What surprises me the most is how casual the training for firefighters is depicted in this movie. Normally a new recruit will not be allowed to join a call, if he 1) doesn’t know how to fit his PPE (Personal Protective Equipment); 2) has not had a minimum training and instruction time and probably has passed an exam to prove it; In addition: 3) kids will not be allowed to join a call, that is far to dangerous, it just doesn’t happen under any circumstance; 4) there are over 800,000 call outs per year in Chicago for their 5 divisions and 25 battalions and 96 engines and over 5,500 people working for the department. But fire related call outs may be 1/4 and not all will be as terrifying and devastating as shown the many in the movie Backdraft. I am saying this without the intention to diminish the great service these men and women are performing every day as the number of call outs is impressive in itself already and deserves our respect.🫡
