to party (all the students in town knew about the unforgetable nights, when the pink palace became a giant disco). Hope it recovers its shine, really a shame to see it becoming just another delirect...
Thank you for the comment. It is so sad that the state has left it like this, I suppose it would cost a lot of money to fix it up + modernize it however.
What a great experience you had being able to attend university there! Must have been a great place to be. Most of us studied in boring rectangular buildings with no style.
I also went to uni here in 1984-1988. Those were blessed times, it was an amazing place, and the garden was stunning. The older part of the palace upstairs did not belong to the university. But it was still kept and beautiful as far as I know. I recently heard that it had been bought by public authorities and that it would be restored to his former glory and converted into a library. Hope it's not just a rumour.
I studied there. It was a university in the 90’s. The party’s there where famous throughout the Lisbon university students, they took place every Thursday’s. I have great memories from that place, it breaks my heart seeing how it is right now 😞
Great video guys! I've been obsessed with abandoned places for years, and this palace is most majestic. It just breaks my heart to see this grand lady neglected and left to rot. I do so hope it is restored for future students to study it and learn what true architecture looks like.

This freaking Palace so gorgeous! The architecture on either side of the stairways is unreal!!! And The rest architecture is breath taking!!! The hand painted pictures throughout the ceilings and walls are so beautiful!!!
Beautiful! So much potential to be something functional for a family, an educational facility, an art museum....something - ANYTHING. I hope that it is rescued before it deteriorates beyond reasonable repairs.
For decades this was the headquarters of the ISCSP-ULisboa = School of Social and Political Sciences from Universiy of Lisbon. I did my course there and my marriage proposal was made at that terrace.
