In the 50's, when I was a kid, I saw Philly Joe at Birdland playing with Sonny Rollins Trio. Have forgetten who played base. Had never heard (will never hear) anything like it. Still wowed to this day.
Good history lesson ! I love all the old timers, but Philly Joe is my favorite. His drumming with Miles was exciting, the feel and phrasing. I have his solo work on CD as well. If i had to pick one favorite drummer out of all genres,it would be Philly !
Thank you! This is great content, learning about the history really helps me connect more with the instrument. The First Great quintet had John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, and Miles Davis!
Awesome video. This channel is dope!! This dude is the real deal. Wish I had this when I first started learning jazz drums, kids these days don't know how lucky they are. I was up in the middle of the night making vhs recordings of jazz gigs from obscure satellite channels back when I started!
So glad to have you back - your videos are hugely inspirational and incredibly well-made and your playing is something I'm sure we all strive for. Thanks!
Wow.... I came upon this channel recently... what a gem! Your content is incredible! I love the practical applications and also the educational backgrounds you provide! Keep up the amazing work!
first quintent miles davis john coltrane, red garland ,paul chambers Philly jo. Last album miles stones last full album. Also appears on blues no. 2 from some day my prince session in 1961. i believe!
Nice - you actually got the Philly Joe sound and vibe. I like to practice that Two Bass Hit transcription with all single strokes as well as with all the rudimental sticking - sounds more like Buddy with the singles...
Great Work Quincy and by the way great humor too, thanks for your Qtips including the nice PDF's transcriptions ! Hope to meet you one day ! Warm regards from France, Ton Ton Salut
Welcome back! Glad for more great lessons. Philly played a track on "someday my Prince will come" could be wrong, 1958 was milestones and an album called porgy and bess which I've not listened too.
And the 2nd prize goes to, Mr. D'Arcy Stibbard! He plays on the track Blues No. 2, and he's taking NO prisoners!! Send me an email and I'll get a CD right out to you. Thanks for check the video out and congrats!
