Should your ring have 4 or 6 prongs? Is one better over the other? This is a common question I get asked by viewers all the time. Well, it really depends on your personal tastes. Here’s a quick rundown of the pros and cons of the four prong and six prong ring design.
Why Choose a 4 Prong Solitaire Ring?
Less metal coverage enables more light to enter the diamond.
Suitable for smaller size diamonds less than 1 carat in size.
Why Choose a 6 Prong Solitaire Ring?
More security for holding the center stone.
Create an emphasis on diamond shape with prong placements.
Here, I want to clarify that 4 prong rings are safe and also good for larger diamonds. That’s provided the setting is made well and the material for the ring casting has been processed properly.
In my opinion, I find 6 prongs to be overwhelming especially when it comes to smaller sized diamonds but if you are looking for something very close to the Tiffany design, the six prong setting would be the better choice.
Another common question I get asked is whether a 4 prong or 6 prong setting would make the diamond appear bigger. In my opinion, a 6 prong setting will give the illusion of a bigger diamond as the prongs become part of the outline when the ring is seen from a distance.

The 6 prong has a beautiful form. It's a Pitty tia Clarity gets smaller😭
This video really helped me out. You deserve more views
The 6 prong makes diamond look bigger to me
it looks nice but it doesnt let the diamond shine
I prefer 4 prong one which ever is best for the budget!
i took notes thank you :)
You fail to mention the metal is generally thinner in each prong with a 6 . My diamond fell out because of wear metal wire quicker. Metal is thicker with 4.
Thank you for mentioning this. Very important detail. Visually, I would have expected the 6 prong to be more secure. But thinner metal is a good thing to point out.
Which one was yours? 4 or 6 ?
That would be tragic 😢
That sucks. Sounds like bad craftsmanship altogether. My princess diamond fell out my 4 prong cathedral white gold setting and I found it about a year later in a drawer.
6 prong is less likely to fall out although you had a different experience
